        Arms and Influence.

Yale University Press, New Haven 1966 - First edition. Octavo, original red cloth. Signed by the author on the title page. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. A very nice copy of an important book, that is uncommon signed. In Arms and Influence, Nobel Prize-winning economist Thomas Schelling argues that bargaining power, and the exploitation of this power, for good or evil, to preserve peace or to threaten war, is diplomacy—the diplomacy of violence. The author concentrates in this book on the way in which military capabilities—real or imagined—are used, skillfully or clumsily, as bargaining power. He sees the steps taken by the U.S. during the Berlin and Cuban crises as not merely preparations for engagement, but as signals to an enemy, with reports from the adversary's own military intelligence as our most important diplomatic communications. Even the bombing of North Vietnam, Mr. Schelling points out, is as much coercive as tactical, aimed at decisions as much as bridges. "An exemplary text on the interplay of national purpose and military force" (Book Week). [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Richard Nixon, speaking before The University of Rochester, amid protests against his appearance, denounces historian Eugene Genovese for his vocal support of the Viet Cong rebels: <i>"Any teacher who uses the forum of a university to proclaim that he welcomes victory for the enemy in a shooting war crosses the line between liberty and license. If we are to defend academic freedom from encroachment, we must also defend it from its own excesses."</i> Signed only four years before the Kent State shootings would galvanize the nation against the Vietnam War

        The Spectra Hoax [presentation, association]

Wesleyan University Press, Middletown, CT 1966 - Middletown, CT: Wesleyan Univeristy Press, 1961. First Edition. Signed by lead hoaxer Witter Bynner [as "Emanuel Morgan"], presented to Kenneth L. Ball, the student who first discovered his identity. Octavo, 158 pp, beige cloth with black and white imprinting, jacket. Fine book in near fine jacket showing trace edgewear. A singular copy of the book about "the hoax" . In the early years of the twentieth century, all of the arts - particularly poetry - were thriving in the midst of a post-industrial-revolution swell of excitement, creativity and new aesthetic "schools"; poetry, for its part, rolled out Imagism, Vorticism, Futurism, Chorism, and a rogue's gallery of other new poetic genres, each based on its own aesthetic theorizing. Appearing in the midst of this rather joyous and certainly passionate carnival were Emanuel Morgan, expatriate painter-turned-poet reunited with his native Pittsburgh, and his close friends and colleagues, the beautiful Hungarian poet (who wrote in Russian) Anna Knish, and barrister Elijah Hay. In 1916, Morgan and Knish took the poetry world by storm with their Spectrist school of poetry, which was based on three visions of the term - spectra, the task of the artist to perceived beauty in its component colors, rather than as the glorious white light in which it occurs naturally; the reflex vibrations of that same light which occur only within the artist, like the light phenomena in our eyes; and spectre, the yet more difficult task of uncovering the subtle, hidden spirits behind and within beauty. Morgan used regular rhymed stanza in his spectrism offerings, while Knish used only free verse, but they were attempting the same thing. The poetic world was quickly awash in discussion and analysis of the spectrist school; a few thought the intellectual foundation to be a bit pretentiously framed, others thought it strange that there had been no public appearances by the pair or their lawyer colleague Hay; but the fermenting, energetic world of poetry at the time was full of new voices and figures. No one seemed to take much note of the fact that some of the lines seemed a bit nonsensical, others downright humorous. After all, poetry had few rules, even then. Some were suspiscious, however, that many of the poems, especially in the duo's lead vehicle, the publication Spectra, didn't seem to fit, in any clear way, the espoused theory. Some uneasy suspicion about Morgan and Knish - and about poet/lecturers Witter Bynner and Arthur Ficke, who first wrote about them in depth - started to sprout. Finally, in 1918, a young student at the University of Wisconsin, after a lecture by poet Witter Bynner, asked Bynner if it were not true that he was, in fact, Emanuel Morgan, and that Ficke was, in fact, Knish. A bit wearied- even embarrassed - by the hoax by then [and knowing that his underlying goal of lampooning pretentious schools of poetry couldn't be consummated anyway, without revelation] , Bynner confessed all, including the fact that their supportive "briefless barrister", Elijah Hay, was another colleague, Marjorie Allen Seiffert. One of the greatest literary hoaxes in history was at an end. Although the identity of the young challenger is not known with certainty (it was not, Bynner let it be known, Horace Kallen, who at one time claimed the unmasking], there is some feeling that Kenneth L. Ball, to whom this volume was presented and inscribed "with a bow" by Bynner [signing as Emanuel Morgan], was that student. The volume contains the history of the hoax as well as the complete text of the original Spectra. Please feel free to ask questions or request additional scans. - L6 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Three Original Paintings

