Design for the mural at the entrance to the Detroit Public Library

Detroit, Mich., 1962. Gouache painting. 24 x 63.5 inches. (61 x 160 cm.). On illustration board mounted on a larger board with pencil notations relative to the future mural on the margins of the mount. Undulating due to past moisture. Literature: Millard Sheets. One-Man Renaissance by Janice Lovoos and Edmund Penney, pp. 73-74. Mural reproduced on p. 73. The commission resulted from Sheets winning the 1962 New York National Academy of Design's Edward Austin Abbey Competition. Some of the text beneath the images is different than in the final mural. For example, in the painting, a text by Nietzsche is at the far right and this is replaced by a text from Whitman in the actual mural. From the estate of Millard Sheets. Authenticated by Tony Sheets, the artist's son, on the verso. Better image available. Exhibited at: A Tapestry of Life. The World of Millard Sheets. The Millard Sheets Center for the Arts at Fairplex, Pomona, California. September 2007.

        Symmetries of Baryons and Mesons

American Institute of Physics, Lancaster, PA 1962 - First Edition. [2], 1130 pages. Light brown buckram binding with gilt spine lettering, bumped at head of spine. Physical Review 125 Jan-Feb 1962 (entire volume offered). Ex-library, properly de-accessioned, with minor markings. Cloth. This volume contains the article "Symmetries of Baryons and Mesons" by Murray Gell-Mann, found on pages 1067-1084. Gell-Mann was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1969 "for his contributions and discoveries concerning the classification of elementary particles and their interactions". This paper demonstrates the "introduction of SU(3) single-octet structure of the known mesons and octet-decuplet structure for the baryons. [and] predicts the Omega- Hyperon" There is one earlier introduction of these concepts, in a private institutional paper CTSL-20 which (while quite rare) was printed separately and later reprinted in "The Eightfold Way: A Review" much later (1964). As such, this is the earliest obtainable and best work related to the Gell-Mann's Nobel Prize. See Ezhela, et al, pgs 181 and 186-7. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Confessions of an Opium Eater (Original screenplay for the 1962 film)

Allied Artists, Glendale, CA 1962 - Producer-director Albert Zugsmith's copy of the script for the 1962 film, "Confessions of an Opium Eater," produced and directed by Zugsmith, written for the screen by Robert Hill, and starring Vincent Price. Based on the 1822 book, "Confessions of an English Opium Eater," by Thomas DeQuincey. Very freely based upon DeQuincey's book, "Confessions of an Opium Eater" is set in San Francisco during the Tong Wars of the 1800s. Lotus is one of a group of women kidnapped from China and brought to the United States, where they are to be traded in exchange for precious opium. Lotus and her compatriots are rescued by mysterious benefactors and are spirited away. Soon after, DeQuincey sneaks into Chinatown and contacts a merchant by the name of Chin Foon. Both men share the mark of the Moon Serpent, signifying that they work for the enigmatic Ling Tang, who is the mastermind behind the human auctions. Foon instructs DeQuincey to locate Lotus. He finds her but rather than handing her over to Foon, he tries to escape with her. His treachery is discovered, and in a "Yojimbo"-esque twist, admits he is working for both sides in the Tong conflict. He escapes and, stumbling through the bowels of Chinatown, discovers many other bizarre secrets. He also learns that another of Tang's employees, Ruby Low, is not as loyal as supposed. DeQuincey continues prowling around Chinatown; obviously, he has some sort of plan in mind--but what is it? And who is he really working for? [The AllMovie Guide]. Light green studio wrappers, with titles in manual type on the front wrapper, dated February 16, 1961. Holograph pencil timing notations at the margins of every page, with Zugsmith's signature in blue marker on the front wrapper. Title page present, with a date of February 16, 1961, with screenwriter credits for Robert Hill. 111 pages, with blue, pink, and green revision pages throughout, dated variously between 7/11/1961 and 7/31/1961. Pages Near Fine, wrapper Near Fine, bound with two gold brads. One of the more interesting "eastern intrigue" adaptations of the 1950s and 1960s, with the appealing quality of having a classic literary source.Martin 79. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        Catch-22

