Cloth. This volume contains the article "Symmetries of Baryons and Mesons" by Murray Gell-Mann, found on pages 1067-1084. Gell-Mann was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1969 "for his contributions and discoveries concerning the classification of elementary particles and their interactions". This paper demonstrates the "introduction of SU(3) single-octet structure of the known mesons and octet-decuplet structure for the baryons. [and] predicts the Omega- Hyperon" There is one earlier introduction of these concepts, in a private institutional paper CTSL-20 which (while quite rare) was printed separately and later reprinted in "The Eightfold Way: A Review" much later (1964). As such, this is the earliest obtainable and best work related to the Gell-Mann's Nobel Prize. See Ezhela, et al, pgs 181 and 186-7.

        "GREAT POSSESSIONS" ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT: [Published as BIFFEN'S MILLIONS in the U.S. and FROZEN ASSETS in the U.K.]

      1962-63 First edition. P. G. ("Plum") WODEHOUSE'S ORIGINAL TYPED MANUSCRIPT WITH EXTENSIVE NOTES, and with the original, working title of "Great Possessions." The eventual book was first published in the U. S. in 1963 under the title BIFFEN'S MILLIONS and later in the U. K. as FROZEN ASSETS. The manuscript was given to its current owner by Wodehouse and has never appeared on the market. In addition to the 222-page, heavily emended manuscript, there are also about 200 pages of notes by Plum. In an interview in the last year of his life, Wodehouse, commenting on his preparatory work, said that it usually ran to "about four hundred pages of notes. I write down everything that comes into my mind, and about half of it is about characters that aren't in the book at all." In this case there are 58 pages dated June 2, 1962 through Aug 28, 1962, all of which are full-page handwritten notes by PGW; another 45 to 50 pages labeled "Sequence," probably 2/3rds of which are handwritten, dated from July through November 1962; a further 53 pages also labeled "Sequence," dated Feb 19, 1963; and another 40 undated pages of notes, 30 of which are handwritten. A number of Wodehouse manuscripts came to auction in the 1990's and since then there has been just one other, in 2003. (The latter was a manuscript of 170 pages with about 50 pages of handwritten and typed notes and a notebook with 35 handwritten pages of notes. It brought about $24,000.) Minor wear to edges, as might be expected. Housed in custom clamshell case with leather spine label.

      [Stockholm: Royal Dramatic Theatre, nd. but ca. 1962].. Cloth backed boards, printed and manuscript labels. Quarto. 192 leaves, mimeographed on rectos only. Corners bumped, slight sunning at edges, otherwise fine. Mimeographed playscript of the highly important Swedish translation, from the unpublished manuscript, by Karl Ragnar Gierow and Sven Barthel. The history of this translation is fundamental to the history of the text eventually published in English by Yale University Press in 1964, and is discussed by Donald Gallup on pp. 291-5 of PIGEONS ON THE GRANITE (New Haven 1988). In summary, O'Neill had left the play unfinished, and specified that the script was to be destroyed in the event of his death, but a revised typescript had been deposited inadvertently with other papers in the Beinecke Library in 1951. In 1957, Carlotta O'Neill apprised Gierow, who had staged a successful Swedish adaptation of LONG DAY'S JOURNEY..., of its existence, and he undertook the task of an edited, translated adaptation which, although featuring excisions, remained true to what remained of O'Neill's text. When the play was produced in November of 1962, the consensus was that the play merited publication in English, and the establishment of the English text was undertaken by Donald Gallup by collating the original typescript, the Swedish translation, and the Swedish adaptation for the stage. The text here present would appear to be that of the verbatim Swedish translation by Barthel and Girow, as it includes O'Neill's descriptions of characters and sets, as well as the three scene format of Act One (which had been compressed in the adaptation). However, the epilogue, which was not included in the Swedish adaptation, does not appear to be included here. There are a few manuscript corrections or insertions in an unknown hand scattered throughout, several amounting to the addition of a line or two. A highly important script of significance transcending that of most simple translations.

      MGM 1962 - Screenplay written by Helen Deutsch November 20, 1962 [but with revisions dated up through October 1963]. 129 pp., studio generated mimeograph. In a special black leather binding, with the title and star Harve Presnell's name embossed on the front cover, and with title also embossed on spine. Eighteen (18) vintage photos from the film are tipped in, and one additional photo is laid in loosely, along with a folded certificate on parchment-like paper from the Women of the Motion Picture Industry of New Orleans, recognizing Presnell's contribution to the film. There is one minor stain to bottom inner front cover, else binding and script are just ABOUT FINE, the loosely laid-in parchment piece has some marginal stains, and is VERY GOOD. THE UNSINKABLE MOLLY BROWN is one of the classic American musical films of the 1960s. Presnell, who created the male lead role of Johnny "Leaadville" Brown in this show's original run on Broadway, also played this part when MGM filmed it, this time with Debbie Reynolds as Molly Brown. This book on the effects of pesticides is a landmark in environmental writing inspiring the movement that led to the banning of DDT and raising awareness of the important connection between humans and their environment which hitherto had been generally taken for granted. This copy is INSCRIBED "To Eunice/with best wishes" and SIGNED by the author on the half-title page. Signed copies of this important book, one of the most important of the century by many standards, are rather scarce as, ironically, Carson died of cancer less than two years after its publication.

