        Big Sur

New York: Farrar, Straus & Cudahy, 1962.. New York: Farrar, Straus & Cudahy, 1962. First edition. Octavo, original cloth. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with a minute closed tear. A superior copy. Big Sur has a swing and a concern with living, a feeling for nature, a self-doubting humour and an awareness of posture which puts it squarely in the powerful tradition of American folk writing. Stunning and vivid" (Sunday Times). "In Big Sur, the mirror of the Beat way of life is hammered at and it shatters. The Kerouac hero "cracks up" while doing the things he has always liked best to do" (New York Times).

Die Ortsnamen des Stadt- und Landkreises München. Typoskript.

        Something Wicked This Way Comes

New York: Simon and Shuster, 1962. New York: Simon and Shuster, 1962 First edition, first printing. Publisher's yellow cloth lettered in black, red topstain; in the original pictorial dust jacket, illustrated with a painting by Gray Foy. A fine copy, with a hint of wear to the spine ends, minor small white spot to the top of page edges, bright and clean interior; unclipped dust jacket, with some light wear and minor chipping to the extremities, price crossed out and replaced with new price notation, minor rubbing to the hinges, light toning to the spine, bright and clean panels. Overall, a bright and pleasing copy. A masterful blend of horror and fantasy, Something Wicked This Way Comes is considered Ray Bradbury's first full-length novel. Set in the fictional Green Town based on Bradbury's home of Waukegan, Illinois, this novel is a companion piece to his 1957 Dandelion Wine. While Dandelion Wine is a the story of two 12 year old boys during one blissful summer, Something Wicked This Way Comes is about two 13 year old boys during one hauntingly terrifying autumn. Together with Bradbury's last novel, Farewell Summer (2006), these novels comprise the Green Town trilogy. In Something Wicked, Jim Nightshade and Will Halloway visit the travelling circus that has come to their town, but quickly learn that the circus, along with its sinister leader Mr. Dark, is much more diabolical than they originally thought. Something Wicked This Way Comes has significant personal ties to Bradbury's childhood; according to his official biographer, Sam Weller, Bradbury began writing it after visiting a travelling circus that came to his town, where he met the eccentric Mr. Electrico, who cryptically instructed the young Bradbury to "live forever!" He based the character Mr. Dark on the more benign Mr. Electrico, and continued to portray other people he met into various writings, including a tattooed man that became Bradbury's Illustrated Man. Bradbury claimed that he began writing voraciously shortly after this significant experience at the travelling circus.. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

        Price Theory: A Provisional Text

Chicago: Aldine Publishing, 1962.. Chicago: Aldine Publishing, 1962. First edition of the economist's classic text on price theory used at the University of Chicago. Signed by Milton Friedman on the title page. Very good in wrappers. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. Rare, especially signed. Friedman's exposition is the best nonmathematical treatment I have seen… [T]his collection and elaboration of some of Friedman's ideas is a very valuable supplement to standard graduate theory texts.         ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT REVIEW OF NANCY MITFORD'S "THE WATER BEETLE" With a first edition of Nancy Mitford's The Water Beetle (Hamilton, 1962)

