The Old Man's Boy Grows Older

London: Hamish Hamilton. (1962). First. Stated second impression (of the English edition). Bottom corners a little bumped else near fine in a bit tired, good plus dustwrapper with a modest external tape repair, some soiling, nicks and tears. Nicely Inscribed by the author on the half-title: "For Beth who has made the old man's boy grow younger -- Love, Bob." A book which, along with the first book in the series (The Old Man and the Boy), has assumed something like cult status for its nostalgic reminiscences of a North Carolina boyhood and the influence of a gruff old grandfather.         King Rat

Boston: Little, Brown and Company,, 1962. Octavo. Original buff cloth, titles to spine in dark green, publisher's device to front board in blind, top edge dark green. With the dust jacket. A few slight marks to boards; an excellent copy in the lightly rubbed jacket with slightly toned spine, a few nicks and chips to extremities and short closed tear with minor loss to foot of spine. First edition, first impression. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "This is for Larry Kramer - not because he is a friend of Mr. Big (Little, Brown) - but because he liked a story whispered to me on an ancient wind - and because, too, of understanding. Salam al likim [approximate phonetization of traditional Arabic salutation], Oct. 29 '62. Jamie." Kramer later rose to prominence in the 1970s as an author, gay rights activist, and founder of ACT UP. Kramer and Clavell would have met when Kramer, then an unknown, was working in Hollywood rewriting scripts for Columbia Pictures. King Rat was written by Clavell in an intense period of three months in 1960. "The book was also a catharsis for Clavell, as it told of a power struggle among a group of Japanese prisoners of war. It was an immediate best-seller and the first of what Clavell called his Asian saga" (ODNB).

        Cover Her Face.

Faber and Faber, London 1962 - First edition of the author's first book. Octavo, original green cloth. Light shelfwear to the bottom cloth, near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Signed by the author on the title page with the added words, "And when that happened the right words would be found." The inscription is the final line of this novel. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. A superior example with a nice inscription from the author. "Cover Her Face was, James has said, written simply to try out her powers in fiction as a preliminary to attempting the novel proper. Its immediate success, however-snapped up at once by the prestigious British publishers Faber and Faber, and well reviewed on publication-caused her to try her hand again at the detective story, putting even more of the novel's concern with the workings of the human mind, and indeed of the soul, into its pages. Already present in that first attempt were many of the hallmarks of her subsequent writing. There was the fastidious prose, beautifully accurate and not without complex plots Add to these qualities a gift for forward-looking storytelling and, above all, the creation of a detective you like and want to go on liking in Adam Dalgliesh, policeman and plausible poet" (Keating, 40). Spine label a bit frayed along the edges, some slipcase rubbing along the extreme edges of the wrappers, otherwise near fine in publisher's pictorial slipcase. First edition of this ambitious undertaking by one of the foremost German woodcut artists of the post-WWII era. This work is comprised of sixteen original woodcuts of stylized apes printed in black (and one in black and red), juxtaposed with typographical experiments. From a total edition of three hundred numbered copies, this is one of sixty deluxe copies with the woodcuts signed in pencil by the artist, and with a separate special printing on Japanese paper of the woodcut for the upper wrapper, signed by the artist in the margin.

        The Spy Who Loved Me

London: Jonathan Cape,, 1962. Octavo. Original brown boards, spine lettered in silver, dagger design to front board in silver and blind, red endpapers. With the dust jacket. Spine gently rolled, tips a little bumped, minor abrasion to front free endpaper, internally fine; an excellent copy in the jacket with toned spine, 4 cm short closed tear to head of slightly spotted rear panel, and a few nicks to extremities. First edition, first impression. In many ways this is one of the most ambitious of Fleming's Bond books. It purports to be the first hand testimony of a 23 year old Canadian woman with whom Bond has an ill-fated affair. In time-honoured literary tradition Fleming claims to have been sent Michel's manuscript account of which he is merely the editor. Michel therefore gets a spurious credit as co-author on the title page. This novel is the only Bond book to be written in the first person.

The Dark Monarch A Portrait From Within.

