Typed Letter, Signed, on Ansel Adams Stationery

Carmel California 1964. Ansel Adams, typed letter signed on Ansel Adams stationery (Carmel California). Dated May 6, 1964. This letter is addressed "Dear Dr. Davenport, " and continues to explain that he has just returned from a trip, hence "tardiness in replying to your letter of the 27th and commenting upon the prints." After other comments on the presentation, he offers critiques on 13 individually numbered images from a 2-Volume portfolio of images submitted by Davenport. Also present with the letter is a portion of one volume of the portfolio, with 5 images remaining in it. Cursory examination suggests that this is Vol 1 of the two. The letter signs off, "Keep it up - send more stuff whenever you can! all best" (signed in pen) Ansel Adams. All in very good conditoin. This letter has remarkable content and illustrates Adams's "teaching" mode. Charles K. Davenport was a medical doctor in California, working his way through medical school by selling his photos. He was a student of Ansel Adams and they subsequently became close friends. County. During his school years, Davenport sold photographs at banks, business offices, and other venues to help support his studies. He was a student of Ansel Adams in the 1960s, and they remained lifetime friends. Davenport's landscapes and still lifes were exhibited in the former medical society in Colton, and in San Bernardino County Museum, UC Riverside, and many other venues in California and later, in Oregon. His images appeared on magazine covers, calendars, and in books and an encyclopedia. Davenport passed away in Springfield, Oregon in 2007.

Baj. 19.63 / Marcel Duchamp" (Caprile, 1990). 4to (cm 35x26) pp. 28+incisioni broch, camicia e custodia in tela con applicazioni in lana (Loose as issued in original wrappers and cloth-covered box with wool decoration) Ottimo (Fine) [Baj, 1986; Mussini, Tedeschi, Caprile, 1990; Caprile, 2000]

The Romantics in Wales An Anthology

Tregynon, Newtown, Powys: Gwasg Gregynog, 2009 The edition is limited to 150 numbered copies in a quarter-leather binding by John Sewell to a design by Hilary Paynter. The text is set in Monotype Walbaum, and display lines in Monotype Romulus, all cast at Gwasg Gregynog by Gerard O'Shea. A digitized version of Open Romulus has been used on the title-page and is printed from a line block. The page design, by David Vickers, echoes the large paper format of the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries, and the book is printed by him on a special making of Zerkall mould-made paper. Hilary Paynter's wood engravings are printed direct from the original woodblocks, 222pp, 245X350mm.Bound by John Sewell to a design by Hilary Paynter. Hand-sewn and bound by hand in quarter dark blue goatskin, with hand-sewn silk endbands and titled along the spine. The upper cover printed black over dark mauve cloth boards with detail from Hilary Paynter's engraving of Pistyll Rhaeadr, a design which is mirrored on the lower cover. Presented in a buckram-covered slip case.GLYN TEGAI HUGHES became the first Warden of Gregynog in the University of Wales (1964-1989). His publications include two volumes on German Romanticism and books on the hymn-writer Williams Pantycelyn and, in Welsh, the poet Islwyn.HILARY PAYNTER was instrumental in the revival of the Society of Wood Engravers in the early 1980s, for over three decades. In 2006, she was elected President of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers. Her sixteen engravings for The Romantics in Wales (ten of which are full-page) combine acute and subtle observation, complete mastery of technique and, on occasion, captivating imaginative re-creation, as in a vision of the Shelleys' home at Cwm Elan, now under the waters of the reservoir. Other views include Pistyll Rhaeadr, Plas Newydd and Dinas Bran, Snowdonia, Symonds Yat, Tintern Abbey, Valle Crucis, and the castles at Caernarfon, Chepstow and Raglan.

Co-linearity of the gene with the polypeptide chain [first study to show co-linearity]

1964. Sarabhai, A. S.; Stretton, A. O. W., Brenner, Sydney (1927- ); and Bolle, A. Co-linearity of the gene with the polypeptide chain. Offprint from Nature 201 (1964). [4]pp. Text illustrations. 280 x 218 mm. Without wrappers as issued. Light browning, minor creasing, small marginal tears, otherwise very good. First Separate Edition. Brenner and his colleagues performed the first study to show co-linearity; i.e., that there is a simple congruence between the amino acid sequence of a protein and the nucleotide sequence of the gene determining that protein. Brenner and his team were working with "nonsense" mutants, called amber mutants, that terminated protein synthesis in E. coli genes."The presence of random nonsense mutants would therefore yield multiple random protein fragments of different sizes. . . . [W]e now suddenly realized that since we had all these amber mutants in this gene we could give a topological proof of co-linearity. And we wouldn't have to do any protein sequencing! The only assumption we would have to make is that the protein is always read from the same end, which seemed a very reasonable one. So in 1964 we published a paper which proved that the gene and the protein were co-linear by an argument that was totally unexpected at that time. We showed that as the amber mutations moved further and further to the right in the position of the gene, we got progressively more and more of the protein made :(Brenner, My Life, p. 103). Co-linearity means that changes in DNA sequence can produce changes in protein sequence at corresponding positions. Working independently, Charles Yanofsky and his colleagues were also able to show co-linearity; "it was the Yanofsky work on tryptophan synthetase that was to provide the specifics of amino acid substitutions with gene mutations" (Brock, p. 312).