Taunton , 1962. Taunton , 1962. A single foolscap (214 x 328 mm) lined page containing approximately 600 words in holograph manuscript reviewing Nancy Mitford's "The Water Beetle" for the Daily Telegraph. Signed at the head of the page, Waugh has added "proof please to Combe Florey House, Taunton" to the margin in red ink. A single horizontal crease, otherwise fine. The review is a wonderful testament to the close friendship shared by Mitford and Waugh who loved nothing more than to tease and rag one another. Evelyn Waugh's review of Mitford's The Water Beetle was published in the Sunday Telegraph on 21st October, 1962. For many decades Evelyn Waugh and Nancy Mitford had been acquaintances. Their friendship, strengthened by a shared sense of humour and love of teasing, blossomed through frequent and intimate correspondence. In 1951 Waugh visited Mitford in Paris and wrote of her, "she leads you into her salon ... and talks, prattles, giggles - of what? Gossip, outrageous, incredible, entirely funny". Miss Nancy Mitford is full, he states, of "sweetness, happiness and inexpressible levity." During its preparation this book of essays was discussed at length between the correspondents. Commenting on her choice of title Mitford wrote, "I hope to disarm the critics by calling it The Water Beetle." The title being taken from Hilaire Belloc's, A Moral Alphabet: W for Water Beetle The Water Beetle here shall teach, A sermon far beyond your reach; He flabbergasts the Human Race, By gliding on the Water's face, With ease, celerity and grace, But if he ever stopped to think, Of how he did it he would sink. Upon receipt of an explanation for the title's derivation Waugh responds, "An excellent, disarming title making everything easy for reviewers. How I look forward to the book." On 10th October Waugh wrote to Mitford to say he had received a copy of her book and had very much enjoyed it, apart from the "coarse" drawings by Osbert Lancaster. He also mentioned that he was writing a review for the Sunday Telegraph and concludes, "I hope I say the right thing. I delight in the book." Miss Mitford may have been surprised therefore when the review began in Waugh's typically acerbic style, "The contemporary English literary world may be conveniently divided into: those who can write but cannot think, those who can think but cannot write, and those who can neither think nor write … Nancy Mitford, by her choice of title, puts herself in the first class." Waugh goes on to praise the fluency of the writing in these essays, which range from childhood reminiscences to discussing Scott's expedition to the Antarctic "and she does it all with ease, celerity and grace… all is told in the same gay artless, artful manner as though in one of those salons whose demise she tearlessly regrets…capable of such gaffes as describing Oates's disappearance in the blizzard as suicide." He concludes, "This accumulation of short pieces brings only delight.... [Mitford] constantly flabbergasts the present reviewer. When most of our writers have sunk, she will still be gliding on the water's face." Mitford's response upon reading the printed review is unsurprising, "You are a brute…. Oh how I screamed at your review …many thanks for flaying me alive, poor little unpretentious Water Beetle."         [Small Archive of Material for an Unproduced Film:] THE THIRD FORCE

Los Angeles. Various dates but chiefly 1962 - 1963.. Los Angeles. Various dates but chiefly 1962 - 1963.. Two two carbon typescripts, plus file of correspondence. Generally good to very good. A small but interesting file of material relating to this unproduced film project, a fictionalized treatment of UN Peace Keeping Forces drawing on their involvement in the Congo. The lot includes two variant drafts of a treatment, 99 leaves and 86 leaves, the latter in specially printed production binder, with several rather frayed revised inserts laid in, with scattered manuscript corrections and deletions. Also present is a file of dozen pieces of correspondence relating largely to research, but as well to trying to place the project. The most significant item among the latter is a long, single-spaced typed letter to Nugent from Frank Capra, rather messily typed, with corrections, signed "Warmest regards, Frank," responding in enthusiastic detail after his reading of the treatment, but declining to get involved due to commitment to another project. He writes, in part: "The best dramatic impact your script has for me is the glorification of men who give their lives to help avert another World War. This is new and important and dramatic. This is worth making a picture about; volunteer soldiers from every clime who give their all to prevent a holocaust...."

Autograph working manuscript in condensed score of the Divagazioni sopra un'Allemanda di John Bull per Orch. [7 variazioni su un'Allemanda di John Bull], signed.