London: The Galley Press, Uncorrected Proof Copy, 1962. - "This is a rough and uncorrected proof and should not be regarded as a finished copy in either printing or binding." 204 pp. paper covers, in good condition. With drawings by the author. The author's note says that "The Dark Monarch is psychobiographic, in the widest sense." Berlin, 1911-1999, was a dancer, painter, sculptor, writer and poet, one of the last surviving members of the St Ives School in Cornwall. This was his second novel and its motive was, in some degree, to vent personal anger over the hypocrisy of an over-close competitive art colony. The book was published and 575 copies were sold before its withdrawal from sale after no fewer than four libel actions by members of that colony. Copies were pulped, with probably only around 100 surviving. This is an uncorrected proof copy. It is therefore an interesting survival and has to be considered very scarce.

        Paradise Reclaimed [Signed] [Paradisarheimt; Undirritaðu]

Thomas Y. Crowell Company, 1962, Hardcover, Book Condition: Fine, Dust Jacket Condition: fine, First editionA Fine copy of the first American edition, first printing (slight pushing to the spine ends, slight loss to publisher's name on the spine, small sticker shadow to the rear free endpaper), in a Fine dust jacket (spine lightly toned), SIGNED BY HALLDOR LAXNESS on the title page; a novel centered on the Mormon missionary involvement in Iceland. During the 19th Century, Mormon missionaries came to Iceland and converted a small number of Icelanders to Mormonism. These converts then founded the first Icelandic community outside of Iceland when, in 1855, they emigrated to America and founded the community of Spanish Fork, Utah. [The Mormon missionary endeavor to Iceland did not succeed and, as of 2013's end, only 185 Mormons lived in Iceland.]Halldor Laxness won the 1955 Nobel Prize in Literature "for his vivid epic power which has renewed the great narrative art of Iceland", making him the first (and, as of the day of this listing, the only) Icelander ever to win the Prize. In our experience, signed copies of trade editions of Laxness' work (as opposed to Limited Editions which are called to be signed) are not terribly common to the market, and signed copies of this work by Halldor Laxness are quite uncommon. A Fine copy, SIGNED BY HALLDOR LAXNESS. QUITE SCARCE.

        The Middle Passage

(London): Deutsch. (1962). The first book of nonfiction by the Nobel Prize-winning author, which began a long string of successful and influential writings in social history, particularly with respect to the Caribbean and India, the native lands of the author and his forebears. This book is both a travelogue and an extended essay on the legacy of slavery and the slave trade: "the middle passage" was the name given to the route the slave ships took between Africa and the Caribbean. Inscribed by Naipaul to his publisher, Andre Deutsch: "For Andre/ V.S. Naipaul/ London March 15 1963." This was Naipaul's fifth book overall, and Deutsch had been his publisher for each of them, beginning with The Mystic Masseur, in 1957. Minor bowing to boards; a near fine copy in a good dust jacket, with wear to the edges and folds and with foxing and heavy tape-strengthening on the verso. Someone has written the number "2" at the top of the spine. Now protected in a custom clamshell case. An association copy of the highest order. First Edition. Hardcover.

        The Structure of Scientific Revolutions.

