London, Jonathan Cape, 1962 (first UK edition). Octavo; red papered boards, top edge green, with the second-state dustwrapper (unclipped, but the price has the original new bookseller's printed tape label over it, and this has offset very lightly onto the front flyeaf); essentially a very fine copy with the very fine dustwrapper.         DEAD CERT [ Autographed First Edition ]

London: Michael Joseph. Very Good+ in Very Good dust jacket. 1962. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. Autograph; AUTOGRAPHED on titlepage "Hi, XXXX, Dick Francis." The true First Edition (published in London) of Dick Francis' first thriller in what became a landmark series of horse racing mysteries. Burgundy cloth binding in pictorial dust wrapper. Binding has a very slightly lean, corners sharp, light offsetting to free endpapers where exposed beyond dustwrapper flaps (as usual), a very few faint spots of foxing to preliminary leaves, (the half title leaf and the last blank leaf and the rear free-endpaper). Dustwrapper design by Trevor Denning; price-clipped, some very modest edgewear with minor loss at spine ends and lower corners, mild toning to white background and some faint superficial staining to rear panel (see images). Entirely without any restoration or sophistication - a satisfying copy of one of the major high spots of twentieth century modern first editions, inscribed and signed at the center of the title page. Quite scarce, especially autographed.; Signed by Author; Experience the pleasure of reading and appreciating this actual printed item. It has its own physical history that imbues it with a character lacking in ephemeral electronic renderings. .

One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich].

Flegon Press London 1962 - Octavo (24.2 x 16 cm). 67 pp., original printed wrappers.; owner's neat highlighting in pen to first 8 pp., wrappers slightly soiled. Fine example of the rare first "pirate" edition published abroad. The plot of the Solzhenitsin's very first published novel is set in a Soviet labour camp in the 1950s and describes a single day of an ordinary prisoner, Ivan Denisovich Shukhov. After more than half a century since its publication the significance and influence of the deceptively simple story remains unsurpassed. The novel was specifically mentioned in the Nobel Prize presentation speech when the Nobel Committee awarded Solzhenitsyn the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1970. The novel first appeared in print in November 1962 in the Soviet literary magazine Noviy Mir (New World). It was an extraordinary event in Soviet literary history since never before had an account of Stalinist repression been openly distributed. The editor of Novy Mir, Aleksandr Tvardovskiy, wrote in a short introduction for the issue, titled "Instead of a Foreword": The author chose an ordinary day in the life of a labour camp prisoner from a reveille until lock up. Still, this "ordinary" day can't but touch the hearts of the readers and let them feel overwhelming sorrow and pain for the fate of the people, who become so close and familiar through the pages of this novel. Even though the characters are fictional the novel has a very personal feel. Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn (1918-2008) had first-hand experience of the Gulag, having been imprisoned from 1945 to 1953 for writing a derogatory comment in a letter to a fellow officer about the conduct of the war by Joseph Stalin, whom he called "the whiskered one".         Paul, the Hero of the Fire.

London: Constable & Company Limited,, [1962]. Original illustrations and layouts for the book. Pen and ink vignette title (measuring 290 x 215 mm), 20 pen and ink illustrations, 13 pen and ink and watercolour illustrations (3 double-page) by Ardizzone (each illustration signed "EA"), on 15 sheets (measuring 290 x 430 mm), numbered 1-30; accompanying letterpress cut and either taped or pasted in place. A few small colour splashes and some minor tape marks, general light signs of handling, a few marginal printer's annotations, one small section of letterpress lost from p. 3. In excellent condition; with first editions of both the 1948 and 1962 editions. A few small colour splashes and some minor tape marks, general light signs of handling, a few marginal printer's annotations. In excellent condition. Presented to the author-illustrator's godson, inscribed on the title page: "To Edward Booth-Clibborn, from Edward Ardizzone, with love". This is the mock-up for the 1962 Constable edition of one of Ardizzone's most delightful – and somewhat neglected – children's books. Paul, the Hero of the Fire was first published by Porpoise, a short-lived imprint of Penguin, in September 1948, and was illustrated solely in colour. For this edition of 1962, Ardizzone added a number of pen and ink illustrations in his trademark black and white, reworked all of the colour pictures and transformed some colour work into black and white; Ardizzone described it in his dedication as "a new version of an old story". Paul is very much in the line of Ardizzone's other books with a boy hero - the Little Tim series, of which Tim All Alone (1956) won the inaugural Kate Greenaway Medal, and Nicholas and the Fast-Moving Diesel (1947) – and involves the eponymous adventurer joining Higginson's Giant Circus and Fair to earn money to restore his family's fortunes; when there is a fire, he heroically leads the children to safety. To find such a book in its entirety is decidedly unusual. This is a typically charming and beguiling work by one of the great British illustrators of the 20th century, with words and pictures in both colour and black and white, the latter highlighting Ardizzone's "complete mastery of the drawn line" (ODNB).