      48 pp. Folio (ca. 345 x 244 mm.). Unbound. Notated in both ink and pencil on 16-stave music manuscript paper. Heavily annotated with amendations and corrections throughout and including sketches and sections ultimately cancelled. Several movements dated by the composer at their conclusion, indicating that the work was written over a period of time extending from September (or earlier in 1962) to December of 1962 in Rome. Housed in a card folder with a presentation inscription from the composer's daughter Vittoria. With movements listed, together with performance times, to title as follows: "Tema - Allemanda del Duca di Brunswick (1:15), Balletto (.60), Passacaglia (2.42), Corrente (1.48), Siciliana (2.25), Gaglilarda (2.55), Sarabanda (3.50), Fanfara e Corale (5)." The order of the movements has been revised, both on the title and within the manuscript. . An Italian composer, conductor and critic, Guerrini studied with both Torchi and Busoni at the Bologna Liceo Musicale, going on to direct the Florence Conservatory (1928–47), the Bologna Conservatory (1947–9), and the Conservatorio di S Cecilia (1950–60). "His earlier music combines high seriousness, at times somewhat academic, with luxuriant chromatic harmony reminiscent of Bax or, more significantly, Alfano. The textures and orchestration sometimes suggest Strauss, as does Guerrini’s interest, around 1920, in the symphonic poem; and there are indications, too, of Ravel's influence... The most substantial and imaginative of his early works is his second published work in the genre, L’ultimo viaggio d’Odisseo, which shows his harmony and orchestration at their most evocative. Also notable, in this early period, are the chamber compositions: the Violin Sonata is typical, combining succulent chromaticism with reiterative thematic developments. In time Guerrini’s academicism grew more pronounced, while his tendency to romantic indulgence was tempered by a new, architectonic sobriety. His best work after 1930 is in religious music: the gravely expressive Missa pro defunctis, though conservative, is free from the tiredness that mars much of Guerrini’s later output. Met twee originele enveloppen.* Verhelderende - soms pittige, dan weer bescheiden - brieven van de dichter aan verschillende redacteuren van De Gids. De eerste brief is een weloverwogen weigering van de kersverse Constantijn Huygensprijswinnaar van het verzoek van de redactie om een bijdrage over 'het dichterschap': 'wanneer ik pas een artikel in die geest had geschreven zou dat trouwens het improvisatiekarakter van mijn spreken bij de prijsuitreiking kunnen schaden'. Wel voegt De Vries vier kwatrijnen bij, onder de titel 'Dichterschap'.In de twee daaropvolgende briefkaarten is de dichter enigszins ongeduldig. Hij heeft nog geen drukproef ontvangen en ontvangt zijn inzending graag terug, als deze niet wordt geplaatst. The first printing of "Candy" (the story of an irresistible young woman who is oblivious to her own sexualiy) was largely seized and destroyed by the French government. Olympia Press publisher Maurice Girodias substituted the wrappers from the remaining first edition copies with new wrappers with the title "Lollipop" in order to circumvent the authorities and sell to the British export market. This is one of the copies which escaped the purge with the altered title -- very uncommon and scarce inscribed or signed. Basis for the film. Near Fine in wraps as issued but for light foxing to the page edges -- a clean copy. Inscribed by Southern (to his friend, television producer Nelson Lyon) on the half title page, as follows: "To my dear Grand Nels, this copy -- which Bartel and others have dubbed 'fraud and double fraud', although it is not -- repeat not true) of my Lollipop for, as I say, a certain dear grand Nels Lyon, with unbounded warmth and admiration. Aus der Bibliothek des ehemaligen Stadtarchivar Ludwig Morenz mit dessen Namenseintrag und seinen Eintragungen. In einem schmucklosen Bibliothekseinband, wohl nur in kleinster Auflage erschienen, hier ein mit Erlaubnis der Autorin kopiertes Exemplar (mit dementsprechendem Bleistifteintrag von Morenz auf dem Vorsatzblatt, demnach entstand die Kopie 1982, das Werk selbst aber 1962, mit Korrekturen die dann erst nach 1982 dazu kamen). Wohl unter Zuhilfenamen von Daten die dem Stadtarchiv zur Verfügung standen, somit fachlich von hoher Qualität. Jede Ortschaft bekommt seine kurze historische Erklärung. Hinten ein später von Ludwig Morenz erstelltes Ortsnamenregister das größtenteils handschriftlich erweitert wurde. Da unser Exemplar keine Seitenzahlen aufweist, ist die Bearbeitung des Buches nicht ganz einfach, es scheint aber eine alphabetische Abfolge erst nach Stadtkreisen und dann nach Gemeinden zu geben. - Die Kanten leicht beschabt, Reste eines älteren Rücken-Bibliotheksschildes, innen gebräuntes Papier. Schmucklos aber solide.

