CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY (with signed hand written association letter by Dahl)

Alfred A. Knopf 1964 - First Edition, First State with a EARLY AUTOGRAPHED AND SIGNED LETTER by Roald Dahl . An extraordinary example of this title. Near fine, crisp clean copy with 6 line colophon located on the last page in the ¿About The Author¿ Section with a near fine dust jacket. Accompanied by a large signed letter addressed to ¿Blanche¿, a close associate and friend who Dahl corresponded with on a regular basis, and who was the owner of Campbell¿s Bookstore in Los Angeles. The letter, signed by Roald Dahl as ¿Roald¿, is dated ¿15 June 1973¿, with him exuberantly congratulating her on turning fifty. A beautiful crisp example of this title with vibrant red cloth boards with an embossed title image to front. Strong unfaded Gilt titles to spine. The boards are in clean condition with sharp corners, one very slight bump, and no edgewear. The binding is tight and square. The mustard colored end papers are in perfect clean condition with no inscriptions, no bookstore stamps and no owner names. The rear end paper has a small pale stain. The internal pages still maintain their rigidity, and are crisp, bright, and flat, and extremely clean for this title. The book has no writing, no marks, no scribbles, no stains, no bent pages, no age toning and no foxing. Beautiful copy of a children¿s book in hard to find clean condition, internally appearing as unread! Accompanied by a very scarce autographed letter on letterhead of ¿Gypsy house, Great Missenden, Buckinghamshire¿, 8¿ x 10¿. Penned entirely in the hand of Roald Dahl to Blanche Campbell. At some earlier point, Roald Dahl visited the Campbell¿s shop in Los Angeles and he and Blanche developed a friendship. Many authors visited the Campbell bookstore which specialized in children¿s books, during its long and successful run. Dahl¿s warm playful letter to Blanche notes his best wishes for her birthday stating ¿I honestly did not believe that either of you was old enough to have gotten that far ¿ send my very warmest congratulations to you and your husband, and to lament the fact that I cannot be present myself on the great day. Yours Roald¿. Included is the original hand autographed mailing envelope , both in near fine condition. Gypsy House in Great Missenden was home to the late, great Roald Dahl and provided the inspiration for many of his stories. The gardens of Gypsy house permeated with that certain Dahlian magic that is so familiar to anyone who has grown up with his books. The original first edition, first state dust jacket benefited from a very tiny touch of restoration to one spine tip, and presents in near fine condition. The dust jacket is bright with vibrant colors with no ISBN to the rear panel as required for the first state of this title. The jacket has strong vibrant colors with no stains, no rips, no chips, no edgewear, and no foxing. The jacket is NOT price clipped and has a stated price of $3.95. A lovely stunning jacket! Please see images A very handsome, incredibly clean copy of this title with a wonderful scarce very early autographed and signed association letter. A fantastic set that presents well on the shelf! The sheer success of this title has made finding a copy in internally unread condition virtually impossible to locate! ADDITIONAL IMAGES AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST.         The Milk Train Doesn't Stop Here Anymore [First State]

Fine, fresh, bright copy (lower board edges very lightly rubbed); about Fine jacket (three short closed tears to back panel). From the collection of bibliophile Donald Kaufmann. Crandell A27.I.a1. Williams's allegorical coming-of-death play, set in Italy and centering on a dying, wealthy woman, Mrs. Flora Goforth. Written after the death of the playwright's father, in 1957, which sent Williams into psychoanalysis, and that of his longtime companion, Frank Merlo, in 1963, which plunged him into despair. "By the late 1950s, he had become dependent on alcohol and drugs in order to keep writing, and would refer to the 1960s as his 'Stoned Age,' which would end with several month's confinement in a psychiatric ward. But keep writing he did, and prolifically, in a kind of Beckettian determination always to go on." (Literary Encyclopedia) In 1968, Williams adapted the play into the film Boom!, costarring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, and directed by Joseph Losey. N. B.         Lancaster - the Story of a Famous Bomber

