        Souper Dress

Campbell's Soup Co, 1968. Used; Like New/Used; Like New. "Campbell's Souper Dress, on you, it'll lookâ?¦ M'm ! M'm ! Good !" - CAMPBELL SOUP ADVERTISEMENTScreenprint in colors on a disposable A-line dress made of screen-printed tissue, wood pulp and rayon mesh with binding tape, circa 1965, labeled 'The Souper Dress' at the neck, from the edition of unknown size, vertical and horizontal folds (as issued), wear/losses along parts of several of the folds, but this example, unlike most, does not have the bottom 3-inch hem cut off, and is thus complete. 36½ x 21½ in. (927 x 546 mm.). Beautifully framed in conservation-grade materials under UV-plexi. <br>The  Souper Dress  is a classic example where fashion, art and industry intersect into one image, capturing the vibrant, youthful, optimistic and consumerist zeitgeist of the 1960s in America to perfection.  As art historian Marco Livingstone has stressed, Pop Art was never a circumscribed movement with membership and manifestos. Rather, it was a sensibility emergent in the 1950s and rampant in the 1960s. Andy Warhol (who began his career as a fashion illustrator) had been painting Campbell's soup cans since 1962. Such advertising icons, along with cartoons and billboards, yielded a synthesis of word and image, of art and the everyday and fashion quickly embraced the spirit of Pop, playing an important role in its dissemination. The Souper Dress inspired by the iconic Campbell Soup Cans series,  flame-resistant unless previously washed or cleaned, was imagined and produced by the Campbell Soup Company as a mail order offer and as an effective advertising campaign when paper dresses were all the rage in the 60s. Two labels from any different kinds of Campbell's Vegetable Soups and $1.00 got you the dress.

Insolations. No. 1 (June 1968) through no. 3 (December 1968) (all published): I. Tourmente. II. Sorbonne. III. Le Seul Mot de Liberté est Tout ce qui m'Exalte Encore

A complete run of the three issues of the radical anarchist, situationist, and artistic periodical published at the time of and following the student-led unrest in Paris 1968, each issue presenting collaboratively edited writings and visual art by noted cultural figures, profusely illustrated throughout. Original boards portfolios with original labels, contents loose as issued. Montpellier (Editions Fata Morgana) 1968. Issue #1, 1 of 130 copies; Issue #2 H.C. (200 numbered copies), Issue #3, 1 of 200 copies. An extremely rare cultural document reflecting the free-wheeling spirit of the moment in both content and presentation. The first issue presents 11 poems by Michel Butor, with calligraphy, drawings and prints by Pierre Alechinsky, Jacques Herold, and Bernard Dufour; the second includes contributions by Jean Pierre Faye, Claude Ollier, Maurice Roche, Roberto Matta, and Dufour; the final issue includes texts by Pierre Guyotat, Denis Roche, Romain Weingarten, and Kateb Yacine, with illustrations by Dufour, Wifredo Lam, Francois Lunven, and Ipousteguy. A fine set of a document emblematic of the turmoil of 1968. Very scarce; although scattered single issues and later reprints exist, as of February 2016 WorldCat locates only a single complete and original run in North America.

Andy Warhol. Moderna Museet, Stockholm, February-March 1968 (The Stockholm Catalogue, First Edition, 1st Printing).

