        'Way back when wool was 20/- a lb'. A very large collage comprising 47 original individual caricatures of well-known pastoral identities ('Portrait sketches by Bushwaka' - black ink on paper, mounted on heavy card)

      The sketches range between 100-140 mm high and 70-90 mm wide (two are smaller); they are mounted in five roughly straight lines, with their names and regional addresses (or rural industry employers) added in ballpoint pen to the mount. It is behind glass in its original and appropriately rustic white-painted wooden frame (external dimensions 770 x 970 mm, visible image size 595 x 800 mm). There is a Royal Easter Show Art Prize Exhibitions label on the verso, identifying the artist as Frank F. Forster, 10 Walker Ave, Narrabeen. The asking price on the label was $100, indicating it was exhibited on this occasion after the introduction of decimal currency (February 1966), but it looks earlier (perhaps 1940s-50s - just count the hats!). Whether this was the artist's intention, or whether it is indeed a product of an earlier time, we cannot say, but it certainly hits the spot. These are not just caricatures, they are clearly characters, presumably mates of Bushwaka himself: Cunningham Henderson of Casino; O.O.H. Dangar of Narrandera; C.J. Chisholm of Khancoban; A.H. Jeffreys and D.H. McKay of Delegate; Bert Parkes of Collarenabri; Mick Raleigh and Jack Watts of Wagga; E.H. Turner of Gunning ... and on it goes. Cunningham Henderson died at the age of 89 in December 1954; although he is depicted as an elderly gentleman in this group portrait, there is no sense of 'In Memoriam' about it. The last word on the subject goes to Year Book Australia 2000 (page 447): 'Prosperity in the wool industry peaked in 1950-51 when the average greasy wool price reached 144.19 pence per pound'.

"Every Building on the Sunset Strip" is Ed Ruscha's innovative 1966 photographic study that pictures sequentially each architectural facade on both the North and South sides of the fabled Sunset Strip from 8101 - the still extant Jaguar dealership - to 9156 - the late, great Schwab's Pharmacy. Pandora's Box lives! An internally bright, handsome example of the 1970 second printing (entry B4 in Siri Engberg's "Edward Ruscha: Editions 1959-1999", and whose 1966 edition is cited on pages 142-143 of Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's "The Photobook: A History Volume I", pages 198-199 of The Hasselblad Center's "The Open Book", and pages 182-185 of "The Book of 101 Books") limited to five thousand unnumbered copies showing a tiny crimp at the base of the spine along with soiling and a soft crease along the spine of the external wrappers. There is some trivial soiling and minor chipping to the white paper covering along the top and bottom edges of the slipcase accompanied by short separating tears at the corners of the aperture. The silver mylar overlay of the slipcase is still glossy. It has been priced accordingly.       n.p., N.P. 1966 - framed painting (34 by 28 inches). A framed painting depicting a guard at the fortress and monastic community at Qumran. Shraga Weil (1918-2009) was an Israeli artist. Born in Prague in 1918, he studied at the National School of Arts there. He served in the Hungarian resistance to the Nazis during World War II. After the war, he joined the exodus to Israel. He received training in monumental and graphic techniques at the Academy of Arts in Paris in 1953. He worked as a designer and illustrator of books during the 1950s, during which time he was illustrator of The Dead Sea Scrolls (New York: Limited Editions Club, 1966). This work was included as an illustration in that book. In the 1960s and 1970s, he created several architectural designs, including the copper doors for the main entrance of the Knesset building and the residence of the President of Israel in Jerusalem.