1964 - Illustrations by W.F. Hepworth after drawings by J.D. Carrick. First edition. 4to., cloth, pictorial dust jacket. Letchworth, Harleyford Publications. Tippedon to the front pastedown a printed slip 'This book is the property of', followed by a small printed fragment reading 'Derek Mason', 'Serial number 240 Autographed by' followed by the autographs of Bruce Robertson, W.F. Hepworth, J.D. Carrick, D.G. Russell (responsible for the production of the book), and Barnes Wallis. Loosely inserted a brief TLS on BAC notepaper, dated 27th April 1971, from Wallis to Derek Mason, commercial pilot and aviation collector, explaining where he has signed two books, including this copy. Bookplate of Mason to the front pastedown. Barnes Wallis was obsessed by engineering from a young age, his first experience of aviation being with the design and manufacture of airships, especially the famous R100. At the outbreak of the Second World War he was convinced that the quickest way to defeat the Nazis was to attack their industrial base, and came up with the idea of a 'bouncing bomb', a concept which made him world famous when 617 Squadron destroyed some of the Ruhr dams. There is still debate today as to whether the result made any difference to the length of the war, and Walliswas bitterly upset by the loss of life of many of the aircrew in the raid. He also designed the Wellington Bomber, a staunch workhorse in the early years of the war, and devastating bombs known as 'Tallboy' and ?Grand Slam', which were designed to penetrate the immense concrete U-Boat pens and armament factories of the Nazis. After the war he led aeronautical research and design at the British Aircraft Corporation, where he did much work on the concept of swing-wing or variable geometry fighter aircraft.       Fleet Publishing Corporation, 1964, First printing. Condition: Good only in a good dustjacket (bumped at several corners, also bumped and dented at bottom center of front cover - hard enough to have created a short split in the board; jacket is price-clipped and has several ragged tears and associated creasing along the bottom edge of the front panel, along with internal tape repairs.. SIGNED by the book's subject with his birth name, "Cassius Clay" -- a rare signature and especially so in this rather hard-to-find book, the first published biography of the great heavyweight champion. Issued later in the same year in which Clay took the heavyweight crown away from Sonny Liston (in their February 1964 bout), the book includes an account of the turbulent months that followed -- including the new champ's relationship with Malcolm X and his conversion to Islam, the controversy over his draft status, his much-publicized trip to Africa, and his suspension by the World Boxing Association (in effect as the book ends), which delayed his rematch with Liston until May 1965. Illustrated with photographs. Includes his professional boxing record. 116 pp.

The Loved One (Original screenplay for the 1965 film, copy belonging to screenwriter Charles Eastman)

Culver City, CA: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer [MGM] / Filmways, 1964. Early draft script for the 1965 film. Though unmarked, this copy belonged to uncredited screenwriter Charles Eastman. From the estate of Carole and Charles Eastman.Based on the 1948 novel by Evelyn Waugh, legendarily co-written by Terry Southern and Christopher Isherwood. The sister film to "Dr. Strangelove," and in the eyes of many, just as much a masterpiece of exquisitely wrought black humor. Made in the US, but in a dense, British-American style. Ostensibly a satire on the funeral business, in which a young British poet winds up in a Hollywood cemetery as part of an inheritance arrangement--but in reality a satire of Hollywood itself, as well as the Western malaise of the mid 1960s.Red titled wrappers, dated Jan. 26, 1962. Title page not present, presumably as issued. 130 leaves, with last leaf of text numbered 130. Mimeograph. Pages Fine, wrapper Near Fine, bound with three gold brads.

The Loved One (Original screenplay for the 1965 film, copy belonging to screenwriter Charles Eastman)

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer [MGM] / Filmways, Culver City, CA 1964 - Early draft script for the 1965 film. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Intrepid Magazine (Complete Run of 41 Issues in 22 Volumes)

Intrepid Press, New York 1964 - Complete run of Allen De Loach's small press poetry magzine / newsletter. 41 issues in 22 volumes. Varying softbound formats. Issue #1 co-edited by Will Inman. The magazine was published somewhat erratically starting bravely in 1964 and running through 1980. The editor's statement in the first issue reads as follows: "The purpose of this newsletter is to exist as a microphone for established poets to express views of the relevant nature of living and growing and to allow young poets a similar chance. Its second purpose is to extend the presence of American poets to the mind's eye of people who would not otherwise come in contact with the creative works of the American voice. This is not a competitive newsletter but a supplement to periodicals, such as FUCK YOU, FLOATING BEAR, and YOWL, that are doing an excellent job of blasting dogmatisms. Guts, vision, awareness, compassion. Can we learn the strengths, the depths, the resilience, of our guts by practicing to be intrepid? letting a little vision waken, awareness deepen, compassion sperm us to the quick? Let's try!" All issues in very good or better condition. De Loach's vision was wide-ranging and he included poets from all walks of life: beats, black mountaineers, east coast troublemakers etc. His front cover trademark (which ran beginning with issue #5) was a calligraphic image provided by artist Brion Gysin. Paul Blackburn, Gary Snyder, Diane DiPrima, John Wieners, Ted Berrigan, Tuli Kupferberg, Carl Solomon, Herbert Huncke and Phil Whalen were among the numerous contributors. Two of the issues were stand-alone poetry chapbooks. The final three volumes were published much later than the first 24 and were printed in smaller paperbound formats. The final volume has been inscribed by De Loach. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Washington, DC: Government Printing Office, 1964. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Complete in 26 volumes. First edition.
