DE

The Birthday King, inscribed and with an extensive archive of correspondence with the author's favourite critic, Ben Evan Owen, 1958-72

      - The Birthday King. London: Hutchinson, 1962. Some light spotting of free endpapers; small (closed) tear in dustwrapper at top of front panel. Inscribed by the author, "Ben Evan Owen gratefully for his encouragement and patience from the beginning . . ."; signed additionally by him on the title-page; and with, loosely inserted, Owen's archive of correspondence from the author: 17 autograph letters signed (some stapled at the corner), six typed letters signed (some stapled at the corner, several aerogrammes, stamped and franked), and one autograph postcard signed (stamped and franked) (addressed variously "Dear Mr Owen", "My dear Evan", "My dear Ben", "Dearest Ben", signed "Gabriel Fielding", "Gabriel F", "Gabriel", "Alan Gabriel", "Alan"), together with one typed letter signed from the author's wife, Edwina Barnsley, with his autograph postscript signed: 85pp. 8vo &c, Maidstone, Buffalo and Pullman, November 1958-February [1972]. Alan Gabriel Barnsley (1916-1986) published his first novel, The Frog Prince and Other Poems, with the same press, the Hand and Flower Press, and in the same year, 1952, as his friend Muriel Spark published her first book of poems, The Fanfarlo and Other Verse. Hutchinson published his second book and first novel, Brotherly Love, under the pseudonym Gabriel Fielding, in 1954 - the year in which he and his wife, Edwina ("Dina"), were received into the Roman Catholic Church, as too was Spark, of whose first novel, The Comforters (1957), they were the co-dedicatees. Like Spark, he was encouraged in his early days by another Catholic convert, Graham Greene. A GP, Barnsley gave up medicine for literature in 1966 - by which time he had fallen out with Spark irrevocably. This is a revealing archive of one of the then "coming" Catholic writers. The Birthday King was the author's breakthrough novel, winner of the W.H. Smith Prize and the Thomas More Medal. "Following the publication of his novels in America," declares its dustwrapper blurb, "Gabriel Fielding has been increasingly noted as one of the most important of the contemporary English novelists. Time magazine has described him as 'one of the most skilful novelists at present writing in English.'" Three years later, Fielding would forsake his medical career on becoming author-in-residence for a year at Washington State University in Pullman; he carried on teaching there until his retirement in 1981. He first wrote to Owen after he reviewed Eight Days (1958) for The Oxford Mail - "You caught my purpose more accurately than anyone who has so far been interested in the book. I would love to know how you did it." He deplores the state of London reviewing: "I saw Muriel Spark on Monday," he writes (16 November 1960), "and she confirmed all you said about metropolitan criticism." As a sympathetic critic, Owen became a sort of perfect correspondent. On 15 February 1962, he again drops the name of Muriel Spark, who had reached a new height of fame with the publication of The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. They had first met in 1954, when Spark had taken refuge in Kent, at Aylesford Priory and then in a cottage by Allington Castle, both close to Maidstone, to work on The Comforters. "I[']ve been seeing a lot of our Muriel (Spark) who is Felicity's Godmother," he writes. "Do you read her books? I quaff them like a mackerel after whitebait - and have an unique signed collection." Hubris! A week later, on 22 February, he and Spark fell out irreparably. Fielding, as Spark's biographer Martin Stannard recounts, turned up unannounced in London to seek her advice on whether he should give up medicine for full-time writing. She was at the hairdresser's and told him to go away. Owen reviewed The Birthday King for The Oxford Mail: "For the first time in a decade of reviewing," he wrote, "I feel justified in prophesying that a new novel will be judged by posterity as one of the great books of our time." His quote went on the jacket of the US edition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        The Spy Who Loved Me

