Etching on paper, 1962/64, signed and numbered E.A. from the edition of 60, printed by Atelier Georges Leblanc, Paris, published by Galleria Schwarz, Milan, 25.2 x 19.2 cm. Wayne Thiebaud started his career painting commercially and he has been affiliated to both the Pop Art movement and the Photo Realist movement. Payne, David John
Greenwich CT: Gold Medal Books (d1222). Near Fine. 1962. First American Edition. Softcover. [nice tight copy, just a bit of edgewear to covers]. Mass Market PB (B&W photographs) A rare piece of Royal Familyana -- "The book the Royal Family banned in England!" screams the cover blurb, and that isn't far wrong. The author had served for about a year (basically most of 1959) as one of Her Royal Highness's footmen -- and it was quite a year, during which (as all viewers of "The Crown" know) the Princess met and romanced her eventual husband, Antony Armstrong-Jones. (Alas, Payne tendered his resignation at the very beginning of 1960, some months before the couple married -- even, in fact, before the announcement of their engagement, in February -- and therefore wasn't witness to the preparations for the big event.) Anyway, about nine months or so after leaving the Royals' employ (purportedly due to dissatisfaction with his $16-a-week salary) he decided to cash in on his former proximity to the "Madcap Princess" by writing a memoir of what it was like being at her beck and call. In today's world we deal with a regular flood of these "I was tight with a celebrity!" tell-alls as a matter of course, and mostly greet them with a big ho-hum -- but in the early 1960s, and especially in England (where the laws, not to mention the conventions, were considerably stricter about this sort of thing), it just wasn't done. Payne had already put himself on the Royals' radar for having given interviews regarding his service, but the memoir itself was apparently a drawbridge … [Click Below for Full Description]

WALCOTT, Derek.
London: Jonathan Cape, 1962. London: Jonathan Cape,, 1962. His first collection published outside of the Caribbean, inscribed to his publisher Octavo. Original green patterned paper-covered sides, white backstrip, titles to spine in gilt. With the dust jacket. A fine copy. First edition, first impression. Presentation copy to the publisher, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Tom Maschler, gratefully, Derek Walcott, Oct 9 64". This was the copy of Tom Maschler, the publisher, with his bookplate to front pastedown. Maschler joined Jonathan Cape as editorial director, aged 26, in 1960, and became managing director in 1966. In 1962 he was searching for new talent and Alan Ross, the editor of The London Magazine, suggested Walcott. Maschler later wrote of the decision to publish Walcott that "while I did know that Derek was a very important poet, I didn't know then just how important he would be... but I did like the book enormously" (Wroe, The Guardian). In a Green Night became Walcott's first collection of poetry to be published outside the Caribbean, and he went on to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1992. Maschler had a particular genius for bringing world-class writers from Abroad (such as Neruda and Garcia Marquez) to publish in the UK, and overall 15 of his authors were awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. Wroe, Nicholas, "The laureate of St Lucia", The Guardian (2000).

