S. NAIPAUL on the title page where Naipaul also has lined through his printed name; Naipaul's fifth novel, the first of his novels to deal with English characters in an English scene. (Naipaul's prior novels were set in his native West Indies.) V. S. Naipaul won the 2001 Nobel Prize in Literature "for having united perceptive narrative and incorruptible scrutiny in works that compel us to see the presence of suppressed histories". Signed copies are quite uncommon to the market. A nice copy of this early Naipaul novel, SIGNED BY V. S. NAIPAUL.

      Beverly Hills, CA: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer [MGM], 1964. Draft script for the 1965 film, based on the 1948 novel by Evelyn Waugh, legendarily co-written by Terry Southern and Christopher Isherwood. Deluxe working script belonging to uncredited crew member William Todd Mason, with his name and phone number in holograph ink on the title page, and some brief penciled notations on three pages. Laid in is a corner stitched, three page Staff and Crew list, with two name additions in holograph red ink on the second page. Included is a vintage single weight studio still photograph from the film. An early draft, issued nearly two years prior to the film's October 1965 release, with substantial differences from the finished film. The sister film to "Dr. Strangelove," and in the eyes of many, just as much a masterpiece of exquisitely wrought black humor. Made in the US, but in a dense, British-American style. Ostensibly a satire on the funeral business, in which a young British poet winds up in a Hollywood cemetery as part of an inheritance arrangement--but in reality a satire of Hollywood itself, as well as the Western malaise of the mid 1960s. Script: no wrapper, presumably as this draft was issued. Title page present, rubber stamped copy No. 70, dated July 21, 1964, with credits for screenwriters Southern and Isherwood. 158 leaves, mimeograph, with blue revision pages throughout, dated 7-22-64. Pages Fine, wrapper Fine, bound with two gold brads. Staff and Crew listing: two leaves, slightly worn, with notations on the second page.

Organisiert wurde die Aktion von Valdis Abolins und Tomas Schmit, die Programm & Dokumentations - Publikation wurde herausgegeben von Schmit und Vostell. Enthält 14 geklammerte, hektographierte Blätter und ein kartoniertes Titelblatt mit Dreifachwiederholung aller Fotos der Teilnehmer. Dieses wiederholt sich hier als Abschlußblatt noch einmal, hier mit den Fotos nach Innen ausgerichtet geheftet. Mit einem \"Vivograph\" von Tomas Schmitt, einer kleinen Blaupausenzeichnung, eingelegt zwischen zwei Blatt Blaupause in blauem Briefumschlag, montiert auf Blatt 11 sowie dem eingehefteten \"OZUP-Bon\" von Ludwig Gosewitz nach Blatt 8. Beiliegend ein Flugblatt zu einer Aktion von Emmett Wiliams und Robert Filliou, die ihre rosaroten Ohrenpfropfen im Rahmen der Veranstaltung für 1 DM anbieten. Das als Happening geplante Festival musste nach einer Intervention des Rektors der TH Aachen als Gedenkfeier des 20. Juli Attentates umgedeutet werden. Durch diesen Eingriff, aber auch durch die von Seiten der Künstler erfolgte Proklamation des Aktionstages neugierig gestimmt, war das Audimax mit über 800 Gästen überbelegt. Schon während der ersten Aktionen kam es zu Tumulten, die so weit eskalierten, das nur ein Teil der geplanten Aktionen ausgeführt werden konnten. Während der Aktion von Joseph Beuys wurde diesem von einem zornigen Studenten der TH die Nase blutig geschlagen - er bezog diese Störung und ihre Folgen in die Aktion mit ein und brach nicht ab. Dies war allerdings noch nicht der Grund für den endgültigen Abbruch - der erfolgte, nachdem Vostell gelben Farbstaub aufwirbelte, der das Luftfiltersystem des Audimax verstopfte. Allerdings war nicht allein die diffuse Zusammensetzung des Publikums aus Architekten, Maschinenbauern und Fluxusfreunden Anlaß für die kontinuierlichen Unterbrechungen; auch nicht in das Programm einbezogene Künstler wie Timm Ullrichs und Franz Erhard Walther sorgten im Vorfeld und während der Aktionen für Störungen. Young was a central figure throughout the 1960s NYC music and literary scenes. He founded the Folklore Center, produced Dylan's first concert in 1961 (Dylan even wrote a song for/about him, "Talking Folklore Center"), and was close to Sanders, helping to print several titles from from his Fuck You Press on the mimeo machine at the Center, this title included. An excellent association and a superior example of this uncommon Fuck You Press title, published in association with City Light Books. Hard to imagine a better copy. [FUG YOU pp. 12-13].       Athens: Vassily Papachrysanthou, 1964. Original offset lithograph poem poster, untitled. SIGNED as called for by Ford on the bottom margin. As with most of Ford's poem posters, this screenprint is unique in terms of color scheme, based on a single print design, with an indeterminate number of each issued. Brother to actress and model Ruth Ford and Russian painter Pavel Tchelitchew's parter, Charles Henri Ford was an overlooked artistic polymath of his own. With film critic Parker Tyler, Ford co-authored "The Young and Evil" (1933) one of the earliest landmarks of twentieth century gay literature. He published his first book of poetry in 1938, "The Garden of Disorder," and contributed to anthologies, such as "New Directions" (1940), in the following years. He served as editor of the art magazine "View" and was a prolific photographer of the New York art world. All his interests and work culminated in a series layered offset-lithograph collages. Created in very limited runs at Vassily Papachrysanthou's workshop in Athens, these compositions combine lines of Ford's poetry with photography, often portraiture, and geometric patterns, with colors varying between prints. First exhibited at New York's Cordier & Ekstrom Gallery, the show became the subject of Ford's 1967 documentary film "Poem Posters," and featured in numerous gallery exhibitions since including Charles Henri Ford Printed Matter 1929-1969 at Ubu Gallery in 1999 and Charles Henri Ford at Between Bridges in 2007. 27.5 x 39.5 inches.         The Cool World (Original one sheet poster for the 1964 film)

