Dubuffet, Jean, French painter and sculptor (1901-1985).
Paris, Vence, Le Touquet u. o. O. , 1949-1964. 4to u. 8vo. 54 pages. Tlw. gedr. For his literary contributions, Bellow was awarded the Pulitzer Prize, the Nobel Prize for Literature, and the National Medal of Arts. He is the only writer to have won the National Book Award three times, and the only writer to have been nominated for it six times. In the words of the Swedish Nobel Committee, his writing exhibited "exuberant ideas, flashing irony, hilarious comedy and burning compassion... the mixture of rich picaresque novel and subtle analysis of our culture, of entertaining adventure, drastic and tragic episodes in quick succession interspersed with philosophic conversation, all developed by a commentator with a witty tongue and penetrating insight into the outer and inner complications that drive us to act, or prevent us from acting, and that can be called the dilemma of our age." Herzog is a 1964 novel by Saul Bellow. In a nod to the epistolary novels of early British literature, letters from the protagonist constitute much of the text. Herzog won the 1965 National Book Award for Fiction. Time Magazine … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

Brainard, Joe)
New York: Lorenz Gudi, 1964. Good+, light soiling to cover, light age-toning and occassional soiling as seems typical for publications of this nature... Mimeographed or xeroxed sheets stapled together, Printed by mechanical means upon 8.5" x 14" sized sheets, printed on one side only. 56 unnumbered sheets including covers, the 52nd and 53rd sheets are the same. Comics drawn by Underground artist Joe Brainard in collaboration with John Ashbery, Bill Berkson, Ted Berrigan, Robert Dash, Edwin Denby, Kenward Elmslie, Dick Gallup, Barbara Guest, Kenneth Koch, Frank Lima, Gerard Malanga, Frank O'Hara, Ron Padgett, Peter Schjeldahl, James Schuyler, Johnny Stanton, Tony Towle, Tom Veitch. Exceedingly rare, and quite an imortant collaborative (if short-lived at 2 issues) effort. First, and much scarcer issue of the two issues of Brainard's artist periodical devoted to storyless or abstract comics. Illustrated throughout by Brainard with texts by many important poets of the New York School, including Bill Berkson, Ted Berrigan, Edwin Denby, Barbara Guest, Kenneth Koch, Frank O'Hara, James Schuyler, Tom Veitch, Kenward Elmslie, Gerard Malanga, Ron Padgett, Johnny Stanton, and Tony Towle.

FLEMING, Ian.
London: Jonathan Cape, 1964. Octavo. Original black boards, titles to spine in silver, Japanese characters to front board in gilt, wood grain endpapers. With the Richard Chopping designed dust jacket. Housed in a custom black quarter morocco solander box. A few pencilled underlines in the first two chapters, free endpapers slightly browned, a couple of very faint spots to rear panel of jacket; an very good, bright copy. First edition, first impression, one of two dedication copies, inscribed by Fleming to one of the two dedicatees, Richard Hughes, on the front free endpaper: "To Dikko-san from Fleming-san. With all affection." In 1959, Ian Fleming was given a licence to travel. Fleming had written seven James Bond novels when he was approached by one of his colleagues at The Sunday Times with a plum journalistic assignment: to take a five-week, all-expenses-paid trip to visit the world's most exciting cities. Fleming's trip took in Hong Kong, Macau and Tokyo, then Honolulu, and home via the major U.S. cities. Along the way, he gathered material for his novels and his journalism: his Thrilling Cities tour became a popular newspaper series and a bestselling guidebook, while also furnishing much of the backdrop and research for the five Bond novels and seven short stories that would follow. In Tokyo, Fleming's local guide was Richard "Dikko" Hughes, The Sunday Times's Far East correspondent, an ebullient, hard-drinking Australian ex-boxer and part-time spy for MI6. Hughes recruited a Japanese journalist, Toreo "Tiger" Saito, to join them. Fleming was clear about what he wanted … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

