        The Tin Drum.

Pantheon, New York 1962 - First American edition of the author's first novel. Octavo, original red cloth. Signed by Gunter Grass on the half title page. Fine in an excellent dust jacket that shows light wear. A very nice example. "When Günter Grass published "The Tin Drum" in 1959 it was as if German literature had been granted a new beginning after decades of linguistic and moral destruction. Within the pages of this, his first novel, Grass recreated the lost world from which his creativity sprang, Danzig, his home town, as he remembered it from the years of his infancy before the catastrophe of war. Here he comes to grips with the enormous task of reviewing contemporary history by recalling the disavowed and the forgotten: the victims, losers and lies that people wanted to forget because they had once believed in them. At the same time the novel breaks the bounds of realism by having as its protagonist and narrator an infernal intelligence in the body of a three-year-old, a monster who overpowers the fellow human beings he approaches with the help of a toy drum. The unforgettable Oskar Matzerath is an intellectual whose critical approach is childishness, a one-man carnival, dadaism in action in everyday German provincial life just when this small world becomes involved in the insanity of the great world surrounding it. It is not too audacious to assume that "The Tin Drum" will become one of the enduring literary works of the 20th century" (The Swedish Academy). [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

3 eigenh. Briefe mit U. ("Boni").

      O. O. u. D. bzw. wohl Zürich, 25. I. 1962.. (o. D.). [...]

London: William Heinemann, 1962. First British Edition. First Impression. Octavo; second issue purple binding, with titles stamped in gilt on spine; 196pp. Signed by Burgess on the title page above his printed name, which he has crossed out. Vintage booksellers label (Foyles) to front pastedown, else Fine in a price-clipped (and therefore presumed) second issue dustjacket; some pin-point wear to crown and corner tips, a single short tear at upper edge of rear panel, with the shadow of an old cello-tape mend removed from verso, indiscernable from the outset; a bright, very Near Fine example of a jacket normally encountered heavily-worn. The author's best-known work, a violent dystopia and basis for Stanley Kubrick's highly-regarded 1971 film. The idea for Burgess's novel, sadly, was inspired by real-life events: his wife Llewela was violently assaulted by several G.I.'s during the wartime blackout in London. The assault induced a miscarriage, psychological trauma, and resulted in her being unable to bear children. "Nauseated by the content of his tale, he wrote it with the help of gin and dexedrine." Burgess's agent ended up selling the rights to Clockwork to a lawyer named Si Litvinoff for the ridiculous sum of $500.00; Litvinoff then sold them to Kubrick and Warner Brothers for $500,000.00, and the film ended up turning Kubrick into a multi-millionaire overnight. One of the most innovative and enduring works of the latter half of the 20th century. Boytinck 75; Brewer A04.

Boston: Little, Brown and Company,, 1962. Octavo. Original buff cloth, titles to spine in dark green, publisher's device to front board in blind, top edge dark green. With the dust jacket. A few slight marks to boards; an excellent copy in the lightly rubbed jacket with slightly toned spine, a few nicks and chips to extremities and short closed tear with minor loss to foot of spine. First edition, first impression. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "This is for Larry Kramer - not because he is a friend of Mr. Big (Little, Brown) - but because he liked a story whispered to me on an ancient wind - and because, too, of understanding. Salam al likim [approximate phonetization of traditional Arabic salutation], Oct. 29 '62. Jamie." Kramer later rose to prominence in the 1970s as an author, gay rights activist, and founder of ACT UP. Kramer and Clavell would have met when Kramer, then an unknown, was working in Hollywood rewriting scripts for Columbia Pictures. King Rat was written by Clavell in an intense period of three months in 1960. "The book was also a catharsis for Clavell, as it told of a power struggle among a group of Japanese prisoners of war. It was an immediate best-seller and the first of what Clavell called his Asian saga" (ODNB).

        Cover Her Face.

