Sylvia Plath
First American edition, first printing, published by Knopf (New York, 1962). Book condition: about near fine, boards are bright and sharp but with a couple lightly bumped corners, one board corner rubbed through but not frayed. Red topstain looks great. Some pencil erasure on the front pastedown/endpaper with a bit of a rough spot. Bright, square, tight and clean throughout. Dust jacket condition: about near fine, light edgewear with a few isolated nicks to edges, a bit of wear and only minimal loss to head of spine. Some offset toning to rear panel, and lastly a discreet short closed tear to top of front panel. Far better than the sum of its minor flaws, and a very bright example in collectible condition. Price of $4.00 is present on front flap, and jacket is protected in a removable mylar sleeve. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

J D Salinger
1962. Salinger, J.D. Famous American Author. Typed Letter Signed by "Jerry" with accompanying, unpublished draft for the dust jacket for Raise High the Roofbeams, Carpenter and Seymour: An Introduction. The draft was typed by Salinger and includes a correction in his hand. The letter is dated Sept. 9, 1962. Salinger writes to his agent Ned Kelly about two upcoming publications, as well as his discomfort with fame. $18,500. Although Salinger was preparing for the publication of his final anthology about the Glass Family, He writes a letter to his agent and mentions his first book The Catcher in the Rye and the iconic portrait by Lotte Jacobi for the first edition jacket of Catcher. Salinger writes to Kelly: "When The Catcher in the Rye was on the fire, Little-Brown paid for some pictures of me taken by a woman named Lotte Jacobi." Before Catcher was published, the young author was still unknown. Salinger's fame exploded after publication, and he soon found he had become too recognizable a figure to continue living in New York City and maintain any semblance of privacy. He moved to rural Cornish, New Hampshire, but he was still pursued by media and fans. Salinger resented this violation of his privacy and in this letter refers to his fans and the press as "the snoops, the exploiters, the privacy strippers, not to mention the Passionate Few who simply drop by to talk shop or to leave a few beer bottles in the mail-box." In 1950, Lotte Jacobi photo was printed large, across the back cover of the first two printings of the First Edition of The Catcher in the Rye, and becam … [Click Below for Full Description]

Rachel Carson
Rachel Carson "Silent Spring." Houghton Mifflin Co: Boston, 1962. Rachel L Carson pushed for policies related to environmental preservation and human health protection. Signed "Rachel Carson" on half title page. Carson began her career at the U.S. Bureau of fisheries, and went on to write several books on environmental issues; she made the greatest impact with "Silent Spring." Through this book, Carson combined research studies with activism to advocate for and protect the environment and the humans living in it. Her book, which exposed the dangers of DDT and other pesticides, led to new legislation regulating how and what kinds of chemicals could be introduced into the environment. This resulted in the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Very good condition with light bumping at corner. Gild title and spine. With a very good dust jacket. An important book for the history of environmental activism.

Kelley, William Melvin
New York: Doubleday and Company, 1962. First Edition. First edition, first printing. Signed by William Melvin Kelley on the front free endpaper with a lengthy, very personal inscription to former owner in the year of publication, "6/14/62 For Liz:-- You must know, Skinny, that I'm pulling for you, that I wish you success in all things that you decide to do. All that you can wish or hope for is that the people you love get a little lucky, that they make the right guesses and choices. I'm sorry that's all I can give you. Love, [signed] Kelley." Kelley didn't sign many books. [xii], 223 pp. Original cloth, spine lettered in black. Near Fine with a little wear to head, very slight lean, endpapers slightly foxed, pages toned, in a Very Good+ unclipped dust jacket with rubbing along its edges, hint of soiling, wear at extremities. The African American author's acclaimed debut novel. After early success he became forgotten and all his work was out-of-print for many years; he was dubbed "The Lost Giant of American Literature" in a 2018 New Yorker piece in the midst of a revival of interest in his work, following topical notoriety for having coined the term "woke." Rare as a first edition, let alone with such a powerful inscription. Near Fine / Very Good+. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; In Dust Jacket]

Paris: The Travellers Companion Series / The Olympia Press [October 1958]. With: Kenton, Maxwell [pseud]: LOLLIPOP. Paris: The Travellers Companion Series / The Olympia Press, 1962. Two volumes. Uniform pale green wrappers, printed in black. Spine of first volume slightly sunned and a trace rolled, otherwise about fine. Second volume a bit sunned at spine with small sharp bump above the final 'P', lower forecorner slightly bumped, final two leaves have a faint tide-mark in the extreme lower forecorner, otherwise very good and bright. The first volume is the first edition, first printing, published as TC 64. After the French court condemned this title (along with sixteen others) in May of 1959, some sets of sheets were equipped with variant cancel prelims and distributed under the title LOLLIPOP. The original text was then reprinted in 1962, retaining the LOLLIPOP guise and continued designation as TC No. 64, as represented by the second volume present here, which has been signed by Terry Southern on the title-page. The price on the rear wrapper of the first edition retains the original price of 1200 Francs, but has a faint erased stroke through it. Among the most successful of the many satirical romps of its generation written for hire for Maurice Girodias, often by post-war American expatriates, and the source for one of the least successful film adaptations of the next decade.