Stockholm: Moderna Museet, 1968. 4to. Original pictorial wrappers - which a previous owner had protected in seethrough plastic and therefore extremely well preserved. The cover is printed in pink, yellow, orange, and green, lettered in black on spine. (638 pp.). Profusely illustrated with full-page black and white photographs by Billy Name and Stephen Eric Shore among others. Minor creases to cover front and back and first two pages with small tears to edges, nothing missing though. Overall a very well preserved copy, clean and sound. More pictures available upon request. First edition, first printing, of the famous Warhol Stockholm-catalogue. The catalogue for Warhol's first major European retrospective. Illustrated card covers, with a design after Warhol's 'Flowers' silk-screen. 614 black-and-white reproductions, divided into three sections: black-and-white reproductions of Warhol's work, followed by two sections of photographs of Warhol and his associates by Billy Name and Stephen Shore. ""As soon as the Factory opened, it became a hyperactive place. People began flocking there in droves for parties, to interview Andy, to take pictures, to make films, to become a part of it... Billy [Name] ran it like a theatre, vacuuming up after each performance and continually repainting the tinfoiling. He also became the Factory's official recorder when Andy gave him his 35-mm camera and Billy began taking great photographs of the action, which he developed in an impromptu darkroom converted from one of the toilets. These photographs, as collected in the 1968 Moderna Muséet catalogue of Warhol's first European retrospective in Stockholm, constitute the best visual documentary of the Silver Factory." -Voctor Bockris, Warhol: The Biography. Warhol's Moderna Muséet catalog "is a fine example of the catalogue-as-artist's-book, a form that ostensibly began with the Dadaists and Surrealists, and is produced with some of the roughest reproductions ever seen, which are entirely appropriate, and supplemented by a long section of Factory snapshots by Billy Name. The genre was revitalized by the Pop movement, and Warhol in particular, which demonstrates his position as a latter-day Dadaist. The Moderna Museet publication especially had a great influence upon Japanese photography in the late 1960s and 1970s, particularly the photobooks of the Provoke era" (Parr and Badger, Vol II). Published by Moderna Muséet, Sweden, in 1968 as an exhibition catalogue for the show "Andy Warhol" at the Moderna Muséet in Stockholm, February - March, 1968.

BEGINNING OF THE OFFICE OF THE DEAD

Paris, early 15th century. n. Apart from those relatively few copies with illustrated calendars, the miniatures found in Books of Hours are almost entirely devoted to retrospective Bible scenes that are obviously outside the experience of the illuminator; it is only in the present kind of funeral scene at the beginning of the Office of the Dead that we can see a contemporaneous rendering of a scene from the daily life of the Middle Ages. Miniatures that begin the Office of the Dead vary more in iconographic terms than any of the others that recur in the Book of Hours, and while our painting is typical in subject matter and design, it is noteworthy in at least a couple of ways. The frame and border here are beautifully executed in the style of the Boucicaut Master, with much delicate and very elaborate painting, all of which is shown to good advantage inside unusually comfortable margins. And although the miniature itself shows in general a relatively primitive attempt at perspective (for example, the pews and the altar are steeply raked), the presence of the lovely slender column in the foreground, in concert with the darkened vaulting behind the altar, gives the painting a convincing sense of depth. The work here was done by an artist under Parisian influence, and the developed architecture suggests that the painter was familiar with the Burial Services compositions created by Parisian illuminators in the 1410s. (see Millard Meiss, "French Painting in the Time of Jean de Berry: Boucicaut Master," London, 1968, figs. 135-50 and 172-74). 178 x 125 mm. (7 x 5"). Text in single column (four lines on recto, 15 lines on verso) in an excellent gothic book hand. A FINE SQUARE MINIATURE SHOWING A FUNERAL SERVICE, two priests reciting from an elevated lectern and next to a large draped coffin, mourners in black seated to the left, the activity taking place inside a space enclosed by elegant columns and under a vaulted ceiling, a lovely four-line initial beneath it in burnished gold and several colors, infilled with ivy leaves in white and orange, other one- or two-line initials in blue with red penwork or (on the verso) in burnished gold and colors, THE MINIATURE SURROUNDED BY AN EXQUISITE FULL BORDER OF IVY LEAVES in colors or gold on painted and hairline stems. Remains of mounting hinge at top, a few speckles, a bit of yellowing, and slight wrinkling in margins, but the leaf very well preserved in general, with no significant flaking of paint and with the gold still bright. Three Sketchbooks of Original Art Documenting Construction Projects in Pennsylvania and Maryland

