Baker, J. A
London: Collins, 1967. Octavo. Original black boards, title to spine gilt, green endpapers. With the dust jacket. Spine slightly rolled, mild sunning of the upper edges of the boards, faint spotting to the edges of the text block. An excellent copy in the fresh jacket that is just a little faded along the spine panel with a very short closed split to the lower panel. First edition, first impression of this masterpiece of 20th century nature writing, cited by Ted Hughes, Andrew Motion, Werner Herzog, and many others as one of the most important books of its kind. Rare in such lovely condition in the dust jacket. J. A. Baker (1926-1987) was a librarian who spent ten years tracking peregrine falcons in coastal Essex during the 1950s and 60s. This, the first of his two published works, distills his observations of the birds and their changing habitat into a lyrical account of a single year, beginning in autumn with the birds' migration from Scandinavia and ending with their return north in spring. "The book records these months of chase in all their agitated repetitiveness. It describes them in language so intense and incantatory, and yet also so amok with beauty, that the act of bird-watching becomes akin to a shamanic ritual... Baker's most remarkable achievement in The Peregrine, to my mind, is the quality of deep strangeness with which he invests the East Anglian landscape. His Essex - 50 miles from London, aggressively farmed, densely peopled - is somehow made as mysterious, elemental, wild and remote as anywhere in the world. Like Ted Hughes, Baker is able to evoke a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Eisenhower, Dwight D
Garden City, NY: Doubleday & Company, Inc, 1967. First edition of Eisenhower's final book of memoirs. Octavo, original cloth, frontispiece. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title page, "For Mrs. Isabella James with best wishes Dwight D. Eisenhower." Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Jacket design by Patricia Saville Voehl. The informal tone of this, Eisenhower's last volume of memoirs, reflects the author: "the general who hated war, the president who sought peace... quick to anger, quicker to forgive, usually sunny in his disposition... intelligent, well educated, a man of the broadest experience, but the characteristic that mattered most to most Americans was his personality. He loved life and he loved people" (ANB). [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; In Dust Jacket]

Jewison, Norman (director); Alan R. Trustman (screenwriter); Steve McQueen, Faye Dunaway (starring)
Beverly Hills, CA: United Artists / The Mirisch Corporation, 1967. First Draft script for the 1968 film, here under its working title, "The Crown Caper." INSCRIBED on the title page by director and producer Norman Jewison: "To -- / With regards / Norman Jewison." Written for the screen by Alan R. Trustman and starring Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway. At or near the top of a distinguished and polished pile of heist films from the late 1960s that combined humor, style, and suspense, and the film that was the first to employ split-screen imagery (a technique devised by the film's editor, Hal Ashby, who would soon become a prominent director). This particular heist film is of the variety where the heist is loaded up front, with the majority of the film devoted to its aftermath. Winner of the Academy Award for Best Original Song ("The Windmills of Your Mind," by composer Michel Legrand, Alan Bergman, and Marilyn Bergman), and nominated for Best Original Score. Yellow wrappers, with no titles on the front wrapper. Title page present, with a date of March 10, 1967, stated "2nd DRAFT SCREENPLAY," and with credits for screenwriter Trustman and producer-director Jewison. 94 leaves, mimeograph duplication, rectos only. Pages and wrapper Near Fine, bound with two gold brads. In a quarter-leather custom clamshell box. Grant US. Lee, The Heist Film. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Melville, Jean-Pierre (director); Alain Delon (starring)
N.p. N.p., 1967. Collection of 8 borderless reference photographs from the French release of the 1967 film. Arguably Jean-Pierre Melville's crowning achievement (though we feel there are no low points among his crime films), wherein Delon plays an icy hitman who is utterly anonymous, living alone in a single bedroom apartment with only a small bird in a birdcage for company. Things are fine, and then he meets a woman. 9.5 x 8 inches. Near Fine. Criterion Collection 306. Buss, French Film Noir. Ebert I. Grant France. Spicer France.

Adler, Harold (letterer); Norman Jewison (director); John Ball (novel); Stirling Silliphant (screenwriter); Sidney Poitier, Rod Steiger, Warren Oates (starring)
Beverly Hills, CA: The Mirisch Corporation / United Artists, 1967. Collection of five original title card maquettes for the 1967 film hand lettered by Harold Adler. Based on the 1965 novel by John Ball. Harold Adler was a calligrapher who created hand lettered titles on over 100 films, worked frequently with Alfred Hitchcock, and was a favorite of legendary title sequence designers Saul Bass and Pablo Ferro. In addition to "In the Heat of the Night," his credits include "Comanche!" (1956), "The Man with the Golden Arm" (1955), "The Seven Year Itch" (1955), "Carmen Jones" (1954), "Psycho" (1960), "The Birds" (1963), "Justine" (1969), and "Finian's Rainbow" (1969). In 2012, an exhibition of Adler's work was organized by noted typographer and design historian Jill Bell at the American Advertising Federation, Kansas City. A film as much, if not more so, about racial tensions in the Civil Rights era South as it is about a murder investigation, "In the Heat of the Night" won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor (Rod Steiger), and Best Adapted Screenplay. 22 x 13.25 inches. White lettering on black ink, tipped onto black board. Near Fine condition overall, with some light rubbing to the boards, some spotting, and minor fraying at the corners. Holograph numbering and editorial markings to the edges. Plastic tabs affixed tot he top of each card with tape. Collation available on request.
