De Loach, Allen, Editor
New York: Intrepid Press, 1964. Complete run of Allen De Loach's small press poetry magzine / newsletter. 41 issues in 22 volumes. Varying softbound formats. Issue #1 co-edited by Will Inman. The magazine was published somewhat erratically starting bravely in 1964 and running through 1980. The editor's statement in the first issue reads as follows: "The purpose of this newsletter is to exist as a microphone for established poets to express views of the relevant nature of living and growing and to allow young poets a similar chance. Its second purpose is to extend the presence of American poets to the mind's eye of people who would not otherwise come in contact with the creative works of the American voice. This is not a competitive newsletter but a supplement to periodicals, such as FUCK YOU, FLOATING BEAR, and YOWL, that are doing an excellent job of blasting dogmatisms. Guts, vision, awareness, compassion. Can we learn the strengths, the depths, the resilience, of our guts by practicing to be intrepid? letting a little vision waken, awareness deepen, compassion sperm us to the quick? Let's try!" All issues in very good or better condition. De Loach's vision was wide-ranging and he included poets from all walks of life: beats, black mountaineers, east coast troublemakers etc. His front cover trademark (which ran beginning with issue #5) was a calligraphic image provided by artist Brion Gysin. Paul Blackburn, Gary Snyder, Diane DiPrima, John Wieners, Ted Berrigan, Tuli Kupferberg, Carl Solomon, Herbert Huncke and Phil Whalen were among the numerous contributors. Two of the … [Click Below for Full Description]

1964. 1st edition. NA. Tasha Tudor. An incidental drawing of a Boy and Girl. These unpublished watercolor paintings are framed separately. The young boy and girl sit in a quiet moment, each in a personal rocking chair. The girl in a pink dress and apron is cuddling her doll. The boy in a blue plaid shirt and rolled-up blue jeans is rapt by the book he reads. We have not identified these two paintings with any book, or card. They are in a similar style to other illustrations featuring children that Tudor painted in the 1950s and 1960s. See, for example, Tasha Tudor's Five Senses, First Delights and First Poems of Childhood. The two pieces are in "French mats" and matching gilt wood frames. Matching vertical cut ovals in the mats expose 6 ¼" x 4 ¾" of the underlying painting. The mat for the "boy" painting has aged to a darker color that its mate. It also shows some light acidification from the mat at the edges of the opening. The "girl" painting does not. Each frame is backed with black paper, with no indication of framer or date. Both pieces are signed at the lower right. The signature to the girl is a tiny print. From a Pennsylvania family. $6200.00 for the pair.

Ian Fleming
Unknown, 1964. From Russia With Love Ian Fleming Very Rare / Scarce Pirate Copy Here I have a very rare and extremely scarce pirate copy of the title 'From Russia With Love' by Ian Fleming. These Taiwanese Pirate Editions were produced in very small numbers, so finding these books (particularly this title) is extremely rare and very sought after by Fleming collectors (no other copies available on the internet, such a rare item). As you can see from the photos, this book was published in 1964 (unknown publisher) with no other printings. The purple outerboards have some marks to the front / back boards with the title in silver lettering to the spine. Internally, the book is relatively clean with only the remenance of where the DJ has sat on the rear endpapers (ref. photo), the front endpaper also has a small crease to the top left of the first page within the book (ref. photo). The stamp to the rear endpaper is present in all pirate copies (ref. photo). The DJ itself is in remarkable condition for such a scarce book which seldom appears with a complete DJ (usually they're teared all over the place). On this DJ, there is a small 1cm tear above letter 'R' in 'From' to the front of the DJ and also a 1cm tear underneath the name 'Ian' (ref. photos). However, as you can see from the photos, the DJ is complete, bright and quite fresh which is rarely the case with any of these pirate copies. These books were printed on really poor quality paper and came from a relatively warm climate. I've had this copy for over 10 years now and know exactly how scarce it is to come across this book … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ted Berrigan, General Editor; Ron Padgett, This Issue's Editor
Lorenz Gude & Ted Berrigan, 1964. Original wraps. A solid example of this fragile, highly-influential poetry journal published out of New York's Lower East Side, this issue specifically edited by Ron Padgett, the front cover (panels of difficult-to-read facial expressions) designed by Joe Brainard. Still though, very presentable and, internally, crisp and clean. New York: Tibor de Nagy Editions, 1964. Condition: Very good. 4to. Stapled pictorial wraps. Some faint soil to front wrapper. Mild toning overall. Very good. One of 500 unnumbered copies. A scarce and important publication which apparently ran just one issue. Forakis, Yampolsky, and Fleming (all artist's better known for other mediums) each contribute one work or "story" utilizing the conventions of the comic (panels, word balloons, etc.), but all non-narrative and veering towards the completely abstract, psychedelic and/or nonsensical. The motifs and styles clearly prefigure the work of later underground comic artists, and this is easily among the earliest we've seen to exhibit a non-commercial, "underground" aesthetic (albeit mixed with a fine art influence). Indeed, this publication predates by at least several months what is generally considered the first underground comic: Jack Jackson's GOD NOSE (which though printed the same year was clearly published sometime after January). And though the three pieces in GROPE don't quite demonstrate the over-the-top subversive quality one typically associates with the underground, all three clearly exhibit a prescient style that would soon come to fuller fruition in R. Crumb and others. Curiously, published by Tibor de Nagy, who had previously done nothing quite like this. OCLC shows just 12 holdings. [Attributes: First Edition]

