A very good copy, in the very good rubbed and nicked original dustwrapper. Not price-clipped. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper "To Aubrey / who wrote some of it! / From Ian". S. and I have checked that all the literals you marked have been corrected in the press proof. I have an idea you said you wanted your proof back and therefore return it herewith." Provenance: Aubrey Forshaw, Managing Director of Pan Books, publisher of the James Bond novels in paperback and Ian Fleming’s expert for technical information concerning James Bond’s cars. It was in this respect that he was asked by Fleming to read the proof of On Her Majesty’s Secret Service and correct any errors. "The offending back axle passage" referred to in Michael Howard’s letter appears on page 23, with Aubrey’s corrections in pencil to the margins. Further corrections, suggestions and typographical errors appear in the margins elsewhere, all of which are adopted to the first edition text. An outstanding presentation and association, and genuine working manuscript of the tenth James Bond novel. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request.         The Alexandria Quartet

Faber & Faber London 1962 - This is the limited, and the world’s first, one volume edition of this signature work of Durrell’s. Only 500 copies were issued in 1962 by Faber, of which this is number 198. It is SIGNED by Lawrence Durrell on a limitation page in vermillion ink. This handsome and sturdy volume is bound in orange buckram with bevelled edges, and on the front cover is an indented area, which displays a handprint motif in black. The title is stamped in gilt on an elegant black panel on the spine, which appears to be leather. The spine is a little sunned but is not seriously affected. The top edge is bright gilt, and the endpapers are yellow. It is still in the soft plastic dustwrapper, which is sometimes absent, and often in a poor state if it is present. This one is fresh looking and perfect. The book is in the special black slipcase, with its black and gold diamond pattern, which betrays only slight usage. In the preface the author declared ''It has been possible, for this edition, to correct a number of small slips pointed out by readers and critics, and also to add some small passages which were cut out of the original volumes in the MS. stage. Balthazar and Mountolive both lose half a dozen lines of text. Clea gains a small section, and a new translation from C.P. Cavafy.'' This is the first one volume edition printing, and despite a slight fading to the spine it surely represents a gorgeous heirloom quality in celebration of a masterwork. 2012 is the author’s centenary. In 1957, Durrell published Justine, the first part of what was to become his most famous work. Balthazar followed by Mountolive came out in 1958, and Clea in 1960. The works deal with events before and during the Second World War in the Alexandria. The first three tell essentially the same story from different perspectives. Clea advances the events in time and reaches a conclusion. The Times Literary Supplement review said,"If ever a work bore an instantly recognizable signature on every sentence, this is it." There was some suggestion that Durrell might be nominated for the Nobel, but this did not materialise. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Kennedy Says the U.S. Must Ògrasp the opportunities and meet the challenges which confront us as a nation and as leaders in the free world.Ó

      - Kennedy Says the U.S. Must Ògrasp the opportunities and meet the challenges which confront us as a nation and as leaders in the free world.Ó.In 1962, Kennedy's greatest economic worry was the country's balance-of-payments. The United States was buying more than it was selling - and the international trade deficit of $5 billion dollars weaked the value of the currency, risked inflation, and gave foreign nations the power to claim their debts in gold. (Today it is $763.6 billion. What would JFK think of that!). In order to strengthen the currency and ameliorate these problems, Kennedy needed to boost trade. He wanted the authority to negotiate lower tariffs, and he wanted power, too, to compensate American workers whose jobs would be lost to foreign competition. This was the basis of the Trade Expansion Act, introduced in his January State of the Union Message - and which would eventually see passage nine months later. But in May, the issue was far from settled; here the President stumps for the Act, shoring up support as he praises its benefits.Typed Letter Signed as President, on green White House letterhead, Washington, May 24, 1962. ÒThank you for your telegram in support of the trade program which was presented to me at the dinner of the Coordinating Council of Organizations on International Trade Policy last week. I appreciate your interest and that of your State in the enactment of strong new trade legislation which will enable us to grasp the opportunities and meet the challenges which confront us as a nation and as leaders in the free world.Ó [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Svensk Filmindustri 1962 - Vintage original 28 x 39" (70 x 100 cm.) poster, Sweden. Ingrid Thulin, Gunnar Bjornstrand, Max von Sydow, dir: Ingmar Bergman; Svensk Filmindustri. After the service, he attempts to console a fisherman (Jonas Persson) who is tormented by anxiety, but Tomas can only speak about his own troubled relationship with God. A school teacher (Maerta Lundberg) offers Tomas her love as consolation for his loss of faith. But Tomas resists her love as desperately as she offers it to him. This is the second in Bergman's trilogy of films dealing with man's relationship with God." (IMDb) This is one of two different original Swedish one sheet posters, this one with a red background, and images of the film's four principal actors.         AN UNTITLED UNIQUE PRINTER'S PROOF OF ROCKWELL KENT'S RARE LITHOGRAPH "YOUNG SEAMSTRESS"

