A COLLECTION OF EIGHTEEN LETTERS AND CARDS FROM VERA BRITTAIN TO DOROTHY PERKIN COVERING THE PERIOD 1940 TO 1967

1940 to 1967 - Vera Brittain (1893-1970) was an influential British author, public speaker, and pacifist. She published several novels and three autobiographical books, the most important of which was "Testament of Youth" (published in 1935 and recently adapted for, and released as, a movie). Her intimate friendship with the English novelist and poet Winifred Holtby resulted in several books of their letters. We recently acquired, from the estate of a long-time acquaintance and correspondent of Ms. Brittain, a series of letters and hand-written cards. In format, they are either typed letter signed (TLS), or autographed (i.e., hand-written) letter signed [ALS]), or hand-written cards. They are all addressed to Dorothy Perkin and discuss many matters: some mundane (i.e., acknowledging correpsondence), or profound (e.g. TLS dated February 22, 1960, telling Ms. Perkins of her upcoming trip to Africa in response to an invitation from the University of Natal "to take part, as the main woman lecturer, in a conference they are holding in July to celebrate the Union of South Africa's Jubilee." She continues: "It will be a wonderful opportunity to see things for myself and perhaps to try and emulate Harold Macmillan by making clear our attitude towards racial questions without offending my hosts. In this case, they can be subtly discussed in terms of the women who have gained their freedom, but were once in subjection". None of this material has previously been offered for sale, as it only recently came into our hands, from the estate. Further details upon request. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        WODWO.

Faber & Faber (1967)., London: - First edition. Prize-winning poet Anthony Hecht's copy with his ownership signature on the front endpaper. A PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED by Hughes, "To Tony/ in Memoriam/ from Ted/ 13 July 1967." This was Hughes first book of poems after wife Sylvia Plath's death from suicide in 1963 -- we assume the "in Memoriam" is for her, as she and Hecht were very close friends, which is clearly indicated by her intimate letters to him. Plath and Hecht met while both were teaching at Smith College (1956-1962), where Hughes also taught. After Plath's death, Hughes and Hecht continued to be friends and each man went on to win numerous awards and to become the Poet Laureate of their country. Ted Hughes was known to greatly admired Hecht, calling him "one of the most accomplished of his extremely accomplished generation." The book is crisp and fine with only very minor wear; in a near fine, lightly age-toned dust jacket with slightly darkened spine and a few tiny nicks. An early, important association copy between two poets who went on to become highly esteemed in each other's countries as well as their own. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Persian Gulf Pilot. N.P. No. 63.

London: published by the Hydrographer of the Navy,, 1967, & 1974. Comprising the Persian Gulf and it s Approaches from Ra's al Hadd, in the South-west to Ras Muari in the East. [Together with;] Supplement No.5 -1974 to Persian Gulf Pilot (Eleventh Edition, 1967). Corrected to 7th December, 1974. Octavo. Original blue cloth, title in yellow to spine and to the upper board; supplement wire-stitched in the original printed paper upper wrap, and plain cardboard lower. Folding general map frontispiece and 13 other full-page maps, 21 plates of coastal profiles. Folding frontispiece to the supplement. Slightly sunned at the spine and board edges, lightly rubbed, endpapers a touch browned, upper wrap of the supplement just toned at the fore-edge. First published 1870, this eleventh edition following the tenth of 1955. This copy with a supplement updating the volume to 1974, a new edition was not issued until 1982. All editions of these highly-detailed navigational handbooks to the Gulf tend to be uncommon. Beyond the specifically maritime aspects these handbooks did provide some basic background on local conditions, climate, items of trade, and so forth. An interesting record of a time at which "extensive new building development" was beginning to "change the appearance of some of the towns, notably Abu Zabi and Dubayy". "The picturesque town of Muscat, is protected on its eastern and part of its southern side, ands the western side by precipitous hills, the remainder of the southern side, and the western side is protected by a wall. Outside the wall, and between it and the rugged hills encircling the town, every available space is occupied by may huts"; "The coast between Dubayy and Abu Zabi … is except for a small village, at which there are some date trees, situated about 4 miles south-westward of Dubayy, quite barren, uninhabited …": "The town of Abu Zabi … extends for about 2 miles, and consists, in the main part, of concrete buildings with a number of huts at the south-west end".

Human heart Transplantation / Hartoorplanting in de mens: "South African Medical Journal, Vol. 41: no. 48, 30 December 1967. [Containing, among other writings: A Human Cardiac Transplant: An Interim Report of a Successful Operation Performed at Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town].

