Pictures to be Read / Poetry to be Seen (multiple)

Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago 1967 - Objects and pamphlet in a plexiglass box with printed label. One of 500 numbered copies. This multiple was created for the supporters and artists who participated in the opening exhibition at Chicago's then newly-founded Museum of Contemporary Art. Museum Director Jan van der Marck invited twelve artists to designate a small object with no intrinsic value "that would somehow be expressive of your likes and ideas". The staff acquired 500 of the selected items and placed one of each in a Plexiglas box along with a small brochure reproducing the artists' correspondence. The box contains a comb (Ray Johnson), crayon (R. B. Kitaj), candy cigar (Jim Nutt), miniature bar of soap (Shusaku Arakawa), safety pin (Gianfranco Baruchello), photograph (Mary Bauermeister), mustard seeds glued on a wooden stick (George Brecht), a pair of small dice (Öyvind Fahlström), a large screw (Allan Kaprow), a bottle cap (Alison Knowles), a fishing lure (Gianni-Emilio Simonetti), and a light bulb (Wolf Vostell). Chapter 12 is marked with a paperclip and extensively scored in the text, including whole paragraphs crossed out or highlighted, whether by Dahlberg or Britton is not immediately clear, but certainly by one of them. The Sorrows of Priapus: Consisting of The Sorrows of Priapus and The Carnal Myth.          The Hairy Who Sideshow

Unpag. (32 pp.) offset lithographed comic book-style artists' book, published in conjunction with an exhibition by the Hairy Who artist group, containing brightly colored drawings and cartoons. Profusely illustrated. Some pages loose, minor scattered pencil notations. 4to. Staple-bound illustrated wrpps., some minor soiling to cover. N.p. (Chicago/Hyde Park Art Center) n.d. (1967). The Hairy Who was one of three groups making up part of the Chicago Imagists art movement, a group of artists associated with the School of the Art Institute of Chicago who exhibited at the Hyde Park Art Center in the late 1960s. They were known for their grotesque and surrealist art and their complete uninvolvement with contemporary art trends taking place in New York City. Six artists in particular made up the Hairy Who: Jim Nutt, Gladys Nilsson, James Falconer, Art Green, Suellen Rocca, and Karl Wirsum. They held three exhibitions from 1966 to 1968, esoterically naming the shows "Hairy Who?", after a member of the group was heard asking "Harry who?" about the artist and art critic Harry Bouras. Through visual puns and an incredible use of color, they crafted new ways of thinking about figurative art. The publications they created for their exhibitions were formatted like comic books and are among the first full-color self-published artists' books.

Avantgarda Bez Legend a Mýtu: Rozhlasový Cyklus o Patnácti Dílech [The Avant-Garde without Legends and Myths: A Radio Series in Fifteen Parts]

Five mimeographed typed booklets, each approx. 20-24 pp., comprising a full transcript of all fourteen parts of a Czech radio series (15th part never printed), issued in limited distribution to a small group of readers, which reintroduced listeners to the interwar-period avant-garde movement, both in Czechoslovakia and abroad, covering topics including architecture, music, theater, and art. Not illustrated. 8vo. Original mimeographed stapled self-wrpps., loosely housed together in decorative paper wrpps. Prague (Rozhlasový Cycklus) 1967. Together with two letters from eskoslovenský Rozhlas (Czechoslovak Radio) which accompanied the original order of the text. This radio program was produced during the short time in between the strict post-war Communist regime and the equally strict Normalization period which followed the Prague Spring of 1968, both time periods when discussion of topics such as the avant-garde was repressed. The first section was dedicated to the concept of "poetismus", or poetism, a Czech idea which encouraged viewing the world optimistically, abandoning politics, and looking at life as a poem. Various authors, scholars, artists, directors, and composers contributed to the series, including Jaroslav Seifer, Karel Teige, Vít zslav Nezval, Adolf Hoffmeister, Jan Zrzavý, Jirí Menzel, Vratislav Effenberger, and others. The installments were never published as a trade edition, and each part notes the limited publication, for a small number of specialist listeners. Very scarce; as of September 2017, WorldCat does not show a single listing in North America.

         Treatise

Buffalo: Gallery Upstairs Press, 1967. Paperback. Very good. First Edition. 193pp. Publisher's plastic comb bound wraps. Just a hint of tanning to the edges of the wraps, else a fine copy of the first published edition of Cardew's masterpiece that has been interpreted by numerous artists including Sonic Youth. Comprising 193 pages of lines, symbols, and various geometric or abstract shapes that eschew convention and allows for absolute interpretive freedom by the performers. As much an artist's book as a musical score from one of the giants in early experimental music. Cardew trained under Stockhausen, playing cello in the group AMM Music on their classic eponymous first record and later founded the Scratch Orchestra before embracing Maoism and completely repudiating all of his avant garde work.

Fine in a near fine dust jacket that shows only the lightest of wear. Signed by the author. A very sharp copy of this economic highspot. Galbraith's ideas often addressed the influence of the potential market power of large corporations (Dunn and Pressman, 2005). He believed that corporations could become price makers, rather than price takers, by weakening the accepted principle of consumer sovereignty (Galbraith, 1970). This, in turn, allowed corporations to efficiently increase the production of their goods if they could achieve the strongest market power. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
