American Wood Type 1828-1900. Volume I [all published]., Collected, Catalogued and Printed by Rob Roy Kelly.

Kelly, Kansas City, Missouri, 1964. - 17 1/2 x 22 1/2. Book of 12 pages printed in three columns on tan paper, in comb binding of printed orange wraps. Plus 97 broadside specimens of the wood types. All laid into a cloth solander box. Mild fading and a bit of wear to box. Contents fine. No. 4 of 45 signed copies. Beautifully printed (no easy task with wood type) by Kelly on a hand press, mostly in black with a bit of red, and some decorative pieces. In his text, Kelly describes each specimen, giving as much information as possible about the each type--its name, type of cut, manufacturer, first showing, source of design, missing components. An extraordinary visual history of American wood types, with a huge range of examples. There are only two auction records for this in the last 45 years. A rare specimen, with almost all copies (at least 32 copies) held in institutions. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

        HARRY CALLAHAN: PHOTOGRAPHS

(CALLAHAN, HARRY). Callahan, Harry. Foreword by Hugo Weber. HARRY CALLAHAN: PHOTOGRAPHS. Santa Barbara, CA: El Mochuelo Gallery, 1964. First Edition 1/1500. Small Folio. Gilt-Stamped Cloth in Slipcase. Photography Monograph. Near Fine/No Jacket - As Issued. np, 126 duotone plates. With a bibliography by Bernard Karpel. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. Published in a stated edition of fifteen hundred copies, this exquisite 1964 Harry Callahan monograph is notoriously scarce as it has been widely reported that only half of these were actually ever bound for sale. A tight and bright, most handsome example (cited on pages 202-203 of The Hasselblad Center's "The Open Book", page 160 of "From Fair to Fine: 20th Century Photography Books That Matter", and pages 168-169 of "The Book of 101 Books") marred only by the typical browning of the glue binding the endpapers to the boards - as is the case with every copy that we've ever handled - in a well-preserved, lightly-scuffed slipcase. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its weight and value - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase.         Complete Set All 3 Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Adventure No. 1, 2, 3, w/Dust Jackets - All First Printings High Grade

Jonathan Cape (U.K.) 1964 - IAN FLEMING and JOHN BURNINGHAM (illustrator) - CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG ADVENTURE Number 1, 2, and 3, published by UK publisher Jonathan Cape, copyright 1964-1965, All 3 books are First Printing (4 line text block at bottom of copyright pages with no references to reprinting - the 2nd and 3rd printings of these books had 5 lines of text with a reprinting reference), green & black illustrated endpapers, illustrated boards (boards have the same illustration as the dust jackets), John Burningham illustrated DJ, 10s 6d net prices on No. 1 & 2 (No. 3 has been price clipped) and no ISBN # to rear flap - confirming that the DJs are all 1st state DJs. IAN FLEMING WROTE THIS STORY WHILE RECOVERING FROM HIS FIRST HEART ATTACK. BECAUSE IT WAS GOING TO TAKE THE ILLUSTRATOR A WHILE TO DO ALL OF THE ILLUSTRATIONS, THE UK PUBLISHER JONATHAN CAPE DECIDED TO PUBLISH THE STORY IN 3 SEPARATE VOLUMES OVER 1964-1965 (FLEMING DIED BEFORE THE 3RD VOLUME WAS PUBLISHED). AFTER 1968, THE 3 UK VOLUMES WERE COMBINED INTO ONE BOOK SO THE THREE SEPARATE BOOKS ARE THE TRUE '1ST EDITION" OF THIS STORY. Books all appear unread with no creased page corners, no former ownership markings or used bookstore stamps inside (common to find with these children's books), no markings or erasures to the endpapers, foxing to top outer board/page edge to #1 book only otherwise no foxing to outer page edges, no age darkening or dust soiling to outer page edges which are still white, no spine tears (these books had a very flimsy "floating cardboard spine that was only attached to the boards by very thin paper - as a result these UK Chitty books are often found with damages/torn/missing spines), no wear to board edges or spine tips, hint of wear to couple of board corners, no soiling or staining or scotch tape marks to the boards, no dust handling/soiling to boards (hint of soiling/shelf rubbing at exposed edges only), no bumped board corners of note. Dust Jackets are all very nice - No. 1 has tiny bit of loss at bottom left corner on front panel (just to right of bottom spine) and No. 2 has tiny bit of paper loss at top spine tip (no lettering affected), three tiny short closed nick tears at top edge (2 on No. 1, 1 on No. 2) otherwise no chipping, tearing or creasing (these fragile DJs are notorious for being found with either considerable chipping and/or tearing to them), almost no wear to spine tips with just a couple of 'v' losses to occasional spine corners, no wear to front flap creases, almost no edge wear, no color rubbing to panels, all 3 dust jackets have clean top/bottom edges (when manufactured the glossy overcoat applied by the publisher did not extend all the way to the top/bottom of the paper - as a result these DJ are ALWAYS found with very "dirty" top/bottom edges), almost no dust rubbing to panels, no soiling or staining, NO SUN AGE YELLOWING TO SPINES (another common defect with these particularly UK dust jackets), no foxing spots. Overall a very nice set of FINE-/N-FINE books in VG+ to N-FINE condition dust jackets (only 1 is price clipped) of an Ian Fleming 1st printing set of 3 hardcovers - the only children's book he ever wrote and the basis for the Dick Van Dyke movie of the same name. I have a number of other U.S. and U.K. Ian Fleming James Bond 1st printing hardcover appearances up for sale. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        If Morning Ever Comes

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1964. First Edition. Cloth & Boards. Very Good+/Near Fine in Mylar Cover. An important First Edition (so stated) of Anne Tyler's first book, signed by the author who was only 22 years old when she wrote this first book. In grey and black cloth and boards and grey dustjacket. The book is quite clean and bright inside but there are two pinprick-size blemishes on the top edge, the top edges is light pink (very slightly faded perhaps), there is light fading around the edges of the front cover and a narrow top strip of fading on the back cover top and fore-edges. The dustjacket is wonderful, complete and quite stiff still; the price of $4.95 is intact and the date "10/64" appears on the bottom of the front flap. A lovely copy by an important author. By the author of "Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant," "Saint Maybe," "Breathing Lessons," and "The Accidental Tourist."

