Typed Letters Signed

Np: California. Soft cover. Fine. TWO TYPED LETTERS SIGNED BY RONALD REAGAN, one signed "Dutch" as governor-elect in 1966; the second signed "Ronald" as Governor in 1969. The first letter, dated December 9, 1966 on Reagan's personal stationery ("Ronald Reagan / Governor-Elect / State of California") is written to his cousin, Milford L. Smith, who had written to Reagan about a speech delivered by Mr. Smith's son, Dennis, at a recent Rotary Club meeting. The original printed notes for the meeting are included and mention that Dennis "made an outstanding presentation... It will be a long time before any of us will forget his statement: 'God started some of us off with two strikes against us but we stand firm in our knowledge that he will never let us strike out.'" Reagan, in his letter, enthusiastically responds, "You have great reason to be proud of Dennis. The line you sent me that he spoke at the Rotary Club is something to be remembered. When I see some of our beatniks protesting because life isn't being handed to them on a big enough platter, I'm going to remember this line." Signed "Dutch". The second letter included is dated September 4, 1969, on Reagan's California Governor's stationery and is addressed to Dennis, congratulating him on becoming "President of the Sterling-Rock Falls Toastmasters Club". Reagan writes: "I didn't want to miss the opportunity to congratulate you on your achievements-- it must be a great personal satisfaction to know of the impact your leadership has had on the community." Signed: "Ronald". California: 1966, 1969. Two 8.5 x 11 inch sheets (Reagan letterhead). With original envelope (with Reagan's return address) for the first letter. Neat folds, otherwise fine. Custom cloth presentation box available for $175; half-leather for $375.

The Collected Papers of Paul A. Samuelson: Volumes 1-4

Cambidge, MA: MIT Press, 1966. First edition of the first four volumes of the Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Samuelson collected papers. Octavo, original cloth, 4 volumes. Each are fine in very good to near fine dust jackets. Included are the contents pages in volumes 1,2, and 4. Paul Samuelson is one of the developers of both neo-Keynesian and neoclassical economics, the latter of which still dominates mainstream economics. He was awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for having written considerable parts of economic theory, and he is one of the ten Nobel Prize winning economists still signing the Economist's statement opposing the Bush tax cuts. One of Samuelson's many novel contributions was that he generalized and applied mathematical methods developed for the study of thermodynamics to the field of economics. His inspiration for doing so came, in part, from his mentor, polymath Edwin Bisdwell Wilson who was a former Yale student of the founder of chemical thermodynamics, Willard Gibbs. Samuelson, therefore, is a successful example of interdisciplinarity, and he combined these ideas in his magnum opus Foundations of Economic Analysis (1947).

The Collected Scientific Papers of Paul A. Samuelson. Volumes I-V

Cambridge, MA: MIT Press, 1966-1986. First editions of each volume of the collected papers of Nobel Prize-winning economists papers. Octavo, 5 volumes, original cloth. Each are near fine in very good dust jackets. Each volume is signed by Paul A. Samuelson; volumes I & II are signed by fellow Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph E. Stiglitz, who served as editor of these volumes. "It is a measure of Professor Samuelson's preeminence that the sheer scale of his work should be so much taken for granted," observes a reviewer in the "Economist" who goes on to note that "a cynic might add that it would have been better for Professor Samuelson to write less merely to give others a chance to write at all."In fact, Samuelson's output, his "extraordinary mastery of methods, both mathematical and linguistic" (review of Volume 4 of "The Collected Scientific Papers"), have not diminished. Volumes 1 through 4 encompass more than 280 articles. The first two contain virtually all of Samuelson's contributions to economic theory through mid-1964; Volume 3 contains all the scientific papers written from mid-1964 through 1970, and the last volume brings his work up to through 1976. A very attractive set, scarce signed. The Wrong Venus (First Edition, inscribed to John D. MacDonald)

New York: New American Library (NAL), 1966. First Edition. First Edition. INSCRIBED by the author on the front endpaper to fellow mystery writer John D. MacDonald: "To John D. / With admiration / Charlie." A brief but eloquent inscription, linking two of the best hard-boiled mystery writers of a generation. & & Williams also wrote the screenplay for the 1968 film adaptation, "Don't Just Stand There!" starring Robert Wagner and Mary Tyler Moore. Williams is best known for his books "Dead Calm," "Aground," and "The Sailcloth Shroud." Like other hard-boiled authors, much of his output came in the form of paperback originals, and his books are seldom found inscribed, this being only the second such copy we have seen. On top of that, a stellar association. & & Near Fine in a Near Fine dust jacket. A lovely copy.

