      Middletown: Wesleyan University Press (1962). 1st edition, full gray cloth, with illustrated dust jacket. Specially signed by Ashbery on the title page. The author's very scarce second trade publication of poems, issued in only 750 copies (Kermani A7) and considered by many collectors to be the most elusive of his trade publications. The present copy shows only the slightest signs of aging, primarily across the top and fore-edge of the paper. The cloth binding is very clean and bright, and the complete (not price clipped) jacket shows light sunning to the spine only. A most desirable copy, particularly in this condition and signed by the poet.

        Autograph working manuscript in condensed score of the Divagazioni sopra un'Allemanda di John Bull per Orch. [7 variazioni su un'Allemanda di John Bull], signed

      48 pp. Folio (ca. 345 x 244 mm.). Unbound. Notated in both ink and pencil on 16-stave music manuscript paper. Heavily annotated with amendations and corrections throughout and including sketches and sections ultimately cancelled. Several movements dated by the composer at their conclusion, indicating that the work was written over a period of time extending from September (or earlier in 1962) to December of 1962 in Rome. Housed in a card folder with a presentation inscription from the composer's daughter Vittoria. & & With movements listed, together with performance times, to title as follows: "Tema - Allemanda del Duca di Brunswick (1:15), Balletto (.60), Passacaglia (2.42), Corrente (1.48), Siciliana (2.25), Gaglilarda (2.55), Sarabanda (3.50), Fanfara e Corale (5)." The order of the movements has been revised, both on the title and within the manuscript. . An Italian composer, conductor and critic, Guerrini studied with both Torchi and Busoni at the Bologna Liceo Musicale, going on to direct the Florence Conservatory (1928–47), the Bologna Conservatory (1947–9), and the Conservatorio di S Cecilia (1950–60).& & "His earlier music combines high seriousness, at times somewhat academic, with luxuriant chromatic harmony reminiscent of Bax or, more significantly, Alfano. The textures and orchestration sometimes suggest Strauss, as does Guerrini’s interest, around 1920, in the symphonic poem; and there are indications, too, of Ravel's influence... The most substantial and imaginative of his early works is his second published work in the genre, L’ultimo viaggio d’Odisseo, which shows his harmony and orchestration at their most evocative. Also notable, in this early period, are the chamber compositions: the Violin Sonata is typical, combining succulent chromaticism with reiterative thematic developments. In time Guerrini’s academicism grew more pronounced, while his tendency to romantic indulgence was tempered by a new, architectonic sobriety. His best work after 1930 is in religious music: the gravely expressive Missa pro defunctis, though conservative, is free from the tiredness that mars much of Guerrini’s later output. On a different line of development, the Sette variazioni sopra una sarabanda di Corelli may, in their ingenious rethinking of material from the remoter past, reflect the influence of his teacher Busoni."         A Special George Grosz Offering of 3 Associated Items

