Opera Aperta [Signed] [The Open Work] Forma E Interdeterminazione Nelle Poetiche Contemporanee

Milano: Bompini, 1962. First edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. A Near Fine copy of the first edition, first printing -- 1962 Casa Ed. Valentino Bompiani, Milano; Publisher's blindstamp to the title page as required (expected toning to the pages), in a Near Fine dust jacket (expected toning, small tear to the top of the front panel), SIGNED BY UMBERTO ECO on the title page; Umberto Eco’s groundbreaking work on semiotics which contributed greatly to an important new approach in contemporary semiotics, usually referred to as "interpretative semiotics". In this work, Eco argues that a literary text is best when it is a field of meaning which is internally dynamic and psychologically engaged (i.e. an "open" text), rather than a mere string of meaning that limits the reader's potential understanding to a single, unequivocal line (i.e. a "closed text"). Of the two types, the "open text" is thus the superior and most rewarding of the two, being active among mind, society, and life. Signed copies of the first edition are exceptionally difficult to find. The book played a notable role in Umberto Eco's relationship with his father. Of his father and Opera Aperta, Eco stated: "Well, he died very early, in 1962, but not before I had published a few books. It was academic stuff, and probably confusing to my father, but I discovered that very late in the evening he would try to read them. The Open Work was published exactly three months before his death and was reviewed by the great poet Eugenio Montale in the Corriere della Sera. It was a mixed review—curious, friendly, and nasty—but it was a review by Montale nonetheless and I think that, for my father, it would have been impossible to imagine anything more. In a sense, I paid my debt, and in the end, I feel I met all his wishes, though I imagine he would have read my novels with greater pleasure." A Near Fine copy of Umberto Eco's important and groundbreaking work, SIGNED BY UMBERTO ECO.

        Symmetries of Baryons and Mesons

Lancaster, PA: American Institute of Physics, 1962. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good. [2], 1130 pages. Light brown buckram binding with gilt spine lettering, bumped at head of spine. We offer the entire volume, Physical Review 125 Jan-Feb 1962. Ex-library, properly deaccessioned, with minor markings. This volume contains the article "Symmetries of Baryons and Mesons" by Murray Gell-Mann, found on pages 1067-1084. Gell-Mann was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1969 "for his contributions and discoveries concerning the classification of elementary particles and their interactions". This paper demonstrates the "introduction of SU(3) single-octet structure of the known mesons and octet-decuplet structure for the baryons. [and] predicts the Omega- Hyperon" There is one earlier introduction of these concepts, in a private institutional paper CTSL-20 which we've found no indication was printed separately, although it was reprinted in "The Eightfold Way: A Review" much later (1964). As such, this is the earliest obtainable and best work related to the Gell-Mann's Nobel Prize. See Ezhela, et al, pgs 181 and 186-7.

        Where Witchcraft Lives

London: The Aquarian Press,, 1962. Octavo. Original grey cloth, titles to spine in black. With the dust jacket. Letter inked to front pastedown. Some faint toning to boards, edges lightly rubbed and a little dulled, minor spotting to edges of text block. An excellent copy in the price-clipped and lightly rubbed and marked jacket with a closed tear to the lower panel. First edition, first impression of the first book by "the mother of modern pagan witchcraft" (ODNB). Doreen Valiente (1922–1999) became interested in the occult as a child, and was a practising clairvoyant by the time she was a teenager. In 1953, after reading an article on modern witchcraft, she joined Gerald Gardener's coven, and eventually became high priestess but left after the two had a falling-out in 1957, and ran her own coven until the early 1960s. In addition to serving as a leader of British neo-paganism, Valiente wrote "some of the major works of Wicca, including the enduring version of the most important, The Charge of the Goddess" (ODNB), and three other important books, "which established her as a public figure. In the first, An ABC of Witchcraft Past and Present (1973), she provided her own history of witchcraft; the second, Natural Magic (1975), was a handbook of practical magic; and the third, Witchcraft for Tomorrow (1978), was a book of ritual for witches who wished to set up their own covens" (ODNB). The present work is a survey of historical and contemporary witchcraft practices in Sussex, and is uncommon in the dust jacket.

New York: G. P. Putnam & Sons 1962, 1st Edition. () 239pp. Near fine in very good dust jacket. Octavo. Original black cloth with red lettering on front and spine. Clean boards with only light wear and mild bumping to ends of spine. Clean tight text block. Dust wrapper is lightly rubbed has a small amount of wear mainly at edges and folds and a light discolouration to inner edge of flap. This science fiction alternate history novel won a Hugo Award in 1963 and has since been translated into many languages. The work of Philip K Dick, a famous American novelist, short story writer and essayist, is almost entirely science fiction. It explores sociological, political and metaphysical themes in novels dominated by monopolistic corporations, authoritarian governments, and altered states. In his later works Dick's thematic focus strongly reflected his personal interest in metaphysics and theology. He often drew upon his own life experiences in addressing the nature of drug abuse, paranoia, schizophrenia, and transcendental experiences..

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest [Marbled and Signed by Kesey]

NY: Viking. (1962). Kesey's landmark first book, a pivotal novel of the literature of the Sixties, which helped to shape a generation's attitudes on issues of authority, power, madness and, finally, individuality. A uniquely decorated copy, fully marbled by Kesey on the front and back covers, spine, and page edges and signed "Kesey" in block colored letters on the front flyleaf. A year before Kesey died, a collector sent him a group of books asking him to sign them, and in particular for Cuckoo's Nest to do something "special." Kesey, who had been experimenting with marbling, and could not, one imagines, have missed the similarity between the bookish art and the psychedelic art of the 1960s counterculture that he had helped to create, marbled the entire book, on all sides. We only know of one other book he did this to: a paperback of the same title, for the same collector. This is the only clothbound book we know of that he treated this way, and it is a startling artifact, bearing virtually no traces of the familiar binding, but rather presenting a whorling, flowing image, predominantly in red, white and pink. Tape shadows to flyleaf; a very near fine, and unique, copy in a near fine, first issue (Kerouac blurb) dust jacket, with tape shadows to flaps, hairline cracks to the colors, but very little of the usual fading. Possibly the only such copy in existence. . First Edition. Hardcover.