[Op. 37]. Toccata alla Giga for Organ... Op. 37. Autograph musical manuscript

1964. First performed at Almudena Cathedral, Madrid, in July 1964. A Welsh composer, Hoddinott "graduated from University College, Cardiff, in 1949 and also studied privately in London with Arthur Benjamin... After being awarded the DMus in 1960 he consolidated his position as one of the leading British composers of his generation and in 1967 became professor of music at Cardiff... Hoddinott was particularly conscious that, he not being a pianist, his music did not derive from the Austro-Germanic sonata tradition but rather from the forms and textures of the Italian Baroque (his heritage as a violinist)... Hoddinott followed Bartók... in favouring arch-like structures in which a strongly propelled dramatic curve governs the unfolding of the movement as a whole... His approach, however, never involved the Schoenbergian abandonment of tonality, which remains a cohesive force throughout Hoddinott's output." Geraint Lewis in Grove Music Online.. Folio (360 x 265 mm). Signature of three bifolia. No watermark. Notated in black ink on 24-stave paper. [i] (title), 7, [iii] (blank), [i] (unidentified sketch) pp. A fair copy. Systems have 3 staves throughout. Dated "July 1964" at lower right corner of final page of music. Slightly worn and soiled; upper outer corner slightly bumped; occasional small stains; some leaves frayed at edges.

He wrote three books under the pen-name "Oswald Frederick" including a quiz book, Fight Quiz (1946), and two boxer biographies, Battling Bruce: The Fighting Career and Rise to Fame of Bruce Woodcock (1946) and White Hope: The Story of the Jack Johnson Era (1947).Needing more secure employment, Snelling took a job in the antiquarian book trade, working first as a clerk at Hodgson's in 1949, later Sotheby's Rare Book Department, and became Chief Clerk until the firm was closed in 1981. It was there he met author Ian Fleming, assisting him in research for the James Bond novels. Snelling is best known for his 1964 analysis of the James Bond books, Double O Seven, James Bond, A Report, the only such title personally authorized by Ian Fleming. Part of the book’s initial success was that its publication roughly coincided with the death of Fleming in August 1964 and included footnotes discussing the recently issued Bond novel, You Only Live Twice. Focused on the literary 007 with passing mentions of the first Sean Connery films, Snelling examined the predecessors to Bond, his adversaries, and especially the women in the novels. Knowing novelist Kingsley Amis was also working on a similar study (published as The James Bond Dossier in 1965), Snelling rushed out his book to compete with Amis, and the two titles have been frequently compared ever since as the earliest serious studies of the James Bond phenomena. Snelling’s title sold over a million copies, appeared in French, Dutch, Portuguese, Japanese, and Israeli editions and translations, and it came out in the United States in 1965 under the imprint of the New American Library, Ian Fleming's own publishers.Sam Joseph (1895-1985) was an antiquarian bookseller who together with his older brother Jack ran E. Joseph at 48a Charing Cross Road. Sam and Fred Snelling were good friends and shared a passion for Ian Fleming's James Bond novels. [Attributes: First Edition]

The Wine Dark Sea / Homer's Heroic Epic of the North Atlantic (INSCRIBED: THE PHILIP JOSE FARMER COPY)

Self-published, Chicago, Illinois 1964 - Patent attorney Mertz, who earlier published an account ("Pale Ink") of the voyages of the Chinese to the west coast of the Americas, here offers geographic evidence that the Odyssey described by Homer took Odysseus not just to the Straits of Messina (off Sicily), but as far as Newfoundland's Bay of Fundy. While further evidence of the Chinese voyages of the early 15th Century has indeed been forthcoming, Ms. Mertz's Homerian theory has not been widely embraced. Dated by the author "Chicago 5 April 1975," above which she has written "Inscribed especially for Philip Jose Farmer with best wishes / Henriette Mertz." Farmer (1918-2009) was best known as author of the "Riverworld" series; critic Leslie Fiedler compared him to Ray Bradbury, identifying both as "provincial American eccentrics" who "strain at the classic limits of the (science fiction) form," but found Farmer distinctive in that he "manages to be at once naive and sophisticated in his odd blending of theology, pornography, and adventure." 180 pp. including notes and bibliography. True First Edition with no statement of printing on the copyright page and the price $3.95 on the dust jacket. The book is in Fine condition and has a Very Good+ dust jacket. From Wikipedia: "In the summer of 1961, while camping in southern Idaho with his wife and daughter, Brautigan completed the novels A Confederate General From Big Sur and Trout Fishing in America. A Confederate General from Big Sur was his first published novel and met with little critical or commercial success. But when Trout Fishing in America was published in 1967, Brautigan was catapulted to international fame. Literary critics labeled him the writer most representative of the emerging countercultural youth-movement of the late 1960s, even though he was said to be contemptuous of hippies. Trout Fishing in America has sold over 4 million copies worldwide." .

[Op.
