The Journals of Captain James Cook on his Voyages of Discovery Edited from the Original Manuscripts by J.C. Beaglehole

Beaglehole's classic edition of Cook's original manuscript journals, originally published by the Hakluyt Society, has for too long been out of print. The text of the journals provides the reliable and authoritative narrative of Cook's three voyages, and its republication has been as warmly welcomed as was the original edition when it appeared in 1968. Journals of Captain James Cook. Four volumes, large octavo (234 x 156 mm.), and portfolio (377 x 248 mm.), over 4000 pages, maps and illustrations; 68 charts and views in a separate portfolio; bound in cloth. The substantial volumes contain Cook's own day-by-day descriptions of his three great voyages of discovery; introductions and detailed notes accompany the texts, providing necessary identifications and references, and giving additional information from other sources supplementing Cook's account. More extended extracts from the journals of Cook's shipmates are printed as appendices. A separate portfolio contains the manuscript charts and views drawn by Cook and his officers, which he regarded as an essential complement to his Journals. This is an essential source for the historian or voyage-enthusiast: Beaglehole's monumental work of scholarship stands as one of the greatest achievements in voyage history.

        The Double Helix

New York: Atheneum,, 1968. A Personal Account of the Discovery of the Structure of DNA. Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to spine gilt, red endpapers, top edge yellow. With the dust jacket. Spine ends lightly rubbed, slight foxing to top edge, occasional faint pencil underlining. An excellent copy in price-clipped jacket with slightly scuffed spine. First edition, first printing of Watson's personal account of the discovery of the structure of DNA. The Double Helix is one of the most important first-hand accounts of the practice of science during the 20th-century, written "with a Pepys-like frankness" and chronicling not only the wonder and beauty of a major breakthrough, but also the politics and turf wars of researchers battling for scientific glory. With the ownership inscription of economist and diplomat Eric Roll (1907–2005) and his wife, Freda. Roll was born in Romania but moved to England to attend university, becoming an economics professor at Hull in 1930 and a British citizen in 1931. He was awarded a Rockefeller Fellowship in 1939 and he and his wife sailed for the US, spending most of the Second World War in Washington D. C., where Roll was plunged into international politics as a British diplomat concerned with food policies. Following the war Roll returned to Britain and was responsible for the UK's success in the Marshall Plan negotiations; served as an envoy to NATO; and became one of the "flying knights" of the Brussels negotiations, before retiring from public service to become a banker. A beautiful copy, uncommon in such excellent condition.

For the Sake of a Single Verse

One of 200 copies, signed by Shahn out of a total edition of 950. This being number eighteen. Complete with twenty-four lithographs, on Richard de Bas hand-made paper, each signed by the artist. Large folio.Lithographs are loose as issued. Housed in a half vellum over cloth clamshell. Clamshell is embossed on the front with an image of a hand with a pen. Spine of the clamshell lettered in gilt. A fine copy.\"I had now long ago found in Rilke the passage that came to mean so much to me. He was a writer about the processes of art who was not telling me what to do, what to think, how to paint. No; he was too engrossed in his own discoveries. He was sharing with me the doubts and the hesitations of art, the probings, the slow emergence of forms. His every line of writing was art, and yet such art was inseparable from its life content. No manifesto could ever tell me more clearly than this one paragraph of Rilke\'s that art is an emanation from a person; that it is shaped and formed out of the shape and form of that person. In being so acutely personal to him it achieves also a rare universality. Rilke is speaking, (is he not?) to the innermost recesses of the consciousness, an area in which we spend so much of our time and expend so much of our feeling, and yet an area that is so remote from communication with our fellow-beings, an area that is, unhappily, increasingly remote from the reaches of art. \" (From the Afterward by Ben Shahn).HBS 66038.$13,500

        Poems

London: Enitharmon Press, 1968 Limited edition of 200 numbered copies, with the publisher's errata slip laid in. Signed by Pinter on the limitation page. Publisher's ¼ red morocco over black cloth boards, ruled in gilt, spine lettered in gilt, printed on watermarked laid paper. Fine with just the barest hint of light toning to the spine, extremely bright and clean interior. A beautiful book in excellent condition. Poems is Harold Pinter's first collection of poetry, containing verses primarily written between the years 1948-1958. Specifically, it includes "New Year in the Midlands," "Book of Mirrors," "The Error of Alarm," "The Table," and "Chandeliers and Shadows," among others. Although he is best known as a playwright, Harold Pinter was a lifelong poet who began writing his first verses as a child. While his later poetry reflects the more fine-tuned work of a mature artist, the poetry in this collection was largely written before his career as a successful dramatist took off in the late 1950s, showing insight into Pinter's early writing style that formed the basis for his later masterpieces. This first edition of Poems was printed in a limited edition. The second edition, also published in a limited edition by Enitharmon, was published three years later in 1971 with 9 additional poems.. Signed by Author. Limited. Hard Cover. Fine.

The Double Helix (Uncorrected Proof, US First Edition and UK Edition, Signed)

New York: Antheneum, 1968. First printing. Very good in wraps, showing some light overall soiling and tanning, a faint cup ring to lower mid front, very slight wear at the upper comb binding. Offsetting to the first page, showing the outline of a since-lost clipping; two paper-clip impressions to the same page. Laid in is a letter from Simon Michael Bessie, a principal at Atheneum, to a Yale professor, asking for a blurb. The occasional underlining in the text but not overly much; all in all a solid example of the earliest state of what is generally considered one of the most important books in the literature of modern science, and in its most elusive and most uncommon form: The Double Helix in proof is genuinely rare. WITH: Double Helix, stated first edition, very good or better in a mildly edgeworn jacket; AND WITH: Double Helix, Weidenfield & Nicholson, second printing, very good or better in a mildly edgeworn jacket, mild spine roll, this copy signed by Watson on the title page.

He did a number of covers for Amazing Stories and Analog in the early 1970s, and was a Hugo nominee. Included in a number of his outside-the-genre works wereTime Magazine covers of Richard Nixon and Hirohito. Hinge's editor at Amazing Stories in the 70s, Ted White, said of him (after hearing of his death at age 72): "I ran more than half a dozen covers by Mike -- all of which I loved -- as well as interior art and running heads in Amazing/Fantastic." Hinge's last professional commission was the September 1993 Amazing Stories. This piece, a remarkable futuristic/militaristic expression, is believed to have been the basis for a poster in the late 1960's. LArt