Two original acrylic miniature paintings and one miniature watercolor painting. Each is approximately 3.25" x 4.25" and is housed in an envelope addressed to Lady Kay Deeks. As follows: 1) an original acrylic painting mounted on a white card with Nocho&#39;s name stamped on the verso and on the flap of the envelope. The envelope was sent from Montreal and postmarked 1966, addressed in his Nocho&#39;s hand to Lady Kay Deeks in London, with his return address handwritten on the flap; 2) an original acrylic painting on a small greeting card, Inscribed inside "May God Forever Bless You" and Signed "Lobo Nocho." The envelope is postmarked New York 1968 and is addressed in his hand to "Lady Kay" with his name and address handwritten on the flap of the envelope; 3) an original watercolor on a greeting card Inscribed inside "God Bless" and Signed "Lobo Nocho." "Lady Kay Deeks" is written in his hand on the envelope, which was apparently delivered in person, as it bears no postal marks. The paintings are of abstract subjects and are quite striking. They are in fine condition. The envelopes are in very good condition.Nocho was an African-American expatriate artist who spent much of his life in France. He grew up in Philadelphia. When he was 19, he joined the Canadian Army, then transferred to the U.S. Army and participated in the Normandy invasion. Though many of his paintings won top awards and were exhibited in Philadelphia, he refused to sell any of them. At age 25, he renounced his American citizenship. His older brother said, "He was always sensitive about race and the way Negroes are treated in this country. He just couldn&#39;t adjust to Philadelphia life any more and once told me he thought everyone who looked at him on the street regarded him not as a painter, not even as a human being, but as a black man." After renouncing his citizenship, he worked as a singer and a dancer as well as a painter. He painted the design on the door of the popular Paris jazz club, the Mars Club, a haunt of American musicians, especially African-American musicians. At the age of 44, after becoming a French citizen, he became romantically involved with the fifty-year-old Sarah Churchill, daughter of Sir Winston Churchill. She rented a lavish Roman villa for him in which he could paint, though Churchill&#39;s father did not approve of her affair "with a Negro artist-playboy" (Jet, July 28, 1966). One of her published poems decries his objections: "Forgive me if I do not cry / The day you die / The simplest reason that I know / You said you&#39;d rather have it so" and "This is what I have chosen / This moment bitter and free / This is what I have chosen." Nocho&#39;s vivid, original art is very uncommon. .

[Flyer] Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band. The Charlatans. Avalon Ballroom [with Press Release]: Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band ..... (and some more news on the adventures of the Great Gnome of Rock&#39;n&#39;Roll)

San Francisco: Family Dog / Bindweed Press. [1966]. Flyer. 8.5" x 11". Handbill for a performance illustrated by Stanley Mouse (Family Dog 23). Illustration of three well-fed medieval minstrels holding forth with song. The psychedelic lettering has been colored in with red watercolors by an unknown person, somewhat sloppily but not unpleasingly. Signed by Stanley Mouse at the bottom with his "mouse" logo (and not inconceivably colored by him as well). Small tack holes in the corners, overall very good. Accompanied by a press release for Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band, known as The Great Gnome Biography written by Derek Taylor, the Apple Records/Beatles publicist. Ten loose sheets of typed ribbon copy with typed rectos only and stapled in the upper left-hand corner. With the address of Beefheart&#39;s management and public relations firms at the end. Fine. The famed rock critic Ralph J. Gleason&#39;s copy with his Signature at the top of the first sheet. The ten-page press release about the formation and evolution of the band in the form of a fable about The Great Gnome providing a greasy parchment of names for the band to choose from, with multiple (presumably imagined) quotes from Beefheart (Don Van Vliet), Alex St. Clair, and others. Gleason was a very influential critic of jazz and rock music, and was a founding editor of Rolling Stone. An amusing and inventive fable, we can find no evidence of publication, and this could presumably be unique. .

- Libro nuovo
