        Wide Sargasso Sea

Andre Deutsch, London 1966 - First Impression of Rhys's prequel to Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre, reconstructing the life of Bertha Cosway, the madwoman of Thornfield Hall. Small 8vo: 190pp. Publisher's finely woven tangerine cloth, spine stamped in gilt; beautifully illustrated dust jacket by Eric Thomas, priced 21s. A Fine copy (tight, strong binding, probabaly unread; clean pages free from inscription; fresh, crisp jacket), barring few isolated spots of foxing to page edges. A superb copy of Rhys's brief, beautiful masterpiece. Wide Sargasso Sea tells the extended story of Rochester's visit to the West Indies to marry Cosway, a white Creole heiress. "According to a letter Rhys sent to Francis Wyndham [who wrote the book's introduction] in 1958, the previous year it had 'clicked in her head' that this material [narrative sketches under the vague title of 'Creole,' about Rhys's memories of the West Indies] could in fact be turned into a novel about 'the first Mrs. Rochester,' the shadowy West Indian character in Jane Eyre. Rhys wanted the connection with Brontë's novel, she wrote, because it was 'that particular mad Creole I want to write about.' In the same letter she proffers the title 'Wide Sargasso Sea' . . . It took eight more years of writing and rewriting, punctuated by doubts and anxiety, by the death of her husband, Max Hamer, and by two heart attacks, before Jean Rhys's final novel, Wide Sargasso Sea, widely regarded as her finest work, was published in 1966, two months after her 76th birthday." (Literary Encyclopedia) Note: With few exceptions (always noted), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves.         The Crying of Lot 49.

J.B. Lippincott, Philadelphia and New York 1966 - First edition of Pynchon's classic post-modern satire, which tells the wonderfully unusual story of Oedipa Maas. Octavo, original half cloth. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Herb Yellin Good Luck Thomas Pynchon." Fine in a near fine dust jacket with a small chip to the spine crown and overall light wear to the extremities. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. "The Crying of Lot 49 is a haunting sequence of imagined human situations, typical and pathetic ones, fused with the particularized power that shows Pynchon's own obsession with the encoded messages of the American landscape. What is also noticeable. is that the major character is really Pynchon himself, Pynchon's voice with its capacity to move from the elegy to the epic catalogue. The narrator sounds like a survivor looking through the massed wreckage of his civilization, 'a salad of despair.' That image, to suggest but one of the puns in the word Tristero, is typically full of sadness, terror, love, and flamboyance. But then, how else should one imagine a tryst with America? And that is what this novel is" (New York Times). [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        The Winged Man

Doubleday, New York 1966 - 190 Pp. Stated First Edition, Code H-1 On P. 190. Expanded Into A Novel By Van Vogt, From A Short Story (Officially, But Highly Unlikely) By His Wife E Mayne Hull. Trace Of Rubbing At Corners Of Book. Doubly Inscribed To A Long-Time Sf Fan, By The Authors, "For ----------- And ---------------, With My Very Best Wishes - All The Luck And Good Fortune In The World, Particularly Right Now - Van", And "I Add My Good Wishes To Van's - Affectionately, Mayne". Dj With A Little Rubbing Down Center Of Spine And At Corners, Wear With 1/2" Closed Tear At Top Of Rear Spine Fold, Tiny Loss At Bottom Of Rear Spine Fold, Not Price-Clipped, Very Slight Fading To Blue Color On Spine Panel. Van Vogt's Explanation Of Their Collaboration Was That She Had Written A Short Story, Which He Greatly Expanded; Van Vogt Later Told His Second Wife That All Of Mayne's Work Was His Own; He Pasted Labels In His Own Copies Of Their Books, To That Effect; And Said That He Wrote Under Her Name Only Because Astounding Had A Policy Of Publishing Only One Story By An Author In A Single Issue, And He Got Around That By Using Her Name For A Second Story In The Same Issue. This Is All Murky; Friends Have Indicated That Mayne Had No Interest In Sf, But It Is Not Implausible That She Would Be Writing Given Her Education, Background, And Personality. .         Magick Lantern Cycle (Original film program for the Spring Equinox 1966 screening)

