Sixth New York Film Festival (Original serigraph poster, one of 144 signed by Pearson)

Lincoln Center / List Art Poster and Print Program, New York 1968 - Original serigraph designed by artist Henry Pearson for the Sixth New York Film Festival, held at Lincoln Center on September 17-28, 1968. One of 144 copies (this being No. 138) SIGNED and NUMBERED by Pearson. The New York Film Festival was founded in 1963 by Amos Vogel and Richard Roud, and to this day serves as a major taste-maker for American cinephiles, bringing the best films from around the world by directors established, new, and forgotten. The 1968 festival began with Jiri Menzel's "Capricious Summer," concluded with Milos Forman's "The Fireman's Ball" and featured "The Boy with the Green Hair" by Joseph Losey and "They Live By Night" by Nicholas Ray among its retrospective features. As influential and forward-thinking as the festival is, it is matched by its iconic poster designs. Developed by Vera List, a New York City art collector and philanthropist, the poster program commissioned some the most famous artist of the day to design posters that would function as much as art as advertisement. In addition to Pearson, artists who have designed posters for the festival include Larry Rivers, Saul Bass, Bruce Conner, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Richard Avedon, Robert Rauschenberg, and Cindy Sherman.Amos Vogel (1921-2012) was one of the most influential cineastes in New York City. He is best known for his bestselling book "Film as a Subversive Art" (1974) and as the founder of the New York City avantgarde ciné-club Cinema 16 (1947-1963), where he was the first programmer to present films by Roman Polanski, John Cassavetes, Nagisa Oshima, Jacques Rivette and Alain Resnais as well as early and important screenings by American avant-gardists of the time like Stan Brakhage, Maya Deren, James Broughton, Kenneth Anger, Sidney Peterson, Bruce Conner, Carmen D'Avino and many others. In 1963, together with Richard Roud, he founded the New York Film Festival, and served as its program director until 1968. In 1973, Vogel started the Annenberg Cinematheque at the University of Pennsylvania and was eventually given a Chair for film studies at the Annenberg School for Communication, where he taught and lectured for two decades.Minor cracking to some of the titling, else Fine.         Ink drawing of Charlie Chaplin a' la Vigo's "Zero de conduit," 1968

N.p., N.p. 1968 - Two color ink drawing of Charlie Chaplin in silhouette, titled "Chaplin a' la Vigo's 'Zero de conduit'" by noted radical caricaturist Robert Osborn. The title makes reference to French filmmaker Jean Vigo's 1933 film, "Zéro de conduite," and the drawing, unpublished, was a gift to Osborn's friend Amos Vogel, inscribed at the bottom left corner, "For Amos / 68." Accompanying the drawing is a 3-page note from Osborn to Vogel, executed in calligraphic style black ink, reading: "dear Amos / this, in gratitude for all you do for us. It is vastly appreciated. / Bob Osborn / 2 / P.S. / As I told you you do the whole cultural community a GREAT service / Take "Fairy Tale" - I'd never have seen it save for you. / Also that good Sue Salter has been VERY helpful. & cheerful!"One of Osborn's last great exhibitions was devoted to Chaplin. Reviewing that show in The New York Times, art critic John Russell wrote: "Few people have a nimbler, wittier or more versatile way with pen and pencil than Robert Osborn."Osborn (1904-1994) was nothing if not the artist's artist. The New York Times obituary for him noted that his "sardonic and often savage drawings in books and magazines have arrested readers with their images of bloated power, violence and death. At the same time, he could be wittily ironic about society's pretensions, spoofing subjects like psychiatry, suburbanites and social climbing." He characterized himself as "a drawer" whose figures "seemed to come right out of my subconscious." Garry Trudeau called him "one of the very few masters of illustrative cartooning." Robert Motherwell wrote that his drawings were "so alive that they seemed to writhe on the page with an uninhibited energy . Osborn's art is a call to responsible action." Motherwell was among those who compared Osborn's graphic work to that of Daumier, Goya, Saul Steinberg, as well as to the sculpture of Alexander Calder, who was a friend of Osborn's.Amos Vogel (1921-2012) was one of the most influential cineastes in New York City. Der Prolog der hebr?ischen Bibel. Der literar- und theologiegeschichtliche Diskurs der Urgeschichte (Genesis 1-11) [Gebundene Ausgabe] von Andreas Sch?le (Autor) Reihe/Serie Abhandlungen zur Theologie des Alten und Neuen Testaments ; 86