      Offered: 1) An original George Grosz signed letter, handwritten on his stationary for Nora Mirmont, who was first a pupil of Grosz, and later an assistant and friend. 2) A rare mimeograph copy of the typescript for the lecture Nora Mirmont gave on the short film, "George Grosz' Interregnum"at the Hecksher Museum, Huntington in 1962, her perspective anticipating scholarship on Grosz's American years published in the 1980's, including the work of Hess and Flavell, and featuring her own translation of an excerpt from "A Little Yes and a Big No" (the autobiography of Grosz first published in 1946 in an English translation by Dorin). 3) The first edition of George Grosz, the overview monograph prepared by Herbert Bittner with Grosz's assistance, the first to be published posthumously. It lacks the book jacket but is otherwise in excellent condition, pages as if unread, and augmented by a signed dated presentation inscription done in pencil by Nora Mirmont within the month of issue. (No copies were signed by Grosz, as he died 14 months before the book's public release.) FORMATS: Book: Publisher's black cloth boards with plain sides, spine with stamped in gilt letters. Letter: loose, as issued, never mounted / Lecture: stapled paper sheets. NORA MIRMONT: artist and educator, married name, Hambüchen; later resident of Lloyd Harbor, New York; first exhibition of oil paintings noted in February 13, 1954 New Yorker; artist prize at Heckscher Museum named the Nora Mirmont Hambeuchen Award: Museum of Modern Art has an artist file for her in archives. Harvard has in their Grosz archives 6 letters from Nora Hambüchen to Grosz (1955-57), with also correspondence from her husband, William Joseph Hambüchen (no. 163). Getty Research Institute has in their Grosz archives a mimeograph of "George Grosz' Interregnum by Nora Mirmont" along with other materials on the film (Grosz / Series II). Grosz Address: a quarter mile from Heckscher Museum, site of Nora Mirmont's talk. One of their prized holdings is the Grosz painting, "Eclipse of the Sun" (1926). LETTER: An effusive thank you note handwritten in pen & violet ink on the artist's stationary with its Huntington address heading and facing black, gray and white woodcut vignette, addressed to Nora Mirmont with 5 short lines in German, done in fine style over one side of the 207 x 295 mm (8.15 x 11.61 inches) stationary sheet. Salutation is, "Liebe Nora" and note; "Vielen Herzlichen Dank / stets / Dein after Lehrer" (Many thanks, for always your teacher). He has carefully signed with his personal name, underscored with his characteristic intersecting perspective lines with punctuating dots, the 25 mm high capital G with an inner spiral flourish, the r, as a capital, strongly made with running feet. LECTURE MIMEOGRAPH: 5 full pages, about 255 lines, typed on one side only, clear and bright, pages fine, attached with a staple, heading with Heckscher Museum address and lecture title; "Introduction to the film, Interregnum, featuring the drawings of George Grosz", delivered by Nora Mirmont Monday, January 15, 1962 as part of the art education series, 'Tips on Painting'. "George Grosz' Interregnum" is a 29-minute documentary film about Germany between the World Wars, featuring George Grosz' drawings, and narrated by Lotte Lenya. It was produced by Altina and Charles Carey and released in 1960 by Educational Communication Corp, receiving a nomination for an Academy Award for 'Best Documentary Short Film'. Her lecture begins by criticizing the film for manipulating the historical record. "What you are going to see are the stark, terrifying, and superb drawings of George Grosz. But what has been done with them and what you are going to hear along with it will be strictly out of Hollywood's sense of drama." She introduces her main theme with, "I am concerned to present to you a balanced picture of a great artist who was my friend and teacher". Page 2 is an interesting exposition of Grosz' thoughts about satire and why he later was conflicted about the form and even denigrated it. It includes memories of conversations with Nora Mirmont. Pages 3-4 have Nora Mirmont's own English translation of the excerpt, "The artist enters his studio", from "A Little Yes and a Big No". Her translation, which reads very well, begins; "Yes, this is my room, this is my world. Yet at the same time it is like the shell of an oyster that closes quickly, or the house of a sensitive snail." Also on p. 4 is her reminiscence about the initial public response to the "Stick Men" paintings with an insider's view of their creation. Page 5: an excerpt from a letter Grosz wrote students at the Cleveland Institute of Art. In essence, it is a lucid exposition of his aesthetic. The illustrations, reproduced by permission of Claire Goll, consist of six line drawings by Fernand Leger, four lithographs by Pablo Picasso, three etchings by Yves Tanguy, and eight wood-engravings by Jean Arp. This is a remarkable collaboration, showcasing four of the most important artists of the twentieth century.

