        NEW YORK: NEW ART SCENE

(MULAS, UGO). Solomon, Alan & Ugo Mulas. NEW YORK: NEW ART SCENE. New York: Holt, Rinehart and Winston, 1967. First Edition. 4to. Cloth in Pictorial Dust Jacket. Photography Monograph. Near Fine/Good +. 344pp, profusely illustrated in b&w. Designed by Michele Provinciale. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. "New York: New Art Scene" is Ugo Mulas' oversized, beautifully designed and printed homage to Manhattan's exploding art world of the mid-sixties. With a text by the Jewish Museum's forward thinking curator Alan Solomon running throughout, it includes unparalleled photographic documentation of the burgeoning Pop Art scene as well as in-depth studio visits by the distinguished Italian lensman with Lee Bontecou, John Chamberlain, Jim Dine, Marcel Duchamp, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Barnett Newman, Kenneth Noland, Claes Oldenburg, Larry Poons, Robert Rauschenberg, James Rosenquist, George Segal, Frank Stella, Andy Warhol, and Tom Wesselmann. A bright, most handsome example with unbroken hinges and a sturdy binding of this highly sought-after item (cited on pages 230-231 of The Hasselblad Center's "The Open Book" and pages 186-187 of "The Book of 101 Books") bearing a non-authorial gift inscription in ink on the front free endpaper in the publisher's fragile, price-clipped dust jacket. that shows some wear, creasing, age-toning, and some pare loss to the spine. All in all, this is a much sharper copy in hand than it describes that has been priced accordingly.         Andy Warhol's Index Book

New York: Random House, 1967. Hardcover. Near Fine. A handsome copy of the 1967 stated 1st printing of this seminal artist's book, cited by both Andrew Roth and Martin Parr as among the most influential photo/artists' books of the century. This copy boasts a very bright front cover (with crisp, completely unflecked silver lettering along the spine) and is missing only 1 of its 10 original multiples/objects. Included are: the castle pop-up; the red accordion (which still squeaks somewhat); the bi-plane pop-up; "The Chelsea Girls" paper wheel (attached); the Velvet Underground/Lou Reed record (attached); the double-image rainbow nose; the Hunt's Tomato Paste pop-up; the rectanguale tear-offs (missing only 1 of the 8); and the balloon (inevitably smushed down, as in virtually every copy). The only missing piece is: the 12-sided "sphere", even though the original string to which is was attached is still present. Respectable and very solid, and in the much less common hardback. Tight and VG+, with very light soiling to the rear panel. (From the title page: "with the assistance of Stephen Shore, Paul Morrissey, Ondine, Nico -- several photographs by Nat Finkelstein, Factory Fotos by Billy Name").

Master i Margarita. 2nd book edition with samizdat inserts.

Oktav. 500 pp. Original publishers red cloth binding. The binding slighty stained and without the dustjacket, otherwise fine. First published in the magzine MOSKVA in 1967/68. One of the mainworks of Russian literature, here the scarce second but enlarged Russian edition. Also scarce in this condition, first published in these two magazines, 26 years later after his death. The first book-version was published in Paris in 1967 at YMCA pres. This edition by Posev with a more complete text using samizdat inserts in italic / cursive. The first complete edition was published in 1987.A censored version, with about 12 percent of the text removed and still more changed, was first published in Moscow magazine (no. 11, 1966 and no. 1, 1967).[5] The YMCA Press in Paris, best celebrated for publishing the work of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, published the first book edition.[6] The text of all the omitted and changed parts, with indications of the places of modification, was printed and distributed by hand (in a dissident practice known as samizdat). In 1969, the publisher Posev (Frankfurt) printed a version produced with the aid of these inserts.

The journals of Captain James Cook on his voyages of discovery. [I. The voyage of the Endeavour, 1768-1771; II. The voyage of the Resolution and Discovery, 1776-1780; III. pt 1-2. The voyage of the Resolution and Discovery , 1776-1780; IV. The life of Captain James Cook].

