        FRONTESPIECE - VITRAUX POUR JERUSALEM

MONTECARLO , 1962 - Litografia originale a colori impressa su carta vellina. 0

The Olympia Press, London 1962 - First edition, first printing. Octavo, original green wrappers. Signed by William Burroughs on the title page. In fine condition. A superior example. "It is in books like The Ticket that Exploded that Burroughs seems to revel in a new medium for its own sake--a medium totally fantastic, spaceless, timeless, in which the normal sentence is fractured, the cosmic tries to push its way through bawdry, and the author shakes the reader as a dog shakes a rat" (Anthony Burgess).         Fuck You : A Magazine Of The Arts, Number 4

Fuck You Press, New York 1962 - 4to, 26 pale green mimeographed leaves, unpaginated, secured by staples running the length of left edge. A fine copy. First edition. Issue Number 4 of this key publication of the Mimeograph Revolution. Printed in August 1962. In the 'fifties and 'sixties, one-man underground publishing enterprises such as the Fuck You Press rarely got past Issue One -- indeed, many failed even to get that far. Fuck You, A Magazine For The Arts ran for thirteen issues between 1962 and 1965, featured contributors comprising most of the principal cast of that period's counterculture scene, and is now acknowledged as one of the main freeways connecting the end of the Beats to the beginning of the Yippies. In Sanders' own words, 'Fuck You was part of what they called the Mimeograph Revolution, and my vision was to reach out to the 'best minds' of my generation with a message of Gandhian pacifism, great sharing, social change, the expansion of personal freedom (including the legalisation of marijuana), and the then-stirring messages of sexual liberation.' Contributors to this, the Mad Men issue, include Michael McClure making his debut appearance, Nelson Barr, John Weiners ('faggot & cocaine snifter'), John Harriman ('Dean of the Lower East Side Guild of Motherfuckers & Poets'), and Sanders himself. Sanders' attitude to his female contributors had yet to aspire to the revolutionary: among them were Carol Berge ('Sweet poetess whom the entire Editorial Board, you may know, would just love to fuck') and Mary Mayo ('another poetess on the We'd-love-to-fuck list'). Tuli Kupferberg makes his second appearance. He and Sanders were co-founders of the The Fugs, the underground freak electro-folk protest combo whose output, which included songs such as Homemade Shit, Coco Cola Douche and I Shit My Pants, resulted in an impressive number of arrests for obscenity. Around 500 copies of each issue were produced, firstly on the nearby Catholic Worker's Speed-O-Print and later on an A.B. Dick stencil duplicator. They were then distributed free of charge wherever Sanders found himself. The survival rate of any issue of the magazine is low; copies of early issues rarely surface, and they are rarer still in fine condition.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo?s Nest

New York: Viking Press, 1962. First edition. Octavo, original cloth. Fine in a very good to near fine dust jacket with some light fading to the spine panel. Signed by Ken Kesey on the front free endpaper. Published in February 1962, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest was a great critical and commercial success. Over the subsequent decades the book's reputation and readership swelled as millions recognized Kesey's psychiatric ward as a not-so-fantastic metaphor for a modern world in which bureaucracy and technology combine to diminish humanity, individuality and diversity. Adapted to the stage in 1963, with Kirk Douglas in the lead, and was the basis for the highly successful 1975 film starring Jack Nicholson.

      o. O., 24. VI. 1962. - 140 : 90 mm. Cliburn im Profil am Piano sitzend. RCA-Karte. The New York Times notierte damals: "A Celebrity Returns, Undimmed." („Eine Berühmtheit kehrt zurück, ungetrübt."). Weiter hieß es: "It is reassuring to know after all these silent years that he is not deficient in the mysterious impulses that keep gifted artists active after the fires of youth burn low."

Penrhyndeudraeth, 4. XII. 1962. - 4to. ½ p. To his friend and colleague, the physical chemist Professor Mansel Morris Davies (1913-95) in Aberystwyth: "[.] I am sorry that it is not likely I shall be able to accept your invitation, because I am, at the moment, so overwhelmed with commitments in the work against nuclear war that I have taken on, and in projects such that I will [corrected to: shall] be obliged to reject many invitations I should wish to accept. I shall keep your invitation in mind, and should it be possible for me to accept it I shall inform you [.]" - An eminent historian and philosopher of science, Davies taught at Aberystwyth from 1947 to 1977. His obituary described him as "a passionate crusader for social and political justice, a lifelong militant pacifist, a Pugwash participant, a committed humanist with strong leanings towards Buddhism, a prolific author and letter writer, a discriminating collector, a riveting anecdotalist, a man of omnivorous literary, musical and scientific tastes". - Traces of folds and of scotch tape along edges of upper left corner.         Socialism: An Economic and Sociological Analysis.