(Cape Town, 1967). 4to. The entire issue, in the original green/white and illustrated wrappers. Lower corner a bit bent, but otherwise a very nice, clean and bright copy of this richly illustreted issue, which is devoted entirely to the groundbreaking medical performance that was Barnard's human heart transplant. LX pp. + pp. 1257-1278 (the pagination includes the wrappers).. First printing in this scarce issue, in which Barnard's milestone paper of modern medicine appeared, describing for the first time one of the most important medical performances in the course of history - "the most publicised event in world medical history", namely the first human heart transplant. This medical breakthrough introduced to the world a way to prolong life that would become of seminal importance to modern man.The entire issue of the "South African Medical Journal" is devoted to Barnard's astonishing performance (done only three weeks prior to the publication) and is very interesting in itself, constituting a magnificent historical document. Apart from the first appearance of Barnard's paper, it also contains tributes to Barnard and his team by other leading physicians, ethical discussions about tranplantations, a description of the honourary degree bestowed upon Barnard due to the operation, discussions about donors for heart transplantations, papers on legal requirements, pre-operative assessment, tissue typing tests anestesia, and, of course, the great operation itself. To that also comes the highly interesting "Provisional Report on the Autopsy of L.W. (the patient, Louis Washkansky) as well as numerous advertisements and several heartfelt congratulations to Barnard (and his team) upon the operation (e.g. a half-page "add" saying "UPJOHN and their S. African Subsidiary/ TUCO (PTY LTD./ heartily congratulate/ all concerned/ in the historic/ HEART TRANSPLANTATION/ carried out at Groote Schuur Hospital" and many others like it), reflecting the astonishing effect that this historic event immidiately had upon contemporary society. "Christiaan (Chris) Barnard was born in 1922 and qualified in medicine at the University of Cape Town in 1946. Following surgical training in South Africa and the USA, Barnard established a successful open-heart surgery programme at Groote Schuur Hospital and the University of Cape Town in 1958. In 1967, he led the team that performed the world's first human-to-human heart transplant. The article describing this remarkable achievement was published in the South African Medical Journal just three weeks after the event and is one of the most cited articles in the cardiovascular field. In the lay media as well, this first transplant remains the most publicised event in world medical history. Although the first heart transplant patient survived only 18 days, four of Groote Schuur Hospital's first 10 patients survived for more than one year, two living for 13 and 23 years, respectively. This relative success amid many failures worldwide did much to generate guarded optimism that heart transplantation would eventually become a viable therapeutic option. This first heart transplant and subsequent ongoing research in cardiac transplantation at the University of Cape Town and in a few other dedicated centres over the subsequent 15 years laid the foundation for heart transplantation to become a well-established form of therapy for end-stage cardiac disease. During this period from 1968 to 1983, Chris Barnard and his team continued to make major contributions to organ transplantation, notably the development of the heterotopic ( 'piggy-back') heart transplants; advancing the concept of brain death, organ donation and other related ethical issues; better preservation and protection of the donor heart (including hypothermic perfusion storage of the heart; studies on the haemodynamic and metabolic effects of brain death; and even early attempts at xenotransplantation." (Cardiovasc J Afr. 2009 Jan-Feb; 20(1):31-5.)Garrison&Morton: 3047.12 ("First cardiac homotransplant in man.")

      - FIRST EDITIONS IN ORIGINAL WRAPS OF MILGRAM'S TWO LANDMARK 'SMALL-WORLD PROBLEM' PAPERS & A COLLECTION OF SEVEN MORE SEMINAL PAPERS ON THE SMALL-WORLD PROBLEM - also known as six degrees of separation. "In 1967, social psychologist Stanley Milgram conducted a seminal experiment to test the hypothesis that scattered members of any large social network (here, the United States) could be connected to each other through short chains of intermediate acquaintances" (Levinson, Village, I, 1255). Milgram put it this way: "The simplest way of formulating the small-world problem is: Starting with any two people in the world, what is the probability that they know each other?" (Milgram, 62). To find out, he "mailed a passport-like packet to a few hundred randomly selected individuals in Nebraska and Kansas, explaining that the packet's final destination was one of two target recipients in the Boston area. Milgram instructed his subjects to send the packet? to someone whom they knew on a first-name basis - someone they thought was more likely to be acquainted with the target person than they were themselves? "His famous result, now enshrined in popular culture and sociology dogma, was that the average length of the resulting acquaintance chains was roughly six links, where the final member of the chain was the target itself. This result led to the phrase 'six degrees of separation'", [though Milgram never used it] and later Guare's play of the same name (Levinson). Two Granovetter papers build on Milgram and are among the most important in the social sciences. His 'Strength of Weak Ties' are pioneering, highly influential papers arguing that "In marketing, information science, or politics, weak ties enable reaching populations and audiences that are not accessible via strong ties" (Wikipedia). Granovetter concludes "that no strong tie is a bridge, and therefore "all bridges are weak ties" (Granovetter, 1363). Weak ties, he argues, "are more likely to link members of different groups in networks than strong ones. Weak ties connect different actors and consequently enable the flow of information" (Trost, Social Media, 17). Kochenand de Sola Pool formally and famously articulate "the mechanics ofsocial networks and explore the mathematical consequences of these (including connectedness)" (Wikipedia). Their work "provided the intellectual impetus for a whole generation of students who designed and executed studies of the 'small-world'." In 1998 Watts and Strogatz seminally document the best known family of small-world networks and posit the network model as a framework to study the small-world problem. Their work "provided compelling evidence that the small-world phenomenon is pervasive in a range of networks arising in nature and technology, and a fundamental ingredient in the evolution of the WWW" (Kleinberg, 1). Brabási and Réka introduce an algorithm used to generate random, scale-free networks. Scale-free networks are often observed in natural as well as human created systems, including cellular networks, the WWW, Internet, and social networks. Kleinberg's 2000 paper rigorously quantifies the small-world network . Kleinberg first recognized that Milgram's small-world implicitly argues not only the presence of short paths between "individuals in social networks, but also that people seem to be good at finding those paths, an apparently simple observation that turns out to have profound implications for the structure of the networks" (Wikipedia). Lastly, the play Six Degrees of Separation is included for a bit of fun. DETAILS: All papers housed in individually-sized compartments in a handsome leather and cloth clamshell case. Kleinberg's paper is a bound extraction; Granovetter's second paper is bound and includes dust cover; Strogatz's paper is inscribed. All others are journal issues in original wraps. Mailing labels appear on most; a few are ex-libris; withal, the collection is in fine condition.