Gorey, Edward
Four sheets, three of which measure 8 1/2 by 11 inches; the single sheet of text is smaller, measuring 8 by 6 inches, and is on blue paper. The pages reveal the unfolding of Gorey's creative process in developing the story and preliminary illustrations for his book, The Remembered Visit. The text page, which is dated April 16, 1964, shows Gorey's conceptual ideas for the main characters of the tale: a "dear little girl, Drusilla" and a "wonderful old man, famous for something, lofty + cultured in the dim past," who would become Mr. Crague. The sheets with the sketches for the illustrations show their evolution as they move from vague shapes to a structured page, finished with measurements and ruled lines. One of these sheets is dated April 21, 1964. Concept drawings by Gorey rarely appear on the market. Some creasing to all leaves, likely from mailing, otherwise fine. Together with a copy of the first edition of the book, published in 1965 by Simon and Schuster. Bound in pictorial boards with matching dust wrapper. Some foxing to edges of text block and wrappers, minor edgewear to boards, else crisp and near fine. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

MAO (Tse-Tung or Zedung.)
[No location, but probably Beijing or Tianjin, May 1964]. Duodecimo. Original red vinyl, title to front cover in blind, printed errata slip in rear pocket. Housed in a red quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. Bright, sharp covers, occasional underlining to text, hint of soiling to inside rear cover, tiny split at ends of final page gutter, text block entirely sound. A near-fine, fresh copy. Frontispiece portrait of Chairman Mao with tissue guard; Lin Biao calligraphic endorsement printed in brown (no priority). First edition, first printing, in the first state with uncorrected text, and rare errata leaf at rear. The first edition, printed for the General Political Department of the People's Liberation Army, was issued in two distinct states and bindings: the uncorrected first state text in red vinyl plastic, and the corrected second state text in printed wrappers. The corrected copies, issued in wrappers and intended for high-ranking officers, were released first; the uncorrected copies, issued in red vinyl and for use by brigade teams of up to eight men, were released shortly afterwards, as the sturdier binding took longer to manufacture. The mistake in the text occurs at the bottom of p. 82 and the top of p. 83, consisting of a transposed character, reading "li men wo yong" instead of "li yong wo men" (Schiller, p. 36). This copy also has the Lin Biao calligraphic endorsement leaf intact, after the frontispiece. In 1972 an edict was issued that Lin's name was to be obliterated from history, following disclosures that he had plotted a coup and planned to as … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

Watson, James D; Francis Crick; Maurice Wilkins; Arthur Kornberg, Joshua Lederberg
Elsevier Publishing Company, Amsterdam, 1964. First edition of this collection of Nobel Lectures in physiology or medicine from the years 1942-1962. Thick Octavo, original yellow cloth. Signed by all three Nobel Prize-winning scientists Francis Crick, James D. Watson and Maurice Wilkins on the title page. They were awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1962, "for their discoveries concerning the molecular structure of nucleic acids and its significance for information transfer in living material."Fine in a very good dust jacket with some closed tears and toning to the spine. An exceptional piece signed by these Nobel Prize-winning scientists. In the early 1950s, the race to discover DNA was on. At Cambridge University, graduate student Francis Crick and research fellow James Watson had become interested, impressed especially by Pauling's work. Meanwhile at King's College in London, Maurice Wilkins (b. 1916) and Rosalind Franklin were also studying DNA. The Cambridge team's approach was to make physical models to narrow down the possibilities and eventually create an accurate picture of the molecule. The King's team took an experimental approach, looking particularly at x-ray diffraction images of DNA. Watson and Crick took a crucial conceptual step, suggesting the molecule was made of two chains of nucleotides, each in a helix as Franklin had found, but one going up and the other going down. Crick had just learned of Chargaff's findings about base pairs in the summer of 1952. He added that to the model, so that matching base pairs interlocked in the middle of the double he … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

