         Ravachol: ein zyklus

Vienna and Munich: Jugend und Volk, 1967-1969. Limited edition. Ausgabe A (set XIII of XX). Illustrated portfolio, with red cloth spine over illustrated boards (printed red on black), resting an impressive 50 cm. tall. Boards show some scuffing, with wear to corners and some warping to the closing panels on the side. Portfolio houses a suite of 12 etchings of various dimensions (from 17 x 32 cm. to 40 x 24 cm.), along with an original ink-and-wash sketch (24 x 32 cm.); all prints signed and dated in pencil (1967 or 1968). Each print laid loose into windowed mats, uniformly measuring 49 x 40 cm. With spotting to the margins of the prints from offsetting of black paper mats, not affecting images. Portfolio being accompanied by the 1969 trade publication from Jugend und Volk; cloth-bound boards (32 cm.), housed in illustrated slipcase with matching image tothe larger portfolio. Contents well-illustrated, with text in German; 68 pages. During the tumultuous period of 1967–1968, Viennese graphic artist Hans Escher revisited the career of the legendary French anarchist Ravachol (the maternal pseudonym for François Claudius Koenigstein), producing a narrative cycle of twelve etchings and twenty ink-and-wash sketches. As strikingly captured on the front of the portfolio, Ravachol was ultimately guillotined for a series of bombings that protested State violence in the decades following the Paris Commune. In 1969, Escher's images would be reproduced in book form by Jugend und Volk, accompanied by translated excerpts from Jean Maitron's biography of Ravachol, along with a critical essay by Johann Muschik on the contemporaneity of Escher's graphical interpretation of the anarchist legend. The limited edition of this publication (of which this is XIII of XX) included twenty large portfolios, each of them containing a complete suite of the full-sized etchings, signed and numbered by Escher, as well as one of the original twenty ink-and-wash sketches—in this instance, of Ravachol's arrest in the streets. While three of the etchings are individually reported by the BnF, we were unable to discover records for the complete portfolio on WorldCat.

         Erotiques

Atlas Shrugged

New York: Random House, 1967. Tenth Anniversary edition; one of 2000 numbered and signed copies of one of the most influential novels of the twentieth century. Octavo, original blue cloth. Fine in the original slipcase, with the original acetate. A very sharp example. The theme of Atlas Shrugged, as Rand described it, is "the role of man's mind in existence." The book explores a number of philosophical themes that Rand would subsequently develop into the philosophy of Objectivism. By 1984 more than five million copies of Atlas Shrugged had been sold, and in a 1991 Library of Congress survey Americans named it second only to the Bible as the book that had most influenced their lives.

Collection of Photographs and Ephemera from the German Student Movement

Binder of material from the APO (Außerparlamentarische Opposition) political protest group, with 63 original photographs of major figures from the revolt including Rudi Dutschke, Beate Klarsfeld, Rainer Langhans, Günter Grass, Rolf Dahrendorf, Wolfgang Lefevre, Klaus Meschkat, the music group "Insterburg & Co" and others; together with approximately 40 documents comprising newspaper clippings, brochures, and leaflets on topics including the military dictatorship in Greece and Chile, the Vietnam War, demonstrations, the SDS, the slap in the face of Chancelor Kurt Kiesinger by Beate Klarsfeld, and other topics. Illustrated. Various sizes, 4to. overall. Housed in a modern three-ring binder, items variously hole-punched, housed in sheet protectors, or mounted to cardstock. Various, primarily Berlin, 1967-1973. The APO was active in Western Germany during the latter half of the 1960s and early 1970s, forming a key part of the German student movement. The APO is sometimes used synonymously with the student movement, since it was at the time the most prominent form of opposition to the coalition of the Social Democratic Party and the Christian Democratic Union. Its members called primarily for the constitutional freedoms of opinion, of press, and of assembly, as well as a democratization of university politics. They protested against the Vietnam War, and idolized Che Guevara and Ho Chi Minh. This collection is an interesting and rich compilation of original material related to those protests, which marked a key moment in Germany's history.

         The Best of Moe: Summations

Trial Lawyers Service Company 1967 - B0006BPVXO 1967 first edition, Trial Lawyers Service Co. (Belleville, Illinois), 5 7/8 x 8 5/8 inches tall grey cloth hardcover, no dust jacket, gilt design and lettering to front cover and spine, 237 pp. Orange stains to gilt image of Levine on front cover. Slight soiling and mild to moderate rubbing and edgewear to covers. Otherwise, a very good copy - clean, bright and unmarked - of this scarce first edition of one of renowned trial lawyer Moe Levine's most popular books, on closing argument at trial. ~SP37~ Moe Levine (1906-1974) is regarded as one of the greatest legal minds of the twentieth Century, and revolutionized the art of presenting a case at trial. His interests in both religion, science, and history allowed him to speak the jury on numerous levels. He is described as being able to quote scripture like Billy Graham on one day and then use the logic of Clarence Darrow the following day. He developed the 'whole man theory,' and successfully argued to many juries that you cannot injure part of a man, but rather that you injure the whole person. He argued that pain destroys a life, and that any loss of life, loss of mobility, or loss of ability, no matter how insignificant it may seem to society, has an impact to the people who loved that person. He had significant interest in the science of medicine, and had great skill at interpreting those details to juries. Contents: Precepts of Persuasion; Death of an Alcoholic; Damages for Burns, Product Liability; Thesis of the Whole Man; Psychological Consequences of Minor Injuries to a Child; Disturbance of Marital Relationship, a Summation Against Adversary Harrassment; Damages for Destruction of Dignity and Pride; Previous Illness, Difficult Liability; Unemployability, Not Disability; Aggravation of Prior Condition, Impairment of Enjoyment of Living; Economic Replacement, Loss of Mother; Impairment of Intellect, Child Darting Case; An Evaluation of Pain, Back Injury; Damages from Second Injury Resulting from First; The Psychology of the Closing Argument.       New York: Random House, 1967. Fine/Near Fine. First edition. Fine in near fine dustwrapper with a creased tear on the front panel and a couple of small tears. Inscribed by Levin to Tony Award-winning actress Marian Seldes: "11/7/78. To Marian Seldes, Who waited eleven years to be done in by me. With love, Ira Levin." Seldes was the leading lady in Levin's Tony Award-winning play Deathtrap (in which she is killed, thus explaining the inscription). Seldes has made a couple of tiny pencil notes indicating this was signed at the theatre at a performance of Deathtrap. Laid in is an advertisement from a trade publication lauding the acting of Ruth Gordon in Rosemary's Baby. After Gordon's death, Seldes married Gordon's widowed husband, the author and director Garson Kanin. Marian Seldes won a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in 1967 for her appearance in Edward Albee's A Delicate Balance, as well as receiving four more nominations in acting categories (including for Deathtrap). In 2010 she won a Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre.A nice copy of this gothic horror story, source for a memorable Roman Polanski film with Mia Farrow, John Cassavetes, and Ruth Gordon, who won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, complete with an excellent association.
