12 Photographs from the New Year's Wail / New Year's Whale Concert, with additional related photographs

[San Francisco]. 1967. A collection of snapshots taken at the New Year's Wail concert on January 1, 1967 at the Panhandle near Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, with some accompanying images. Various sizes. Condition is overall good with tape remnants or shadows mostly in the margins, but the images mostly pretty clear. Several are captioned. The show, entitled "The New Year's Wail / New Year's Whale" was organized by the Hells Angels as a thank you, and a celebration of the Haight Ashbury community for "crowdfunding" the bail money for their member Chocolate George after a traffic arrest. The Diggers helped to promote the event which featured Big Brother and The Grateful Dead (as well as of Orkustra with Bobby Beausoleil, later of the Manson Family). The bands played on a flatbed truck, and the photographer was clearly very close to the bands, probably on the truck itself. Of the dozen candid photographs of the concert, all but one (the only color image, of some Hells Angels and their bikes in the crowd) feature the bands: Joplin appears in at least eight of them, and Jerry Garcia in three, with other shots of other band members in various combinations. Also accompanied by several other images: two color images of Joplin singing, date stamped in May 1967, have damage to the margins, although the images of Joplin are largely clear. Also with a color photo of a psychedelically-decorated hippie crash pad, as well as another 14 images of several young men, presumably the photographer and his friends: one with a motorcycle, several in military garb sitting on a dock smoking pot, one on a ship's deck, and several overseas in Thailand and the Phillipines. .

        The Master and Margarita

London, Collins, Harvill. 1967, 1967. Dark fantasy. First Glenny translation (ie the complete text), considered to be better than the preceding Ginsburg translation.Octavo, pp.445. Publisher's green cloth titled in gilt. Striking pictorial jacket by Alex Jawdokimov. No inscriptions or price-clipping. A few light mrks but essentially a crisp, fine copy. One of the greatest novels of the Twentieth century; the Devil comes to Moscow accompanied by an irresistably beautiful vampire maid, a fanged henchman or two and a bipedal gun toting black cat by the name of Behemoth...much hilarity ensues. A must for anyone with even a shred of sympathy for the devil. Listed in BBC's Big Read (200 Best Novels) [2003], also in The Times' NovelList 60 Greatest Books Poll [2013]

Persian Gulf Pilot. N.P. No. 63. Comprising the Persian Gulf and it s Approaches from Ra's al Hadd, in the South-west to Ras Muari in the East.

London: published by the Hydrographer of the Navy, 1967 - Octavo. Original blue cloth, title in yellow to spine and to the upper board. Spine very slightly sunned, light wear at the extremities, a very good copy indeed. Folding general map frontispiece and 13 other full-page maps, 21 plates of coastal profiles. First published 1870, this eleventh edition following the tenth of 1955. All editions of these highly-detailed navigational handbooks to the Gulf tend to be uncommon. Beyond the specifically maritime aspects these handbooks did provide some basic background on local conditions, climate, items of trade, and so forth. An interesting record of a time at which "extensive new building development" was beginning to "change the appearance of some of the towns, notably Abu Zabi and Dubayy". "The picturesque town of Muscat, is protected on its eastern and part of its southern side, ands the western side by precipitous hills, the remainder of the southern side, and the western side is protected by a wall. Outside the wall, and between it and the rugged hills encircling the town, every available space is occupied by may huts"; "The coast between Dubayy and Abu Zabi is except for a small village, at which there are some date trees, situated about 4 miles south-westward of Dubayy, quite barren, uninhabited ": "The town of Abu Zabi extends for about 2 miles, and consists, in the main part, of concrete buildings with a number of huts at the south-west end". Macro 290 for the 1924 7th edition.

New American Review (issues 1-15) / American Review: The Magazine of New Writing (issues 16-26) [complete set, plus extra volumes]