Faber and Faber, London 1962 - First edition of the author's first book. Octavo, original green cloth. Light shelfwear to the bottom cloth, near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Signed by the author on the title page with the added words, "And when that happened the right words would be found." The inscription is the final line of this novel. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. A superior example with a nice inscription from the author. "Cover Her Face was, James has said, written simply to try out her powers in fiction as a preliminary to attempting the novel proper. Its immediate success, however-snapped up at once by the prestigious British publishers Faber and Faber, and well reviewed on publication-caused her to try her hand again at the detective story, putting even more of the novel's concern with the workings of the human mind, and indeed of the soul, into its pages. Already present in that first attempt were many of the hallmarks of her subsequent writing. There was the fastidious prose, beautifully accurate and not without complex plots Add to these qualities a gift for forward-looking storytelling and, above all, the creation of a detective you like and want to go on liking in Adam Dalgliesh, policeman and plausible poet" (Keating, 40).         The Spy Who Loved Me

London: Jonathan Cape,, 1962. Octavo. Original brown boards, spine lettered in silver, dagger design to front board in silver and blind, red endpapers. With the dust jacket. Spine gently rolled, tips a little bumped, minor abrasion to front free endpaper, internally fine; an excellent copy in the jacket with toned spine, 4 cm short closed tear to head of slightly spotted rear panel, and a few nicks to extremities. First edition, first impression. In many ways this is one of the most ambitious of Fleming's Bond books. It purports to be the first hand testimony of a 23 year old Canadian woman with whom Bond has an ill-fated affair. In time-honoured literary tradition Fleming claims to have been sent Michel's manuscript account of which he is merely the editor. Michel therefore gets a spurious credit as co-author on the title page. This novel is the only Bond book to be written in the first person.

The Dark Monarch A Portrait From Within.

London: The Galley Press, Uncorrected Proof Copy, 1962. - "This is a rough and uncorrected proof and should not be regarded as a finished copy in either printing or binding." 204 pp. paper covers, in good condition. With drawings by the author. The author's note says that "The Dark Monarch is psychobiographic, in the widest sense." Berlin, 1911-1999, was a dancer, painter, sculptor, writer and poet, one of the last surviving members of the St Ives School in Cornwall. This was his second novel and its motive was, in some degree, to vent personal anger over the hypocrisy of an over-close competitive art colony. The book was published and 575 copies were sold before its withdrawal from sale after no fewer than four libel actions by members of that colony. Copies were pulped, with probably only around 100 surviving. This is an uncorrected proof copy. It is therefore an interesting survival and has to be considered very scarce.

        Paradise Reclaimed [Signed] [Paradisarheimt; Undirritaðu]

Thomas Y. Crowell Company, 1962, Hardcover, Book Condition: Fine, Dust Jacket Condition: fine, First editionA Fine copy of the first American edition, first printing (slight pushing to the spine ends, slight loss to publisher's name on the spine, small sticker shadow to the rear free endpaper), in a Fine dust jacket (spine lightly toned), SIGNED BY HALLDOR LAXNESS on the title page; a novel centered on the Mormon missionary involvement in Iceland. During the 19th Century, Mormon missionaries came to Iceland and converted a small number of Icelanders to Mormonism. These converts then founded the first Icelandic community outside of Iceland when, in 1855, they emigrated to America and founded the community of Spanish Fork, Utah. [The Mormon missionary endeavor to Iceland did not succeed and, as of 2013's end, only 185 Mormons lived in Iceland.]Halldor Laxness won the 1955 Nobel Prize in Literature "for his vivid epic power which has renewed the great narrative art of Iceland", making him the first (and, as of the day of this listing, the only) Icelander ever to win the Prize. In our experience, signed copies of trade editions of Laxness' work (as opposed to Limited Editions which are called to be signed) are not terribly common to the market, and signed copies of this work by Halldor Laxness are quite uncommon. A Fine copy, SIGNED BY HALLDOR LAXNESS. QUITE SCARCE.