[Printed by Burr Miller], [1962].. [1962].. Very good. - sc - An 8-1/8 inch high by 5-1/4 inch wide image printed by Burr Miller on a 13 inch high by 10 inch wide sheet of heavy stock bearing no watermark. The image depicts a young eskimo woman, attired in boots over decoratively patterned pants with her hair in a bun, attentively working on fabric in her hands. Crop marks define the borders of the image and excess ink extends beyond the borders set forth by the 4 corners. There are minor creases to the corners with a horizontal crease across the top of the sheet, not affecting the image. The right edge of the sheet is darkened by narrow burn marks at the upper half edge of the paper. There is a tiny tear near the bottom of the right edge of the sheet. Very good. <p>Provenance: From the estate of bibliophile and pressman Fridolf Johnson, editor of the substantial work "Rockwell Kent: An Anthology of His Work". Fridolf Johnson frequently visited the Kent estate while working on his book. A close personal friend of Rockwell Kent&#39;s widow, Sally, Fridolf was the recipient of numerous gifts, including this printer&#39;s proof. The proof bears the light burn mark consistent with the smoke and heat damage which discolored the edges of other works on paper which were present in Kent&#39;s home during the 1969 fire that claimed the house.<p>In a letter which will accompany the print, the lithograph has been identified by a Rockwell Kent specialist and former director of The Rockwell Kent Legacies as a printer&#39;s proof for the rare edition of only 5 proofs printed by Burr Miller, "differing from the completed lithograph (and secondary offsett print for that matter) in that excess ink extends beyond the borders set forth by the 4 corners." Consistent with this proof being pulled from the same stone as the completed lithograph printed by Burr Miller is the fact that the image is crisper than and is the reverse of the offset prints later produced by Graphic Offset, Inc.<p>According to Dan Burne Jones, there were "Five proofs printed by Burr Miller. The image was then canceled and the stone reground.... [a] second in a series of six prints ... were transferred to offset plates, with the image in reverse and printed on 70 lb. Ivory Millbrand Tint paper by Graphic Offset, Inc., New York, in an edition of one thousand copies for Ivan Oblensky, Inc., for a small portfolio included in the slipcase of the limited edition of Rockwell Kent&#39;s Greenland Journal(1962).

        The Bell Jar

London: Heinemann. 1st Edition. Very Good. SCARCE UNCORRECTED PROOF of the first edition of The Bell Jar. "Few novels have the thematic depth or the rich poetic language of The Bell Jar... [It] exists as one of a number of books to come out of the explosive energy of the 1960s. Like Kesey&#39;s One Flew Over the Cuckoo&#39;s Nest (1962) or Heller&#39;s Catch-22 (1961), Plath&#39;s novel focuses our concern for the individual lost in a society that no longer responds to human needs, where institutions no longer work. In these and other 60s novels, war and madness have become metaphors for the human condition, as hospitals or the army have become both microcosms of and escapes from the insanity of society. The Bell Jar is not only an important feminist initiation novel, but a part of this broader movement in contemporary fiction as well" (David Peck, The Radical Teacher). London: Heinemann, 1962. Octavo, original printed wrappers; custom box. Owner signature on top of front wrapper. Toning to spine and some general soiling, type on front wrapper a little worn. EXTREMELY RARE.
