Alan Arkin, Art Garfunkel, and Martin Sheen on the set of "Catch-22" (1969)

N.p., N.p. 1969 - Vintage oversize double weight candid photograph of Alan Arkin, Art Garfunkel, and Martin Sheen on the set of Mike Nichols' "Catch-22" in 1969. Shot, struck, and mounted by the film's still photographer, Bob Willoughby. The photographer has written at the top of the verso, in holograph pencil: "Candid during rehearsal / The boys break up in briefing room scene / Art Garfunkel, Alan Arkin, Martin Sheen. Also with Willoughby's ASMP rubber stamp for both New York and Ireland addresses. Full provenance available. After studying with Saul Bass at the Kann Institute of Art in Los Angeles, Willoughby began working as a photographer for magazines such as "Life," "Look," and "Harper's Bazaar" in the late 1940s. It was while on assignment covering Judy Garland in a "A Star is Born" that Willoughby's ability to capture his subjects' spontaneity, humor, and vulnerability, resulting in images that were far different from more traditional film stills, came to Hollywood's attention and earned him his first "Life" magazine cover. Willoughby spent the next 20-plus years working as a set photographer for every major studio, documenting some of most important films of the era and creating intimate portraits of some of Hollywood's greatest celebrities. Technically and stylistically innovative, Willoughby built the first remote radio-controlled cameras used on film sets, pioneered the use of the "silent blimp" for 35mm cameras, and created brackets to mount his cameras directly over the movie cameras to capture the same images.Willoughby moved his family to County Cork, Ireland in 1972, working on only a handful of films through the late 1970s and early 1980s, though he would continue to photograph, exhibit, and publish books for the remainder of his life. The stills in this collection were given by Willoughby to friends in Kilbrittain, Ireland just prior to his move to Vence, France in 1989, where he would remain until his death in 2009.Perhaps more than any other photographer, Willoughby is responsible for creating the the look of mid-century celebrity and moviemaking in the popular imagination, with his images printed in magazines literally every week of his career. But beyond being prolific, Willoughby's legacy rests with his ability capture the essence of the actors he photographed, as well as the films with which those photographs were associated. As Sydney Pollack said in his introduction to Willoughby's autobiography, "Sometimes a filmmaker gets a look at a photograph taken on his own set and sees the 'soul' of his film in one still photograph. It's rare, but it happens. It happened to me in 1969, the first time I looked at the work of Bob Willoughby during the filming of "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?"Willoughby's photographs are in the permanent collections of ten museums, including The National Portrait Galleries in Washington, DC and London, the Bibliotheque Nationale de France, The Museum of Modern Art, and The Tate Modern. In a custom museum-quality frame, archivally mounted, with UV glass. 13.5 x 10 inches. Antonioni's great American experiment, and the only film the director ever made in the United States, written for the screen by a young Sam Shepard. Though made from an Italian's perspective, the film stands today as a great visual statement on the American West in the late 1960s, rampant consumerism, and the hippie zeitgeist. Photo: 8 x 10 inches (20 x 25 cm). Two short closed tears to one edge, else Fine. Contact sheet: 8 x 13 inches. Fine.

Wrappers a bit sunned and rumpled at extended overlap edges, otherwise very good or better. However, further revisions were to come as production neared and proceeded, including the jettisoning of the oddly out of place subtitle.         Patience Abbe collection of Three signed association copies of first editions books, ASL and B&W photo