        Haggadah for Passover

Paris: Trianon Press, 1966. Folio. xxiv, 135pp. One of 292 copies, signed by the artist, Ben Shahn. With a Translation, Introduction and Notes by Cecil Roth. Illustrated with line drawings and Hebrew calligraphy by Shahn, as well as twelve full-page color plates and a double-page Menorah frontispiece. The frontispiece is an original signed lithograph printed from stones at the Imprimerie Mourlot, with additional colors and gold ink applied by hand through stencils. & & Without question this is one of the most beautiful books ever designed by an American artist. The twelve color plates celebrate the beauty and spirit of the Seder meal with its rich tradition of the Exodus from Egypt. In the center of each print Shahn has calligraphed a Hebrew passage from the service. This is surrounded by brightly colored vignettes portraying scenes from the text. At the close of the ritual, Shahn has illustrated a favorite folk song often sung after the Passover meal. "An Only Kid" is embellished with ten playful half-page line drawings printed in sanguine ink. In the Introduction, Shahn writes, "The making of this book has proceeded much more in the manner of a painting perhaps, than of a proper book. It reflects my memories of the Passover in my father's house. It reflects my early impressions and feelings; the images that were always evoked in my fancy by the majestic and meaningful ritual." This work ranks as one of the two most stunning modern Haggadahs, the other being that of Arthur Szyk.& & Unbound, as issued, in stiff glassine-covered wrappers lettered in gilt. The book and the portfolio are housed in a vellum-covered box with metal clasps, as well as the publisher's original shipping slipcase. The front cover of the vellum-covered box is stamped in gold with Shahn's calligraphy. A very fine copy.

A collection of his letters, manuscripts, and printed works

As issued, but generally poor to good. This collection was gathered by Terry Risk who visited Count Potocki in the early 1970s at his home, the Villa Vigoni, near Draguignan in the south of France. It includes a number of his printed works, all the letters back and forth, letters (some in photocopy) to other people, magazine articles by or about him, four typed unpublished manuscripts, a block of linotype for one of his cards, a collection of photographs, copies of a number of legal documents, and one broadside which he always regarded as one of the most significant gestures of his life. A partial list of the items includes: The Blood Royal of England (1966), Dog's Eggs (1971), The Fifth Columnist (1960), Lordly Lovesongs (1931), Meillerie (1972), Prison Poems (1933), Snobbery With Violence (1932), Whited Sepulchres (1936), and Wild Oats (1927). Many of these are in severely limited editions and/or are signed by him. The manuscripts are essentially autobiographical. The letters include those to and from Terry Risk; also to the booksellers David Low and Robin Waterfield. The broadside is The Unconstitutional Crisis, a protest against the Abdication of King Edward VIII. Finally there is a complete set of The Right Review magazines which except for the last two belonged to Richard Aldington. Count Potocki of Montalk (1903-97) was an eccentric poet, private press printer, polemicist, and the self-proclaimed "King of Poland". He was born in New Zealand but went to Europe in 1926 where he lived for many years in England and then from 1949 at the Villa Vigoni, a ramshackle place near Draguignan in the south of France. In 1932 he became involved in a legal case which has often been written about. He was trying then simply to find someone to print a few poems, including an off-color one, so he could send them around to his friends. The printer he approached, seeing the nature of the poems, took them to the police, and Potocki was arrested. He was tried at the Old Bailey and was sentenced to six months in Wormwood Scrubs prison. His travails provoked a good deal of sympathy in the literary world and eventually funds were provided so that he could do his own printing. Over the years he published a variety of things, most notable among them his Right Review which appeared intermittently. However, everything he printed was done with remarkable clumsiness. His work is riddled with faults, from poor design to terrible type-setting to bad inking of his press. He always maintained that if he had had time and money, he could have been one of the world's great printers, but the results, as seen very clearly here, show otherwise. This is a remarkable and very personal collection. Although it is not by any means a complete one of Potocki's work, it does have the essential items, many of them from the hands of the man himself or from those who also knew him. Perhaps someone now will find enough in it to be fascinated. A detailed inventory and images of the collection is available at: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/66e4vxrwha9ebi2/31geWBiMUf

        WIND IN THE WILLOWS

London: Methuen and Co, 1966. SIGNED BY ERNEST H. SHEPARD. With illustrations throughout by Ernest H. Shepard 8vo, publisher's original green cloth lettered and decorated in gilt on the spine, with decorated endpapers in green by Shepard, and in the original dustjacket also featuring artwork by Shepard. 320 pp. A very nice, very pleasing copy, SIGNED by the artist. There is some expected typical mellowing or evidence of age, though the book remains handsome and attractive. SIGNED BY ONE OF THE GREAT MASTERS OF ILLUSTRATION FOR CHILDREN'S LITERATURE. ERNEST H. SHEPARD, THE ILLUSTRATOR OF WINNIE THE POOH. 'Shepard’s illustrations to such classics as WIND IN THE WILLOWS and the four primary WINNIE THE POOH books are without doubt one of the great achievements of children’s book illustration. It is important to know though, how remarkable it is that Shepard’s success as an illustrator was not based on the technical power of draughtsmanship, even while we see the amazing and colourful journeys for the eyes that one finds in books by other masters such as Rackham or Dulac. His illustrations are classics for a wholly different reason. To understand, simply look at his drawings through the eyes of childhood, for Shepard’s Mr. Toad and Ratty, like his Pooh, Piglet, Eeyore, all cast their compulsive spell because the artist only ever makes them but very slightly removed from the stuffed toys on the nursery shelf or a child's own drawings.'