        The Campaign against Italian East Africa 1940/41

Foolscap quarto (320 × 201 mm) Plum linen, title gilt to the upper board. 61 pages, rectos only, cyclostyled typescript the three sections on different coloured paper-stock, the Problem on pink; the Prelude on white; Victory and Aftermath on blue. Folding coloured map mounted on linen bound in at the rear, troop movements inked in by hand. Very good. Unpublished transcript of Platt's lectures in the prestigious Lees Knowles series, signed by him at the foot of the title page. Platt was commander of the Sudan Defence Force, and led the forces invading Italian East Africa from Sudan during the East African Campaign. After occupying the abandoned railway junction at Kassala in the Sudan, Platt advanced into Eritrea and captured Agordat with relative ease. However "at the almost impregnable mountain stronghold of Keren the Italians stood; it took nearly two months … and heavy casualties on both sides, to dislodge them. Platt's advance towards the southern arm of the pincer was pressed, Addis Ababa fell, and Platt's and Cunningham's forces came together at Amba Alagi. Here the Italian commander, the duke of Aosta, surrendered with the honours of war on 19 May 1941. Platt modestly described Keren and other engagements in Ethiopia as 'bows and arrows' battles compared with those in the western desert. 'But, had it not been for his vigorous and competent leadership, the Italian occupation might have been indefinitely prolonged' (The Times, 29 September 1975)" (ODNB). Extremely uncommon, we have traced a single copy to the IWM, another in the Liddell Hart Military Archives, KCL, although Mockler in Haile Selassie's War refers to an MOD publication of the same title and date, this may be a case of misidentification.

      Paris: (Editions Verve), (1962). Folio. 63pp., unbound as issued. Limited to 200 copies signed by the artist. Illustrated with four color and nineteen black & white etchings by Villon, fifteen of which are double-page. Flocks, herds, and rustic groupings of men and women are shown in the craggy landscape of Greece, in Villon's Cubist style. Jacques Villon was a member of the Duchampian family of artists. In his youth he studied law, but soon abandoned it to join the Cubist movement. He is particularly noted for his mastery of the colored etching. Using a plate for each color, he referred to himself as the "Cubist Impressionist." This work is an apt description of his fusion of structure with color. Villon's finesse with etching is effectively demonstrated in this book, yet even his use of black and white gives a dramatic interpretation to the text. Very fine in printed wrappers and housed in a cloth-backed chemise and slipcase. A magnificent livre d'artiste and a masterpiece.

        Confessions of an Opium Eater (Original screenplay for the 1962 film)

Producer-director Albert Zugsmith's copy of the script for the 1962 film, "Confessions of an Opium Eater," produced and directed by Zugsmith, written for the screen by Robert Hill, and starring Vincent Price. & & Based on the 1822 book, "Confessions of an English Opium Eater," by Thomas DeQuincey. Very freely based upon DeQuincey's book, "Confessions of an Opium Eater" is set in San Francisco during the Tong Wars of the 1800s. Lotus is one of a group of women kidnapped from China and brought to the United States, where they are to be traded in exchange for precious opium. Lotus and her compatriots are rescued by mysterious benefactors and are spirited away. Soon after, DeQuincey sneaks into Chinatown and contacts a merchant by the name of Chin Foon. He finds her but rather than handing her over to Foon, he tries to escape with her. His treachery is discovered, and in a "Yojimbo"-esque twist, admits he is working for both sides in the Tong conflict. He escapes and, stumbling through the bowels of Chinatown, discovers many other bizarre secrets. He also learns that another of Tang's employees, Ruby Low, is not as loyal as supposed. DeQuincey continues prowling around Chinatown; obviously, he has some sort of plan in mind--but what is it? And who is he really working for?         One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest [Marbled and Signed by Kesey]