New Haven: Yale University Press, 1962. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by Ludwig Von Mises on the front free endpaper. In near fine condition. Second edition. Books signed by Von Mises are uncommon. Socialism is a masterwork is much more than a refutation of the economics of socialism. It is also a critique of the implicit religious doctrines behind Western socialist thinking, a cultural critique of socialist teaching on sex and marriage, an examination of the implications of radical human inequality, an attack on war, socialism, and refutation of collectivist methodology. Von Mises sets out to refute socialism, and instead yanked out the collectivist mentality from its very roots. This work led dozens of well-known intellectuals, including a young F.A.         Great Political Content Letter from President Kennedy to Franklin D. Roosevelt's son - "I am not in the least concerned about the publication of the liberal papers, except that it may embarrass politically some good Congressmen ? the more that is written and discussed about foreign policy the more meaningful becomes our use of free speech ? the bankruptcy of the Republican party has been exposed by their concentration on this wholly synthetic issue?"

[Palm Beach, Florida], April 23, 1962. 7" x 10.25". "Draft Typed Letter unsigned with two words, cross outs, and a punctuation edit in ink in his hand, 1p, 7"" x 10.25"". On pale green White House Washington stationery, but written during the Kennedys' Easter vacation in Palm Beach, Florida, April 23, 1962. To James Roosevelt, House of Representatives, Washington. Marked ""PERSONAL"" in type at upper left. Two tiny staple holes in upper left. Never folded. Fine condition.Democrat James Roosevelt (1907-1991) was Franklin D. Roosevelt's eldest son. He represented California in the House of Representatives from 1955-1965.In full (handwritten edits in bold): ""Dear Jimmy: Many thanks for your letter. Contrary to what you may have heard I am not in the least concerned about the publication of the liberal papers, except that it may embarrass politically some good Congressmen. While I have not agreed for a long period of time with many of the writers, I do think that the more that is written and discussed about foreign policy the more meaningful becomes our use of free speech and the more careful becomes our analysis of present and future policies. The fact is that the bankruptcy of the Republican party has been greatly exposed increased by their concentration on this wholly synthetic issue. With kind personal regards."" Roosevelt had written the Preface to The Liberal Papers.BackgroundLos Angeles Times Washington Bureau Chief Robert T. Hartmann reported on April 22, 1962 (the day before JFK wrote this letter) that ""Former Vice President Nixon, joining a rising chorus of Republican critics in Congress, thinks 'The Liberal Papers' advocate a policy of 'unilateral goodwill toward the international Communist conspiracy' and should be repudiated by responsible Democrats and the Kennedy administration ... Nixon, 1960 GOP standard-bearer and currently a candidate for the California gubernatorial nomination, expressed his 'considerable amazement' over the controversial volume in a letter to Rep. Glen Lipscomb (R-Los Angeles), chairman of the state Republican delegation in the House.""'The Liberal Papers,' a volume of essays written by 12 private individuals and prefaced in their recently published form by Rep. James Roosevelt (D-Los Angeles), came under sharp attack by GOP leaders a month ago as going 'beyond the Communist line' and reflecting the views of some influential Democrats ... To the extent that these positions (including admission of Red China into the U.N. and neutralization of Germany) have become associated with some Democratic Congressmen and some members of the Kennedy administration through the publication of 'the Liberal Papers'. I believe that they should be promptly repudiated,' Nixon stated...""On April 25, 1962, three days later, UPI reported that ""The White House has told a critical Republican congressman that the views expressed in as controversial book called 'The Liberal Papers' are 'wholly at variance with the foreign policy of the United States.' The White House repudiation of the book came in a letter made public Tuesday [April 24] from President Kennedy's special assistant for congressional affairs, Larry O'Brien, to Rep. Clark MacGregor (R-Minn.). MacGregor and nine other Republican freshmen denounced the book on the floor of the House last week ... MacGregor said in a statement he was 'very pleased that Mr. Kennedy, through O'Brien, does repudiate the ideas in the book.' President Kennedy never repudiated the ideas in The Liberal Papers; he just didn't agree with many of the writers."
