        BYE BYE BIRDIE (1st edition)

DBS Publications, New York 1962 - First Edition, Stated First Printing. Original 1st issue DJ with $4.50 price intact on the flap. DBS Publications 1962. 144 pages. This copy is square with sharp corners. Book would grade near fine if not for some staining to the orange cloth. DJ had a stain which seeped through the paper on to the bright orange cloth. Orange cloth with white lettering to spine. Orange topstain. Some rubbing to edges. Previous owners name written on FFEP. The rare DJ is not as nice as the book as there are flaws. Previous owners name and the number 2 is written on upper corner of the DJ. DJ shows evidence of staining as the color of the DJ is uneven. Spine of DJ shows some fading. 3 transparent pieces of scotch tape have reinforced the DJ , twice at the foot and crown of backstrip and one over a closed tear on the front. There is a smudge on the rear and some chipping at the edges/corners. This is overdisclosure. A very rare title in a rare DJ with the price intact. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[Original Black-And-White Photograph of William S. Burroughs and Antony Balch in the Beat Hotel, Paris]

[ca. 1962]. Near fine. Original vintage oversize double-weight silver gelatin photograph. 9 1/8" x 13 1/2". Near fine. Tikhomiroff's studio stamp to verso. Unpublished outtake from the photo session that would eventually be utilized for the Burroughs profile/NAKED LUNCH review that would appear in the Nov. 30th 1962 issue of Time magazine (here provided). This negative and unflattering piece ("King of the YADS"), eventually inspired Burroughs to utilize this issue in his early and important "cut-up," TIME (1965) for Ted Berrigan's "C" Press [Maynard and Mile A11]. Burroughs met Balch at the Beat Hotel in 1960 and thus began a decades-long collaboration. Balch frequently filmed Burroughs, from mundane activities (like buying a parrot in Morocco) to more theatrical (Burroughs in character as Dr. Benway). The two worked on several short films together, including TOWERS OPEN FIRE (1963), THE CUT UPS (1967), and BILL AND TONY (1972). Balch's experimental style heavily influenced Burroughs' own ideas about cut-ups and Balch is given special thanks by Burroughs in THE TICKET THAT EXPLODED. Balch followed Burroughs throughout the 60's, moving with him from Paris to New York and then to London, often even living in the same building. The two remained close throughout the 70's until Balch's premature death from stomach cancer in 1972. One of the earliest images, if not the earliest, of Burroughs with Balch, and one of only a small handful of photos we've seen of the Beat giant with one of his most important collaborators.

Typed Letter, Signed, 1962. With Additional Material Relating to the First SDS National Convention and the Drafting of the Port Huron Statement

New York: Students for a Democratic Society, 1962. Extremely early, foundational document of the SDS, announcing the group's first National Convention at Port Huron, Michigan in June of 1962. Undated, but circa March or April, 1962. The recipient is unknown, but SDS Chairman Robert Alan ("Al") Haber presumably sent such invitations to university students around the country who had been previously active in leftist political causes. The prospectus, titled What is the S.D.S.?,lays out a 5-part platform -- Civil Rights, Peace, Higher Education, Student Organization, and National Politics -- which would be reflected in the group's formal manifesto, The Port Huron Statement, some months later. The text of the prospectus is unsigned, but smacks strongly of the declarative, cadenced prose used by Tom Hayden in his final draft of the Statement. & & The convention Program provides an outline of daily sessions, concluding with "debate, amemdments, and voting" on the Manifesto, then states: "The manifesto draft will be mailed after June 1 to registrants and those requesting it. Copies of other convention papers will be mailed out or available at Port Huron..." This is possibly the earliest printed reference to The Port Huron Statement, the definitive political manifesto of the post-War era; it is also a tantalizing bit of evidence that early, unrecorded pre-publication drafts of the Statement may have been issued in some quantity prior to the convention. Neither letter, nor Program, nor Prospectus located in OCLC. Mimeographed form letter, extending an invitation to the first SDS National Convention, June 11-15, 1962. Signed in blue ink by SDS Chairman Robert A. Haber. Together with a one-page Convention Program, and a 5-pp prospectus titled "What is the S.D.S.?" (both mimeographed). Original folds for mailing, else Fine.