Thirtyfour Parking Lots in Los Angeles

Edward Ruscha, Los Angeles 1967 - FIRST EDITION, SIGNED BY RUSCHA in ink on front free endpaper: "Ed Ruscha '82". With 31 black and white photographs of the 34 parking lots. "In Thirtyfour Parking Lots in Los Angeles photographs of empty parking lots, each with a caption indicating location, are distributed one or two to each double-page spread in a book 10 by 8 1/8 inches. Ruscha's choice of aerial photography demonstrates his awareness of how the print media began to show the changing Los Angeles landscape: bird's-eye views of Los Angeles enjoyed increasing popularity during the 1960s, owing in part to the new prominence of helicopters. Typically aerial photographs depicted the city's freeways and suburban developments, evoking, depending on one's perspective, the appalling or breathtaking magnitude of L.A.'s sprawl. Photographs in newspapers of massive parking lots and garages always included plenty of cars, conveying both the size of the population and the practical means of coping with geographic distances. Thirtyfour Parking Lots in Los Angeles asks viewers to consider not the functional role of the parking lots but their abstract patterns, their regular grids of white paint on concrete randomly splattered with oil. The oil spots disrupt the functional order of the parking lot just as the aberrant cars parked along the Sunset strip break the uniformity of urban space. These dissonant signs, produced either by chance or by the artist's design, resist the imposition of rationality on the urban landscape" (Cecile Whiting, Pop L.A.: Art and the City in the 1960s). Los Angeles: Edward Ruscha, 1967. Quarto (205 mm x 255 mm), original printed paper wrappers. 48 pp, 31 black-and-white photographs. Without the scarce glassine. Wrappers with a little toning around edges (as often). A near-fine copy; rare signed. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Palingenesia Iuris Civilis. Iuris Consultorum reliquiae quae Iustiniani digestis continentur ceteraque Iuris Prudentiae Civilis fragmenta minora secundum Auctores et libros disposuit Otto Lenel.

Leipzig, Bernhard Tauchnitz, 1889. 2 Bde. 4to. (I:) Tb., 3 Bll., Titelblatt, 1308 Spalten; (II:) Tb., 1264 Spalten. - NDB XIV,204f.         Hell?s Angels: A Strange and Terrible Saga of the Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs

New York: Random House, 1967. First edition of the author's first book. Octavo, original black cloth. Fine in a fine dust jacket. Boldly signed by Hunter S. Thompson on the half-title page. A superior example of this title. Thompson, the creator of Gonzo jornalism, writes with energy and brutal honesty, and with a nuanced and incisive eye, as The New Yorker stated, "For all its unihabited and sardonic humor, Thompson?'s book is a thoughtful piece of work." He captures in Hell?'s Angels a singular moment in American history, when the biker lifestyle was first defined, and when such countercultural movements were electrifying America. "He has presented us with a close view of a world most of us would never encounter. His language is brilliant, his eye remarkable" (The New York Times Book Review).

        To Seek A Newer World

New York: Doubleday & Company, Inc., 1967. First edition. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed by the author to actress Lauren Bacall on the front free endpaper, "For Lauren Bacall with best wishes Robert Kennedy." Fine in a very good dust jacket with some light rubbing. Lauren Bacall campaigned for Robert Kennedy on several occasions and were friends. Bacall a self-professed liberal said, "being a liberal is the best thing on earth you can be. You are welcoming to everyone when you're a liberal." A nice association. Published just months before his assassination, To Seek A Newer World provides the best glimpse of what might have been, had Kennedy assumed the presidency. "The sixties were a turbulent decade, and Robert Kennedy responded to that turbulence with unusual directness and sensitivity. He had evolved from the rigid prosecutor of a decade earlier into a popular leader who combined political realism with social idealism and passion with humor" (Foner & Garraty, 614).