1969. . • Three signed association copies of first editions in slightly chipped jackets of Patience, Richard, and John Abbe's three books: - Around the World in Eleven Years (New York: Frederick A. Stokes, 1936), signed inscription, 3 February 1969, by Patience Abbe to François Leydet, her second husband and the author of the Sierra Club Books; - Of All Places (New York: Frederick A. Stokes, 1937), signed by all three children for Cecil B. De Mille, with his bookplate; - No Place Like Home (New York: Julian Messner, 1940), signed by all three children for Cecil B. De Mille, with his bookplate. • ALS to Henry Roe (Librarian at St. Thomas Public Library, Ont.), written in pencil, 19 June 1936, with envelope, thanking him for his comments about Around the World in Eleven Years. "I would like to come up to Canada in the Winter time to see the dogs pulling the sleighs…. I would like to see the Canadein Mountend so maby papa will drive us down there. If we come I will come and see you." With a b&w photo of Richard, John and Patience Abbe. Books and documents housed in a blue cloth pictorial clamshell box. Patience Abbe (1924-2012) was only 11 when the memoir she wrote with her two brothers, "Around the World in Eleven Years," climbed onto the bestseller lists for grown-ups in 1936. As the siblings recounted their nomadic childhood in Europe and subsequent move to America, their exuberant behavior and unaffected observations charmed readers. Patience observed that a woman with children could always get a seat on a Paris bus "no matter how first the others were." Her career as an author peaked at age 15 after the young globe-trotters published two more books. They recounted their adventures living in Hollywood in "Of All Places!" and documented a trip to prewar Europe and life on their Colorado ranch in "No Place Like Home." Patience's first husband was Brendan O'Mahoney, with whom she had two daughters, Catherine and Shelley, before the marriage ended in divorce in 1954. She later married Francois Leydet, author, whose books included the Sierra Club books "The Last Redwoods" and, with David Brower, "Time and the River Flowing." Patience helped to edit those Sierra Club Books. Abbe died March 17 of natural causes in Redding, her family announced. She was 87. She was born July 22, 1924, in Paris to American expatriates, noted photographer James Abbe and his wife, Polly, a former Ziegfeld girl. This collection is on consignment with LDRB.

Ottimo (Fine). Prima edizione (First edition).

        Joan of Arc

New York: Dodd, Mead & Company, 1969. First edition. Hardcover. Lauren Ford. This interesting little book is excerpted from Churchill's A History of the English-Speaking Peoples. On 29 December 1938, Churchill wrote to his wife regarding his initial draft about this part of his history: "I have just finished writing about Joan of Arc. I think she is the winner in the whole of French history. The leading women of these days were more forceful and remarkable than the men." Profusely illustrated, this slim volume contains 17 illustrations by the distinguished artist Lauren Ford. Though 16 of these illustrations had previously been published as black and white drawings, this is their first appearance in color. The illustration on the dust jacket front cover and frontispiece is original to this edition. This little-known edition is scarce and thus missing from many collections. Many of the copies that do come on the market are ex-library with attendant flaws, very often including library stickers or writing on the spine. This copy is not ex-library, a truly fine example in a very good dust jacket. The white cloth binding remains immaculate and square, with sharp corners and bright gilt. The contents are likewise pristine, with no spotting or previous ownership marks. The dust jacket remains bright and unclipped, retaining the original $3.50 front flap price. We note only light soiling to the rear panel and a little wear at the spine ends and corners. The dust jacket is protected with a removable, archival quality clear cover. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A279, Woods/ICS A138(j), Langworth p.334.

        Arte povera

Mazzotta, 1969. Brossura (wrappers) Completamente illustrato in bianco e nero con foto di opere e installazioni di Walter De Maria, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Stephan Kaltenbach, Richard Long, Mario Merz, Douglas Huebler, Joseph Beuys, Eva Hesse, Michael Heizer, Ger Van Elk, Jannis Kounellis, Lawrence Weiner, Luciano Fabro, Bruce Nauman, Joseph Kosuth, Jan Dibbets, Giovanni Anselmo, Robert Barry, Pier Paolo Calzolari, Dennis Oppenheim, Barry Flanagan, Robert Smithson, Giulio Paolini, Reiner Ruthenbeck, Alighiero Boetti, Keith Sonnier, Giuseppe Penone, Franz Erhard Walther, Hans Haacke, Gilberto Zorio, Robert Morris, Marinus Boezem, Karl Andre, Emilio Prini, Richard Serra, Germano Celant. 8vo. pp. 240. Ottimo (Fine). Prima edizione (First edition).

        Robert Rauschenberg

New York: Abrams, 1969. Near fine in photo-illustrated boards with the original acetate jacket lightly chipped at the spine ends and creased on the inner front flap. The thin pamphlet laid in shows occasional pencil marks, else near fine. Housed in a custom clamshell box.. First Edition. Quarto. Landmark monograph with text by Andrew Forge and book design by Robert Rauschenberg. The use of dryly descriptive text superimposed directly over the image predates a similar design deployed a few years later by Robert Venturi's "Learning from Las Vegas." Significantly, Rauschenberg's overall design concept bridges the art monograph with the artists' book. The publisher's apprehension is apparent in the pamphlet insert reproducing Andrew Forge's text with apology for producing a book "intermittently difficult to read." Uncommon with all components intact, scarce thus.
