Sports Banquet Program Signed by First African-American Heisman Trophy Winner Ernie Davis, as well as by Jim Brown, John Mackey, Maury Youmans, Dave Giusti, 1/21/1962

Mattydale, NY: St. Margaret's Holy Name Society, 1962 Mattydale, NY: St. Margaret's Holy Name Society, 1962. Signed by Ernie Davis and four other Syracuse University athlete alumni. January 21, 1962: A program for the St. Margaret's Holy Name Society Fathers and Sons Sports Banquet (as such events were then called) program, for a feast honoring Jim Brown and Special Guest Ernie Davis - both former star running backs at Syracuse University, two-time All-American Davis quite recently, having capped his final season at Syracuse in 1961 by becoming the first African-American to win the Heisman Trophy. The banquet program was published by St. Margaret's Church in Mattydale, NY, a northern-edge adjacent suburb of Syracuse, and was funded, of course, by the local business ads that dominated such things. It is octavo in size, stapled wraps, unpaginated, but 20 pp. + covers; in Very Good condition, with faint front cover soiling and four small pieces of dry, removable masking tape on the rear cover. That's because it was in my scrapbook from back then. The dominant ads were not all that was in this program, however; There were two pages featuring Brown and Davis, a list of honored guests (that's my penciled remarks on the honored guests page, scrawled at age 13) and, more to the point: the autographs of Ernie Davis, Jim Brown, John Mackey, Maury Youmans and Dave Giusti. Giusti and Youmans were local-boys-make-good former stars at 'Cuse - Giusti as a pitcher for the Houston Colt 45s (later Astros), the St. Louis Cardinals, the San Diego Padres and the Pittsburgh Pirates, for whom he was named Relief Pitcher of the Year in 1971 by the Sporting News and made the All-Star team in 1973; Youmans was a defensive end for Da Bears and Da Cowboys. But it was the non-local-boy 'Cuse stars at the banquet who were all to become hall-of-famers: Jim Brown, John Mackey, and the late Ernie Davis. I wonder how many Pop Warner-based Father-Son Sports Banquets get such a lineup at the same dinner these days ? Davis, of course, died some 14 months later, a victim of leukemia, before ever being able to play a down of pro football. The Cleveland Browns, who had acquired him from the Washington Redskins, wanted to team him with the other former Orangeman heavyweight running back at the banquet that night, Brown. There's your running game. But it wasn't meant to be. Ernie passed on. Hence, the great rarity of autographs by one of the most memorable Heisman winners in history. Davis was, of course, honored in recent years by a book and a movie, both entitled The Express; coming out of high school in Elmira, NY, his nickname was The Elmira Express. This all belongs to the mists of time, now. Your provenance for these autographs are 1) Forensic Handwriting Examiner Frank Garo (his certification will accompany the program), and 2)...Me. And a written provenance letter from me, if you want. I was the skinny kid just about done with Pop Warner football, about to go on and get two broken legs, an ACL injury that later gave me a bionic knee, and about one each of every other football injury (you know the routine - but it was worth it, wasn't it ?), who walked around and timidly got all these autographs the night of January 21, 1962. Don't worry. I did it twice. I'm keeping the other set. l-eph

American Folk Blues Festival, Original, Vintage, 1962 German Concert Poster By Gunther Kieser

      - American Folk Blues Festival Concert Poster, Auditorium Max,[Hamburg], Oct. 18,[1962], produced by Lippmann & Rau; designed by Gunther Kieser with the Michel + Kieser imprint to bottom centre right, inside the guitar margin. A1 Format, 23.25" by 33" (59 cm. by 83.8 cm.), in fine condition, bright, unmarked, with crisp factory folds. The American Folk Blues Festival was the brainchild of German concert promoters, Horst Lippmann and Fritz Rau, who had been successfully presenting jazz concerts in Germany since the mid - 1950's. The first AFBF was held in 1962, for which this poster was designed, and working with the well-connected Chicago bluesman, composer and bassist Willie Dixon, L&R were able to present a who's who of American urban and country blues artists for the first time to European audiences. Exposure to these great American blues musicians inspired and influenced a generation of British musicians, including future rock stars Mick Jagger, Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood, all of whom played an important role in the blue-based British Invasion of the 1960's. AFBF continued until 1972 with a series of highly successful concerts in Germany, France and England, after which the festivals were terminated for an eight year hiatus before resuming in 1980 for another five years. The posters created exclusively for the German AFBF festivals were designed by the eminent graphic designer Gunther Kieser and are representative of some of his finest music poster designs. A significant blues poster for the first presentation of the influential American Folk Blues Festival, in collector's condition. J1750 [Attributes: First Edition]

With their ideas rooted in Marxism and the 20th-century European artistic avant-gardes, they advocated experiences of life alternative to those admitted by advanced capitalism, for the fulfillment of human desires. For this purpose they suggested and experimented with the "construction of situations", namely the setting up of environments favorable for the fulfillment of such desires. Using methods drawn from the arts, they developed a series of experimental fields of study, including unitary urbanism and psychogeography.         Wise Blood.

New York: Farrar, Straus and Cudahy, 1962 - Octavo. Original black cloth, titles to spine gilt, top edge dyed orange. With the dust jacket. A beautiful copy in the dust jacket with faded spine panel. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "For Helen Nash, with cheers, Flannery O'Connor". Wise Blood, O'Connor's first novel, was originally published in 1952; this is a later printing. It appears that Nash knew O'Connor's good friend Maryat Lee, who requested this inscription. On 17 August 1962, O'Connor wrote to Lee that "Book on way - a donation to the cause if there is a cause if not, spectacle est gratui anyhow. I put to Helen Nash & after it was wrapped up I got to worrying if it shouldn't have been Dr. Helen Nash, but it was done wrapped up. I ain't supposed to know she's a doctor". Lee was a supporter of the Civil Rights Movement, and Nash (1921–2012) was a pioneering African American doctor, becoming in 1949 the first African American to join the staff of the St. Louis Children's Hospital. Inscriptions of any type by O'Connor are rare. [Attributes: First Edition]

In a dust jacket, with a photograph of Robert Frost taken by David H. Rhinelander on the front panel. Very good. The spine ends and edges of the covers are gently bumped and rubbed. There is a brief notation in pen on the front free endsheet, under Frost's inscription. The pages are tanned, however they are very clean. In a very good dust jacket, with mild rubbing and age-toning. The jacket is also lightly foxed, and the rear panel has just a trace of soiling. The edges are subtly chipped. The majority of the chipping is to the paper at the head of the jacket's spine. The book's publication date has been written in pen below the price on the front inside flap. This is Frost's last book of poetry published during his lifetime. Inscribed by Robert Frost on the front free endsheet. Frost was a four-time Pulitzer-prize winner.
