Faber & Faber 1966 - First edition, second impression, signed, dated and inscribed by the author to the title page: ‘Seamus Heaney, October 1966. Purchased by us from the original owner, loosely enclosed is a copy of an extract from the Doncaster Grammar School for Girls yearbook for 1966/67, which includes an account of the event (“Their inherent sincerity was reflected in their verse; they spoke with us rather than to us.”). The unclipped, first-state dustwrapper (priced 18s net, and with no reviews to the front flap) is Very Good: crisp and bright; fading to the pink by the spine and front flap fold; lightly rubbed to the spine tips and corners; a couple of tiny nicks to the foot of the front panel; dustiness to the rear panel and some smudgy ink marks by the foot of the rear panel; presented in a removable, archival-quality Brodart protective cover.         Wide Sargasso Sea

London: Andre Deutsch, 1966. First Impression of Rhys's prequel to Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre, reconstructing the life of Bertha Cosway, the madwoman of Thornfield Hall. Small 8vo: 190pp. Publisher's finely woven tangerine cloth, spine stamped in gilt; beautifully illustrated dust jacket by Eric Thomas, priced 21s. A Fine copy (tight, strong binding, probabaly unread; clean pages free from inscription; fresh, crisp jacket), barring few isolated spots of foxing to page edges. A superb copy of Rhys's brief, beautiful masterpiece. ¶ Wide Sargasso Sea tells the extended story of Rochester's visit to the West Indies to marry Cosway, a white Creole heiress. "According to a letter Rhys sent to Francis Wyndham [who wrote the book's introduction] in 1958, the previous year it had 'clicked in her head' that this material [narrative sketches under the vague title of 'Creole,' about Rhys's memories of the West Indies] could in fact be turned into a novel about 'the first Mrs. Rochester,' the shadowy West Indian character in Jane Eyre. Rhys wanted the connection with Brontë's novel, she wrote, because it was 'that particular mad Creole I want to write about.' In the same letter she proffers the title 'Wide Sargasso Sea' . . . It took eight more years of writing and rewriting, punctuated by doubts and anxiety, by the death of her husband, Max Hamer, and by two heart attacks, before Jean Rhys's final novel, Wide Sargasso Sea, widely regarded as her finest work, was published in 1966, two months after her 76th birthday." AN EXCEPTIONALLY RARE TITLE BY THE MASTER . * This illusive title has been out of print for a long time, only a couple of the volumes were reprinted, the complete work consisting of 5 volumes is rare and seldom found complete regardless of edition. . * ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT WORKS IN ENGLISH ON ZEN: This is a comprehensive set of writings on Zen, Zen arts, the Zen masters and historical background. A wonderful set of works, with English, Japanese characters & Romanized texts. . * A very well written, readable set of books. The celebrated Zen master D.T. Suzuki described Blyth as "one of the most eminent exponents of Japanese culture." . **** OTHER RELATED WRITINGS BY BLYTH ON ZEN & HAIKU: ZEN AND HAIKU: Blyth's studies on Haiku, Japanese humor and Zen are "unique contributions towards East-West understanding." Blyth lived & worked in the east 40 years, until his death in 1964. The history of Zen is the history of moments. It cannot be, like the history of ideas, or even the history of the freedom of thought, an account of development, systematization, criticism, modification, replacement and so forth. Zen seems to become deeper sometimes, shallower, broader, narrower sometimes, but there is no progress of the ordinary kind. It is a history only in the sense of being a list of names of great men in the attainment of great and so forth. Zen seems to become deeper sometimes, shallower, broader, narrower sometimes, but there is no progress of the ordinary kind. It is a history only in the sense of being a list of names of great men in the attainment of great Buddha-hood. . * BLYTH'S CONTRIBUTION: Blyth lived and worked in the East for forty years, until his death in 1964 at the age of sixty-six. From the time of his internment in Japan during World War II, Blyth wrote assiduously. In the 1950's, his "ZEN IN ENGLISH LITERATURE" and "ORIENTAL CLASSICS" and "HAIKU" reached enthusiastic readers in America and Europe. Aldous Huxley describes Blyth's work as "illuminating." As William J. Higginson writes in his "HAIKU HANDBOOK," thanks to Blyth "a new interest in Japanese Haiku began to grow among poets of the immediate post World War II generation." . Blyth's Contribution to cross-cultural understanding was manifold. In 1945, Blyth assumed a post as professor of English at Tokyo's Gakushuin University, the former Peers' School. For almost twenty years he tutored Crown Prince Akihito, the present Emperor. Blyth played a leading role in Emperor Hirohito's historical declaration of January 1, 1946, that he was a human being rather than a god. Blyth edited numerous writings from English and American literature, making them available to avid Japanese readers. . **** FIRST EDITIONS: Following is a list of the First Editions: Vol. 1: 1960; vol. 2: 1964; vol. 3: 1970; vol. 4: 1966; vol. 5: 1962; vol. 7: 1962. [vol. 5, 7 are same contents] see additional notes below. There was no volume six ever published nor issued. . *** IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT WHAT A COMPLETE SET IS: COMPLETE IN 5 VOLUMES. Blyth originally planned this work to be an 8 volume set, but due to his untimely death, it only went to 5 volumes [per dust jacket notes found on volume 2]. The back of the dust jacket on volume one [First Edition] shows the list planning on a total of 8 volumes in all. . The whole set now actually consists of 5 volumes only and is complete in that state. It contains the below list of volumes, the list is based on our primary observation of each volume in addition to the publisher's notice of the series found on the dust jackets of several volumes. . *** The set is complete with volumes 1-5, there can be an acceptable variant in the last volume which can either be numbered volume 5 or 7, contents re

