        Typed Letter Signed

Remsenburg, New York: np. First Edition. Fine. AN INTERESTING SIGNED LETTER PROVIDING INSIGHT INTO WODEHOUSE'S WRITING METHODS FOR ONE OF HIS MOST POPULAR WORKS. The letter, on Wodehouse's Remsenburg New York stationery and dated Jan 14, 1962, reads in full: Dear Mr. Chapple. Thank you so much for your letter. I'm so glad you have enjoyed my books. I have just finished a short version of a new Jeeves novel -- short because the magazines over here won't use long serials any more -- and I am now faced with the task of expanding it to book publication length. I think I shall manage it all right, as I condensed the short version very much, and there is a lot of Bertie-Jeeves chit chat I want to put in. Yours sincerely [signed] P.G. Wodehouse Wodehouse in this letter is almost certainly referring to his classic, Stiff Upper Lip, Jeeves, which first appeared in serial form in Playboy before being published in book form in the U.S. on March 22, 1963 and in the U.K. on August 16, 1963. Remsenburg, NY: January 14, 1962. One page (6x7 inches). Horizontal fold, otherwise fine. With original envelope to the recipient.

Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (Signed First Edition)

New York: Atheneum, 1962. First Edition. First Edition. INSCRIBED by the author to David Diamond (with his blindstamp on the title page) on the first blank: "For David / With love / Edward Albee / December 1962." Diamond (1915-2005) was an American composer of classical music, and a longtime supporter of Albee's work. Thanks to Diamond's connections, Albee's career got the start it needed when he sent Diamond a copy of his first play, "The Zoo Story." The composer was so taken by the play's ruthless demeanor he suggested Albee should begin sending the play to other directors, actors, and playwrights. From that time forward Albee would become one of the most formidable voices in the theatre. Basis for the 1966 film, the debut of director Mike Nichols, starring Richard Burton and an oddly alluring Elizabeth Taylor. Near Fine in a Very Good plus dust jacket. Slight spine lean. Jacket extremities with a touch of shelfwear, and a few diagonal creases at the flaps.

        The Spy Who Loved Me

London: Jonathan Cape,, 1962. Octavo. Original dark grey boards, spine lettered in silver, dagger design to front board in silver and blind, red endpapers. With the pictorial dust jacket. Bookplate to front pastedown. An excellent, bright copy in the unclipped jacket, with a little rubbing to extremities and nick to head of rear panel. First edition, first impression. In many ways this is one of the most ambitious of Fleming's Bond books. It purports to be the first hand testimony of a 23 year old Canadian woman with whom Bond has an ill-fated affair. In time-honoured literary tradition Fleming claims to have been sent Michel's manuscript account of which he is merely the editor. Michel therefore gets a spurious credit as co-author on the title page. This novel is the only Bond book to be written in the first person.

        Reinhart in Love

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons. (1962). First. First edition. Stains along the edges of the boards, thus a sound but good only copy in a good but presentable dustwrapper with a corresponding stain visible only on the rear panel. The Dedication Copy Inscribed by the author to his parents: "Love, Tom II. This book has already been dedicated to you by Thomas Berger." The printed dedication reads: "To my father and mother." Berger was a fine, if now ridiculously underappreciated author. He wrote successfully in several genres, but is best known for his picaresque western Little Big Man, the basis for the film of the same name. Indeed it was his success at so many genres (literary fiction, mysteries, epics, westerns, comedies, etc.) that might have contributed to the failure of critics to properly value him. This is the author's second book, and the second in his series featuring Carlo Reinhart, with a wonderful association. .

        Typed Letter Signed

Remsenburg, New York: np. First Edition. letter. IMPORTANT SIGNED LETTER ON THE ORIGIN OF THE NAMES WOOSTER AND JEEVES. Wodehouse's letter, dated May 20, 1962, is in response to a letter from G.L.C. "Bertie" Wooster, asking Wodehouse if he had known his father at Clifton College and perhaps gotten the name "Wooster" from him. Wodehouse writes in full: Dear Mr Wooster. I was very interested to get a letter signed by your honoured name! But I wasn't at Clifton. I was at Dulwich. I can't remember how I got the name Wooster.  I think it may have been from a serial in the old Captain, where one of the characters was called Worcester.  The odd thing is that the Bertie W. character started out as Reggie Pepper, and I don't know why I changed the name. Jeeves I got from watching a Warwickshire v Gloucestershire match. One of the Warwickshire bowlers was called Jeeves, and it seemed just the name I wanted. I have just shipped off a new Jeeves novel to the Jenkins people. It is a sequel to The Code of the Woosters, and has come out very well. It won't be published till next year, as I have a Blandings Castle story coming out in June and they never like to publish more than one a year. Yours sincerely, [signed] P.G. Wodehouse The sequel Wodehouse refers to is almost certainly Stiff Upper Lip, Jeeves, published in 1963. With original typed envelope and a note from G. L. C. Wooster (signed "Bertie") explaining the context of the letter to Wodehouse. Also with a photograph (5x7 in) of Wodehouse. Remsenburg, New York: May 20, 1962. One page (6x7 inches), on Wodehouse's Remsenburg, New York letterhead. Horizontal fold, some light browning and foxing. A fascinating insight into the origins of the names of two of the most iconic characters in English literature.