This is a very nice archive of Helen Haywood's original Manuscript notes and artwork for her book "The Days of the Dinosaurs" published in 1964, the archive consists of much of the books original artwork, with over sixty sheets of drawings, many with multiple images on them, the size varies from around 20 on larger pieces of paper measuring 20 inches by 15 inches approx., the rest on smaller pieces about a quarter of that size, a few of the pieces of artwork are on boards, three have been done in pen and ink, also includes painted artwork for the books cover, there are also 19 photographic reproductions of the artwork on gevaert paper. Also there are over one hundred and fifty pieces of paper with both her handwritten and type written notes for the book the artwork is of a very good standard. Much of the notes and drawings were completed on thin paper, some of which has noticeable creases, the large pieces have been stored folded over the years, but as they are on thin paper it should be possible for them to be flattened out again with care, a good part of the archive is photographed in the uploaded pictures, though some of the drawings are not pictured, along with much of the handwritten an typed manuscript papers in good general condition, Helen Haywood (1908-1995) was an English writer and illustrator of children's books. She was born in England in 1908 but was taken as a child to Chile, where her father, an engineer, worked on the trans-Andean railway. She remained in Chile until she was approximately 15 years old. Her experiences were recounted in an unpu … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Jackson, MS?]: [Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party]. Photographic poster, 10-3/8 by 16-3/8 inches. At the 1964 Democratic National Convention, in Atlantic City, delegates from the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party (MDFP) challenged the all-white delegation from Mississippi claiming segregationists had prevented African Americans from voting in the primaries. The MFDP went a step further, arguing that it had selected delegates according to Democratic rules and that the MFDP's integrated delegation was therefore the legitimate convention delegation. Ultimately, Democratic Party leaders and the MFDP worked out a compromise that allowed the delegation to stay, mostly as non-voting guests, and the Democratic Party promised that the 1968 convention would not accept delegations elected without African American voters. Many white Democrats from the South walked out of the convention, marking the beginning of the Southern embrace of the Republication Party. Following the convention, the MFDP continued its campaign, scheduling a 'freedom ballot' on the same day as the presidential election. It was an opportunity for disenfranchised African Americans to practice voting. The MFDP nominated Lyndon Johnson as president, Hubert Humphrey as vice-president, Mississippi NAACP leader Aaron Henry for senate, Fannie Lou Hamer for US Congress in the 2nd District, Annie Devine in the 4th, and Victoria Gray in the 5th. The MFDP printed posters for all six candidates, and they are scarce today. A key and iconic item from the Civil Rights Movement. Minor wear and tanning. Generally very … [Click Below for Full Description]

1964. Atmospheric photograph of the mysterious Mr. Van Dine (pseudonym of Willard Huntington Wright). Known to us primarily as the writer of Golden Age mysteries, especially the Philo Vance books, Van Dine was in his day a well-known art critic. This photograph is evocative, with Van Dine casting a dramatic shadow (shades of The Thin Man) and, of course, smoking a cigarette. Inscribed to a Miss Y. Billy Garden of New York City. Attached is a letter from Miss Garden in which she details information about Mr. Wright's Scottish terriers. Miss Garden also described interviewing Van Dine in his apartment; he was dressed in a handsome blue robe with a blue Persian cat perched on his shoulder. We have not determined Miss Garden's relationship with Van Dine, but know that in 1964 she was involved in renewing the copyright of the Philo Vance murder cases(cf. A fantastic signed image.

DAHL, Roald
Alfred A. Knopf, 1964. First Edition. Hardcover. Octavo, 161pp., illustrated. PLEASE READ CAREFULLY: First issue, with the all-important six-line colophon at rear, and with a deep burgundy topstain. Spine gently cocked, a minor ding to one corner, and very faint soililng to the front board. Internally nice, and thus overall just about very good. In a nicer than usual price-clipped dust jacket, very near fine, with a vibrant spine. Though it's price-clipped, there is no ISBN / LCCN number on the rear panel, which indicates the first issue. There is a large and whimsical bookplate on the half-title page, which has a signature on it that reads "Roald Dahl." HOWEVER, the signature does not appear to us to be authentic, and thus we are selling this as a rather decent copy of the first edition in dust jacket; NOT a signed copy. The signature is FAKE / DUBIOUS / NOT GENUINE, or whatever term you prefer that indicates that Roald Dahl did not sign this bookplate. If you can live with this unsightly oddity, the book presents rather well in the bright and un-worn dust jacket, which, despite the annoying price-clip, is truly nicer than most. Very good- / near fine. [Attributes: First Edition; In Dust Jacket]

New York: Extensions, 1964. Condition: Very good. 8vos. Saddle-stapled wraps. Offset printing. Near fine or better overall. Bright, clean, and sharp. 96pp. each. Taking their name from Marshall McLuhan's 1964 UNDERSTANDING MEDIA, Zavrion and Neugroschel's EXTENSIONS bridged the worlds of art of poetry in ways not unlike 0 TO 9. As Gwen Allen wrote, "They were interested in how the magazine itself was a medium capable of extending language into other realms," a fact evident from the very first issue, which printed a version of Dan Graham's "Schema," four texts by Vito Acconci, and graffiti poems written by students in Paris during May 1968. Other contributors throughout the run include Arakawa, Mary Beach, Max Bense, André du Bouchet, André Breton, René Char, Jean Daive, Diane Di Prima, Jean Dubuffet, Charles Henri Ford, Jim Fulkerson, Dick Gallup, Jochen Gerz, Madeline Gins, Carter Ratcliff, Georg Trakl, Oswald Wiener, Miodrag Pavlovic, Erling Salomsen, Tony Towle, Emmett Williams, and many more.