(Chicago and London, University of Chicago Press, 1962). Royal8vo. Orig. printed wrappers. In: "International Encyclopedia of Unified Science", Volume II, Number 2. Top and lower part of spine with a tears and light miscolouring to wrappers. Otherwise a fine and clean copy. (I-VI)VII-XV,172 pp.. First edition of Kuhn's landmark publication - "one of the most influential books in recent intellectual history" - which became an epoch-making event in the history, philosophy, and sociology of scientific knowledge and triggered an ongoing worldwide assessment and reaction in and outside those scholarly communities. "Kuhn's 1962 seminal work, [the present], has become a modern classic [...]. Nearly half a century after Kuhn's shadow hangs over almost every field of intellectual inquiry." (Southgate, God, Humanity and the Cosmos, p. 99).The changes that occur in politics, society and business are often expressed in Kuhnian terms: The terms "paradigm" and "paradigm shift" have become such notorious clichés that they are viewed as effectively without of content, these, however, originates from Kuhn's thesis.Kuhn's central thesis is that scientific 'progress' over the long term shows more a pattern of occasional dramatic and total transformation in our understanding of the world, what he refers to as 'paradigm' shifts, than it does one of steady development within an enduring framework of understading." (Ibid.).This was viewed by postmodern and post-structuralist thinkers as having called into question the enterprise of science by demonstrating that scientific knowledge is dependent on the culture and historical context of scientists rather than on their adherence to a specific, definable method. In this regard Kuhn is considered a precursor to the more radical thinking of Paul Feyerabend.Kuhn's work has also been regarded as distort the separation between scientific and non-scientific enterprises, because it describes the mechanism of scientific progress without call upon any idealized scientific method or scientific terminology that is capable of distinguishing science from non-science. "In his famous book The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, first published in 1962, Kuhn helped destroy the popular image of science according to which science steadily and incrementally progresses toward a true and complete picture of reality. Relying on historical case studies, Kuhn argued that, ruptured by scientific revolutions, scientific development was discontinuous and noncumulative and that scientific activity before and after a revolution was in some ways incommensurable, lacking a common measure. In this way Kuhn not only formed a startling picture of science, but also initiated a new way of doing philosophy of science informed by the history of science. The Structure of Scientific Revolutions opens with the sentence, "History, if viewed as a repository for more than anecdote or chronology, could produce a decisive transformation in the image of science by which we are now possessed" (1970, p. 1). According to that image, science progresses toward truth in a linear fashion, each new theory incorporating the old one as a special case. Scientific progress is due to the scientific method, whereby theories are tested against observations and experiments; those that fail are disconfirmed or get eliminated and those that pass the tests are considered to be confirmed, or at least not yet falsified. The main thesis of Kuhn's book was that development in mature sciences typically goes through two consecutive phases: normal and revolutionary. Normal science is a paradigm-governed activity of puzzle solving. Based on settled consensus of the scientific community, normal scientific activity has little room for novelty that transcends the bounds of the paradigm. A paradigm provides a concrete model (called an "exemplar") for solving problems it has set out. Kuhn called these problems "puzzles" because the paradigm assures the members of the scientific community that with sufficient skill and ingenuity they can be solved within its resources. Thus, in case of failure to solve a puzzle it is the individual scientist, not the paradigm, that is to be blamed. When, however, puzzles resist persistent attempts at solution, they turn into anomalies; and anomalies lead to a crisis when they accumulate. Crisis is marked by a loss of confidence in the paradigm and a search for an alternative one. Rival accounts proliferate, the most fundamental commitments about nature get questioned, and in the end, the scientific community embraces the most promising alternative as the new paradigm. A scientific revolution has occurred. Consequently, a new period of normal science begins, and a similar cycle of normal science-crisis-revolution follows.Scientists working under rival paradigms often talk past each other and experience a breakdown in communication. The switch from one paradigm to another is very much like a conversion experience rather than a rational choice dictated mechanically by scientific methodology. Furthermore, much that has been accepted as true is discarded, making it impossible to say that the new paradigm brings us closer to truth. Not surprisingly, Structure sent shock waves through the philosophical community. Kuhn was accused of robbing science of its rationality and objectivity, turning it into a kind of mob psychology; he was charged with relativism, subjectivism, and outright idealism. Normal science was said to be dangerously dogmatic. The notion of "paradigm" was held to be too vague, lacking a definite meaning."This, however, does not change the fact that it is the most important and influential work in scientific history: it was the most frequently cited work in the period 1976-83 and the Times Literary Supplement labeled it one of "The Hundred Most Influential Books Since the Second World War."

Grove Press, New York 1962 - First Printing, one of 3,500 copies. Octavo; black cloth and paper-covered boards, with titles stamped in gilt on spine; black topstain; dustjacket; 255pp, [1]. Fine in a very Near Fine dustjacket, unclipped, with a single tiny tear at base of spine. Together with a Fine example of the publisher's 16pp prospectus. In 1962, Grove Press issued a promotional booklet to accompany the November 20, 1962 American publication of 'Naked Lunch,' a scarce and desirable piece of ephemera. Publisher Barney Rosset printed the prospectus with an obscenity trial in mind, with the entire document reading like a legal argument to establish 'Naked Lunch‘s' literary merit before a courtroom. The pamphlet opens with a short essay by Terry Southern, followed by a critical piece by E.S. Seldon. The remainder of the pamphlet contains an eight page selection from the novel. A terrific piece of ephemera that is rarely offered together with the novel, and one that is essential to understanding the early publication history of 'Naked Lunch,' the establishment of the book’s critical reception, and the novel’s many court battles over the years. To the best of our knowledge, the two essays contained within have not been printed in any other format. A superior copy of this Beat Generation cornerstone, and basis for the bizarre 1991 David Cronenberg film starring Peter Weller, Judy Davis, and Ian Holm. Maynard & Miles A2.b.