        THE CASSIUS CLAY STORY

New York: Fleet Publishing Corporation, (1964.) . First printing. . Good only in a good dustjacket (bumped at several corners, also bumped and dented at bottom center of front cover - hard enough to have created a short split in the board; jacket is price-clipped and has several ragged tears and associated creasing along the bottom edge of the front panel, along with internal tape repairs. . SIGNED by the book's subject with his birth name, "Cassius Clay" -- a rare signature and especially so in this rather hard-to-find book, the first published biography of the great heavyweight champion. Issued later in the same year in which Clay took the heavyweight crown away from Sonny Liston (in their February 1964 bout), the book includes an account of the turbulent months that followed -- including the new champ's relationship with Malcolm X and his conversion to Islam, the controversy over his draft status, his much-publicized trip to Africa, and his suspension by the World Boxing Association (in effect as the book ends), which delayed his rematch with Liston until May 1965. Illustrated with photographs. Includes his professional boxing record. 116 pp.

[High School Yearbook]: Old Gold Book

Hot Springs High School Hot Springs National Park, Arkansas: Hot Springs High School. 1962-1964. First. First and only editions. Three volumes. Folios. Some modest wear, student inscriptions, mostly fine in custom cloth clamshell case. All three of Bill Clinton's High School yearbooks (he attended a junior high school which went through 9th grade). As one might imagine, "Billy" Clinton (as he is called) is all over the books. In his first year there are about half a dozen photos. The next year about ten and by Senior year there are nearly 20 different photographs of him, including the famous photo of him shaking hands with J.F.K. at Boys' Nation, as well as first chair saxophone in the All-State band, and in various other clubs and honor societies. Mercifully, these yearbooks have an index to students, but we have found some instances where they have failed to note his appearance in the index. Although a relatively large school -- approximately 350 students in Clinton's class, it would be difficult to assemble another set today. .

        The Wapshot Scandal

Harper & Row New York: Harper & Row. (1964). First. Uncorrected galley proof. Spiral bound cut galley sheets printed rectos only in publisher's wrappers with a printed information sheet attached to the front wrap. Spirals have broken, and pages are thus disbound, poor. Signed by John Cheever. A very unusual format, the long galley sheets have been cut and in a few places pieced together with tape. The second and final of the Wapshot novels, which are similar in tone and format to Faulkner's Yoknapatawpha trilogy. The first book, The Wapshot Chronicle, won a National Book Award. Rare. We've never seen another copy in this format, and certainly not signed. .

[circa 1964]. Typed manuscript. 16pp. Single sheets typed rectos only, stapled at the corner with some wear to the corners, a spot on the first sheet and oxidation marks on the rear, near fine.         Mao zhuxi yulu [Chinese, i.e., Quotations of Chairman Mao]

[n.p., probably Beijing: Central Intelligence Bureau of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, May, 1964] First edition, distinguishable from other editions by its slightly larger paper size, by containing thirty chapters and ending at page 250. . In the earliest binding of off-white paper wrappers with front cover printed in black and red, and spine printed in red. . Sixteenmo, with the page size measuring 5 3/8: x 4." . 2 [half-title printed in red with blank verso], [2, title printed in green and red with blank verso], [2, portrait of Mao in brown tones, with blank verso], [2, endorsement leaf by Lin Biao with blank verso], 2 (letterpress introduction), 2 (table of contents, listing 30 chapters), 250 pp. The endorsement leaf is in the earliest state, with the misprint in the second character down of the second vertical row from the right. (See Oliver Han Lei, "How Read is the Little Red Book, in the Antiquarian Book Review, November 2003). Very minor soiling. Ink notation on half-title in Chinese characters. An exceptionally fine copy. This copy contains the Lin Biao's endorsement leaf, with three sentences for the diary of Lei Feng, printed letterpress in calligraphic script. The endorsement leaf is lacking in most copies because of political circumstances. Lin Biao, head of National Defense, had risen in power within the Mao hierarchy and was designated to become Mao's successor. However, rumors surfaced that Lin was planning to assassinate Mao. While never completely proven, they caused Lin to suddenly leave on a military transport for an undisclosed location when their plane was shot down in Mongolia on the evening of September 12, 1971. Subsequently, Mao attempted to eradicate his name from modern history, and the endorsement leaf was ordered to be torn out or defaced in all copies as a sign of loyalty to Mao. Therefore, copies with the endorsement leaf are uncommon, and copies with the endorsement leaf in the first state even scarcer.
