Divagazioni sopra un'Allemanda di John Bull per Orch. [7 variazioni su un'Allemanda di John Bull] Autograph working musical manuscript in condensed score. Signed

48 pp. Folio (ca. 345 x 244 mm.). Unbound. Notated in both ink and pencil on 16-stave music manuscript paper. Heavily annotated with amendations and corrections throughout and including sketches and sections ultimately cancelled. Several movements dated by the composer at their conclusion, indicating that the work was written over a period of time extending from September (or earlier in 1962) to December of 1962 in Rome. Housed in a card folder with a presentation inscription from the composer's daughter Vittoria. With movements listed, together with performance times, to title as follows: "Tema - Allemanda del Duca di Brunswick (1:15), Balletto (.60), Passacaglia (2.42), Corrente (1.48), Siciliana (2.25), Gaglilarda (2.55), Sarabanda (3.50), Fanfara e Corale (5). The order of the movements has been revised, both on the title and within the manuscript. . An Italian composer, conductor and critic, Guerrini studied with both Torchi and Busoni at the Bologna Liceo Musicale, going on to direct the Florence Conservatory (1928–47), the Bologna Conservatory (1947–9), and the Conservatorio di S Cecilia (1950–60). "His earlier music combines high seriousness, at times somewhat academic, with luxuriant chromatic harmony reminiscent of Bax or, more significantly, Alfano. The textures and orchestration sometimes suggest Strauss, as does Guerrini’s interest, around 1920, in the symphonic poem; and there are indications, too, of Ravel's influence... The most substantial and imaginative of his early works is his second published work in the genre, L’ultimo viaggio d’Odisseo, which shows his harmony and orchestration at their most evocative. Also notable, in this early period, are the chamber compositions: the Violin Sonata is typical, combining succulent chromaticism with reiterative thematic developments. In time Guerrini’s academicism grew more pronounced, while his tendency to romantic indulgence was tempered by a new, architectonic sobriety. His best work after 1930 is in religious music: the gravely expressive Missa pro defunctis, though conservative, is free from the tiredness that mars much of Guerrini’s later output. On a different line of development, the Sette variazioni sopra una sarabanda di Corelli may, in their ingenious rethinking of material from the remoter past, reflect the influence of his teacher Busoni." Harper Row. Fine with no dust jacket. 1962, 1965. Prints. Children's; Commercial lithography ; Folio 13" - 23" tall; 4 pages; Four drawings taken from these titles: "Hector Protector," "Mr. Rabbit and the Lovely Present," and "Lullabies and Night Songs"Artist: Maurice SendakMedium: Commercial lithographyYear: 1965, 1962Dimensions: Unframed, prints measure approximately 13" x 17 1/2", 10 1/2" x 14" and 18 1/2" x 10"Details/Condition: Maurice Bernard Sendak (born June 10, 1928) is an American writer and illustrator of children's literature. He is best known for his book "Where the Wild Things Are," published in 1963. Sendak gained international acclaim after writing and illustrating "Where the Wild Things Are," a Caldecott Medal-winning picture book about a boy banished to his bedroom without his supper. He deals with his anger by imagining himself king of an island filled with enormous, frightening monsters. Critically acclaimed and controversial, Sendak is one of the first children's writers to deal frankly with the fears and anxieties of childhood. "Where the Wild Things Are" is the first in a trilogy, to be followed by "In the Night Kitchen" (1970) and "Outside over There" (1981) , which, in Sendak's words, are "all variations on the same theme: how children master various feelings--anger, boredom, fear, frustration, jealousy--and manage to come to grips with the realities of their lives." Mr. Sendak's original drawings are constantly in demand by museums, art galleries and collectors everywhere. Although most of his original work is archived at the Rosenbach Museum & Library in Philadelphia, his pictures are represented in many major collections around the world. It understates his importance to simply call him a genius in his field: he has been called "the Picasso of Children's Books", and for more than a half-century his work has been critically praised, admired and emulated. Retrospective exhibitions have been held at the Ashmolean Museum (Oxford, 1975) , the Pierpont Morgan library (New York, 1981) , the Indianapolis Museum of Art (1999) , the Brennan Jewish Heritage Museum in Atlanta (2001, a version of which went on national tour) , the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Books (November 2002) , Brandywine River Museum (2003) , and most recently a remarkable survey of his art at the Jewish Museum (New York, 2005) covering both his book work and sets/costumes for opera and ballet, subsequently extending the show to the Tampa Art Museum in Florida (2006). Red objects in the picture are positioning magnets. .

