The Jerusalem Windows

George Braziller 1962 - George Braziller, New York, 1962. Marc Zakharovich Chagall, born Moishe Zakharovich Shagal, (1887 – 28 March 1985) was a Russian-French artist of Belarusian Jewish origin. An early modernist, he was associated with several major artistic styles and created works in virtually every artistic format, including painting, book illustrations, stained glass, stage sets, ceramic, tapestries and fine art prints. He has been respected as the world's preeminent Jewish artist. Using the medium of stained glass, he produced windows for the cathedrals of Reims and Metz. In 1960, he began creating twelve stained glass windows for the synagogue of Hebrew University's Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem. It was decided that the windows, representing the twelve tribes of Israel, were to be filled with stained glass. Chagall envisaged the synagogue as "a crown offered to the Jewish Queen", and the windows as "jewels of translucent fire. This book is beautifully illustrated with 104 plates (64 in full color), and has two original color lithographs done expressly for this work. This book, 211 pages, is lacking the dust jacket and slipcase and the spine is faded. But internally the book is fine and all illustrations are brilliant. The two lithographs are worth the price of this book. This large and heavy book will require additional postage. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        A Clockwork Orange

London: Heinemann, 1962. First edition. Original cloth, original dust jacket. Fine/Very Good. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE of one of the classics of the 20th century. "Like 1984, this is a book in which an entire social order is implied through language. And what language! To hint at the vile universe of the 15-year-old delinquent Alex and his murderous buddies, Burgess created 'nadsat,' a rich futuristic patois. 'Sinny' for 'cinema.' 'Viddy' for 'see,' 'horrorshow' for 'good' - from the Russian, khorosho, which gives you some idea of which political system has prevailed. The words locate him in a world of corrupted values, violence and boundless infantile indulgence. (His drug is 'milk plus.') When Alex is apprehended by the authorities and subjected to psychological conditioning to make him nauseated at any impulse towards violence, Burgess's book becomes a meditation on whether a world in which evil can be freely chosen might still be preferable to one in which goodness is compelled. Stanley Kubrick's coldly magnificent 'sinny' adaptation has sometimes threatened to overshadow this great novel. Don't let it happen" (Richard Lacayo, All-Time 100 Novels). The basis for the classic 1971 Stanley Kubrick film and with a final chapter that was omitted from US editions until 1986. First Issue: with black cloth binding and dust jacket with "16S NET" sticker and wider flaps.London: Heinemann, 1962. Octavo, original black cloth, original pictorial dust jacket by Barry Trengrove. Small ownership signature on front free endpaper. Book fine; dust jacket with mild fading to spine (as often), nearly invisible repaired closed tear near base of spine. An excellent copy of one of the most influential novels of the century.

        A Wrinkle In Time

New York: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1962. Third printing of the author's Newbery award-winning novel. Octavo, original half cloth. Signed by Madeleine L'Engle on the front free endpaper. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Jacket design by Ellen Raskin. At once a science fiction story, a philosophical meditation on the nature of Evil and Love and a coming-of-age novel, Wrinkle broke new ground in what was considered appropriate for young readers. Rejected by several publishers for being too complex, this title has amply proven L'Engle's belief that 'children are excited by new ideas' and has been credited with bringing science fiction into the mainstream of children's literature. This is L'Engle's best work" (Silvey, 401). A Wrinkle in Time is one of the most significant novels of our time. "A book that every person should read, a book that provides a road map for seeking knowledge and compassion even at the worst of times, a book to make the world a better place" (Cory Doctorow). It went on to win a Newbery Medal, Sequoyah Book Award, and Lewis Carroll Shelf Award, and was runner-up for the Hans Christian Andersen Award. It is the basis for the film directed by Ava DuVernay, starring Storm Reid, Reese Witherspoon, Zach Galifianakis, and Oprah Winfrey.

A collection 10 intimate TYPED LETTERS SIGNED by the JAMAICAN-AMERICAN AUTHOR ALSTON ANDERSON to the author & screenwriter RUDY WURLITZER, together with 2 Typed Letters to Alston Signed by Wurlitzer.