      NY: Viking. (1962). Kesey's landmark first book, a pivotal novel of the literature of the Sixties, which helped to shape a generation's attitudes on issues of authority, power, madness and, finally, individuality. A uniquely decorated copy, fully marbled by Kesey on the front and back covers, spine, and page edges and signed "Kesey" in block colored letters on the front flyleaf. A year before Kesey died, a collector sent him a group of books asking him to sign them, and in particular for Cuckoo's Nest to do something "special." Kesey, who had been experimenting with marbling, and could not, one imagines, have missed the similarity between the bookish art and the psychedelic art of the 1960s counterculture that he had helped to create, marbled the entire book, on all sides. We only know of one other book he did this to: a paperback of the same title, for the same collector. This is the only clothbound book we know of that he treated this way, and it is a startling artifact, bearing virtually no traces of the familiar binding, but rather presenting a whorling, flowing image, predominantly in red, white and pink. Tape shadows to flyleaf; a very near fine, and unique, copy in a near fine, first issue (Kerouac blurb) dust jacket, with tape shadows to flaps, hairline cracks to the colors, but very little of the usual fading. Possibly the only such copy in existence. . First Edition. Hardcover.

Based on a lengthy article in the New Yorker, Silent Spring book told the story of how insecticides and pesticides were silently killing birds, insects and fish across America. Although the book was primarily concerned with the misuse of pesticides, it was the first work to address the larger issues of environmental pollution. Signed by the author on the half title page with the inscription: "With best wishes." Uncommon signed.

True First Edition [preceding the British] of the author's powerful debut work; a semi-fictional account of his incarceration at Changi, the notorious Japanese prison camp in Singapore. Clavell's full page presentation on the front free endpaper is telling: "Mother / I'll bet there were / many times when we / both figured that this / particular story would / never be told - / with love / from me / Nov '62". Clavell & his family had moved from the UK to Hollywood in 1953. In November of 1962 shortly after the publication of King Rat, they visited England on holiday where this copy, likely one of Clavell's personal copies & one of the earliest off of the press was presented to his Mother. 7500 copies were printed of what was the first in his "Asian Saga", six extraordinarily successful novels published over a period spanning some 30 years: King Rat, 1962 - Tai-Pan, 1966 - Shogun, 1975 - Noble House, 1981 - Whirlwind, 1986 & Gai-Jin, 1993.. The dust wrapper (illustrated by Ellen Raskin), is in beautiful condition with the price intact (a small amount of soil on the rear panel and a touch of rubbing at base of spine but no fraying or tears). 1st edition 1st printing of this fantasy that has become a modern classic. THIS COPY IS INSCRIBED ON THE ENDPAPER BY L'ENGLE. In the stranger than fiction category, A Wrinkle In Time had a difficult time getting published. According to "A Special Message from Madeline L'Engle" on the Random House web site: "After trying forty-odd" publishers (L'Engle later said "twenty-six rejections"), L'Engle's agent returned the manuscript to her. Then at Christmas, L'Engle threw a tea party for her mother. One of the guests happened to know John Farrar of Farrar, Straus & Giroux, and insisted that L'Engle should meet with him. Although the publisher did not at the time publish a line of children's books, Farrar met L'Engle, liked the novel and ultimately published it. A Wrinkle In Time is the winner of the NEWBERY AWARD and the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award. This is an exceptionally nice copy, rare with inscription.

[The true first edition of this book, offered here, should not be confused with the later revised edition (1970), or with later printings of such revised edition, which are rather easily found.] The book contains a section on Sillanpaa's Life and Works written by Dr. Olof Enckell, then Chairman of the Literature Department at Helsinki University, as well as Sillanpaa's acceptance speech, praise of him by the Nobel committee, excerpts from 2 of his most well beloved novels and more. Illustrated with 10 full page color illustrations. Copies of the book in its true first edition, as offered here, are quite scarce. Although the book was not called to be signed, this copy was nevertheless signed by Sillanpaa, making it a rare copy indeed. As Sillanpaa died in 1964, this book may well have been one of the last books he signed. This copy of the book came from the Estate of renowned dancer and choreographer Martha Graham. A beautiful, Fine, Superior, copy of an exceedingly scarce book with a notable Provenance, SIGNED BY FRANS EEMIL SILLANPAA. Quite Beautiful and RARE INDEED.