BACKGROUND: Asturias is a region in northern Spain where coal miners staged a series of work stoppages, protests and strikes [1860-1934] that are seen by historians as being at the epicenter of the labor movement that culminated in the Spanish Civil War. The first large nationwide strike in Spain since 1934 had its beginnings on April 7, 1962 with staged walkouts by coal miners in Asturias. After a series of unsuccessful attempts to put down the spreading strikes, the Franquist government acceded to the miner's demands May 24, 1962. Galvanized by the miners' actions, a manifesto supporting freedom was published, signed by many of Spain's leading intellectuals and in 1963 leading expatriate artists & writers decided to express their support and collaborate on the book, "Asturias". The title symbolized their determination to bear witness and many of the texts & illustrations refer to the region's history. These themes are extended by Alcalde in the original art he executed solely for this copy. Juan Alcalde (b. Madrid 1918) went into exile in Paris with the advent of the Spanish Civil War. In 1939 he immigrated to Venezuela, returning again to Paris in 1960. He has exhibited extensively in France and Venezuela. SIZE: As issued, 330 x 282 mm (12.99 x 11.1 inches). Title lettered on lower edge, wrappers somewhat worn and marked, modest use; a good copy. An unspecified, but likely quite early, draft of this adaptation to the screen of Gaddis's biography of Robert Stroud. The 3 July 1962 release, directed by John Frankenheimer, starred Burt Lancaster as Stroud, and a release running time of 147 minutes suggests that portions of this draft were cut in the revision process. An uncommon script for the multiple award-nominated film.

One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest

New York: The Viking Press, 1962., 1962. Publisher's striking green cloth with yellow titles to spine, hint of yellowing to top edge. In bright and clean dust wrapper with signs of some accomplished professional restoration, some fading to spine panel otherwise fresh, bright and clean. FIRST EDITION of the author's highly praised first novel. 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest was a direct product of Kesey's time working the graveyard shift as an orderly at a mental health facility in Menlo Park, California. Not only did he speak to the patients and witness the workings of the institution, he received electroconvulsive therapy and took psychoactive drugs (notably LSD, psilocybin, mescaline and DMT) as well as the same drugs as the patients as part of government-sponsored drug experiments. From this, he became sympathetic toward the patients and from then on garnered enough information to write a novel about mental illness and psychiatric health care and the effect of institutions upon the vulnerable individual.'

New York: Museum of Modern Art, 1962. Second Edition. Quarto. Cloth boards; dustjacket; 195pp. Author's presentation to Ben and Bernarda Shahn on front endpaper: "To Ben and Bernarda from Walker / in memory of a great deal (no pun)," dated May, 1962. Fine copy in very lightly dusted, unclipped jacket, Near Fine. & & A highly important association copy of one of the landmark photography collections of the twentieth century. Shahn's and Evans's friendship began in the summer of 1932, when the two collaborated on an exhibition of documentary paintings and photographs of a family of Cape Verdean blacks who, in their eyes, had been shamefully mistreated by members of Provincetown's artistic establishment. It was Shahn's first significant exploration of social themes in his painting, and marked an important turning point in his career, with the landmark Sacco and Vanzetti and Tom Mooney paintings to follow the next year. Shahn and Evans remained lifelong friends and collaborators; both accomplished much of their best work as photographers for the RA and FSA New Deal programs.
