Typed letter signed ("Bertrand Russell") with an autograph correction.

Penrhyndeudraeth, 4. XII. 1962. - 4to. ½ p. To his friend and colleague, the physical chemist Professor Mansel Morris Davies (1913-95) in Aberystwyth: "[.] I am sorry that it is not likely I shall be able to accept your invitation, because I am, at the moment, so overwhelmed with commitments in the work against nuclear war that I have taken on, and in projects such that I will [corrected to: shall] be obliged to reject many invitations I should wish to accept. I shall keep your invitation in mind, and should it be possible for me to accept it I shall inform you [.]" - An eminent historian and philosopher of science, Davies taught at Aberystwyth from 1947 to 1977. His obituary described him as "a passionate crusader for social and political justice, a lifelong militant pacifist, a Pugwash participant, a committed humanist with strong leanings towards Buddhism, a prolific author and letter writer, a discriminating collector, a riveting anecdotalist, a man of omnivorous literary, musical and scientific tastes". - Traces of folds and of scotch tape along edges of upper left corner. On Russell's stationery with printed Plas Penrhyn letterhead (watermarked "Papyrus Regia").

        In The Clearing

New York: Holt, Reinhart, and Winston, 1962 Limited edition of 1,500. Signed by Frost on the limitation page. Publisher's brown cloth, with black spine label lettered in gilt, printed on laid paper; housed in publisher's black slipcase. Near fine, with just a touch of faint soiling and a hint of toning to the spine, some very minor offsetting to the endpapers, else very bright and clean; slipcase with a few scuffs, else fine. A very fresh copy. Crane A41. In the Clearing is the last collection of the author's poetry that was published during his lifetime. Published when Frost was 88, In the Clearing includes poetry markedly different from his earlier writing; while his earlier poetry was largely concerned with nature and the environment, many of Frost's later poems are focused on philosophies about human nature. Specifically, it contains the poems: "America is Hard to See," "Peril of Hope," "Questioning Faces," and "Pod of the Milkweed," among others. Additionally, this volume includes "The Gift Outright," the poem which Frost wrote specifically for John F. Kennedy's 1961 presidential inauguration. During the inauguration ceremony, the aging poet fought against wind and sun glare to read his poem, ultimately choosing to abandon his script and recite the verse from memory.. Signed by Author. Limited.. Hard Cover. Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

        The Colossus and Other Poems

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1962. First Printing. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First American Edition (so stated) of the poet's first collection, published one year before her death (and two years after the London edition). Tall, slim 8vo: [xii],83,[5]pp. Publisher's finely woven emerald-green cloth, spine lettered in black, Plath's monogram in blind to upper cover, top edge stained red, fore-edge untrimmed; blue typographic dust jacket lettered in white, priced $4.00, with correct "0562" publisher's code bottom of front flap. Fine and apparently unread. In 1959, after a stay at the Yaddo writer's colony, Plath and her husband, the poet Ted Hughes, returned to London. The following year, their first child, Frieda, was born, and Plath published this first book of poetry. "Neglected in its own day and even in ours, [The Colossus] brims with important and powerful poems. . . . set[ting] forth most of Plath's characteristic concerns and styles. They express a confusion about women's roles in relation to male control, a sense of marginality and inner contradiction, a struggle with low self-esteem combined with egotism, a horror at historical catastrophe, a paranoid dread of the social and physical environment, and an overwhelming desire for poetic voice." (Literary Encyclopedia) Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.

[DRYSDALE]. Journey among men (with drawing)

London : Hodder & Stoughton, 1962. Quarto, cloth in illustrated dustjacket, 206 pp. illustrated throughout by Russell Drysdale. Inscribed by the artist in the year of publication on the first blank 'For Norma - Russell Drysdale September '62', with a full page ink drawing of a stockman drinking a beer with the quotation 'You know, Norma, its just a lot o' bull'. Drysdale and Marshall's great journey through the Australian outback is dotted with a variety of unique characters, each with a particularly dry Australian sense of humour. This fine copy of Journey among men is greatly enhanced by an original artwork, through which Drysdale's distinctive hand brings alive one of these characters on the page.

        A Wrinkle In Time

New York: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1962. First edition, eighth printing of the author's Newbery award-winning novel. Octavo, original half cloth. Warmly inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "For the Lindquists with a special thanks to my Cleveland Guardian angel: I will never forget your courtesy and kindness. You knew how to tesser before I ever wrote this! Madeleine L'Engle." The lengthiest inscription on A Wrinkle In Time that we have seen or handled. Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Jacket design by Ellen Raskin. At once a science fiction story, a philosophical meditation on the nature of Evil and Love and a coming-of-age novel, Wrinkle broke new ground in what was considered appropriate for young readers. Rejected by several publishers for being too complex, this title has amply proven L'Engle's belief that 'children are excited by new ideas' and has been credited with bringing science fiction into the mainstream of children's literature. This is L'Engle's best work" (Silvey, 401). A Wrinkle in Time is one of the most significant novels of our time. "A book that every person should read, a book that provides a road map for seeking knowledge and compassion even at the worst of times, a book to make the world a better place" (Cory Doctorow). It went on to win a Newbery Medal, Sequoyah Book Award, and Lewis Carroll Shelf Award, and was runner-up for the Hans Christian Andersen Award. It is the basis for the film directed by Ava DuVernay, starring Storm Reid, Reese Witherspoon, Zach Galifianakis, and Oprah Winfrey.