Jonathan Cape, London 1962 - First Impression (no further printings noted). 8vo: 6],443,[1]pp. Publisher's red cloth, spine stamped in gilt (still brillant), top edge stained green; second-state dust jacket (with blurbs from four authors and the New York Times on back panel), illustrated by Germano Facetti and priced 21s. Almost Fine (faded top edge, spotted fore- and bottom edges), in about Fine jacket (dust-soiled back panel and spine-panel folds). (Time 100) The catch-22 in Heller's debut novel (in which, incidentally, the phrase was coined), set in the closing months of World War II, is that "anyone who wants to get out of combat duty isn't really crazy." Hence, pilots who request a mental-fitness evaluation are sane, and therefore must fly in combat. At the same time, if an evaluation is not requested by the pilot, he will never receive one and thus can never be found insane, in which case he must also fly in combat. That's the catch. According to Wikipedia, the number has no particular significance; it was chosen, by Heller and his publishers, for euphony. Time called the novel a "bitter, anguished joke . . . that embraces the existential absurdity of war without ever quite succumbing to it." N. B. Bella dedica e firma autografe dell'Autore (Inscribed and signed by the Author). (Oh luz!. From Wikipedia: The Texas City Disaster was the deadliest industrial accident in U.S. history. The incident took place on April 16, 1947, and began with a mid-morning fire on board the French-registered vessel SS Grandcamp which was docked in the Port of Texas City. The fire detonated approximately 2,300 tons of ammonium nitrate and the resulting chain reaction of fires and explosions killed at least 581 people. These events also triggered the first ever class action lawsuit against the United States government, under the then-recently enacted Federal Tort Claims Act (FTCA), on behalf of 8,485 victims.         I don't see how these nurses can fail to win if Selwyn puts his foot down as firmly as he did with the dockers.

1962 1962 - Sheet size: 192 × 140 mm. Stamped on verso for publication in the Daily Mail, 23 May 1962, and with pencil reproduction instructions recto. Pen and black ink with blue pencil crayon on wove paper. The Macmillan government's "pay pause" continued to sour labour relations. A month later Selwyn Lloyd, the Chancellor, was to lose his job in the "night of the long knives." The cartoons and illustrations of Nicolas Bentley (1907-1978) were part of the warp and weft of English popular culture in the 1950s and 60s. Never savage, though often waspishly accurate and exuding an urbane air of amusement at the foibles of his fellows, Bentley's work was familiar to the public from a wide variety of publications. Between 1952 and 1954 he drew regular cartoons for the weekly Time and Tide, and after that for the daily News Chronicle. Between 1958 and 1962 he drew topical cartoons for the Daily Mail under the title "Watch My Line." He also drew many portraits, in black and white line, of famous people, for various papers, including over sixty for the Sunday Telegraph, which began publication in February 1961.

        FOR LOVE POEMS 1950-1960

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, [1962].. Gilt black cloth. Cloth a bit dull and dusty, rear endsheet a bit finger smudged, otherwise a very good copy, without dust jacket. First edition, clothbound issue. An excellent association copy, inscribed prior to formal publication by Creeley to Fielding Dawson and his wife: "for Fee and Barbara - the first copy - with my love and hope for your marriage, Bob. Feb. 26, 1962." Formal publication took place on April 9th, over five weeks later than the inscription. From the first impression, 988 copies were initially bound in cloth, with an additional 250 copies from the inventory of the wrapperbound issue bound up in cloth in Fall of 1963. Creeley's and Dawson's creative association and friendship extended back at least as early as their days at Black Mountain, and intersected over the following decades in little magazines, readings and books, Dawson illustrating Creeley's IF YOU (1959) and Creeley contributing an introduction to KRAZY KAT ... (1969). NOVIK 11.