TVZ Theologischer Verlag, 1968. Bengston was the real life "Moondoggie" to Kathy Kohner's "Gidget" in the popular Frederick Kohner novel of the same name, and the frontispiece portrait of the artist as a young man is by Don Bachardy. The design and installation for the Los Angeles County Museum of Art exhibition was by Frank Gehry! A most presentable example of this uncommon, ultra-cool Ruscha-inflected objet with the publisher's pink silk ribbon bookmark still present showing mild overall wear, creasing and some trivial chipping to the sandpaper covers, and soiling to the edges of the textblock with the often missing "67X The Authorized Version / Bengston Bio" attributed to Alan D. Shean printed as a single tissue sheet laid in, as issued. It has been priced accordingly. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its value - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase.         UPTOWN N.Y. / POSTER DRESS

London: Poster Dress (Nodina Products Corporation), [ca.1968]. First Edition. Original paper dress (75% rayon, 25% nylon), size Small, folded as-issued and housed in the original manufacturer's plastic packaging, with stapled card header and advertising insert. Measures 30.5cm x 40cm (12" x 15.75"). Dress is Fine; plastic bag neatly opened along upper edge, with some light wear to header and general wear overall; Near Fine. Stunning example of this scarce Ginsberg item, a relic of the mid-late 1960's when "disposable" clothing was briefly all the rage. Paper dresses could be used repeatedly, and according to the manufacturer, "when you're finally tired of wearing it, why not...cut open all the seams and hang it on your wall as a poster." The present example, desgined by British fashion designer Harry Gordon, featured a screenprinted hand in a meditative pose on both sides, with Ginsberg's poem "Uptown N.Y." printed on the palms. An uncommon item that was never built to last. OCLC finds 5 examples (Brown, Yale, SUNY Buffalo, UCLA, UNC Chapel Hill), and we note 2 other examples at the Ransom Center. Morgan E45, p.325.

Archive of photographs featuring Frank Zappa, circa 1968

N.p.: N.p., 1968. Archive of five black and white, double weight photographs of Frank Zappa, in his iconic "Rental" T-shirt, at a press conference circa 1968, most apparently unpublished. By noted photographer Michael Montfort, each stamped "Copyright by Michael Montfort" and "Frank Zappa Montfort" on the verso, from the photographer's estate. Born in Freiburg, Germany, Michael Montfort began his career working as a photojournalist for German magazines such as "Stern," "Quick," and "Bild am Sonntag." In addition to shooting numerous rock and jazz performances, he covered Queen Elizabeth's 1965 visit to Germany, the aftermath of the Six Day War in Israel and Egypt, and the May 1968 protests in Paris. Montfort emigrated to Los Angeles in 1973 and began working as a freelancer. Four years later, on assignment for the German literary magazine "Rogners," Montfort was sent to photograph Charles Bukowski. Aided by the case of wine he smartly brought with him to their first meeting, Montfort connected with the publicity-shy and splenetic poet. Over the next two decades, as both Bukowski's drinking buddy and personal photographer, he shot literary thousands of images of Bukowski and collaborated with him on titles such as "Horsemeat," "Shakespeare Never Did This," and "The Wedding." In addition to Bukowski, Montfort shot notable photographs of luminaries such as William S. Burroughs, Klaus Kinski, Brigitte Bardot, and a Jackson 5 era Michael Jackson. One photograph 11.25 x 8 inches (28.5 x 20.25 cm), the rest roughly 11.5 x 9 inches (29.25 x 23 cm). About Fine.