Together with Bradbury's last novel, Farewell Summer (2006), these novels comprise the Green Town trilogy. In Something Wicked, Jim Nightshade and Will Halloway visit the travelling circus that has come to their town, but quickly learn that the circus, along with its sinister leader Mr. Dark, is much more diabolical than they originally thought. Desde joven estudió dibujo y pintura; uno de sus maestros fue Giorgio De Chirico. Publicó por primera vez en 1937 (Viaje olvidado). En 1940 se casó con Adolfo Bioy Casares, ese mismo año compiló con él y con Borges una proverbial Antología de la Literatura Fantástica. Sus poemas y cuentos aparecieron en la revista Sur que dirigía su hermana Victoria. Entre las más de veinte obras publicadas figuran: Enumeración de la patria (poemas), Los que aman, odian (novela, en colaboración con Bioy) y Los traidores (teatro, en colaboración con J. R. Wilcock). Recibió el Premio Municipal de Poesía y el Primer Premio Nacional de Poesía. Realizó numerosas traducciones al inglés y al francés y, a su vez, fue traducida a varios idiomas.         One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

      Viking, New York 1962 - Hardcover. First edition. First edition, first state with bright green cloth and yellow lettering along with the original orange topstain. Has the 5-word Kerouac blurb on the front inside flap of the jacket and $4.95 price. A near fine book in a very good dust jacket. Some soiling to the bottom of the boards and offsetting to the front and rear pastedown. Jacket has some wear to the extremities and at the head and foot of the spine. Light sunning to the jacket spine. Kesey's first book is set in a psychiatric ward in Oregon and is narrated by a giant, schizophrenic Indian named Chief Bromden. Kesey's reputation as serious novelist was later overtaken by his role as the master ceremony of acid tests and the head Merry Prankster. Still Cuckoo's Nest was turned into a successful film that featured Jack Nicholson and Louise Fletcher. The book, long a counterculture favorite, has continued to grow in popularity. Kesey has inscribed the book on the front end paper: "To Joe / The slowly murmered / occasion equals the / quick trick. / Ken Kesey " Such inscribed copies of the book are now quite scarce.         ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT REVIEW OF NANCY MITFORD'S "THE WATER BEETLE" With a first edition of Nancy Mitford's The Water Beetle (Hamilton, 1962)

A single foolscap (214 x 328 mm) lined page containing approximately 600 words in holograph manuscript reviewing Nancy Mitford's "The Water Beetle" for the Daily Telegraph. Signed at the head of the page, Waugh has added "proof please to Combe Florey House, Taunton" to the margin in red ink. A single horizontal crease, otherwise fine. The review is a wonderful testament to the close friendship shared by Mitford and Waugh who loved nothing more than to tease and rag one another. Evelyn Waugh's review of Mitford's The Water Beetle was published in the Sunday Telegraph on 21st October, 1962. For many decades Evelyn Waugh and Nancy Mitford had been acquaintances. Their friendship, strengthened by a shared sense of humour and love of teasing, blossomed through frequent and intimate correspondence. In 1951 Waugh visited Mitford in Paris and wrote of her, "she leads you into her salon ... and talks, prattles, giggles - of what? Gossip, outrageous, incredible, entirely funny". Miss Nancy Mitford is full, he states, of "sweetness, happiness and inexpressible levity." During its preparation this book of essays was discussed at length between the correspondents. Commenting on her choice of title Mitford wrote, "I hope to disarm the critics by calling it The Water Beetle." The title being taken from Hilaire Belloc's, A Moral Alphabet: W for Water Beetle The Water Beetle here shall teach, A sermon far beyond your reach; He flabbergasts the Human Race, By gliding on the Water's face, With ease, celerity and grace, But if he ever stopped to think, Of how he did it he would sink. Upon receipt of an explanation for the title's derivation Waugh responds, "An excellent, disarming title making everything easy for reviewers. How I look forward to the book." On 10th October Waugh wrote to Mitford to say he had received a copy of her book and had very much enjoyed it, apart from the "coarse" drawings by Osbert Lancaster. He also mentioned that he was writing a review for the Sunday Telegraph and concludes, "I hope I say the right thing. I delight in the book." Miss Mitford may have been surprised therefore when the review began in Waugh's typically acerbic style, "The contemporary English literary world may be conveniently divided into: those who can write but cannot think, those who can think but cannot write, and those who can neither think nor write … Nancy Mitford, by her choice of title, puts herself in the first class." Waugh goes on to praise the fluency of the writing in these essays, which range from childhood reminiscences to discussing Scott's expedition to the Antarctic "and she does it all with ease, celerity and grace… all is told in the same gay artless, artful manner as though in one of those salons whose demise she tearlessly regrets…capable of such gaffes as describing Oates's disappearance in the blizzard as suicide." He concludes, "This accumulation of short pieces brings only delight.... [Mitford] constantly flabbergasts the present reviewer. When most of our writers have sunk, she will still be gliding on the water's face." Mitford's response upon reading the printed review is unsurprising, "You are a brute…. Oh how I screamed at your review …many thanks for flaying me alive, poor little unpretentious Water Beetle."
