'The Guns of James Bond' contained within 'Sports Illustrated' Magazine Vol 16, No.11, 19th March 1962.

Chicago, Illinois: Time Inc. 1962. Pp.84. Original price 25cents. Magazine format, illustrated. Postal label to upper, some dampstaining to lower margins, very good. Contains the first US appearance of this original Ian Fleming feature entitled 'The Guns of James Bond', which not published in book-form until 2008. Scarce thus. 'Q Branch' (aka Major Boothroyd) in the Bond novels is based on Major Geoffrey Boothroyd, a gun expert who lived in Glasgow, Scotland. Boothroyd wrote to Fleming concerning his choice of firearms after reading the novels; he criticized Bond's use of guns and Fleming, far be it from being upset, took the expert's advice and adapted his writing accondingly- Boothroyd's comments included switching the Beretta (a ladies gun) for the Walther PPK, and he noted that a shoulder holster (as seen in the film 'Dr. No' (1962) does not provide as quick a draw as a belt holster (viz many Westerns). Geoffrey Boothroyd can be seen in person with Sean Connery in the black and white 1964 short documentary "The Guns of James Bond".This article is framed by the actual correspondence between Fleming and Boothroyd.

        The Forms of Fiction

New York: Random House, (1962). First Edition. Hardcover Hardcover. Very Good. 657 pages. John Garner's first book, a textbook for English student consisting of an introductory essay on forms of fictional narratives, followed by an anthology of short stories by Ernest Hemingway, John Steinbeck, Katherine Anne Porter, Mark Twain, et al. First edition (first printing). A very good copy in a very good dust jacket. There is debate about whether this book, intended as a text book, was ever issued in a dust jacket for the first edition. In any case, this copy is very good, with some spotting to the spine, in a very good dust jacket, with light tanning to the spine and some light staining to the price-clipped dust jacket. Whether this dust jacket is original to the book, or married from a later printing, is beyond the skill of this cataloguer. Dust jackets for this book, on any printing, are vanishingly scarce in any case.

The Notorious Landlady (Original oversize double weight photograph from the 1962 film)

Culver City, CA: Columbia Pictures, 1962. Vintage oversize, double weight, borderless still photograph from the 1962 film, showing directed Quine scrutinizing the setup of a dinner scene with Jack Lemmon and Kim Novak. Based on the short story "The Notorious Tenant" by Margery Sharp, first published by "Colliers" in 1956. Shot, struck, and mounted by the film's still photographer, Bob Willoughby, with a holograph notation in his hand on the verso. Full provenance available. After studying with Saul Bass at the Kann Institute of Art in Los Angeles, Willoughby began working as a photographer for magazines such as "Life," "Look," and "Harper's Bazaar" in the late 1940s. It was while on assignment covering Judy Garland in a "A Star is Born" that Willoughby's ability to capture his subjects' spontaneity, humor, and vulnerability, resulting in images that were far different from more traditional film stills, came to Hollywood's attention and earned him his first "Life" magazine cover. Willoughby spent the next 20-plus years working as a set photographer for every major studio, documenting some of most important films of the era and creating intimate portraits of some of Hollywood's greatest celebrities. Technically and stylistically innovative, Willoughby built the first remote radio-controlled cameras used on film sets, pioneered the use of the "silent blimp" for 35mm cameras, and created brackets to mount his cameras directly over the movie cameras to capture the same images. Willoughby moved his family to County Cork, Ireland in 1972, working on only a handful of films through the late 1970s and early 1980s, though he would continue to photograph, exhibit, and publish books for the remainder of his life. The stills in this collection were given by Willoughby to friends in Kilbrittain, Ireland just prior to his move to Vence, France in 1989, where he would remain until his death in 2009. Perhaps more than any other photographer, Willoughby is responsible for creating the the look of mid-century celebrity and moviemaking in the popular imagination, with his images printed in magazines literally every week of his career. But beyond being prolific, Willoughby's legacy rests with his ability capture the essence of the actors he photographed, as well as the films with which those photographs were associated. As Sydney Pollack said in his introduction to Willoughby's autobiography, "Sometimes a filmmaker gets a look at a photograph taken on his own set and sees the 'soul' of his film in one still photograph. It's rare, but it happens. It happened to me in 1969, the first time I looked at the work of Bob Willoughby during the filming of "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" Willoughby's photographs are in the permanent collections of ten museums, including The National Portrait Galleries in Washington, DC and London, the Bibliotheque Nationale de France, The Museum of Modern Art, and The Tate Modern. 13.5 x 9.75 inches (34 x 25 cm). Near Fine.

