Burn! [Quemada] (Photograph archive containing original negatives, contact sheets, and color slides and transparencies from the 1969 film)

Colombia: Emidela / United Artists, 1969. Collection of vintage black-and-white negatives, contact sheets, and mounted slides and transparencies from the 1969 Italian-French film, "Burn!," here under the original Spanish title "Quemada." From the collection of Sam Gilman, with his name on several of the film processing envelopes in holograph ink. Gilman did not work in this film, but worked with Brando on earlier films like "One-Eyed Jacks" (1961) and "The Young Lions " (1958), as well as later on "The Missouri Breaks" (1976). Over 130 images representing on-the-set production, featuring Marlon Brando on a lunch break, director Pontecorvo riding a mule, and members of the cast and crew, as well as images of locals likely used as extras. Formats include 35mm color slides, 35mm negative filmstrips, medium-format negatives and mounted color transparencies, and three 8 x 10 single weight contact sheets. Based loosely on the life of Sir William Walker (1824-1860). Walker (Brando) is a professional mercenary who ignites a slave revolt on an island in the Caribbean, where the British sugar trade is in turmoil. After a successful mission, Walker returns to Britain, where he remains for ten years. The same slave revolt he helped initiate is now at war with the replacement regime, and he is sent back to quell the revolt. Seen as a traitor to the natives, Walker is subsequently assassinated, riddled with guilt upon his death. Shot on location in Colombia, Morocco, Italy, and France. All items Near Fine overall, with slides, transparencies, and negatives still in the original film processing envelopes and boxes from the Emidela processing company in Barranquilla, Colombia. Complete collation details available on request.

Agatha Christie Crime Collection. COMPLETE SET IN UNCLIPPED DUSTWRAPPERS

Hamlyn [1969 - 1972] 24 vols., 8vo., First Edition; decorative black cloth, upper boards and backstrips blocked and lettered in gilt and red, red tops, red endpapers, a very good, bright, clean set in unclipped dustwrapper, some wrappers moderately sunned at backstrips as often. A bright, clean set of the definitive collected edition, including the author's short stories, issued on a subscription basis by the publisher and not available through bookshops. Each volume contains three stories or story collections. It would seem that many subscribers may have lacked commitment during the four years of publication for complete sets are far less common than one might imagine. The attractive bindings incorporate a golden dagger. The dustwrappers feature an attractive design format with every volume carrying a striking illustration symbolising one of the stories therein (without plot spoilers!) but were less successful in production terms for the backstrips in particular are notoriously prone to fading. In the present set, the author's name (originally in red) is faded virtually to illegibility on some wrappers through over - exposure to sunlight. Fortunately the story titles printed in black are not susceptible in this way. The set comprises The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, They do it with Mirrors, Mrs. McGinty's Dead (1969); Cards on the Table, N or M?, A Murder is Announced (1969); Appointment with Death, Crooked House, Sad Cypress (1969); 4.50 from Paddington, Lord Edgware Dies, Murder in Mesopotamia (1969); Murder on the Orient Express, Death in the Clouds, Why didn't they ask Evans? (1969); The Murder on the Links, A Pocket Full of Rye, Destination Unknown (1969); The Hollow, The Moving Finger, Three Act Tragedy (1969); Mystery of the Blue Train, The Listerdale Mystery (short stories), Murder at the Vicarage (1970); Murder is Easy, Dead Man's Folly, The Man in the Brown Suit (1970); The Mirror Crack'd from Side to Side, They came to Baghdad, The ABC Murders (1970); Ordeal by Innocence, One Two Buckle my Shoe, Adventure of the Christmas Pudding (1970); Cat among the Pigeons, The Labours of Hercules, Hickory Dickory Dock (1970); The Mysterious Affair at Styles, Ten Little Niggers, Dumb Witness (1970); The Pale Horse, The Big Four, The Secret Adversary (1970); Peril at End House, The Body in the Library, Hercule Poirot's Christmas (1970); Death on the Nile, Towards Zero, After the Funeral (1970); Sparkling Cyanide, The Secret of Chimneys, Five Little Pigs (1970); Evil Under the Sun, Death Comes as the End, The Sittaford Mystery (1970); A Caribbean Mystery, Taken at the Flood, The Seven Dials Mystery (1971); By the Pricking of my Thumbs, The Mysterious Mr. Quin, Endless Night (1971); Hallowe'en Party, Passenger to Frankfurt, The Thirteen Problems (1971); The Clocks, Third Girl, Murder in the Mews (1971); Partners in Crime, At Bertram's Hotel, The Hound of Death (1972); Nemesis, Parker Pyne Investigates, Poirot Investigates (1972).         Very Happy Alexander (Original Saul Bass lithograph poster for the 1968 film)

N.p.: Cinema V., 1969. Original silkscreen poster designed by legendary title and poster artist Saul Bass for the US release of the 1968 French film "Alexandre le bienheaureux." Printed at the Art Krebs Screen Studios in Los Angeles, and used for the film's premiere at the legendary Cinema II Theater in New York City. Bass' initial design proposals were, in general, too radical for film studios to consider for advertisement, and were invariably altered to suit commercial needs. He produced silkscreens of his original designs himself in non-numbered editions of 50 to 200. These posters were then given to fellow artists, friends, museums, and design magazines, and never offered directly for sale by Bass. 25 x 33 inches. About Fine.

Patience Abbe collection of Three signed association copies of first editions books, ASL and B&W photo

1969. . • Three signed association copies of first editions in slightly chipped jackets of Patience, Richard, and John Abbe's three books: - Around the World in Eleven Years (New York: Frederick A. Stokes, 1936), signed inscription, 3 February 1969, by Patience Abbe to François Leydet, her second husband and the author of the Sierra Club Books; - Of All Places (New York: Frederick A. Stokes, 1937), signed by all three children for Cecil B. De Mille, with his bookplate; - No Place Like Home (New York: Julian Messner, 1940), signed by all three children for Cecil B. De Mille, with his bookplate. • ALS to Henry Roe (Librarian at St. Thomas Public Library, Ont.), written in pencil, 19 June 1936, with envelope, thanking him for his comments about Around the World in Eleven Years. "I would like to come up to Canada in the Winter time to see the dogs pulling the sleighs…. I would like to see the Canadein Mountend so maby papa will drive us down there. If we come I will come and see you." With a b&w photo of Richard, John and Patience Abbe. Books and documents housed in a blue cloth pictorial clamshell box. Patience Abbe (1924-2012) was only 11 when the memoir she wrote with her two brothers, "Around the World in Eleven Years," climbed onto the bestseller lists for grown-ups in 1936. As the siblings recounted their nomadic childhood in Europe and subsequent move to America, their exuberant behavior and unaffected observations charmed readers. Patience observed that a woman with children could always get a seat on a Paris bus "no matter how first the others were." Her career as an author peaked at age 15 after the young globe-trotters published two more books. They recounted their adventures living in Hollywood in "Of All Places!" and documented a trip to prewar Europe and life on their Colorado ranch in "No Place Like Home." Patience's first husband was Brendan O'Mahoney, with whom she had two daughters, Catherine and Shelley, before the marriage ended in divorce in 1954. She later married Francois Leydet, author, whose books included the Sierra Club books "The Last Redwoods" and, with David Brower, "Time and the River Flowing." Patience helped to edit those Sierra Club Books. Abbe died March 17 of natural causes in Redding, her family announced. She was 87. She was born July 22, 1924, in Paris to American expatriates, noted photographer James Abbe and his wife, Polly, a former Ziegfeld girl. This collection is on consignment with LDRB.