New American Library / Simon and Schuster / Bantam Books 1967-1977, New York - [graded Near Fine as a set; all books are tight and unread, and about as nice a group as one could hope to assemble despite a few minor depredations (occasional light wear, some age-toning to the page edges of a few volumes); all were acquired directly from a long-time editorial staff member of the publication, who had kept them untouched in storage since the time of their original issue]. "Was New American Review the Best Literary Magazine Ever?" This was the question posed (and the case persuasively argued) in a 2008 Slate article by Gerald Howard. Offered here is an opportunity to investigate and draw your own conclusions: this is a full set (26 volumes) of the original publication, plus two additional volumes. (See below.) Founded in 1967, New American Review passed through three publishers in its ten-year history. The first ten issues (under the New American Library imprint) were issued in pictorial hardcovers as well as mass-market paperback format, and are present here in the hardcover issues; in addition, issue #1 appeared as a full-size trade hardcover, with dust jacket, which is the first of the two extra volumes included in this set. The five issues (#11-#15) put out by Simon and Schuster in 1971 and 1972 were small-format trade softcovers (about half an inch taller than standard mass-market paperbacks), and the remainder of the run, issued by Bantam, were standard mass-market paperbacks. (The second "bonus" volume included here is "Many Windows: 22 Stories from American Review," a Harper Colophon trade paperback published in 1982.) This set was acquired directly from a long-time editorial staff member of NAR, who had kept them untouched in storage since the time of their original publication. The overall grade of the set is Near Fine; all volumes are tight and appear unread, and despite a few minor depredations (occasional light wear, some age-toning to the page edges of a few volumes) constitute about as nice a collection of this landmark publication as one could hope to assemble. New York, The Museum of Modern Art, 1967.. 22x22 cm. 19 n.n. Bl., gedruckt auf verschiedenen Papier, mit ausgestanzten Blättern und einem roten Faden durch die ausgestanzten Blätter. Schwarze OBr. mit rotem OU.. No. 1731 von 2000 numerierten Exemplaren. - Schutzumschlag mit Klappentext in Italienisch und Englisch: "This is a unique book designed by Bruni Munari especially for The Museum of Moder Art. It is one of a group of book in which a visual discourse, rather than a text composed of words, carries the thread of the story. The "unreadable" book was first conceived by Munari in 1949, and exhibited the same year at the Salto Bookship in Milan. A small number of copies were handmade by the author. A Presentation Edition of 2000 copies of one unreadable book, with red-and-white cut pages, edited by Peter Brattinga for the Quadrat Blätter series, was published in 1953 by Steendrukkerij de Jong & Company. In 1955 several unreadable books were shown along with other works by Munari in the exhibition "Two Graphic Designers" at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In 1957 they were awarded a Gold Medal at the Triennale di Milano. Nine volumes are now in the Design Collection of Modern Art."

CIEN AÑOS DE SOLEDAD (ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF SOLITUDE)

Buenos Aires: Editorial Sudamericana, 1967. First Edition in Spanish. Octavo; illustrated wrappers; 351pp, [1]. Minor wear along the edge of the front joint, with minute paper loss to corners on both ends. A bit of the usual toning and creasing to the spine panel, diagonal crease on the lower left corner of the rear wrapper, with a small, faint dampstain at the base of the rear joint. Spine leans just a few degrees, with '29' written faintly at mid-spine, and a very faint circular stain at the center of the front panel (largely obscured by the cover art). Previous owner's name on the half-title page, and even with the stated flaws, still an exemplary copy of a fragile, cheaply made volume; Very Good+. The Nobel Prize winner's masterpiece, a highspot of Latin American literature, and likely the most widely-read Spanish language novel aside from 'Don Quixote.' The book had a first printing of 8,000 copies, which first appeared in Buenos Aires bookstores on June 6th, 1967; it took exactly two weeks for them to be sold out. Three more printings were done in 1967 (June, September, and December), each of them approximately 20,000 copies. The first printing is the only state of the book with the cover art featuring the ship and three yellow flowers, a design García Márquez reportedly hated; an alternate design created by a friend graced the cover of later printings. The present edition was published three years prior to the American edition, and quite rare in comparison; relatively few copies have found their way into the trade outside of the continent, and those that have are typically very badly worn.         Persian Gulf Pilot. N.P. No. 63

London: published by the Hydrographer of the Navy,, 1967. Comprising the Persian Gulf and it s Approaches from Ra's al Hadd, in the South-west to Ras Muari in the East. Octavo. Original blue cloth, title in yellow to spine and to the upper board. Folding general map frontispiece and 13 other full-page maps, 21 plates of coastal profiles. Spine very slightly sunned, light wear at the extremities, a very good copy indeed. Outside the wall, and between it and the rugged hills encircling the town, every available space is occupied by may huts"; "The coast between Dubayy and Abu Zabi … is except for a small village, at which there are some date trees, situated about 4 miles south-westward of Dubayy, quite barren, uninhabited …": "The town of Abu Zabi … extends for about 2 miles, and consists, in the main part, of concrete buildings with a number of huts at the south-west end".

Abbey Theatre Window Card for:] BORSTAL BOY.

[Dublin]: Abbey Theatre, 1967. - Folio (23 x 18") stiff board window card, laid down on art board, printed on recto only. Some visible old creases and closed tears remedied by the mounting, otherwise very good and bright. An original window card for the premiere run at the Abbey Theatre of Frank McMahon's adaptation to the stage of Brendan Behan's 1958 autobiographical novel. The design incorporates gray-scale portraits of Behan and a collage of newspaper clippings, with a starkly modernist inset in bright colors, featuring an abstract rendition of a head in profile filled with abstract details. The poster is signed and dated in the plate a few weeks prior to the production ("13-9- '67"), with the poster artist's signature not completely legible but appearing to be "N. Lane." The production opened on 10 October 1967, with Frank Grimes as the young Behan, and ran for eleven weeks. Upon its wider release, McMahon won a New York Drama Critics' Circle Award and Tony Award in 1970 for his adaptation. A very, very uncommon and visually striking poster.
