Atlas Shrugged 10th Anniversary Signed #d Limited Edition in slipcase, #41 of 2,000 copies

New York: Random House([1967] 1957). SIGNED by the author, #41 of 2000 copies, this is the 9th printing of Atlas Shrugged. Copyright is 1957 though this printing was retained by Random House and released in 1967 as a 10th anniversary signed numbered limited edition in slipcase, with a limitation page signed by Ms. Rand. Bound in blue cloth with blue upper page edge stain, the author's initials in gold on the front panel and, on the spine, the author's name and the book title in gold on a navy and gold background and the publisher's name in gold at the bottom. Fine book, close to 'as new' condition, that is straight, clean and tightly bound (probably unread) with no soiling or wear to the binding cloth, text or page edges and no rubbing of the gold areas or spine decoration. There is a very short previous owner gift inscription (father to daughter) on the dedication page, and slight sunning of the upper page edge stain near the spine. The clear acetate dustjacket is also in Fine condition with no tears, chips or folds (you're seeing it on the book in our images). As usual, the blue-green paper-covered boards of the slipcase - though the case is intact and as strong as new - show sunning of the paper color. About 1/3 of the slipcase, where sunlight reached it, is now more olive-colored than blue-green. It also has a few very small nicks to the paper surface around the case opening. We're grading the slipcase as VG+ because of that sunning to part of the case's paper surface with, as above, the book and clear dustjacket both Fine. ; 8-5/8" x 6"; 1,168 pages; Signed by Author, 10, 20, 14, F/F

Typed letter signed, to John McClure of Columbia Records

      - November 11, 1967, Hollywood, one page 4to on Stravinsky's imprinted stationery: "This letter is a pledge to help discharge Mr.Robert Craft's $10,903.44 debt to CBS. As both Mr. Craft and CBS (apparently) are in precarious financial circumstances I herewith request and authorize the attachment and application of my own royalties." He concludes with a dig at the "richly ungrammatical note" from CBS's law firm. Signed in full. Fine condition. The works of Stravinsky (1882-1971), spanning from the romantic into the modern era, revolutionized twentieth-century music. While The Firebird, his first commission for Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, reflects the rich orchestral coloring of Rimsky-Korsakov, his dissonant third ballet The Rite of Spring caused a critical riot in 1913 Paris and still sounds barbarous today. Stravinsky met the young American conductor Robert Craft in 1948; Craft gradually became his Boswell and was instrumental in persuading the composer to adopt the twelve-tone scale.         Perceptrons and Pattern Recognition. Artificial Intelligence Memo no. 140. MAC-M-358. Project MAC.

September 1967, Cambridge, MA - First edition, extremely rare pre-publication issue, of this important early work in Artificial Intelligence (AI), containing the first systematic study of parallelism in computation. It was first published in book form in 1969 as Perceptrons. An Introduction to Computational Geometry (second edition 1987). It ?has remained a classical work on threshold automata networks for nearly two decades. It marked a historical turn in artificial intelligence, and it is required reading for anyone who wants to understand the connectionist counterrevolution that is going on today. Artificial-intelligence research, which for a time concentrated on the programming of Von Neumann computers, is swinging back to the idea that intelligence might emerge from the activity of networks of neuron-like entities. Minsky and Papert?s book was the first example of a mathematical analysis carried far enough to show the exact limitations of a class of computing machines that could seriously be considered as models of the brain. Now the new developments in mathematical tools, the recent interest of physicists in the theory of disordered matter, the new insights into and psychological models of how the brain works, and the evolution of fast computers that can simulate networks of automata have given Perceptrons new importance? (from the introduction to the second book edition). This pre-publication issue is extremely rare and seems to be little known. Most discussions of Minsky & Papert?s work refer only to the 1969 book edition. OCLC lists only two copies (Stanford and National Research Council Canada). There appears to be no copy at MIT, where the research was carried out and where this work was published. No copies in auction records. Some of the earliest work in AI used networks or circuits of connected units to simulate intelligent behaviour. Examples of this kind of work, called ?connectionism?, include Walter Pitts and Warren McCullough?s first description of a neural network for logic and Minsky?s work on the SNARC system. In the late 1950s, most of these approaches were abandoned when researchers began to explore symbolic reasoning as the essence of intelligence. However, one type of connectionist work continued: the study of perceptrons, invented by Frank Rosenblatt (1928-71) in 1958, who kept the field alive with his salesmanship and the sheer force of his personality. The perceptron was a simple neural network, namely, an algorithm which allows for learning the process of deciding whether an input belongs to some given class or not (?binary classifier?). Rosenblatt optimistically predicted that the perceptron ?may eventually be able to learn, make decisions, and translate languages? He had been a schoolmate of Minsky at the Bronx High School of Science. Minsky had toyed with neural networks, in fact his PhD dissertation concerned them, but he had dismissed their worth at that time. Thus the claims made by Rosenblatt purporting to demonstrate the learning powers of the perceptron were viewed right from the start with skepticism by Minsky. An active research program into perceptrons was carried out throughout the 1960s but came to a sudden halt with the publication of Minsky and Papert?s book Perceptrons. It suggested that there were severe limitations to what perceptrons could do and that Frank Rosenblatt?s predictions had been grossly exaggerated. While the book highlights some of perceptrons' strengths, it also shows some previously unknown limitations. The most important of these is related to the computation of some predicates, such as the XOR function (which outputs ?true? when exactly one of two inputs is true), and also the important connectedness predicate (to tell whether an input pattern is connected, i.e., forms ?one piece?, or not). The effect of the book was devastating: virtually no research at all was done in connectionism for 10 years. Major funding for connectionist projects was difficult to find in the 1970s and early 1980s. The ?w

