        Tokyo. Preface by Maurice Pinguet

Crown Publishers, 1964. In - 4° (355x260mm), pp. 184 interamente illustrate con fotografie in b.n. di William Klein. Legatura editoriale t. tela con sovraccoperta nera con ideogramma in rosso. Perfetto stato. Prima edizione. "Here is Tokyo. Not Tokyo for the tourist or Tokyo or travel posters, but everyday Tokyo in all its contradictions, discords, beauty, and appeal" (dal risvolto di sovraccoperta). "Like Hokusai, William Klein has created a Manga--a sudden throng of images, faces, streets, crowds, and attitudes, intense and confused, where the past merges with the future in an uproar of appearances. All are instantaneously caught, still moving, alive, and gesturing" (Maurice Pinguet). "William Klein's lasting legacy to photography will be his four city books: New York (1956), Rome (1959), Tokyo and Moscow (both 1964)....Tokyo is my favourite, not least because it sees Klein returning to the city whose photographic culture he helped to revolutionize. In 1964 Tokyo was the most populous city on earth and the world's media were about to descend to cover the Olympic Games. Three years later James Bond arrived in You Only Live Twice, sealing a popular iconography for Tokyo that barely seems to have changed. Klein's assessment of the city incorporates every Tokyo cliché but in pushing them to breaking point it soars above them too.......After New York and Rome Klein increased his page size so that when you open up the full - bleed double spreads of Tokyo they are more than half a metre wide. With those dense, complex compositions in your lap you feel like you're up close to a huge mural, not a page...this is where Klein is at his best, achieving the most powerful effects with the most unlikely material. I've no idea why he was in attendance at a meeting of an agricultural committee or how he got so close to the ceiling but his shot through a chandelier of bored bureaucrats in session is such a photographic joy. It is difficult to look at it and not imagine Klein muttering to himself: 'Jeeeesus this is boring! What can I do here? Ah, a chandelier! '.......Of all his books it is Tokyo I take down from the shelf most often. It's so rich, so relentlessly inventive that I can never remember it all and find myself constantly surprised. It was published in New York and Tokyo. I've no idea how Tokyo received it. No doubt it was measured against the experience of those who lived there. For the rest who saw it in 1964 I imagine it was seductive, bewildering, breathless, cacophonous, grotesque, gorgeous, informative and very intelligent. It is still."         Reminiscences

MacGraw-Hill, 1964 Signed Limited edition, #1628 of 1750. Original Slipcase. "Written in his own hand, and finished only weeks before his death, Reminiscences by General Douglas MacArthur spans more than half a century of modern history. These pages show a man whose unique vantage point at the center of the stage enabled him to illuminate major controversies of our time, and whose views and ideas - never before published in full - are now bound to bring new and unexpected reappraisals to the conflicts in which he himself was the central figure. Douglas MacArthur served under eight presidents. He was honored as few men have been. His genius for command, and his ability to implement that command by strategy, stand as landmarks in military history. No man was ever so outspoken in his commitment to his troops or in his beliefs. A legend in his own lifetime, he was a man who aroused controversy, yet stood above the awe and the conflicts he inspired. Never before has one soldier's life so completely reflected a nation's military history. After graduation from West Point with the highest average ever achieved by a cadet, MacArthur served in Vera Cruz during the Mexican uprisings and then as military attache in the Far East, where he first perceived Japanese aspirations for hegemony the Orient. His courage in the trenches and his leadership of the famous Rainbow Division during the First World War were cited by General Pershing, who seven times awarded MacArthur the Silver Star." Published in the year of his death. With color frontispiece photographic portrait and 20 plates of photographic illustrations, four in color. Fine condition. The pages are clean. Appears to be unread. Original Slipcase in fine condition.

Typed Letter Signed, with Vim and Vigor

1964. May 15, 1964. Hall of Famer Musial ("Stan the Man") played baseball for the St. Louis Cardinals from 1941 to 1963 (minus one year in the Navy); in February, 1964, he began a three-year term as Consultant to the President on Physical Fitness, under President Lyndon Johnson. This (form) letter, written on White House stationery, addressed to the Public Relations Director of the L.A. Dodgers, and signed by Musial as "Stan," asks for help, "since we don't have funds for advertising" in publicizing "two new books -- Vim for girls, Vigor for boys -- which explain how important [exercise] can be to their future." Included here are copies of Vim and Vigor, "A Complete Exercise Plan for Girls/Boys 12 to 18." [Washington, D.C.: President's Council on Physical Fitness, 1964]. Each is 24 pages, leading off with a Presidential Message from Johnson and concluding with a message from President Kennedy "prepared especially for this book in November, 1963." The 50+ year old advice is surprisingly current, and the advice across the two genders is surprisingly balanced. The letter is fine; the booklets are very good (Vim) and near fine (Vigor) in stapled wrappers. An example of the youthful President Kennedy's foresight in his emphasis on physical fitness, and the subsequent President taking up the mantle to continue his effort with the help of one of the athletic superstars of the day. First Edition. No Binding.

Original Poster for the SF Dancers' Workshop Super Jam

[SF]: [SF Dancers' Workshop], [ca. 1964]. 8.5 by 14 inches [22 x 36 cm]. Offset printed red on green stock. Light horizontal fold to middle, some toning to edges, else a very good example. "Printed by the Neighborhood Arts Program/ S.F. Art Commission" vertically along right edge. No examples located in OCLC and in our experience any non sound recording material related to the Tape Center is scarce. When the San Francisco Tape Music Center moved to its most significant location at 321 Divisadero in 1963, cofounder Morton Subotnick invited dancer Anna Halprin to move her Dancers' Workshop into extra space at the center. "It was no accident that Halprin shared the Divisadero space, since she used Tape Music Center Composers and they used her and her dancers." Halprin says of the arrangement: "It was a wonderful time for a kind of Bauhaus type of experimentation by multidisciplinary artists working together. As a matter of fact, that word 'multidisciplinary art" was really invented during that period." Founded in 1962, The San Francisco Tape Music Center (later the Mills College Tape Music Center) was at the forefront of experimental electronic music on the West Coast. The Center grew out of an improvised music studio created by composers Ramon Sender, Terry Riley, Pauline Oliveros, and others. The original mission was to form a "nonprofit cultural and educational corporation, the aim of which was to present concerts and offer a place to learn about work within the tape music medium." The mission later expanded to include electronic pieces that could be performed live with light projections and interactive tape systems. In 1966 the center moved to Mills College, where it was renamed the Center for Contemporary Music with a roster of students and faculty that was (and continues to be) a Who's Who of the musical avant-garde including Steve Reich, Anthony Braxton, and Iannas Xenakis.  Refs.: Thomas Holmes.