Film-makers' Cinematheque, New York 1966 - Original film program for the 1966 screening of six Kenneth Anger films, being shown on the Spring Equinox (March 21, 1966). Screened at Jonas Mekas's Film-maker's Cinematheque coopperative theater, then located at 125 West 41st Street in New York. Films at the screening included "Kustom Kar Kommandos," "Fireworks," "Scorpio Rising," "Eaux d'artifice," and a prelude entitled "Anger Aquarian Arcanum." Also included was the premiere screening of the "Sacred Mushroom Edition" of his film "Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome," which condensed an earlier three-screen edition of the film into a single, superimposed image. In hip late-1960s fashion, the program includes specific instructions for "psychedelic researchers" who wished to view the film as it was fully intended: "in that Holy Trance called High."Anger, one of the most significant filmmakers to come out of the American avant-garde in the mid-1960s, was born in Southern California and began making films when he was only ten years old. His work often prominently featured homosexual themes, and his career-long fascination with the mystical and magical is prominently on display in the "Magick Lantern Cycle" as well. The Film-maker's Cinemantheque, co-founded by Jonas Mekas in 1962, would offer a home, albeit with an oft-shifting location, to avant-garde New York filmmakers, and would later grow to become the Anthology Film Archives, one of the world's largest and most important repositories of avant-garde film. Black, white, and day-glo orange card wrappers, printed in black and white on purple, blue, red, and white stock throughout. 8.5 x 11 inches (22 x 28 cm), nine pages, saddle-stitched with plastic spine protector as issued. Very Good plus, with a reading crease to the front wrapper, a single unobtrusive ink notation of an arrow on one of the pages. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Theory of Self-Reproducing Automata. Edited and Compiled by Arthur W. Banks

Urbana & London University of Illinois Press 1966 - Octavo. Original green cloth, titles to spine and upper board in black. With the dust jacket. Contemporary ownership signature in blue ink to the front free endpaper. An excellent, fresh copy in the lightly rubbed jacket that is tanned, particularly along the spine panel, and has some nicks and short splits at the edges. First edition of this important work on self-reproduction in machines and life forms, scare in the dust jacket. Von Neumann became interested in the abilities of computers to self-reproduce during his work on the Institute for Advanced Studies computer project - noting that, since a Turing machine can make exact copies of any readable sequence, it can copy itself. He hoped to formulate a theory of self-reproduction that would be general enough to explain and predict self-reproduction in both machines and living things. "Using the same method of logical substitution by which a Turing machine can be instructed to interpret successively higher-level languages - or by which Gödel was able to encide mathematical statements within ordinary arithmetic - it was possible to design Turing machines whose coded instructions addressed physical components, not memory locations, and whose output could be translated into physical objects, not just zeros and ones. 'Small variations of the foregoing scheme,' von Neumann continued, 'also permit us to construct automata which can reproduce themselves and, in addition, construct others'. Von Neumann compared the behaviour of such automata to what, in biology, characterises the 'typical gene function, sefl-reproduction plus production - or stimulation of production - of certain specific enzymes. Viewing the logic of self-replication and self-reproduction through the lens of formal logic and and self-referential systems, von Neumann applied the results of Gödel and Turing to the foundations of biology" with his conjectures hitting "the heart of the probability or improbability of the origin of life" (Dyson, Turing's Cathedral, pp. 283-285). Together with Stanislaw Ulam, von Neumann attempted to develop these ideas for publication, but it remained unfinished at his death. "The incomplete manuscript, including a lengthy introduction based on a series of five lectures given by von Neumann at the UNiversity of Illinois in 1949, was eventually assembled, with careful editing by Arthur Burks, and published as Theory of Self-Reproducing Automata almost ten years after von neumann's death. Our understanding of self-reproduction in biology, and our development of self-reproducing technology, proceeded almost exactly as the proposed theory described" (Dyson, p. 286).         Cabaret

It won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Featured Actor (Joel Grey's iconic turn as the Kit Kat Club's Master of Ceremonies). It ran for 1165 performances, closing September 6, 1969. This rehearsal script is a memento from that original production—""a shocking Broadway novelty at the time… [that] charted the pulse of a civilization going mad"" (New York Times), and ""influential in making the art of political theatre both more accessible and more popular"" (Stephen Gallagher).
