        Silent Spring

Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1962. First edition. Octavo, original green cloth. Signed by Rachel Carson on the half title page. Small name on the front free endpaper, near fine in a near fine dust jacket with some rubbing to the spine. A very nice example. In the late 1950s, Carson turned her attention to conservation, especially environmental problems that she believed were caused by synthetic pesticides. The result was Silent Spring, which brought environmental concerns to the American public. "Her book is a cry to the reading public to help curb private and public programs which by use of poisons will end by destroying life on earth. ... Miss Carson, with the fervor of an Ezekiel, is trying to save nature and mankind" (The New York Times). Silent Spring "became a runaway bestseller, with international reverberations It is well crafted, fearless and succinct Even if she had not inspired a generation of activists, Carson would prevail as one of the greatest nature writers in American letters" (Mattheissen, Time).

The Ticket that Exploded is the second installment in Burroughs's The Nova Trilogy, which also includes The Soft Machine (1961) and Nova Express (1964). Lee's investigation of the Nova Mob, a group of intergalactic criminals who are intent on destroying Earth by using mind control. Like the other novels in The Nova Trilogy, Burroughs wrote The Ticket that Exploded using Brion Gysin's cut-up method, in which the authors slice up paragraphs of text and then combine unrelated words and phrases to create a new text..         Toros Muertos

Stuttgart: Ernst Battenberg Verlag, [1962] - 4to (263 × 267 mm), pp.[48]. Black-and-white photographs. Texts by Jean Cocteau and Jean-Marie Landau. Photo-illustrated endpapers. Black-and-white photo-illustrated paper-covered boards, text in red, white cloth spine lettered in red; a couple of signatures pulling at gutter but holding firm. Spine toned, light wear to boards and extremities. Publisher’s photo-illustrated paper-covered board slipcase, white cloth edges; light wear, light soiling to edges. Signed by Clergue in black ink on title-page and again on the front of the slipcase. Very good in a near-fine slipcase. First edition, signed twice. Much of Lucien Clergue’s work revolves around themes of loss, death, and decay, most of it made in and around his native Arles and the surrounding Camargue region. He took these photographs between 1955-1962 at several arenas in the South of France: Nîmes, Arles, Lumel, Beaucaire, Méjanes, Châteauurenard, Marseille, and Le Gran du Roi. ‘The book’s design, bold and cinematic, is also extremely effective in both heightening the drama and maintaining a dynamic flow to the action. By repeating a series of close-ups, and showing us very little of the stadium, the crowd, or other players in the drama, Clergue keeps our attention on the bull’s plight, imparting a strong psychological sense to the drama. He emphasizes how primitive and elemental the whole business is - it is entirely about death, nothing less than ritual sacrifice, and by concentrating on the abbatoir elements, he does not let us forget that’ (Badger). In 1969, together with author Michel Tournier and historian Jean-Maurice Rouquette, Lucien Clergue founded the Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie d’Arles photography festival. He was named a knight of the Légion d’honneur in 2003, and elected as a member of the Academy of Fine Arts of the Institute of France on the 31 May 2006, on the creation of a new section dedicated to photography, making him the first photographer to enter the Academy to a seat devoted to photography.         [Virtuosos][Violinists] Small, personal photo group relating to the great violinist Fritz Kreisler

Ephemera. Very Good. Small, personal photo group relating to the great Fritz Kreisler. Shown in a photograph with the Ambassador to Japan; in a photograph with Mr. Werlich on a concert tour; a photograph of Kreisler and Mischa Elmans Carnegie Hall marquis; a photograph of the Kreisler villa in Berlin; a photograph of the Lies/Kreisler monument at Woodlawn, a Postcard of study here with Mr. and Mrs. Kreisler at Geneve, a Real Photo postcard of the Imperial Hotel, Tokyo; a postcard of Monte Carlo to Mrs. Herman Zepf, husband of Emma Clarke; envelope Lee, Higgenson and Co. stationery from Emma Clarke to Miss Margaret Buck care of Mrs. Fritz Kreisler care of Mr. Fred McCrea to Swanston House, Melbourne Australia, with a forward to Sydney. Kreisler, the most famous and beloved violinist of the early 20th century, was the youngest person to ever enter the Vienna Conservatory of Music. Known for his arresting and lush tone, that was said to be recognizable instantly, he also became quite notorious for a classical fraud of the most complimentary sway: for years he performed pieces that he stated were forgotten compositions by Couperin, Vivaldi and other greats. Years later he confessed rather lightly that they were, in fact, his own works. This was met with criticism by musicologists, but public opinion changed little, in fact he rode out the scandal well, adding himself that it was only a compliment that they were under illusion so completely. During his illustrious musical life, he played instruments by noted luthiers Antonio Stradivari, Pietro Guarneri, Giuseppe Guarneri, and Carlo Bergonzi, most of which eventually came to bear his name. The Stradivarius instruments that he owned at one time are: The Lady Inchiquin, The Earl of Plymouth, The Greville, The Huberman and The Lord Amherst of Hackney.         Roman Bezjak. Sozialistische Moderne.

Buch: 31,5 x 25,5 cm, 160 Seiten, 76 Farbtafeln, geb. C-Print im Mappe, 40 x 50 cm, Blattformat 38 x 44 cm, Auflage 20 + 5 e. a., signiert, num. [Attributes: Signed Copy]