      Denver, CO: Wiseman Film Productions, 1964. Original one sheet poster for the 1964 film. Only one style of the poster is known to have been issued for its initial release. A seminal film from many points of view. The second feature to be directed by Shirley Clarke, one of the few women to direct a film in the 1960s. Clarke's goal was to make a non-judgmental film that resisted the moralizing prevalent in Hollywood "social issue" films. It was the first film to be produced by Frederick Wiseman, who would go on to become a legendary documentary filmmaker, and was scored by noted jazz composer and pianist Mal Waldron, with performances by Dizzy Gillespie. "The Cool World" was the first American independent film to be screened at the Venice International Film Festival. Clarke studied under Hans Richter, and became part of a circle in Greenwich Village that included Maya Deren, Stan Brakhage, and Jonas Mekas. After founding the now-legendary Filmmakers Cooperative, she made a series of short films and documentaries. Her feature film debut was "The Connection," based on a play, concerning the lives of a group of heroin-addicted, small-time jazz musicians. "The Connection" became the director's "test case" in what was ultimately a victory against New York state's censorship rules. Importantly too, both "The Connection" and "The Cool World" were statements on the limitations of cinema verité, and while appearing improvisational, were in fact semi-documentaries with carefully scripted dialogue. 27 x 41 inches (105 x 89 cm), folded as issued.         Second New York Film Festival (Original Poster, inscribed to Amos Vogel)

Original lithograph designed by Saul Bass for the Second New York Film Festival, held at Lincoln Center on September 14-26, 1964. INSCRIBED at the bottom right by Bass to Film Festival founder Amos Vogel: "to Amos Vogel : from Saul Bass." The New York Film Festival was founded in 1963 by Amos Vogel and Richard Roud, and to this day serves as a major taste-maker for American cinephiles, bringing the best films from around the world by directors established, new, and forgotten. The 1964 festival began with Grigori Kozintsev's "Hamlet," concluded with Satyajit Ray's "The Big City," and featured Bunuel's "L'Age d'or" as it's retrospective feature. As influential and forward-thinking as the festival is, it is matched by its iconic poster designs. Developed by Vera List, a New York City art collector and philanthropist, the poster program commissioned some the most famous artist of the day to design posters that would function as much as art as advertisement. In addition to Saul Bass, artists who have designed posters for the festival include Larry Rivers, Bruce Conner, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Richard Avedon, Robert Rauschenberg, and Cindy Sherman. Amos Vogel (1921-2012) was one of the most influential cineastes in New York City. He is best known for his bestselling book "Film as a Subversive Art" (1974) and as the founder of the New York City avantgarde ciné-club Cinema 16 (1947-1963), where he was the first programmer to present films by Roman Polanski, John Cassavetes, Nagisa Oshima, Jacques Rivette and Alain Resnais as well as early and important screenings by American avant-gardists of the time like Stan Brakhage, Maya Deren, James Broughton, Kenneth Anger, Sidney Peterson, Bruce Conner, Carmen D'Avino and many others. In 1963, together with Richard Roud, he founded the New York Film Festival, and served as its program director until 1968. In 1973, Vogel started the Annenberg Cinematheque at the University of Pennsylvania and was eventually given a Chair for film studies at the Annenberg School for Communication, where he taught and lectured for two decades. Ross was editor of the London Magazine, which printed Cyril Connolly's cross-dressing spoof, "Bond Strikes Camp."