Maryland and Pennsylvania 1968 - Three 8" x 11" standard-size spiral notebooks containing approximately 425 pages, almost all filled with detailed pencil sketches of construction sites. Photographs and clippings from magazines and newspapers are both laid in and attached to about ten pages. Among the many projects documented in the sketchbooks are work at Gifforf Pinchot State Park, the expressway that would become Interstate 83, the filtering basins for the P. H. Gatfelter Co., the Quarryville Sr. High School, U.S. 30 and 230, Borg-Warner Corporation headquarters, etc. The vehicles and equipment in Karsten's drawings are usually annotated with company, manufacturer, numbering, and/or license information. The sketches and photographs are all in nice shape. The clippings have tape stains. Karsten was a talented artist from York, Pennsylvania whose works have appeared on national magazine covers, juried shows, and in public and private collections. At 22, he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore with a major in painting with a minor in sculpture and intaglio printmaking. He graduated cum laude, then then earned a master's degree at the Huffberger School of Painting, again majoring in painting and minoring in printmaking. He became an Associate Professor of Art at Louisiana Tech University and taught there from 1968 to 1984 when he relocated to Red Lion, Pennsylvania where he worked as a fine artist and illustrator. His life-long fascination with trucks, trains, and horse racing is evident in much of his work. Karsten released a popular series of truck lithographs based upon his original oil paintings, and he was even more successful with his studies of railroad trains. His works were used as the cover illustrations for two books about the Norfolk & Western Railway and one about the Seaboard Air Line Railroad. Additionally, Karsten was commissioned by a Montgomery, Alabama hobby shop to paint a number famous trains that were turned into an even more successful lithograph series which are now highly sought after by model railroads, "rail fans," and other train aficionados. Karsten never married, and in later years, he was devoted to caring for his elderly mother. Karsten became despondent when his mother died in 1996 and shortly thereafter committed suicide upon being diagnosed with macular degeneration. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

[Geographic Maps of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia]. [Washington & Jiddah, 1968-1982].

1968. 21 sheets in full colour, each 101 x 103 to 88 x 63 cm approx., folded in original printed envelopes with individual titles. English and Arabic. Scale 1:500,000; relief shown by hachures and spot heights. Complete collection of the detailed geographical maps ("B" series) of Saudi Arabia (but also covering Bahrain and Qatar) prepared by the U.S. Geological Survey and the Arabian American Oil Company under the joint sponsorship of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the U.S. Department of State. "Although the search for oil, gas and minerals was ultimately to drive geological survey work across the region [...], in its early years it was the need for water that was the catalyst for Saudi Arabia's resource exploration. In 1944 King 'Abd al-'Aziz approached the United States for a technical expert who could assist with the identification and plotting of the kingdom's natural resources, particularly its groundwater reserves [...] By 1954 the Saudi Ministry of Finance, USGS and Aramco were working together to produce the first full series of geographic and geologic maps of the country. The first of their type in the Peninsula, these were published between 1960 and 1963 in both Arabic and English versions, and the information they contained formed the basis of subsequent Saudi national development plans. To this day, all modern maps of the kingdom trace their roots back to these first publications" (Parry). The surveyors divided the Peninsula into 21 quadrangular sections, numbered 200 through 220. Mixed copy conflated from both the U.S. and the Saudi-Arabian series, prefixed "I" and "GM", respectively. Well preserved. James V. Parry, "Mapping Arabia", in: Saudi Aramco World 2004/1, p. 20ff.

J.N. Bakhuizen van den Brink, "De seconde epistre van Gervien Hervat", in: Ned. Archief v. Kerkgesch., 48 (1968), pp. 169-212 (discussing all 4 Hervet works); USTC 45253 (cf. 88267, barely distinguishable), 4528, 20245, 41867, 740 (ads 1-5); cf. Brunet III, 137-138; STC French p. 224; none in Adams; for Hervet: Nouv. Biogr. Gén. 24, cols. 536-40; G. Wylie Sypher, "'Faisant ce qu'il leur vient a plaisir': the image of Protestantism in French Catholic polemic on the eve of the religious wars", in: Sixteenth century journal, 11/2 (1980), pp. 59-84. Five rare French polemical works on the Counter-Reformation, all first published in 1561, here with three or four in their first editions: 3 barbed anti-Protestant "Epistres" by the translator, patristic scholar and defender of the Catholic faith Gentien Hervet (1499-1584), with the third known copy of the first and only edition of an anonymous Protestant Response to one or both of the Deux epistres and the first edition of Hervet's Apologie defending his views against the claims of the Response. Hervet states in his Apologie that he does not know the name of the author of the Response and therefore addresses him as "Monsieur l'Un pour Tous", but the Response was addressed to "fideles de l'Eglise Reformee d'Orleans" and the Apologie title-page supposes the Response came from the "Ministres de la nouvelle eglise d'Orleans", so it may have been written by Daniel Toussain (1541-1602), ordained in the Orléans Reformed Church in 1561. The first epistle (ad 1) is addressed to the devout Catholics, warning them of the Protestants, but the next two (ads 2 & 3) are more provocatively addressed to the ministers and supporters of the new Protestant Church. This provoked the Response, which in turn provoked Hervet's Apologia. All five editions are rare, but especially the anonymous Response (ad 4). The USTC records only 2 copies, and records no other edition. With 3 contemporary or near contemporary inscriptions on the title-page, 2 struck through (1 perhaps reading "Robert Rey" or "Reny" or "Reng") and the third by "Francois Thiboult", this last repeated on the Response title-page. With contemporary ms. annotations in ink in all 5 works. First title-page sightly soiled and some light, most marginal waterstains in the last work, but still in good condition. Five rare works by and responding to the French Counter-Reformationist Gentian Hervet.

