Dinny Gordon Junior [with] Original Dust Jacket Art

Macrae Smith Philadelphia: Macrae Smith. (1964). Original gouache and pencil cover art for Dinny Gordon Junior by illustrator Evelyn Copeman depicting the winning teen ingenue smiling up at an all-American boy. The image measures approximately 7" x 8.5" (on 13" x 20" artist board). It is accompanied by a clear overlay with the title and author's name affixed, a sheet of tissue paper with various notes for the printer, and additional blank sheet with a warning about handling the original art; once attached to the board by tape but now loose. The art is fine and bright; the other items showing some toning from the tape, along with a few spots and a couple of tears. It is accompanied by a fine third printing of the book in an else fine price-clipped dustwrapper. In the article Dinny Gordon: Proto-Feminist, that appeared in the March 2006 issue of the Journal of American Culture, writer Joyce Litton posits that Anne Emery's most beloved character, Dinny Gordon, who had aspirations of a nontraditional career and delayed marriage, was a transitional character between the portrayal of the 1950s female in family life and the more enlightened feminist of the mid-to-late 1960s. While it's a little hard to tell from the jacket art, this volume has Dinny confronting not only the typical teen problems such as liking two different boys and losing her job as a result of a shoplifting incident, but also confronting the prejudice of her friends when a Jewish family moves into her neighborhood. Take that, Gidget. .

Molecular Microwave Oscillator and New Hyperfine Structure in the Microwave Spectrum of NH3. WITH: Infrared and Optical Masers

Lancaster PA and New York: American Institute of Physics. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Very Good. FIRST EDITIONS of two landmark papers by Charles Townes on the development of the laser. Townes shared the 1964 Nobel Prize in Physics "for fundamental work in the field of quantum electronics, which has led to the construction of oscillators and amplifiers based on the maser-laser principle" Einstein suggested "that under the proper circumstances atoms could release excess energy as light-either spontaneously or when stimulated by light... In 1951 Charles H. Townes, then at Columbia University in New York City, thought of a way to generate stimulated emission at microwave frequencies. At the end of 1953, he demonstrated a working device that focused 'excited' ammonia molecules in a resonant microwave cavity, where they emitted a pure microwave frequency. Townes named the device a maser, for 'microwave amplification by the stimulated emission of radiation'... An intense burst of maser research followed in the mid-1950s, but masers found only a limited range of applications as low-noise microwave amplifiers and atomic clocks. In 1957 Townes proposed to his brother-in-law and former postdoctoral student at Columbia University, Arthur L. Schawlow (then at Bell Laboratories), that they try to extend maser action to the much shorter wavelengths of infrared or visible light... Townes and Schawlow published their ideas for an 'optical maser' [later called a laser] in a seminal paper in the December 15, 1958, issue of Physical Review" (Britannica). The 1958 paper provided the blueprint for the laser, which was eventually used by Theodore Maiman to construct the first successful laser in 1960. TOWNES, C.H.; GORDON, J.P; ZEIGER, H.J. Molecular Microwave Oscillator and New Hyperfine Structure in the Microwave Spectrum of NH3, in The Physical Review, Vol. 95, No. 1, pp. 282-284; July 1, 1954. Quarto, original wrappers. Small, early owner signature at top of front wrapper, some fading to spine; otherwise fine. WITH: SCHAWLOW, A.L.; TOWNES, C.H. Infrared and Optical Masers, in The Physical Review, Vol. 112, No. 6, pp. 1940-1949, December 15, 1958. Quarto, original wrappers rebacked. Stamp of National Bureau of Standards at top of front wrapper, otherwise fine. Note: A custom cloth box is available for an additional $250.

Early exposure to these great American blues musicians inspired and influenced a generation of British musicians, including future rock stars Mick Jagger, Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood, all of whom played an important role in the blue-based British Invasion of the 1960’s.The posters created exclusively for the German AFBF festivals were designed by the eminent graphic designer Gunther Kieser and represent some of his finest music poster designs.