Cambridge Hakluyt Society C.U.P. 1968 19691974 1967 - 4 volumes in 5, royal 8vo, 1 volume portfolio atlas, with 2 addenda and corigenda booklets, numerous maps and illustrations throughout, original blue cloth gilt, light soiling and chipping to wrappers, an excellent set. Hakluyt Society extra series 34a, 34b, 35, 36a, 36b, 37. This publication represents the first time that Cook's journals were comprehensively and accurately presented to the public, and to do so required enormous research since copies and fragments of the journals and related material were scattered in various archives in London, Australia and New Zealand. For his edition, Beaglehole sought out the various surviving holographs in Cook's own hand in preference to copies by his clerks on board ship, and others. As well as Cook's own journals Beaglehole also printed, either entire or in lengthy extracts, the journals of several of Cook's colleagues on the voyages. The introductions themselves, together with copious footnotes, reveal the breadth of his erudition. They cover many topics, ranging from the structure of Polynesian society to oceanography, navigation, cartography, and much else. Hill 86 (Life) & 367. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Peter O'Toole, Katharine Hepburn, Anthony Hopkins, and Timothy Dalton on the set of "The Lion in Winter" (1967)

N.p.: N.p., 1967. Vintage oversize double weight photograph of Peter O'Toole, Katharine Hepburn, Anthony Hopkins, and Timothy Dalton hosting a feast in a scene from "The Lion in Winter". Shot, struck, and mounted by the film's still photographer, Bob Willoughby. The photographer has written at the top of the verso, in holograph pencil: "B.W.-16." Also with Willoughby's ASMP rubber stamp showing his New York address, a reference number, and a 1967 copyright date. Full provenance available. Winner of three Academy Awards, including Best Screenplay, and nominated for four others, including Best Picture, Best Actor (O'Toole), and Best Director. Shot on location in France, Ireland, and Wales. After studying with Saul Bass at the Kann Institute of Art in Los Angeles, Willoughby began working as a photographer for magazines such as "Life," "Look," and "Harper's Bazaar" in the late 1940s. It was while on assignment covering Judy Garland in a "A Star is Born" that Willoughby's ability to capture his subjects' spontaneity, humor, and vulnerability, resulting in images that were far different from more traditional film stills, came to Hollywood's attention and earned him his first "Life" magazine cover. Willoughby spent the next 20-plus years working as a set photographer for every major studio, documenting some of most important films of the era and creating intimate portraits of some of Hollywood's greatest celebrities. Technically and stylistically innovative, Willoughby built the first remote radio-controlled cameras used on film sets, pioneered the use of the "silent blimp" for 35mm cameras, and created brackets to mount his cameras directly over the movie cameras to capture the same images. Willoughby moved his family to County Cork, Ireland in 1972, working on only a handful of films through the late 1970s and early 1980s, though he would continue to photograph, exhibit, and publish books for the remainder of his life. The stills in this collection were given by Willoughby to friends in Kilbrittain, Ireland just prior to his move to Vence, France in 1989, where he would remain until his death in 2009. Perhaps more than any other photographer, Willoughby is responsible for creating the the look of mid-century celebrity and moviemaking in the popular imagination, with his images printed in magazines literally every week of his career. But beyond being prolific, Willoughby's legacy rests with his ability capture the essence of the actors he photographed, as well as the films with which those photographs were associated. As Sydney Pollack said in his introduction to Willoughby's autobiography, "Sometimes a filmmaker gets a look at a photograph taken on his own set and sees the 'soul' of his film in one still photograph. It's rare, but it happens. It happened to me in 1969, the first time I looked at the work of Bob Willoughby during the filming of "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" Willoughby's photographs are in the permanent collections of ten museums, including The National Portrait Galleries in Washington, DC and London, the Bibliotheque Nationale de France, The Museum of Modern Art, and The Tate Modern. 14 x 9 inches (36 x 23 cm). Near Fine.
