A PRESIDENT'S COUNTRY: A GUIDE TO THE HILL COUNTRY OF TEXAS

Austin: The Alcalde Press, (1964). First Edition. Hardcover. Corners with gold-plated protectors added. Rubbing of leather at the head of the spine. Very Good or better and quite scarce in this presentation binding. One of a very small but unkown number of copies bound in full red leather with a gilt decoration of a saddle on the front cover and gilt lettering on the spine. Illustrated with drawings by Mac Tatchell and photographs; 80 pages. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the President on the title page: "To Dorothy Nichols/with love--/Lyndon B. Johnson." Dorothy Nichols was a personal secretary and assistant to Johnson from the time he was a freshman congressman until the end of his presidency. She was the first female assistant Johnson hired. They were so close that Johnson gave her away at her wedding and included her in his will. Books genuinely signed by LBJ are quite scarce, and most of those are copies of THE VANTAGE POINT, usually signed on a bookplate and sometimes on a tipped-in page as issued by The First Edition Circle. Association copies, such as this, are extremely difficult to come by.

        THE PROFESSIONAL: LYNDON B. JOHNSON

Houghton Mifflin Company (1964), Boston - Fourth Printing. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the subject on the front endpaper: "To all my friends/the Lawrence Kleins/from their friend/Lyndon B Johnson." Books genuinely signed by LBJ are quite scarce, this one most especially. I have personally examined more than 50 "signed" copies of this title, and ALL were secretarially signed "with best wishes." The book seems to have been given to various donors and VIPs with this secretarial signature. This particular copy has a more personal inscription. At first thought, one would expect Klein to be the Nobel Prize economist who was one of Jimmy Carter's chief economic advisers; however, he is much more likely the foreman who was in charge of the complete renovation of the Johnson Texas ranch and who attended the same Junction School as LBJ. Slightly cocked. Very Good or better in a price-clipped, Very Good dustwrapper [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

THE LAST ANALYSIS. HOLOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT OF SAUL BELLOW'S ONLY PLAY

      - An undated early holograph version of Saul Bellow's only full-length play contained in a ledger-type notebook (8-1/4" x 11-3/8") with marbled paper boards and a black cloth spine. Bellow has subtitled this as "A Work in Progress." Acts I and II of this version are complete in 71 pages with 4 pages of preliminary material for an Act III, all handwritten by Bellow. The 1964 staged version was reduced to two acts. Bellow appears to have written out Acts I & II as a fair copy from previous versions and notes in preparation for completing the play with a new Act III. There are relatively few insertions and corrections in his text of the first two acts which take up about 75% of the notebook. The third act consists mostly of blank pages with 3 pages of rough notes and key speeches including what seem to be the climactic lines of his main character, the comedian Bummidge, who has been undergoing an obsessive self-analysis in the previous acts: "The world was never real for me. But now I see it's more real than I was. I never admitted that it existed. It always knew I was here (he goes around picking up objects & kissing them because they're real). Now what is the theory. Not Momma's womb but my own empty heart?" Laid in to the notebook is a SIGNED typed 12-page fragment of an earlier version of the play, with Bellow's original title, THE CRASH PROGRAM, crossed out in ink and his new title, THE LAST ANALYSIS, written over it. Bellow manuscripts of this size and importance are seldom offered with most already housed in institutional collections. Near Fine and quite exceptional [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

El Mochuelo Gallery, Santa Barbara, CA 1964 - The first printing of one of 1,500 copies; published in 1964 as Monograph Number One be El Mochuelo Gallery. A near fine copy of the book marred only by the inevitable glue browning to the pastedowns/endpapers. Slipcase near fine with some rubbing to the bottom edge. This copy has been inscribed by Harry Callahan ' For Kate ' ( Kate Franks, a former protege of Callahan's at the Rhode Island School of Design. ) An uncommon title, particularly signed or inscribed.