Heights (Columbia University Student Newspaper) : September 1967 -- Vol. 1, No. 1

Postcrypt Press (Earl Hall, Columbia University), New York 1967 - The uncommon Sept. 1967 maiden issue of this short-lived student weekly, issued firmly in the spirit of time (1967) and place (Columbia). Suffused with a radical energy and a palpable distrust of the school's administration, the paper foreshadows the showdown-to-come, which would of course shut down the campus a little over half a year later and generate world headlines in the process. This copy has held up nicely: Clean and VG+, with a thin, even horizontal crease halving the paper and with one very small closed tear along the front panel's upper-edge. 15" tall, 12 pgs. In a nod to the Beat movement (which Columbia's campus gave birth to), the rear page is a lavish reprint of part of Lawrence Ferlinghetti's "Coney Island of the Mind" [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Collection of approximately 150 leaves of event scores from happenings, compositions, and performances pertaining to the avant-garde movement, primarily from artists affiliated with the Fluxus and zaj movements, for a planned anthology proposed by Wolf Vostell to be edited by Bernhard Hoke, editor of Edition Et, the manuscripts translated into German by Tomas Schmit, from both published and unpublished original copies, the translations themselves unpublished. Not illustrated. 4to. Typed text on thin paper, sheets loose as issued. N.p., n.d. (circa 1967). This intended anthology never came to fruition, but was meant to illustrate the diversity of art forms including theater, happenings, performance art, and musical composition. The concept of event scores was first invented by George Brecht and featured in many Fluxus works, taking the shape of simple scripted instructions to guide the actions of the happening or performance. Many important avant-garde and Fluxus artists are included in this collection, some represented by well-documented performances or happenings, some by unpublished pieces. The compilation comprises the works of: Eric Andersen (Opus 1-49); Ben Vautier (Fluxfest Sale); Henry Flynt (Mock Risk Games - a Psychological Examination); Ken Friedman (International Chain Happening); Andre Heller (Design of an Intimate Opera in a Large Procession with Recorded Pauses); Jean-Paul Jacobs (General Schedule with Special Consideration of Planet Earth); Allan Kaprow (Self-Service; Soap); Takehisa Kosugi (SOUTH 4); Alison Knowles (COMMUNITAS NO.1; STREET); Ferdinand Kriwet (Text Theater. Piece for Language, Facial Expression, Gesture, & Movement); Gyorgy Ligeti (Poeme Symphonique for 100 Metronomes); Franz Mon (Notes from an Automobile Theater); Otto Muehl (Psycho-hygiene; Action for Law Enforcement Officers; Walk Your Dog; Piano Concerto); Hermann Nitsch (Action - Happening); Dieter Roth (301 Small Clouds); Gerhard Ruhm (Gift and Reproduction; Counter-States; Hands; Go; Laughter; Parade; Doors); S.D. Sauerbiert (Word and Fire Fight); Chieko Shiomi (Wagtail and Eraser; Theatrical Poem; Temperature Experiment); Jean Toche (Spiesehappening (x+1) Exercise in Sensory Deprivation); Wolf Vostell (Notes for De-coll/age Happenings); Emmett Wiliams (Proposal for a Poetic Commemoration for the Widow of the Unknown Soldier); and Zaj (texts by Juan Hidalgo and Jose Luis Castillejo). An impressive and important collection of texts for documenting and studying the avant-garde art movement of the 1960's.