New York & Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts, November 1962 to November 17th, 1965. [1962]. [1962]. - - Ten letters by the Jamaican-American author of "Lover Man" densely typed on 11 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide creamy buff paper. Addressed to the author of "Nog", Rudy Wurlitzer, each letter is signed "Alston". In a November 1962 letter, typed on both sides of the sheet, Alston dives right in, letting loose his "wild" side which one can at once consider a gift or a plague. "I saw Miles [Miles Davis] last night, but I was so drunk that I got thrown out of the place. (Village Vanguard.) What I heard sounded great. I'll probably go again tonight and take Ruth." Perhaps not surprising considering the cause of his fallout with Robert Graves, without qualms Alston reveals his feelings for Rudy's sister: "I had lunch with your sister yesterday, and tried to make her. No luck. I really didn't like her much in Deya [ie: Deia, Mallorca], but now I love her. She admitted that it's a pity that you're her brother. If you weren't, she'd marry you. And I wouldn't blame her. If I was a woman, I'D marry you." As is the case throughout his letters, Alston philosophizes about writing: "Read the Tibetans, baby, read the Tibetans. The only problem you'll have is that you'll come to realize that there's really nothing worth writing about." Briefly falling back into explicit descriptions of his lusty feelings, Alston closes with "Bye bye, blackbird". In a 1-1/4 page letter dated December 21st, 1962 typed on both sides of a sheet of paper, Alston first elatedly mentions that he's "been writing. I'm working on a story called 'Diary of a Madman'. Yesterday I threw out something called 'A Good Edjucation', but I may try it again soon." He quotes a couple of paragraphs from his story whose black protagonist resides in an Asylum: "I have a suggestion to make to the President of the United States." he quotes his character, "The next time, sir, that you hear of a Negro trying to enter a Southern (white) University, will you kindly order him to the White House immediately." The madman (Alston's satirical voice) goes on to suggest that the president offer to build him, in the North, the greatest University one could possibly visualize staffed by "the brightest, whitest professors from the United States, France, England and Germany." Not only would the government save a fortune on troop expenditure but "It would also spare a town like Columbia, S.C., or Athens, Ga., the pleasure of having such casual visitors as four hundred and fifty U.S. Marshals, the entire 82nd Airborne Division, CBS-TV, ABC-TV, NBC-TV,." and so on, sarcastically concluding through his character that, of course, the people of those towns might be a little disappointed at the lack of attention. Signed "Alston". In a one-page letter dated February 27th, 1963 addressed "Dear Rudolfo" Alston opens by asking "how did you come by that Italian first name? Don't tell me. It's probably too complicated." He goes on to reveal that "I threw 'Diary of a Madman' away. Man, I was out of my mind!" "I've stopped drinking completely - until July 15th" writes Alston, "By then I hope to have another book of stories finished as well as an article for the Atlantic Monthly on the Dred Scott decision. I plan to make a play on Dred Scott, by the way". He then requests that, if he can, Rudy send him a copy of "Skin Deep". Signed "Alston". On April 23th of that year, Alston writes a one-and-a half page letter to "Dear Rude" to let him know that he's not called Marianne [Rudy's sister] about a story since he's broke and "only recently I've taken to stocking my larder before I go on my little toots. Getting sensible in my middle age. My phone bill isn't paid yet. In fact, I no longer even have a phone." While he's expecting money from Paris as the publisher Calmann-Levy bought his book "Lover Man", he "foolishly" signed over his money to J.B. who, it turns out is in jail for marijuana possession: "pot of all things. In Paris! where I've smoked at the COUPOLE, man! Interpol, though. Those kats have very long arms." He' [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

The second report covers Scott Carpenter's mission, the second orbital flight by an American which nearly ended in disaster when Aurora 7 malfunctioned and the astronaut had to guide the capsule back to Earth manually. This volume is isncribed by Carpenter himself. The other two reports cover the final two Mercury missions and an overview of the whole project, including Shepard and Grissom's suborbital flights. Also included are a copy of For Spacious Skies by Scott Carpenter & Kris Stoever (2002, first edition), a couple of Scott Carpenter's business cards, and a postcard, leaflet and souvenir medal from the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Aurora 7 flight. This group comes from the collection of Robert S. Greene (1922-2013), a jazz musician, documentary maker and early space flight enthusiast. As a musician he was best known for his championing of Jelly Roll Morton's style of New Orleans jazz.

The Lord of the Rings, 1962/63 Allen & Unwin UK 1st Editions in Custom Leather Slipcase

London: Allen & Unwin, 1962. First Edition. Original Cloth. Near Fine/Near Fine. J.R.R. Tolkien. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien. Comprised of The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King. Published by George Allen & Unwin, 1962 & 1963, 1st Editions, 12th imp/10th imp/10th imp. An exceptionally nice set of first editions of this classic of fantasy literature. The set is housed in a custom full leather slipcase to show and protect. The set is in Near Fine condition, with small previous owners initials to the top corner of the front free endpaper, no other writing in the books. There are tape ghosts from the old style dustjacket protectors that have kept the dustjackets in beautiful condition, and also a mark to the flap of The Fellowship and The Two Towers, that may have been caused by the same tape, at least the position makes it appear that way. There is no foxing or offsetting in any of the books or to the endpapers as is common. The exterior cloth is clean and unmarked, with the gilt untarnished and bright. The books are clean and tight, and the maps are attached in each volume, and show no extra folds, but the first two have a minor tear at the mounting flap, now neatly repaired. The red topstain is not faded, and relatively uniform across all three volumes. The dustjackets are complete and the correct impression for the books. The dj's are in Near Fine condition with only minor rubbing and edgewear, mainly to the tips of the flap folds. The dustjackets show almost no tanning to the spines, much less than the norm. A lovely Near Fine set of this classic of fantasy literature. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Near Fine / Near Fine.

Engraved frontispiece (incorporating 5 town plans and a portrait of the author), engraved folding map of North Friesland (at a scale of about 1: 450,000) dated 1668, and a folding letterpress genealogical table. 18th-century mottled calf, gold-tooled spine and board edges.       - Berichten v.d. Rijksdienst v.h. Ouheidkundig bodemonderzoek (1962), p. 263; NCC (3 copies); VD17 23:303854H (4 copies, 1 incompl. and another possibly destroyed). Second (and last early) edition, enlarged by the author, of a rare extensive history of North Friesland (the west coast of the Duchy of Schleswig in present-day Germany) from its mythological origins to 1667, by Antonius Heimreich. The five town plans on the frontispiece depict Tönder (now in Denmark), Bredstedt, Husum, Garding and Tönning. The map was engraved by the brothers Matthias and Nicolas Petersen, goldsmiths in Husum, and the frontispiece by Matthias alone. The present edition includes the author's dedication to Christian Albrecht (1641-1695), Prince-Bishop of Lübeck and Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf. Heimreich (1626-1685) was a minister of the Evangelical Lutheran Church and came from a family of Schleswig ministers. With an 1851 purchase inscription (price in dollars) by A.J. Skilton. Slightly browned and with a small tear in the folding map, but still in good condition. The frontispiece has been folded in at the foot and fore-edge to avoid shaving. The surface of the leather has been damaged, but the binding has been rebacked and restored and is now structurally sound. A rare and important chronicle of North Friesland.