        The Golden Notebook

London: Michael Joseph, 1962. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine-/Fine-. First Impression of the Nobel laureate's "indispensable" masterpiece, significant "as the most massive statement made, up to that time, on the position of woman in the modern world." (Burgess). Tall, thick 8vo: 568pp. Publisher's black boards, spine lettered in gilt; first-issue typographic dust jacket (photograph of Lessing to rear panel) designed by William Belcher, priced 30s. About Fine (dust-soiled edges, mild offsetting to end papers), square, tight, probably unread; about Fine jacket (lightly dust soiled back panel, several edge nicks), still vibrant and bright. Time 100. Burgess 99. p.86. NYPL Books of the Century, p.130. Callil and Toibin 52. "Anna Wulf is a writer who keeps four notebooks, each a different color, each reflecting a different part of her. The black one contains recollections of her youthful wartime years in West Africa . . . In the red one she reflects on her later life in London's leftist and intellectual circles. The blue notebook analyzes her fraught relations with men. The yellow contains her fragmentary attempts at new fiction. With the fifth, the golden notebook, and with The Golden Notebook, Wulf/Lessing struggles to tie all the threads fearlessly back together again. All the currents of her time flow through Anna-Marx and Freud and the burgeoning dissatisfactions among women that would eventually explode into feminism. Lessing's earnestness can be too much at times, but as a portrait of a woman coming to grips with the realities of her time her book is indispensable." (Time 100) N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves.         Red Flower Ball (3D)

      - offset lithograph, signed and numbered from the edition of 300, Publisher Kaikai Kiki Ltd., Tokyo. Takashi Murakami is a Japanese artist combining the fine and the commercial art worlds. Often categorized alongside artists working within the tradition of Pop Art, such as Andy Warhol, Damien Hirst, and Jeff Koons, Murakami's work has achieved a widespread level of fame beyond the art world. His innovative "Superflat" aesthetic—combining classical Japanese art with contemporary Japanese pop culture—has made him one of the most innovative artists working today. He continues to explore the links between traditional printmaking and Japanese styles of comics in post-war society in his highly graphic, vibrantly colored works. Despite its outward playfulness, Murakami's art acts as a cultural critique with subversive undertones hidden in its imagery. Born on February 1, 1962 in Tokyo, Japan, where he currently lives and works, Murakami has embraced commerce through the founding Kaikai Kiki Co., Ltd., an artist management agency and studio. With his popular collaboration with the fashion label Louis Vuitton, Murakami has established himself as a pioneer of promoting art as a brand. His work has been the subject of numerous exhibitions around the world, include those held at the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo, Gagosian Gallery in London, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, and the Versailles Palace.         Yam Festival Newspaper.

Yam Festival Press., Metuchen, NJ. 1962 - This copy inscribed by George Brecht in blue pen at the head of the newspaper: ÒH.J.D.: We would like to advertise Kalenderrolle in our 2nd issue. Is there anything special you would like us to say? George BrechtÓ. Edited and published by Brecht and Watts on the occasion of the Yam Festival Press, Metuchen, New Jersey, held at end of 1962, beginning of '63. Contains the text "Mirrors" by Kaprow, poems by Wakoski and Bloedow, advertisements for "An Anthology", for the Yamfest sign shop, BrechtÕs flags, etc. With a hole punched at the top of the sheet, as usual. ÕLike other Fluxus artists, Brecht and Watts relished the opportunity to publicise their activities. In the case of Yam Festival, a yearlong festival of exhibitions and performances that took place in New Jersey and New York, they did so widely and ingeniously. Yam Festival Newspaper represents one such effort. Instead of presenting information in a straightforward manner, however, the artists create an unruly collage of verbal and visual elements. Newspaper includes everything from poems, event scores, and advertisements for Fluxus-related publications to quotations, glossaries, "wanted" ads, crossword puzzles, and notices for drawing contests. Only some of this material is genuine; much of it is fictionalÕ. (From Princeton Art Museum website). Unfolded, (74 x 15.3 cm). Offset printing, black ink on pink paper stock, printed both sides.

[DRYSDALE]. Journey among men (with drawing)

London : Hodder & Stoughton, 1962. Quarto, cloth in illustrated dustjacket, 206 pp. illustrated throughout by Russell Drysdale. Inscribed by the artist in the year of publication on the first blank 'For Norma - Russell Drysdale September '62', with a full page ink drawing of a stockman drinking a beer with the quotation 'You know, Norma, its just a lot o' bull'. Drysdale and Marshall's great journey through the Australian outback is dotted with a variety of unique characters, each with a particularly dry Australian sense of humour. This fine copy of Journey among men is greatly enhanced by an original artwork, through which Drysdale's distinctive hand brings alive one of these characters on the page.
