Slight bit of wear to boards, else tight and quite handsome, with text blocks bright and near pristine. This lovely trio of the collected writings of the Roman poet (43 B.C. -- 17/18 A.D.) includes all of his major works. Facing it in each volume is, interestingly, the custom engraved bookplate of H. Buxton Forman. Forman (1842-1917) was a noted English bibliographer of Keats and Shelley and antiquarian bookseller who entered the ranks of book collecting infamy when he partnered with notorious collector Thomas J. Wise in creating phony literary pamphlets featuring previously-unknown "first appearances" of poems by many noted poets of the day, which were then sold for substantial sums; their large-scale fraud wouldn't be widely known until Graham Pollard and John Carter's 1934 "An Enquiry into the Nature of Certain Nineteenth Century Pamphlets" spelled it all out in detail. Forman's custom bookplate features a steel engraving of a full-bearded young Forman in his study surrounded by books and a bust of Shelley, apparently transcribing a text with quill pen. Below his ownership signature in the first volume, Forman boldly pencils a note: "neat copy containing Erotica Metamorphosis Fastia Tristia etc. Frontispiece after Eisen.

        Cover Her Face

London: Faber and Faber, 1962 First edition, first printing of the author's first novel. Publisher's kelly green cloth, spine lettered in gilt; in the original pictorial dust jacket designed by Charles Mozley. A near fine copy, with a touch of wear to the extremities, very light soiling to the rear board, a hint of offsetting to the endpapers, otherwise bright and clean pages; bright and unclipped dust jacket, with some light crinkling to the spine ends, bright and clean panels. A superb copy. Housed in a custom cloth clamshell box. Cover Her Face is P. D. James' debut crime novel and the first appearance of her character Detective Chief Inspector Adam Dalgliesh, who would be featured in thirteen of James' subsequent novels. Cover Her Face is a murder mystery in which the young, beautiful, and headstrong maid Sally Jupp is found strangled in her bed the morning after a large party. Adam Dalgliesh from Scotland Yard, a detective with the notable hobby of writing poetry, must identify her killer from a household of suspects, all of whom have reason to wish her dead. Like Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple, James' Adam Dalgliesh, based on one of the author's former schoolteachers, is odd enough to be distinctive without being so eccentric that readers cannot relate to him. In a 2009 interview with NPR, James explains, "I gave him the personal qualities I very much admire…I made him courageous but not foolhardy, very intelligent, sensitive and compassionate, but not sentimental." Indeed, strong character development is part of the draw of James' crime novels, which are suspenseful puzzlers that focus on the mystery of the crime rather than an over-embellished detective figure.. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

Elegy for Young Lovers [opera]. Autograph musical sketches in full score, 8 pp., signed by the composer in full and dated March 3, 1962

Small folio, 333 x 226 mm. Unbound. One signature (4 bifolia) of 26-staff "Sünova Nr. 11" music paper; all leaves are left blank to the inside (1v., 2v., 3v., 4v., 5r., 6r., 7r., 8r.). Notated in pencil, with annotations in red ball-point pen and blue pencil to f. 4r. Titling to first page: "VIII. Toni and Elizabeth." Tempo: "Andante solenne"; metronome mark: "[quarter note]=80." Text underlay in English. Various additional annotations in Henze's hand, partly in English, partly in German.Manuscript dedication to foot of final page in green ink (ball- point): "Skizzen zum Schluss der 'Elegy' Teli [=Schachteli] zur Erinnerung an den Winter [19]60-61 in Berlin und mit unendlichem Dank. Hans Werner Henze 3 März 1962" [Sketches for the conclusion of the "Elegy" for Schachteli in memory of Winter 1960-61 in Berlin and with infinite thanks. Hans Werner Henze, March 3, 1962].Enclosed with the autograph is a fragment,(ca. 76 x 37 mm.) of similar music manuscript paper with a brief, texted musical quotation from the opera ("Gregor, it's time" - from act 2, scene XII, measure 960, slightly altered) to recto, signed Werner Schachteli, all in metallic gold ink.Small stain to final page. In very good condition overall. . The present manuscript includes sketches for the final three scenes of the opera, i.e., no. 7 ("Man and wife"), no. 8 ("Toni and Elizabeth"), and no. 9 ("Elegy for young lovers") of the third act; all sketches seem to represent the same stage of the work's genesis. The bifolia are actually folded incorrectly, most probably by Henze himself (as suggested by the placement of the inscription). In terms of musical continuity, the correct sequence of pages would be: 8v. (end of no. 7), 1r. (beginning of no. 8), 7v., 2r., 5v., 4r., 6v. (beginning of no. 9, without title), 3r. The music is continuous within each bifolium. The manuscript was owned by Werner Schachteli, to whom Henze inscribed it.This opera was Henze's first collaboration with W.H. Auden (1907-73) and Chester Kallman (1921-75). Henze composed it between 1959 and 1961. It was first performed in Schwetzingen, Germany, on May 20, 1961, in a German version by Ludwig Landgraf (pseudonym of Prince Ludwig von Hessen, 1908-68), Werner Schachteli, and the composer, under the title "Elegie für junge Liebende." The premiere of the original English version followed at Glyndebourne on July 13, 1961, albeit with scenes 7 and 8 from the third act omitted. The score was published by Schott in Mainz in the same year. Henze revised the opera in 1987."Separating himself from the avant-garde, [Henze] devoted himself to genres many of his colleagues regarded as outmoded: opera, song, the symphony. By the early 1960s... Henze was an international figure with enthusiastic admirers in the United States... 'Elegy for Young Lovers,' to a libretto by W.H. Auden and Chester Kallman, [was] about a poet's use of his family and acquaintances in his art. The story's alpine setting offered Mr. Henze the opportunity for glistening, radiant music, scored for a chamber orchestra. The work...has been more widely seen than any of the composer's other operas." Paul Griffiths in his obituary on Henze, The New York Times, October 29, 2012, p. D8."Auden's and Kallman's words inspired [Henze] to produce moments of hauntingly beautiful and complex music... One of the opera's most interesting features is its identification of individual characters with their own solo instrument. Almost half a century after its premiere, the music of Elegy still sounds modern." Hugh Canning, Opera, July 2010, p. 88.

