Heinemann, London 1962 - Burgess, Anthony. A CLOCKWORK ORANGE. Kondon: Heinemann, 1962. First Edition. The correct first issue in black boards & first state Dustwrapper [price 16s] & with the requisite deep flaps [10,5 cm front & 11cm rear]. A near fine or better copy in a very bright dustwrapper showing light use at the extremities. A short closed tear of 5 cm from the base of the spine has been internally mended. Short harmless light pen mark on the bottom edge. A very nice copy. There are three Heinemann issues - The first two were in black boards - the first priced at 16s the second priced at 18s. Thirdly in the late 60s the last copies were bound up in purple boards with a decimal price sticker. The first issue is very uncommon. The author's controversial tour-de-force. Excerpts from the first two chapters of the novel were dramatized and broadcast on BBC TV's program 'Tonight', in 1962 (now lost, believed wiped). A 1965 film by Andy Warhol entitled 'Vinyl' was an adaptation of the Burgess' novel and famously, very successfully filmed in 1971 by Stanley Kubrick - Withdrawn in Britain for fear of causing copycat violence.         ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST (signed + frog stamp)

VIKING Press, New York 1962 - Viking (1962) 1974. NY. 311 pages. 8vo. The 1st/1st of this title originally published by Viking hit the presses in 1962. This copy was printed in 1974 and copyright page states Twenty-second printing June 1974. DJ price of $6.00 intact on flap. Also states Viking Compass Edition Issued in 1964 by the Viking Press. This copy is BOLDLY SIGNED by KEN KESEY in a gold paint pen on front-free endpaper. For --, Ken Kesey. Ken Kesey also stamped a large multi-colored frog stamp to same endpaper. Book is about fine in clean, bright green cloth with 4 sharp corners. Yellow topstain. The only thing holding this book back from being flawless is a minor flaw: 3 bottom page edges having a tiny chip or folded-up chip (tiny). This flaw hardly detracts from this excellent copy. Most minor shelf-wear to edges. Flaws are overstated. This book is in excellent, crisp condition. DJ is in the famous design as the 1st printing with cover design/art by Paul Bacon. DJ is bright and colorful. Black edges are nearly impossible to keep free of flaws and this copy is no different. Some of the black color has rubbed off at corners and along contours. As a result of the rubbing on DJ, we have graded it VG++ . Of the few signed Viking copies available, this is a beautiful book and a fine alternative to the signed 1st printing which will set you back a cool $ 7K. John McDonald, a writer, had been an assistant to Leon Trotsky during his exile in Mexico; Dorothy Eisner, a painter, was also in Mexico at the time and made several portraits of Trotsky. Walker Evans and John McDonald became collaborators on articles when McDonald joined the staff of Fortune in 1945.         Symmetries of Baryons and Mesons

American Inst, Lancaster, PA and New York, NY 1962 - FIRST EDITION of Murray Gell-Mann's Nobel-Prize winning work on the discovery of the "Eightfold Way" "Gell-Mann, as naturalist, collector, and categorizer, was well primed to interpret the exploding particle universe of the 1960s. New technology in the accelerators- liquid hydrogen bubble chambers and computers for automating the analysis of collision tracks- seemed to have spilled open a bulky canvas bag from which nearly a hundred distinct particles had now tumbled forth. Gell-Mann and, independently, an Israeli theorist, Yuval Ne'eman, found a way in 1961 to organize the various symmetries of spins and strangeness into a single scheme. It was a group, in the mathematicians' sense of the word, known as SU(3), though Gell-Mann quickly and puckishly dubbed it the Eightfold Way. It was like an intricate translucent object which, when held to the light, would reveal families of eight or ten or possibly twenty-seven particles- and they would be different, though overlapping, families, depending on which way one chose to view it. The Eightfold Way was a new periodic table- the previous century's triumph in classifying and thus exposing the hidden regularities in a similar number of disparate 'elements.' But it was also a more dynamic object. The operations of group theory were like special shuffles of a deck of cards or the twists of a Rubik's cube. "Much of SU(3)'s power came from the way it embodied a concept increasingly central to the high-energy theorist's way of working: the concept of inexact symmetry, almost symmetry, near symmetry, or- the term that won out- broken symmetry. The particle world was full of near misses in its symmetries, a dangerous problem, since it seemed to permit an ad hoc escape route whenever an expected relationship failed to match. Broken symmetry implied a process, a change in status. Many of the broken symmetries of particle physics came to seem like choices the universe made when it condensed from a hot chaos into cooler matter, spiked as it is with so many hard-edged, asymmetrical contingencies. "Once again Gell-Mann trusted his scheme enough to predict, as a consequence of broken symmetry, a specific hitherto-unseen particle. This, the omega minus, duly turned up in 1964- a thirty-three-experimenter team had to canvass more than one million feet of photographs- and Gell-Mann's Nobel Prize followed five years later" (James Gleick, Genius). Particle Physics, One Hundred Years of Discoveries: "Introduction of the SU(3) singlet-octet structure of the known mesons and octet-decuplet structure for the baryons. Prediction of the ?- hyperon. Nobel prize to M. Gell-Mann awarded in 1969 'for his contributions and discoveries concerning the classification of elementary particles and their reactions'." NOTE: Gell-Mann first introduced the concept of the Eightfold Way in a 1961 Cal. Inst. Tech Report (CTSL-20) before developing his ideas more fully in his famous paper in The Physical Review. In: The Physical Review, Vol 125, pp. 1067-1084. Lancaster, PA and New York, NY: American Institute of Physics, 1962. Quarto, original printed wrappers; custom box. A little spotting to spine, otherwise fine. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
