        The Tin Drum

New York: Pantheon, 1962. First American edition of the author's first novel. Octavo, original red cloth. Signed by the author. Slip laid in from the publisher, "with our compliments", most likely a review copy. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with just a touch of wear to the extremities. A very sharp copy. When Günter Grass published "The Tin Drum" in 1959 it was as if German literature had been granted a new beginning after decades of linguistic and moral destruction. Within the pages of this, his first novel, Grass recreated the lost world from which his creativity sprang, Danzig, his home town, as he remembered it from the years of his infancy before the catastrophe of war. Here he comes to grips with the enormous task of reviewing contemporary history by recalling the disavowed and the forgotten: the victims, losers and lies that people wanted to forget because they had once believed in them. At the same time the novel breaks the bounds of realism by having as its protagonist and narrator an infernal intelligence in the body of a three-year-old, a monster who overpowers the fellow human beings he approaches with the help of a toy drum. The unforgettable Oskar Matzerath is an intellectual whose critical approach is childishness, a one-man carnival, dadaism in action in everyday German provincial life just when this small world becomes involved in the insanity of the great world surrounding it. It is not too audacious to assume that "The Tin Drum" will become one of the enduring literary works of the 20th century" (The Swedish Academy).

Champagne and Shoes. An Essay on John T. Little's Coloma Emporium with an Original Double Leaf from Its Journal: 1850-1851

San Francisco: Peregrine Press, 1962. Quarto. 20pp. One of 76 copies printed and illustrated by Henry Evans at the Peregrine Press for the Porpoise Bookshop. With illustrations throughout in pale terracotta. This leaf book explores the contents of a journal recording the business of a Gold Rush-era shop owned by John T. Little. The original double leaf from the journal is dated June 1851 on the first three pages, and July 1851 on the last page. The leaf records purchases, including hats and gloves, clay pipes, wine, brandy, and all kinds of comestibles. The accompanying text by Kenneth M. Johnson describes the history of Coloma, California, where the store was located, and the emporium itself, which, as the title suggests, sold everything from champagne to shoes. Spine faintly sunned, else fine in blue boards and housed in the original blue slipcase.

        Menu for La Colomba

Venezia: La Colomba, 1962. 13 x 13 inch single sheet with screen printed typo-pictorial design in colors. Verso with food offerings and prices. A menu designed by the important Belgian surrealist, probably created for the famed art bistro's design contest, and quite possibly a mock-up. Signed and dated 1962 by Mesens in the lower left hand corner. This is further inscribed in 1964 by Mesens to his long time friend and accomplice, the surrealist jazz musician and all around bohemian and eccentric George Melly. "For Diana and George, who should go to eat by gondola in Venezia! Look at the prices. . . Ted. 1964." A fantastic association. Melly was introduced to surrealism by Mesens, and worked for a time in his important surrealist gallery in London, where he developed a close and complicated three-way relationship with Mesens and his wife Sybil. Melly would go on to write the biography of Mesens, entitled "Don't Tell Sybil." The "Diana" of the inscription is Diana Moynihan, George's second wife. Folded twice, with overall creasing, still about very good. Likely unique.

        Wise Blood

New York: Farrar, Straus and Cudahy,, 1962. Octavo. Original black cloth, titles to spine gilt, top edge dyed orange. With the dust jacket. A beautiful copy in the dust jacket with faded spine panel. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "For Helen Nash, with cheers, Flannery O'Connor". Wise Blood, O'Connor's first novel, was originally published in 1952; this is a later printing. It appears that Nash knew O'Connor's good friend Maryat Lee, who requested this inscription. On 17 August 1962, O'Connor wrote to Lee that "Book on way - a donation to the cause if there is a cause if not, spectacle est gratui anyhow. I put to Helen Nash & after it was wrapped up I got to worrying if it shouldn't have been Dr. Helen Nash, but it was done wrapped up. I ain't supposed to know she's a doctor". Lee was a supporter of the Civil Rights Movement, and Nash (1921–2012) was a pioneering African American doctor, becoming in 1949 the first African American to join the staff of the St. Louis Children's Hospital. Inscriptions of any type by O'Connor are rare.

DEATHS FOR THE LADIES: And Other Disasters.

Putnam Sons (1962)., New York: - First edition, paperwraps issue, of this "run of poems, short poems, very short poems, and turns of prose." From the collection of Adeline Lubell-Naiman. INSCRIBED with an elaborate drawing "The critic pursued by a theme [large scribbled drawing spanning inside front cover and first leaf] Love / (that is to say lustility [sic] and housefection [sic] to Lucky and Adeline) / Norman." This paperwraps issue came out at the same time as the small hardback printing. Very good. Adeline Lubell-Naiman was the editor instrumental in the eventual publication of THE NAKED AND THE DEAD. In 1946, while an editor at Little, Brown, Lubell-Naiman convinced Mailer to submit the first 200 pages of THE NAKED AND THE DEAD, which she talked up to her publisher. Unfortunately, she was also the one to suggest historian and critic Bernard DeVoto read the manuscript--he recommended not publishing. But Mailer submitted it to Rinehart, who published the book in 1948. Over the years, Lubell-Naiman remained close friends with Mailer and his wives. In the summer of 1968 she even played the role of "Adeline McCarthy," a president of a women's college in Mailer's film "Maidstone" (Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center website).