SIGNED! Art Of Pitching, Lloyd "Chick" Davies (Pageant Press 1962) 1st Edition 1st printing. Book in fine condition. Dust jacket only fair to good. Rare. The tome of baseball, the art of pitching the ball, and pitchers in general as they relate to the game of Major League Baseball. This example is quite rare. Have only seen one or two examples, even unsigned anywhere. Not listed in the OCLC WorldCat, but does appear to have been copyrighted in 1962, and Pageant Press is listed on credit page as publisher. Perhaps this one had a very low print run, or was left undistributed due to cost/interest. Hardcover with red linen cloth backed boards. Front, spine, and rear cover are exceptionally unmarred; but does have bumps foot and crown with some slight discoloration in these areas. Spine tight, corners bumped only a little. Moderate foxing and staining on FF endpapers, but interior block has only intermittent spotting/foxing. Pages are generally off-white, and structurally pretty clean-- straight corners and no noticed creasing, folding, or tearing. Several pages have underlines in ink, margin lines, and list of numbers on one page in ink. Else quite neat. The foxing is most severe on the endpapers in front, most likely due to acidic boards used at time of manufacture. Dust jacket included, but only in good condition. As you can see from the photos, the dj is worn, foxed, and faded on spine, foxed front and rear, and has numerous edge defects. No major tears or folds, which is nice. Has been backed with a high-cotton backer to preserve its integrity. Front cover presents nicer, a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Kesey, Ken
Viking, 1962. First state book and dust jacket with all issue points. Near-fine with slight bump at top of front board, otherwise clean and tight. In a very good dust jacket with two pieces of clear tape along top edge of reverse repairing closed tears. Some sunning to spine and light rubbing to spine ends and corners. Faint impression in center of front panel of dust jacket (which slightly carries over to the front board)--appears at some point someone was doodling on a piece of paper on top of the book. INSCRIBED BY KESEY on the flyleaf, "For Further Times Away, Ken Kesey," referencing an upcoming trip on his famous bus. Included are the commemorative 3-D sticker and glasses that were distributed at the event where he signed the book. This 1999 event in Eugene, Oregon served as the ceremonial launch of Kesey's "GrandFurther" bus tour of the UK in which Kesey and some of the other Merry Pranksters (including Ken Babbs) drove the bus to San Francisco. From there it was shipped to London where it was met by Kesey and the Pranksters for a trip to a town in Cornwall to watch the last solar eclipse of the millennium (Kesey passed away about two years later). A wonderful association copy thus, now housed in a clamshell case. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

Title: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum Script Dated: 1962 -Description- This is an original 1962 Broadway Play Script titled, "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" which was used in the production of the actual play. THIS SCRIPT IS NOT FOR THE MOVIE, IT IS FOR THE BROADWAY PLAY. This is not like all of the other playbills and play books you see, this is the actual script used during the production of the play . This Play Script is a total of 105 pages long, with 69 pages for Act 1 and 36 pages for Act 2. This Broadway production opened on May 8, 1962, at the Alvin Theatre, and then transferred to the Mark Hellinger Theatre and the Majestic Theatre, where the show closed on August 29, 1964, after 964 performances. This rare script is in fair condition with some obvious cosmetic issues. There is some heavy wearing to the outer production cover. The outer cover has some tears around the edges and mainly on the spine. I'm not sure if the hand writing inside was from 1962, this script may have been used by other actors at later dates. Furthermore, this is an original script from the 1962 Broadway Production. Please view all of the pictures above carefully. BARZUN, Henri Martin
Liberal Press, New York, 1962. First edition. Quarto. Printed perfectbound wrappers. A little wear to the wrappers and spine a little tanned, else about fine. Inscribed by the author: "For Professor Howard Nitzberg with best wishes for his Ph.D. dissertation with my compliments. H.M. Barzun. New Rochelle, N.Y. June 1966." Laid in is a two-page mimeographed overview of Orphic Art, based on Barzun's work, but of unknown origin, perhaps written by Nitzberg. Barzun, the father of author and polymath Jacques Barzun, was a poet, and one of a number of French modernists who came to New York City right before and during the first World War, among them Marcel Duchamp, Francis Picabia and his wife Gabrielle Buffet, Arthur Cravan, Albert Gleizes and his wife Julliette Roche; painters Jean and Yvonne Crotti; and writer Henri-Pierre Roché. They joined painter Joseph Stella, harpist Carlos Salzedo, and others including Alfred Stieglitz, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Man Ray, forming a community of modern artists who made New York the new center of the art world. William Faulkner
Random House, 1962. The binding is sound, tight and square. Internally also clean and fresh with AUTHOR'S SIGNATURE DIRECTLY TO TITLE PAGE WITHOUT FURTHER INSCRIPTION. Boston: Little, Brown & Company, 1962. Near fine condition.Dj virtually fine all around. Text also fine with this exception: Very top of outside front and back boards has a very thin reddish line which appears to be slight imprint of book next to it on the shelf. Otherwise, this book appears to never have been opened. (see photos). James Clavell's first book is a novel based on his experiences in a World War II Japanese prison camp. I met him at his temporary office at Paramount Pictures when The SHOGUN mini-series was breaking TV records and the novel, his third, was #1 on NY Times Bestseller List. He pulled out a bottle of Johnnie Walker Black Label scotch and we got drunk, during which time he told me stories of the camp and life. 1962. 406 pgs. RARE. Harper & Row, New York. The uncommon 1962 true 1st ed. of Maurice Sendak's beloved and tiny boxed 4 vol. set. All 4 vols. in a uniform pink cloth and including the off-white band on the bottom of the dustjacket of "Chicken Soup with Rice". CARSON, Rachel
Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1962. Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company,, 1962. The book that ignited the environmental movement Octavo. Original green cloth, spine and front board lettered in gilt, green wavy-patterned endpapers, top edge yellow. With the dust jacket. Bookseller's ticket, Bart's Books of Ojai CA, to rear pastedown. Spine slightly cocked, ends bruised, shallow knock to top edge of front board, very occasional mark to contents; jacket a little soiled with a few chips to spine ends. Overall a very good copy. First edition, first printing, of the book that ignited the environmental movement. Carson, a nature writer and Editor-in-Chief for the Fish & Wildlife service, had long been concerned about the widespread use of DDT and other pesticides, but lack of interest from magazine publishers led her to put aside her idea for an exposé. When the book finally appeared in 1962, only a year before her death, its great strength was not in presenting new information - most of the data she included was already known to the scientific community - but in making the information accessible to non-scientists and instilling a sense of fear and urgency in the public. Not only an indictment of DDT, her book challenged the very foundations of post-war modernity and western capitalism, and forced humans to reconsider their relationship to the world around them.