Title: The Sand Pebbles Script Dated: July 24, 1964 Script Draft: Estimating Draft Written by Robert Anderson -Description- This is an original movie script from the 1966 Steve McQueen Film, "The Sand Pebbles." This complete script has all of the studio issued pages inside and it is 188 pages long. It has the original Twentieth Century Fox production cover. The cover has some small tears around the edges. Please view all of the pictures above carefully. This original script is in very good overall condition. -Storyline- Engineer Jake Holman arrives aboard the gunboat U.S.S. San Pablo, assigned to patrol a tributary of the Yangtze in the middle of exploited and revolution-torn 1926 China. His iconoclasm and cynical nature soon clash with the "rice-bowl" system which runs the ship and the uneasy symbiosis between Chinese and foreigner on the river. Hostility towards the gunboat's presence reaches a climax when the boat must crash through a river-boom and rescue missionaries upriver at China Light Mission. Tertz, Abram.
Washington, B. Filipoff, 1964. 14 x 20 cm. 166 pages. Original, illustrated softcover in protective collector's mylar. Very good condition with minor signs of wear to the cover (tiny dampstain to upper cover). Inside as new. From the library of important slavist Maurice Friedberg. Inscribed / Signed by Tertz on the front pastedown in the year of the publication. Andrei Donatovich Sinyavsky (8 October 1925, Moscow - 25 February 1997, Paris) was a Russian writer, dissident, gulag survivor, emigrant, Professor of Sorbonne University, magazine founder and publisher. He frequently wrote under the pseudonym Abram Tertz (Abram Tertz). During a time of extreme censorship in the Soviet Union, Sinyavsky published his novels in the West under a pseudonym. The historical Abram Tertz was a Jewish gangster from Russia's past, Sinyavsky himself was not Jewish; his father, Donat Sinyavsky, was a Russian nobleman from Syzran, who turned Social Revolutionary and was arrested (after the revolution) several times as an „enemy of the people „. During his last stay in jail Donat Sinyavsky became ill, and, after his release, developed mental illness. Andrei Sinyavsky described his father's experiences in the novel „Goodnight!" A protege of Boris Pasternak, Sinyavsky described the realities of Soviet life in short fiction stories. In 1965, he was arrested, along with fellow-writer and friend Yuli Daniel, and tried in the infamous Sinyavsky-Daniel show trial. On 14 February 1966, Sinyavsky was sentenced to seven years on charges of „anti-Soviet activity" for the opinions of his fictional characters … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

Ernest Hemingway
NY: 1964. Hemingway, Ernest. A MOVABLE FEAST. 4to, editorial typescript consisting of 148 stamp-numbered pages, beginning with the first chapter through the end of the published book. At the top of the first page is a typed label: "Title: A MOVABLE [sic] FEAST / Author: Ernest Hemingway / Pub. Date March (Scribner." The final line is in ink. The "typescript" is on paper watermarked Atlantic Bond 20 and seems to have been reproduced by offset lithography, rather than any of the plain paper xerographic systems available at the time, giving this precedence over any previously described copied or printed galley proofs. Minor typographical and punctuation corrections appear as they were made by hand on the original. The preliminary material, including the title-page epigraph, the author's preface, and Mary Hemingway's note, was apparently not part of this version since the page numbering begins with 00001. At least two different typewriters were used. The whole is contained in a plain buff folder with a penciled note indicating that it was originally sent to an advance reader for the Book-of-the-Month Club. In this case, it was Donald Gallup, who was an acknowledged expert on Hemingway and other personalities mentioned in the book, notably Ezra Pound, T.S. Eliot, Gertrude Stein, and other American Expatriates in Paris. This item was acquired by us from Gallup and first sold to a private collector in 1987. We are not aware of any other copy being offered for sale since then. Nor does this item appear to be cataloged in the Scribner's Archives at Princeton, The Kennedy Library, or … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

(WHITE, E B ) THOREAU, Henry David
Boston: Houghton Mifflin, (1964). Boston: Houghton Mifflin. (1964). First thus: reissued in the Riverside Literary Series, with an introduction by E.B. White and, while not marked as such, this was E.B. White's own copy. Offered together with three other Walden-themed books from White's library: Walden Revisited by George F. Whicher, which is signed by White in 1945; Discovery at Walden by Roland Wells Robbins, inscribed by Robbins to White in 1947; and Index to Walden by Joseph Jones, inscribed by Jones to White in 1955. Four books on Walden from the library of E.B. White, a more powerful figure in the history of the environmental movement than most people realize: in 1958, it was White, in his position at the New Yorker, who was approached by Rachel Carson with the suggestion that he, White, cover the story of lawsuits filed in opposition to aerial sprayings of insecticide. White re-assigned the story back to Carson (later saying that he didn't "know a chlorinated hydrocarbon from a squash bug"), forwarding her letter to editor William Shawn. Carson's Silent Spring was serialized in the New Yorker in 1962, prior to its book publication. Condition, in the order listed above: fine without dust jacket, as issued; near fine, lacking the dust jacket; very good in a very good dust jacket; and very good in stapled wrappers. In 1953, White wrote of Walden in the New Yorker: “Every man, I think, reads one book in his life, and this one is mine.” First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine.