Zurich: Coron-Verlag, 1962. First edition. Hardcover. Fine. A Fine, Superior, copy of the first edition, first printing, SIGNED BY FRANS EEMIL SILLANPAA on the page facing his Portrait [Text in German]; a commemorative book published to honor Sillanpaa's having won the 1939 Nobel Prize in Literature "for his deep understanding of his country's peasantry and the exquisite art with which he has portrayed their way of life and their relationship with Nature." [The true first edition of this book, offered here, should not be confused with the later revised edition (1970), or with later printings of such revised edition, which are rather easily found.] The book contains a section on Sillanpaa's Life and Works written by Dr. Olof Enckell, then Chairman of the Literature Department at Helsinki University, as well as Sillanpaa's acceptance speech, praise of him by the Nobel committee, excerpts from 2 of his most well beloved novels and more. Illustrated with 10 full page color illustrations. Copies of the book in its true first edition, as offered here, are quite scarce. Although the book was not called to be signed, this copy was nevertheless signed by Sillanpaa, making it a rare copy indeed. As Sillanpaa died in 1964, this book may well have been one of the last books he signed. This copy of the book came from the Estate of renowned dancer and choreographer Martha Graham. A beautiful, Fine, Superior, copy of an exceedingly scarce book with a notable Provenance, SIGNED BY FRANS EEMIL SILLANPAA. Quite Beautiful and RARE INDEED.

ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST.

Viking Press (1962)., New York: - First edition of the AUTHOR'S FIRST BOOK. First issue, in the first issue dust jacket, SIGNED BY KESEY. A classic book made into a classic movie directed by Milos Foreman, starring Jack Nicholson, Louise Fletcher and Danny DeVito. The story evolved from Kesey's time working as an orderly at a mental health facility in Menlo Park, California. Not only did he speak to the patients and witness the workings of the institution, he took psychoactive drugs as part of a project. Time Magazine named the book one of the 100 Best English-language Novels from 1923 to 2005. The book is bright and fine with just a few tiny spots on cloth; in an equally bright dust jacket with expert restoration to several small chips and tears. A sharp copy of the first-issue book and jacket--which is getting scarcer signed. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

LARGE ARCHIVE OF TELEVISION TYPESCRIPTS, one SIGNED, with extensive corrections and annotations

1962 - 1963. Manuscript. Very Good to Near Fine. Exceptional and important collection of five television typescripts: "The Hollywood Story", "Goodbye Is for the Birds", "North Star", "Don't Blow Bugles (The Mafia Man)", and "Only the Young"; most represented in more than one copy and all written for "The Richard Boone Show" [ Boone was best known for starring in "Have Gun Will Travel"]. Some scripts are clean; other copies have extensive additions and deletions by Odets in ink with one script designated as a Work Copy and SIGNED by him. After completing much of the preliminary work for the series Odets died in August 1963. The latest script is dated 17 June 1963. The show was considered one of the best dramatic programs on the air (Robert Blake was in its repertory) but only survived for two seasons after the loss of its executive story editor. Odets gained fame in the 1930s for two plays: WAITING FOR LEFTY and AWAKE AND SING. Though he wrote other plays, including GOLDEN BOY and THE COUNTRY GIRL, he turned to Hollywood in the 1940s as both a writer and director (NONE BUT THE LONELY HEART, one of Cary Grant's best performances) and was investigated by Congress for Communist ties in the 1950s. He had numerous affairs with such actresses as Frances Farmer and Fay Wray. Odets was the inspiration for the title character in the Coen Brothers film BARTON FINK (1991). Extraordinary collection of early television scripts by one of its best early writers with the many corrections revealing much about the process of creating fine television drama.