1DR, Virginia, Alabama, Louisiana, Missouri, Kentucky, Texas, Tennessee, Michigan, Georgia, Mexico, 1962. Quarto measuring 9" x 6". 53pp. Brown stiff paper boards with "Personal Trip Diary" written on the front cover. Approximately 2000 words handwritten. Light edgewear else fine. A woman's handwritten travel diary during her trips around the South Western parts of the United States and Mexico in April for the years 1961 and 1962. During her first trip, the woman travels alone to several different places in the mid and south west of the United States including Virginia, Alabama, Louisiana, Missouri, Kentucky, Texas, Tennessee, Michigan, Georgia, and Mexico. She occasionally writes the amount of miles traveled in one day, sometimes driving up to 12 hours and 500 miles straight. The woman visits college campuses, diners, and hotels, but doesn't spend much time in each place often heading on the road a few hours later, "This country is big at times to the point of monotony. Mile after mile maybe flat, crude, or cultivated, yet it is fascinating". The woman doesn't state where she is from but the first location written is from when she was driving through Virginia during a cold frost. This contrasts with her eventual destination, Mexico City which she writes about the heat several times. In Mexico City the woman visits her family and friends and spends her time "Drinking," "Shopping," and "Staying up all night". She writes about her drive home and picks up again during her trip the next year writing about taking a different route, "Mountains completely surrounding new route and … [Click Below for Full Description]

J.T. & Geo. B. Murphy Co, Columbus, Ohio, 1962. Sepia toned gelatin silver panoramic photograph. Approximately 40.5" x 10". Captioned in white in the negative. Chip at the upper left corner confined to the margin, else about fine. Currently shrinkwrapped onto a backer board. A fantastically amusing panoramic photo that displays approximately 400 students and faculty members of the famously progressive College (including co-eds and black students), many in outlandish outfits or holding what would seem to be early 1960s protest or other signs, which display both college humor and similar hijinks, but some others with political or sociological ramifications. Among the signs or tableau: a student dressed as Jesus hangs from a cross with other students holding a sign that reads: "He Took The 5th"; a group of young women with Russian-style fur hats hold a sign that reads: "Be the 1st in Your Hall to Join an Antioch Commune"; A series of students holding a string of about a dozen signs that read serially as: "The Rising Tide of American Fascism is Reflected in the Unrestricted Growth of Facial Hair on Small Midwestern Liberal Arts Campuses - Burma Shave"; another: "No-One Dies A Virgin"; another of a goateed stick figure is labeled "Martyr Forker"; women holding a sign that says "The Hardy Chapter of the Birch John Society. We'll Wipe Antioch Clean"; in the background "Cuba Si - Virgin No"; and of course, the always reliable "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?"