***** Gerhard Richter began mounting parts of his extensive collection of pictorial material, the pieces that he considered important, on cardboard in sizes between 50 65 and 73.5 51.7 cm more than 50 years ago with the desire of creating order and clarity: private photos, cuttings from newspapers and magazines, sketches, drawings, construction plans, room designs, collages, over-painted photographs as well as draft versions and paintings. Richter soon neglected chronology - his real interest was in iconographical and typological order. As a "work in progress," the ATLAS soon developed into an independent Gesamtkunstwerk mirroring biographical and historical facts - an artistic cosmos of great autonomy and source of all of his thought and creation. After the publication of "War Cut" in 2004, the "artists book" became an important genre in Richters work. A series of autonomous artists books then followed in quick succession. It was only natural that, by 2012, he had begun to consider not only reproducing the ATLAS, but rearranging it as a book. His decision to show all of the plates at a scale of 1:2 makes the monumental archive, with more than 5,000 images, visible in all its details for the first time. Numerous small-format photos, which are hard to appreciate in exhibitions but often contain important pictorial information, are now viewable.

President Nixon signed letter, "Mark Twain" and "China" sent to financier Jack Dreyfus

Washington, DC, March 7, 1962. 6.75" x 9". "Typed Letter Signed ""RN"" as President, 1 page, 6.75"" x 9"". Washington, March 7, 1962. On White House stationery with the blind embossed presidential seal at top center. To financier Jack Dreyfus. With original postmarked White House envelope. Fine condition. In full, ""This is just a note to tell you how delighted I was to find the volumes comprising the complete works of Mark Twain which were awaiting me when I returned from the People's Republic of China. They have already been placed among the other treasured books in my personal library. It is always good to hear from you and I can assure you that this latest gesture of friendship means a great deal to me. Pat joins me in expressing warm personal regards.""On February 17, 1972, President Nixon left the United States and arrived in the People's Republic of China on February 21, 1972. He was the first President to visit a nation not recognized by the United States. Nixon returned to Washington on February 28th. One week later, he wrote the letter here offered.According to Jennifer Schuessler in The New York Times ""Sunday Book Review,"" October 29, 2010, ""Nixon had a thing for the man from Hannibal, Mo., and was even named a Knight of Mark Twain by the International Mark Twain Society when he was Vice President. In a monograph called 'Mark Twain and Richard M. Nixon' (foreword by Herbert Hoover), Cyril Clemens, Twain's distant cousin, recounts a 'pleasant afternoon talk' at the White House during which Nixon recited his lines from a grammar-school play based on 'Tom Sawyer' and praised the novel for purging from the youthful mind 'any desire to smoke, snatch a purse or an unhealthy craving for dope or other such fads.'""Financier Jack Dreyfus (1913-2009) was the founder of the Dreyfus Fund. In 1964, Life magazine called him the “Maverick Wizard Behind the Wall Street Lion,” in reference to the emblem of his fund and its aggressive marketing. Dreyfus, it said, was “the most singular and effective personality to appear in Wall Street since the days of Joseph Kennedy and Bernard Baruch.” His paternal grandfather was a first cousin of Alfred Dreyfus, the protagonist of the late 19th-century anti-Semitic scandal known as the Dreyfus Affair. Dreyfus sold his mutual fund company in 1970 and established the Dreyfus Health Foundation to pursue other medical applications for Dilantin which had cured his depression in the 1960s. In 2000, Dreyfus said that an account in The Arrogance of Power: The Secret World of Richard Nixon by Anthony Summers (New York: Viking, 2000) that he gave Dilantin to Richard Nixon in 1968 was correct. Dreyfus said he gave Nixon a bottle of 1,000 capsules of 100 milligrams each ''when his mood wasn't too good,'' and later gave him another bottle of 1,000 capsules."

        Jasenovac Death Camp Memories

Zagreb: Private, 1962. Typewritten. Good. No Binding. 1st Edition. Croatian text. "It's been three years that I got out of the Jasenovac camp but the horror and terror is not left nor will I ever leave...only now dare to talk about it and in my old shoes my notes on what I finely printed there hid. First few lines from rare typed manuscript of WW2 Croatian concentration camp, 32pps w/ front letter dated 1962 and signed by Svarc whose text described unspeakable horrors. This was sent to Dr. Robert Albahary of Princeton, noted scholar and Jewish fugitive with his family from this area in Yugoslavia. He died in 2009. Wikipedia: Jasenovac concentration camp was an extermination camp established in Slavonia by the authorities of the Independent State of Croatia during World War II. The camp was established by the governing Ustase regime and not operated by Nazi Germany and was one of the largest concentration camps in Europe. From August 1941 it existed in marshland at the confluence of the Sava and Una rivers near the village of Jasenovac. It was dismantled in April 1945. It was "notorious for its barbaric practices and the large number of victims. In Jasenovac, the majority of victims were ethnic Serbs, whom the Ustase wanted to remove along with the Jews, anti-fascist or dissident Croatians, and Romanies. Jasenovac was a complex of five subcamps spread over 210 km2 (81 sq mi) on both banks of the Sava and Una rivers. The largest camp was the "Brickworks" camp at Jasenovac, about 100 km (62 mi) southeast of Zagreb. The overall complex included the Stara Gradiska sub-camp, the killing grounds across the Sava river at Donja Gradina, five work farms, and the Ustica gypsy camp. During and since World War II, there has been much debate and controversy regarding the number of victims killed at the Jasenovac concentration camp complex in its more than three-and-a-half years of operation. This is a rare piece of survival memories about this death camp that has been previously published. Croatian text on onion skin tissue paper..