        The Crying of Lot 49.

J.B. Lippincott, Philadelphia and New York 1966 - First edition of Pynchon's classic post-modern satire, which tells the wonderfully unusual story of Oedipa Maas. Octavo, original half cloth. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Herb Yellin Good Luck Thomas Pynchon." Fine in a near fine dust jacket with a small chip to the spine crown and overall light wear to the extremities. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. "The Crying of Lot 49 is a haunting sequence of imagined human situations, typical and pathetic ones, fused with the particularized power that shows Pynchon's own obsession with the encoded messages of the American landscape. What is also noticeable. is that the major character is really Pynchon himself, Pynchon's voice with its capacity to move from the elegy to the epic catalogue. The narrator sounds like a survivor looking through the massed wreckage of his civilization, 'a salad of despair.' That image, to suggest but one of the puns in the word Tristero, is typically full of sadness, terror, love, and flamboyance. But then, how else should one imagine a tryst with America? And that is what this novel is" (New York Times). [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        The Winged Man

Doubleday, New York 1966 - 190 Pp. Stated First Edition, Code H-1 On P. 190. Expanded Into A Novel By Van Vogt, From A Short Story (Officially, But Highly Unlikely) By His Wife E Mayne Hull. Trace Of Rubbing At Corners Of Book. Doubly Inscribed To A Long-Time Sf Fan, By The Authors, "For ----------- And ---------------, With My Very Best Wishes - All The Luck And Good Fortune In The World, Particularly Right Now - Van", And "I Add My Good Wishes To Van's - Affectionately, Mayne". Dj With A Little Rubbing Down Center Of Spine And At Corners, Wear With 1/2" Closed Tear At Top Of Rear Spine Fold, Tiny Loss At Bottom Of Rear Spine Fold, Not Price-Clipped, Very Slight Fading To Blue Color On Spine Panel. Van Vogt's Explanation Of Their Collaboration Was That She Had Written A Short Story, Which He Greatly Expanded; Van Vogt Later Told His Second Wife That All Of Mayne's Work Was His Own; He Pasted Labels In His Own Copies Of Their Books, To That Effect; And Said That He Wrote Under Her Name Only Because Astounding Had A Policy Of Publishing Only One Story By An Author In A Single Issue, And He Got Around That By Using Her Name For A Second Story In The Same Issue. This Is All Murky; Friends Have Indicated That Mayne Had No Interest In Sf, But It Is Not Implausible That She Would Be Writing Given Her Education, Background, And Personality. .
