The book details the Battle of Guilford Court House, a small but decisive battle in Greensboro, North Carolina during the Revolutionary War that forced the British to invade Virginia, helping undermine the British control of the South and leading Cornwallis to Yorktown and surrender. .

Force of Cirumstance and Other Poems [inscribed by the poet to a close friend]

London: Routledge and Kegan Paul, 1962 Book. Near Fine. Hardcover. Signed by Author(s). 1st Edition. xii, pp 54 The first edition of Jeremy Prynne's first volume of verse which has been inscribed by the author to one of his closest friends at the time of publication. Prynne's inscription appears on the first blank, written in his faintly calligraphic hand and reads: 'For Tony and Nicole Jeremy'. Tony is the novelist Anthony Ward who was a Cambridge contemporary and fellow member of the Prospect group. Ward inherited the editorship of Prospect Magazine from Elaine Feinstein and only about a year before the publication of this volume had handed it on to Prynne himself. The book is near fine with just a little dustiness along the top edge. The jacket is browned and nicked with a few millimeters of loss at the head of the spine. The poems in this volume have been subsequently repudiated by Prynne making this a particularly scarce edition to find signed.         Dead Cert

Michael Joseph 1962 - Published by Michael Joseph, London in 1962. This is a first edition, first impression hard back. A near fine copy in a very good dust wrapper. The book itself is free from any marks, smudges or inscriptions. The pages are clean and white with no sign of browning or other discolouration. Overall it is a book which defies its age. There are two small imperfections which prevent this book achieving a rating of ‘fine’. First, there is one tiny foxing spot on the vertical edge of the text block; this foxing has a 1mm bleed into no more than 6 of the pages. It is visible on these few pages only on very close examination. Second, the book is slightly cocked as a result, we believe, of poor shelving. The fine condition of the pages points away from a conclusion that the cocking is a result of extensive use. There is the usual offsetting to the end-papers. The dust jacket is the first, correct state, unclipped and shows the correct price of 15/-. The dust jacket is in remarkable condition considering its age and the poor quality of paper used. It has suffered only minor edge loss over the 50 years it has been protecting the colour and vibrancy of the gilt lettering to the spine. The front and rear boards are consequently in perfect condition. On the fault side, there is slight age toning to much of the rear wrapper and to the forward edge of the front wrapper. The spine of the dust jacket is slightly bumped The corners are sharp and the spine lettering un-faded with the usual exception of the very bottom of the spine where the pink words "Michael Joseph" are faded but still visible on close inspection. The dust wrapper is now protected by a clear, removable, acid free acetate sleeve. This is an iconic publication. It was the second book and first novel written by Dick Francis. The sales of his first book (an autobiography) were not particularly strong thus the first impression of this book was limited by the publisher. This, together with the relatively poor standard of paper used, makes ‘Dead Cert’ one of the most difficult modern first editions to locate. We have handled 4 copies over the last eight years and this copy is the best of them. It is wholly original and complete. There are no repairs, touch ups or bookplates. It has been sold only twice. Once to the original buyer, the second time to us. A rare opportunity to acquire a gem. The images you see are high resolution scans of the actual item. Please request further scans if you wish. We will be happy to oblige. The book will be dispatched via the Royal Mail in protective packaging. We do not charge postage to buyers within the UK. Those from outside the UK are asked to contact us before purchasing. We offer a 7 day no quibble full refund if the item is not as described and shown. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