Gell-Mann was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1969 "for his contributions and discoveries concerning the classification of elementary particles and their interactions". This paper demonstrates the "introduction of SU(3) single-octet structure of the known mesons and octet-decuplet structure for the baryons. [and] predicts the Omega- Hyperon" There is one earlier introduction of these concepts, in a private institutional paper CTSL-20 which (while quite rare) was printed separately and later reprinted in "The Eightfold Way: A Review" much later (1964). As such, this is the earliest obtainable and best work related to the Gell-Mann's Nobel Prize. See Ezhela, et al, pgs 181 and 186-7.

1962-63 First edition. P. G. ("Plum") WODEHOUSE'S ORIGINAL TYPED MANUSCRIPT WITH EXTENSIVE NOTES, and with the original, working title of "Great Possessions." The eventual book was first published in the U. S. in 1963 under the title BIFFEN'S MILLIONS and later in the U. K. as FROZEN ASSETS. The manuscript was given to its current owner by Wodehouse and has never appeared on the market. In addition to the 222-page, heavily emended manuscript, there are also about 200 pages of notes by Plum. In an interview in the last year of his life, Wodehouse, commenting on his preparatory work, said that it usually ran to "about four hundred pages of notes. I write down everything that comes into my mind, and about half of it is about characters that aren't in the book at all." In this case there are 58 pages dated June 2, 1962 through Aug 28, 1962, all of which are full-page handwritten notes by PGW; another 45 to 50 pages labeled "Sequence," probably 2/3rds of which are handwritten, dated from July through November 1962; a further 53 pages also labeled "Sequence," dated Feb 19, 1963; and another 40 undated pages of notes, 30 of which are handwritten. A number of Wodehouse manuscripts came to auction in the 1990's and since then there has been just one other, in 2003. (The latter was a manuscript of 170 pages with about 50 pages of handwritten and typed notes and a notebook with 35 handwritten pages of notes. It brought about $24,000.) Minor wear to edges, as might be expected. Housed in custom clamshell case with leather spine label.

[Stockholm: Royal Dramatic Theatre, nd. but ca. 1962].. Cloth backed boards, printed and manuscript labels. Quarto. 192 leaves, mimeographed on rectos only. Corners bumped, slight sunning at edges, otherwise fine. Mimeographed playscript of the highly important Swedish translation, from the unpublished manuscript, by Karl Ragnar Gierow and Sven Barthel. The history of this translation is fundamental to the history of the text eventually published in English by Yale University Press in 1964, and is discussed by Donald Gallup on pp. 291-5 of PIGEONS ON THE GRANITE (New Haven 1988). In summary, O'Neill had left the play unfinished, and specified that the script was to be destroyed in the event of his death, but a revised typescript had been deposited inadvertently with other papers in the Beinecke Library in 1951. In 1957, Carlotta O'Neill apprised Gierow, who had staged a successful Swedish adaptation of LONG DAY'S JOURNEY..., of its existence, and he undertook the task of an edited, translated adaptation which, although featuring excisions, remained true to what remained of O'Neill's text. When the play was produced in November of 1962, the consensus was that the play merited publication in English, and the establishment of the English text was undertaken by Donald Gallup by collating the original typescript, the Swedish translation, and the Swedish adaptation for the stage. The text here present would appear to be that of the verbatim Swedish translation by Barthel and Girow, as it includes O'Neill's descriptions of characters and sets, as well as the three scene format of Act One (which had been compressed in the adaptation). However, the epilogue, which was not included in the Swedish adaptation, does not appear to be included here. There are a few manuscript corrections or insertions in an unknown hand scattered throughout, several amounting to the addition of a line or two. A highly important script of significance transcending that of most simple translations.

MGM 1962 - Screenplay written by Helen Deutsch November 20, 1962 [but with revisions dated up through October 1963]. 129 pp., studio generated mimeograph. In a special black leather binding, with the title and star Harve Presnell's name embossed on the front cover, and with title also embossed on spine. Eighteen (18) vintage photos from the film are tipped in, and one additional photo is laid in loosely, along with a folded certificate on parchment-like paper from the Women of the Motion Picture Industry of New Orleans, recognizing Presnell's contribution to the film. There is one minor stain to bottom inner front cover, else binding and script are just ABOUT FINE, the loosely laid-in parchment piece has some marginal stains, and is VERY GOOD. THE UNSINKABLE MOLLY BROWN is one of the classic American musical films of the 1960s. Presnell, who created the male lead role of Johnny "Leaadville" Brown in this show's original run on Broadway, also played this part when MGM filmed it, this time with Debbie Reynolds as Molly Brown.