London: Jonathan Cape, 1962 First edition, first printing. Publisher's black cloth, spine lettered in silver, dagger illustration stamped to the front board in blind and silver; in the original dust jacket, designed by Richard Chopping. A fine copy, with a hint of wear to the spine ends, else in excellent condition; unclipped dust jacket, with a touch of toning to the spine, a few traces of light soiling, bright and fresh panels. A bright and attractive copy of the tenth 007 James Bond novel. The Spy Who Loved Me is a unique Bond novel, written from the point of view of the main character, Vivienne Michel. Michel narrates the text, beginning with her troubled childhood. A femme fatale in the making, she tries to escape her past by traveling down the Adirondacks, which leads her to the Dreamy Pines Motor Court. There, Michel agrees to mind the building, but quickly becomes the victim of a villainous plot to destroy both the motel and its caretaker. Interestingly, Bond does not appear until well into the second half of the novel, at which point he saves Michel and seduces her. The Spy Who Loved Me was an experiment for Fleming, who was "interested in this view of James Bond, through the wrong end of a telescope, so to speak." The novel was commercially unsuccessful, and, in response, Fleming asked Jonathan Cape to suppress any paperback editions, a request which the publisher honored during the author's lifetime. The subsequent 007 novel, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, returned to the classic Bond story format, as it was set in the Picardy resort where readers had first encountered 007 in Casino Royale. The 1977 film adaptation of The Spy Who Loved Me bears almost no resemblance to this text other than the title; the film tells the story of a reclusive megalomaniac named Karl Stromberg, who hijacks British and Russian submarines as part of his sinister plan to destroy the world and create a new underwater civilization.. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Dust Jacket Included. Illus. by Chopping, Richard.

        Fire on the Mountain

Dial|~| NY: Dial. 1962. The third novel by the author of Desert Solitaire and The Monkey Wrench Gang and his first book to deal explicitly with the ecological and environmental themes that dominated his later writings. Abbey's passionate and uncompromising writings in defense of the wilderness of the American West helped lay the groundwork for the activist environmental movement in the 1960s and since, encouraging the creation of such radical groups as Earth First! and helping to initiate the dialogue on "deep ecology" that defined much of the discussion in environmental circles. This is a fine copy in a fine dust jacket with the merest suggestion of rubbing at the corners and folds. One of the nicest copies we've ever seen of this book, which tends to rub and fade easily. .

        The Tin Drum

New York: Pantheon, 1962. First American edition. Octavo, original red cloth. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with light shelfwear to the spine. Inscribed by the author to poet Robert Lowell in a German inscription, translated into English, which reads: "To Robert Lowell, in admiration and in the hope to have the pleasure of meeting you soon in Berlin. Gunter Grass Berlin, Nov 3, 1966." Association copies of this caliber are rare, especially on what is considered his masterpiece. From the estate of Elizabeth Hardwick, novelist and wife of Robert Lowell. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. When Günter Grass published "The Tin Drum" in 1959 it was as if German literature had been granted a new beginning after decades of linguistic and moral destruction. Within the pages of this, his first novel, Grass recreated the lost world from which his creativity sprang, Danzig, his home town, as he remembered it from the years of his infancy before the catastrophe of war. Here he comes to grips with the enormous task of reviewing contemporary history by recalling the disavowed and the forgotten: the victims, losers and lies that people wanted to forget because they had once believed in them. At the same time the novel breaks the bounds of realism by having as its protagonist and narrator an infernal intelligence in the body of a three-year-old, a monster who overpowers the fellow human beings he approaches with the help of a toy drum. The unforgettable Oskar Matzerath is an intellectual whose critical approach is childishness, a one-man carnival, dadaism in action in everyday German provincial life just when this small world becomes involved in the insanity of the great world surrounding it. It is not too audacious to assume that "The Tin Drum" will become one of the enduring literary works of the 20th century" (The Swedish Academy).

        Crowds and Power

London: Victor Gollancz, 1962. First British edition. Octavo, original blue cloth. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper. An excellent copy in a very good dust jacket that shows some modest rubbing to the extremities. Elias Canetti was awarded the 1981 Nobel Prize in literature on the basis of this work, his masterpiece, Crowds and Power. Ranging from soccer crowds and political rallies to Bushmen and the pilgrimage to Mecca, Canetti exhaustively reviews the way crowds form, develop, and dissolve, using this taxonomy of mass movement as a key to the dynamics of social life. The style is abstract, erudite, and anecdotal, which makes Crowds and Power the sort of work that awes some readers with its profundity while irritating others with its elusiveness. Canetti loves to say something brilliant but counterintuitive, and then leave the reader to figure out both why he said it and whether it's really true" (Richard Farr).