. 48 pp. Folio (ca. 345 x 244 mm.). Unbound. Notated in both ink and pencil on 16-stave music manuscript paper. Heavily annotated with amendations and corrections throughout and including sketches and sections ultimately cancelled. Several movements dated by the composer at their conclusion, indicating that the work was written over a period of time extending from September (or earlier in 1962) to December of 1962 in Rome. Housed in a card folder with a presentation inscription from the composer's daughter Vittoria. With movements listed, together with performance times, to title as follows: "Tema - Allemanda del Duca di Brunswick (1:15), Balletto (.60), Passacaglia (2.42), Corrente (1.48), Siciliana (2.25), Gaglilarda (2.55), Sarabanda (3.50), Fanfara e Corale (5)." The order of the movements has been revised, both on the title and within the manuscript.. An Italian composer, conductor and critic, Guerrini studied with both Torchi and Busoni at the Bologna Liceo Musicale, going on to direct the Florence Conservatory (1928-47), the Bologna Conservatory (1947-9), and the Conservatorio di S Cecilia (1950-60). "His earlier music combines high seriousness, at times somewhat academic, with luxuriant chromatic harmony reminiscent of Bax or, more significantly, Alfano. The textures and orchestration sometimes suggest Strauss, as does Guerrini's interest, around 1920, in the symphonic poem; and there are indications, too, of Ravel's influence... The most substantial and imaginative of his early works is his second published work in the genre, L'ultimo viaggio d'Odisseo, which shows his harmony and orchestration at their most evocative. Also notable, in this early period, are the chamber compositions: the Violin Sonata is typical, combining succulent chromaticism with reiterative thematic developments. In time Guerrini's academicism grew more pronounced, while his tendency to romantic indulgence was tempered by a new, architectonic sobriety. His best work after 1930 is in religious music: the gravely expressive Missa pro defunctis, though conservative, is free from the tiredness that mars much of Guerrini's later output. On a different line of development, the Sette variazioni sopra una sarabanda di Corelli may, in their ingenious rethinking of material from the remoter past, reflect the influence of his teacher Busoni." Ed Ruscha's first book, a seminal "bookwork", one of the most influential conceptual art works, it served as a kind of tonic, liberating the artists' book from many of its traditional emphases. "The first book came out of a play with words. The title came before I even thought about the pictures. I like the word 'gasoline' and I like the specific quality of 'twenty-six.' If you look at the book you will see how well the typography works - I worked on all that before I took the photographs. Above all, the photographs I use are not 'arty' in any sense of the word. . . . One of the purposes of my book has to do with making a mass-produced object. The final product has a very commercial, professional feel to it . . . . I have eliminated all text from my books — I want absolutely neutral material. My pictures are not that interesting, nor the subject matter . . . my book is more like a collection of 'ready- 56 item 241 mades'. Edward Ruscha, Artforum interview, 1965; Lippard, Six Years: The dematerialization of the art object from 1966 to 1972, p.11. "The most renowned series of artist's books in the history of the genre," Parr & Badger, The Photobook: A History, Vol. II; Castleman, A Century of Artists Books, p.167.

        Five Girls

New York: Crown, 1962.. New York: Crown, 1962. First edition. Large quarto, original red cloth. Signed by Sam Haskins on the front endpaper. Light rubbing to the bottom, else fine in a fine dust jacket with just a modicum of rubbing. Also laid into this volume is a signed photograph printed by Haskins. The photographers first book, beautifully reproduced in gravure. In his foreword to this work Haskins wrote, "Five Girls represents many things to me. A serious project that served as a clearing house for graphic ideas which were floating around in the back of my mind. A fun project which was a relief from highly disciplined advertising illustration. An opportunity to control the full cycle of an undertaking, from the first conception of the idea and choice of approach, through the photographic processes and selection of pictures, to the final detailed layout and design. I do not like to dream up explanations for my work. That is why this book is, quite simply, me thinking pictures." A sharp copy, uncommon signed. Cowboy Kate's publication by Crown in 1965 contributed to Sam Haskins international reputation for signature photographic passions. It was one of the first 20th century artistic pieces to creatively use black-and-white photographic grain as a medium for expression and image design. After selling a million copies worldwide, Haskins won the Prix Nadar in France in 1964, and his book continues to influence artists of photography, film, and fashion nearly five decades after its publication. Cowboy Kate was the beginning of Haskins' success, and his other awards include the International Art Book Competition, Israel in 1969, the One Show Gold Medal, NY in 1974, and the Kodak book of the Year in 1980.