Parachute to Paradise (Original screenplay for the unreleased 1969 film)

American Broadcasting Company [ABC], New York 1968 - Revised draft script for the unreleased 1969 film, "Parachute to Paradise," with a single notation on the title page. Written for screen by Allan Gittler, the New York-based minimalist designer of electric guitars, and a virtuoso musician, who later changed his name to Avraham Bar Rashi. Gittler was a film editor in New York during the 1960s and 1970s, patented a photographic printer for motion pictures, wrote a novel called "The Rose-Colored View," and made an 18-minute short film called "New York, New York, New York," comprised of 700 photo stills, and a score that he and jazzman Elvin Jones composed. He died in 2003.Roger Davis, an actor in the film, notes that it was completed, but not shown until a broadcast on ABC in 1972. Davis: "[It was] written by the late guitar designer Allan Gittler (a.k.a. Avraham Bar Rashi,), directed by Floyd L. Petersen [sic], scored by [noted jazz arranger] Gil Evans, and also starred Natividad Abascal, Astrid Aanning, Martin J. Kelley, Bret Morrison, and the Boston garage band, The Bagatelle. was an avant-garde 'film fantasy' where Roger played the hero of a popular cigarette commercial campaign who happens to skydive. It was filmed in the summer of 1968 (beginning June 3) during Roger's short leave of absence from 'Dark Shadows'. ABC televised the movie in 1972, at the height of Roger's popularity on 'Alias Smith and Jones.' Since [the film] has gone ignored by IMDB and other web sources, here are some reflections provided by writer Gittler to 'Vintage Guitar' magazine in 2000: 'I had had enough of my career, and quit to ride my track bike through Central Park and write the script of my movie, 'Parachute to Paradise.' After the heartiness of 15 weeks of preproduction, casting the principal players and 200 extras, seven weeks of principal photography, writing the music, and seven months of editing and (doing) enormous publicity, a fallout with my producer relegated the production to a couple of cans in the laboratory vault.'"Gittler's only film credit: guitarist in "Hold for Gloria Christmas," an episode of "Naked City" (Season 4, Episode 1, 1962).Purple titled wrappers, with a credit for Gittler. Title page present, noted as "a film," with a credit for Gittler. 71 leaves, mimeograph, with white revision pages throughout, dated variously between 3/11/68 and 3/20/68.         Isadora (Original screenplay for the 1968 film)

Universal Pictures, Universal City, CA 1968 - Draft British script for the 1968 film. A high spot for Vanessa Redgrave in the 1960s, a story that follows the life of the free spirited modern interpretive dancer Isadora Duncan. From Dan Pavlides at Allmovie: Trained in classical dance, Duncan shattered the traditional conformities in her art and her personal life. The film begins at the end of her life as she recalls the past while dictating her memoirs to her male secretary. Her uninhibited sexuality and insistence on personal freedom and expression shocked more conservative and narrow-minded patrons and audiences. She brought in elements of classic Greek dance during the height of the jazz age and had children in and out of wedlock. Married to sewing-machine heir Paris Singer (Jason Robards) and the Russian poet Sergei Essenin (Ivan Tchenko), her life was a rollercoaster ride of success and tragic failures. Two of her children drowned when her chauffeur left the car unattended and the vehicle plunged into a river. Duncan lived by her own rules, often shunned by the very people who had so passionately embraced her pioneering efforts in dance, women's liberation and free thinking. Redgrave was nominated for an Oscar for her performance. The film's locales are international and range from California to Europe and the Soviet Union. Shot on location in various places in England, Italy, France, and Eastern Europe. Red titled wrappers, with a die-cut title window in the British style. Title page present. 142 leaves, roneograph.
