Specimen pages of Korean movable types

Los Angeles: Dawson's Book Shop, 1966. Folio extra (44 cm, 17.375"). [1] f., frontis., 73, [1 (blank)] pp.; illus., 22 mounted samples. One of the Primary Edition of McGovern's leaf book of Korean printing using movable type. Our colleague Dr. Jerrold G. Stanoff of the Rare Oriental Book Company (ABAA, ILAB) writes: “This is a monumental and exhaustive work consisting of a total of 22 specimens of movable type & paper with tipped in examples. Each example exhibits a different movable type font, with a paragraph of description and identification in English with the font name in Hangul or Korean characters.” => In this Copy LXVI (i.e., 66) of 95 "primary" copies, all 22 specimens are original, none are facsimiles — a difference from copies of the standard edition. The earliest specimen dates from 1422 and the last from 1896.    Opposite each tipped-in leaf, as noted above, is an explanation of the type used and its history and also an brief essay about the book from which the leaf comes. Prior to the presentation of the leaves, the volume has a foreword by Dr. Kim Chewon, Director of the National Museum of Korea, an “Outline of the Development of Korean Printing” (pp. 11–18), and a “Chronological Table of Korean Fonts” (pp. 19–20). After the last sample leaf are a “Handlist of books and articles on Korean types & printing” (pp. 67–70), an index (p. 71), a printer's note on production problems and solutions (p. 72), and the colophon (p. 73).    Specimen Pages was printed by Peter Brogen, The Voyagers' Press, Ltd., in Tokyo, in => an edition of 300 copies of which “ninety-five copies comprise the Primary Edition and are numbered from I to XCV. The remaining copies are numbered from 96 through 300.” The colophon also informs us that “The text was set in an experimental, modified version of the type cut for William Bulmer by William Martin in London, about 1780. The matrices were supplied as a special service by the Kobundo Typefoundry, Tokyo[.] The various handmade papers used for this entire volume were supplied by Sanborn, Inc., Tokyo and were made under their direction to specifications provided by The Voyagers' Press[.] Hand composition: Mr. Moriya Yoshiaki[.] Presswork: Mr. Horst Leonard & Mr. Nako Yoshio” (p. 73).    Provenance: From the library of American collector Albert A. Howard, small booklabel ("AHA") at rear.         De Hamel & Silver, Disbound and Dispersed, 145. Original quarter white cloth with gilt-stamped black cloth spine label and orange embossed paper sides, in original plain paper dust jacket and housed in the publisher's blue cloth openback slipcase, lightly sunned at top of the rear panel. Small rent in spine of plain dust jacket; volume, near fine.

        Cabaret

1966 - "MASTEROFF, Joe (book). EBB, Fred (lyrics). KANDER, John (music). Cabaret (Rehearsal Version). New York: The Studio Duplicating Service, August 18, 1966. Quarto, original flexible stiff coated blue paper binder with metal fasteners; pp. [120]. $1600.Vintage mimeographed rehearsal script for one of the 1960s most provocative and influential musicals.Based on John Van Druten's 1951 play I Am a Camera (which was based on Christopher Isherwood's Berlin Stories), Cabaret opened November 20, 1966, directed by Harold Prince. It won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Featured Actor (Joel Grey's iconic turn as the Kit Kat Club's Master of Ceremonies). It ran for 1165 performances, closing September 6, 1969. This rehearsal script is a memento from that original production—"a shocking Broadway novelty at the time [that] charted the pulse of a civilization going mad" (New York Times), and "influential in making the art of political theatre both more accessible and more popular" (Stephen Gallagher). Script is hand-numbered "31" on first page and has the mimeographed typescript notation "Property of: HAROLD PRINCE 1 Rockefeller Plaza New York City."Mild embrowning to leaves, expert restortion to covers.         The Circle Game.

Toronto: Contact Press,, 1966. Octavo. Original wrappers, printed in red and black. Light toning to wrappers, splash mark to front somewhat showing through on front endpaper, but otherwise very nice, overall a very good copy. First edition, signed by the author on the title page, one of 200 copies issued in wrappers aside from a "Library edition" of 50 hardback copies. The Circle Game was Atwood's first regularly published book, following only a self-published poetry collection Double Persephone in 1961. It won her the first of her many awards, the Governor-General's Award. This copy has the contemporary ownership inscription on the half-title of Patrick Lane (b. 1939), an important Canadian poet of Atwood's Generation, who also won the G-G's award in 1978. A laid-in ticket for a more recent literary festival provides the provenance for the signature.

Contact Press, Toronto 1966 - The simultaneous paper issue. Octavo, white card covers with flaps, cover drawing in red by the author. pp (ii), 80, (4). Title page printed in red and black, repeating Atwood's spiral cover drawing. Spine, page edges, and margins of covers a bit tanned, especially the rear cover which has a tanned margin of one inch at top and about half an inch at the fore margin; else fine. With the extensive pencil notes in text margins in his small hand, his ink name at front, and laid in sheet of notes, of James Cascallen. James Andrew Carscallen (1934-2016), studied under Northrop Frye for his PhD and was a Victoria University professor 1965-1996. He helped Atwood with some of her early manuscripts and she regarded him as a friend. Atwood took her undergraduate degree from Vic. There were 200 copies of the paper issue and 50 of the hardcover issue. This, Atwood's first major poetry collection, won the Governor-General's Award for Poetry in 1966. It was the only Contact Press book to win a GG (Contact Press was the most important English language publisher of modernist poetry in Canada in its time). Scarce on the market these days.         Ficciones.

Buenos Aires: Emecé Editores,, 1966. Octavo. Original grey wrappers, spine and front wrapper lettered in black and red. Spine creased and faded, extremities rubbed, text block toned. A very good copy. Second edition, seventh impression, signed by the author on the half-title. This copy is from the library of Jorge Luis Borges's controversial English-language translator, Norman Thomas di Giovanni (1933–2017), though unmarked as such. Produced in collaboration with Borges, di Giovanni's translations were the first concentrated efforts to translate the majority of Borges's works into English. The working relationship between di Giovanni and Borges was so close that di Giovanni was given a creative credit and a share of the royalties. Borges published his second collection of fiction El Jardin de senderos que se bifurcan in 1941. The eight stories contained in this collection were combined with six new stories under the collective title of Ficciones in 1944. The second edition of Ficciones, first published in 1956, saw the first publication of three short stories by Borges: "The End", "The Sect of the Phoenix", and "The South".
