Call for the Dead. A Novel of Intrigue by John Le Carre.

New York, Walker and Company, 1962.. First American Edition of the author's first book. 8°. 192 pages. Original Hardcover (green cloth) with original dustjacket in protective Mylar. Very good+ condition with only minor signs of external wear. Dustjacket in very good or better condition with minor chip to upper spine of the jacket only. Subtle blindstamp-exlibris of preowner to titlepage.. Call for the Dead is John le Carre's first novel, published in 1961. It introduces George Smiley, the most famous of le Carre's recurring characters, in a story about East German spies inside Great Britain. The book starts with a chapter describing Smiley's earlier career (including his unlikely marriage to and unsurprising separation from Lady Ann Sercombe, a beautiful and promiscuous aristocrat), his recruitment by a lecturer in Oxford and his work in locating promising young Germans with "agent potential" and recommending them for recruitment by the British service prior to WWII. One of these was Dieter Frey, a young German Communist who at the time had a common cause with Smiley in fighting the Nazis and also became his personal friend. Because of the Cold War, Frey had become Smiley's foe, while in a way still remaining his friend. When meeting Smiley again, in the fog near the Thames, Frey greets Smiley with "Servus, George!" before commencing the battle. After killing him, Smiley feels extremely guilty: Dieter was dead, and he had killed him. The broken fingers of his right hand, the stiffness of his body and the sickening headache, the nausea of guilt, all testified to this. And Dieter had let him do it, had not fired the gun, had remembered their friendship when Smiley had not. They had fought in a cloud, in the rising steam of the river, in a clearing in timeless forest: they had met, two friends rejoined, and fought like beasts. Dieter had remembered and Smiley had not. Dieter Frey is the first of several considerably sympathetic Jewish/Communist characters appearing in the le Carre books, followed by Liz Gold and Fiedler in The Spy Who Came in From the Cold.         Lolita: The American Instruction List

1962. Original wraps. Very Good. The uncommon 1962 American Instruction List for Stanley Kubrick's film "Lolita". Essentially a technical screenplay, the Instruction List breaks down each scene --in fact each piece of dialogue-- by "Title No.", "Characters", "Title Starts At", "Title Ends At" and "Total Footage". This is the complete original screenplay, with notations for the editors and cameramen, and broken down into reels. 212 pgs. all told ("Reel 17, pg. 5"), loosely bound --as issued-- in yellow card covers, which are crudely held together by navy-blue masking tape. Folio, solid and VG, with very light soiling and creasing at the covers. A Kubrick curio --and all the more uncommon (given the usual veil of secrecy surrounding the making of his films) as a pre-publication item.

Five days after he won the Nobel Prize for Literature, John Steinbeck thanks an Illinois English class for their congratulations, while reflecting on the widespread criticism of the Nobel Committee's decision: "Of course if I should get heady I have only to read Time Magazine to be set back on my heels."

Sag Harbor, New York, [Oct. 30, 1962]. 5.5" x 3.25". "Autograph Letter Signed, ""John Steinbeck,"" 1 page, on a 5.5"" x 3.25"" postcard, Sag Harbor, New York, [n.d., but postmarked October 30, 1962 to Ms. Pinks' Sophomore English Class thanking them for offering their congratulations on his receiving the 1962 Nobel Prize for Literature. Very fine. ""I can't tell you how happy your wire of congratulations has made me. Of course if I should get heady I have only to read Time Magazine to be set back on my heels. This is painful but healthy. But you have been more than kind to me and I'm grateful. I don't know whether I deserve the award but wires like yours make me glad I got it."" Steinbeck reportedly found out about his winning the Nobel Prize when turning on the television to catch up on the latest developments in the Cuban Missile Crisis. Although at the time he was among only a handful of American authors ever to receive the nod from Stockholm, the news that Steinbeck had one the Nobel Prize for Literature was met with near universal derision from the literary establishment. The article that appeared in Time days after the news broke set the tone, echoing critics, ""who have long since written off John Steinbeck's flawed talent,"" even writing off his 1939 masterpiece, The Grapes of Wrath, dismissed as ""powerful as a tract but limited as fiction, scarcely able to survive its time and place."" The reviewer suspected that the award may have been given in light of one of his last novels, Travels with Charley, ""which manages to recapture the banality, mawkish sentiment and pseudo philosophy that have marked Steinbeck at his worst."" (""Wrapped & Shellacked,"" Time Nov. 2, 1962, Vol. 80, Issue 18). "

First edition, first printing, one of 2000 copies. A terrific look at Bellmer's work as a surrealist photographer. Bellmer is more widely known for his life-sized pubescent female dolls he produced in the mid-1930s. Bellmer's first book, The Doll (Die Puppe) printed anonymously in 1934 featured photographs of his first doll arranged in a series of living pictures. Bellmer's work was declared "degenerate" by the Nazi Party, forcing him to flee to France, where is work became admired and gathered attention from the likes of André Breton's inner circle.

        Dialogo entre Venus y Priapo

Buenos Aires , LA ARBOLEDA PERDIDA, 1962 - Un disegno originale dell'Autore in copertina (ogni volume reca un disegno diverso). Stampato in occasione del sessantesimo compleanno del poeta. 8vo. pp. 14. . Ottimo (Fine). . (Oh luz! El mundo canta. / Cae la luna. El viento.)» [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        The Jerusalem Windows.

      - New York: George Braziller / Andre Sauret, 1962. Large 4to, 210 pp. with 104 plates, including 64 in full color and two original color lithographs done expressly for this edition. Original red cloth in unclipped dustjacket. Occasional minor offsetting of color plates as usual, dustjacket shows slightest of wear to edges with no nicks or tears, a near fine copy. A beautifully illustrated chronicle of the creation of twelve stained glass windows, designed by Chagall for the Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Center Synagogue in Jerusalem. With text and notes by Jean Leymarie, who writes in the introduction: ÒGreat works of art defy limitations of time and place, but sometimes strange combinations are required to produce such art. This is true of the Jerusalem Windows, They seem to belong to the distant past but were actually conceived in our own atomic age. ChagallÕs magic has made this unusual temporal paradox possible, and Zion, where stained glass was unknown, at long last has received the well-deserved mystic raiment for which it was waited since time immemorial.Ó [Attributes: Hard Cover]

This issue of The Physical Review contains the article "Symmetries of Baryons and Mesons" by Murray Gell-Mann, found on pages 1067-1084. This paper demonstrates the "introduction of SU(3) single-octet structure of the known mesons and octet-decuplet structure for the baryons [and] predicts the Omega- Hyperon" Aside from a rare privately printed institutional paper (CTSL-20 printed in 1961), the present paper is the earliest obtainable and best work directly related to Gell-Mann's Nobel Prize, awarded for Physics in 1969 "for his contributions and discoveries concerning the classification of elementary particles and their interactions". The original printed wrappers are more difficult to find than the usual bound instititional copies. See Ezhela, et al, pgs 181 and 186-7.
