Sir Winston Churchill declines an invitation after suffering a broken leg in the French Riviera.

Large iconic image of President Kennedy in the Oval office

Washington, DC, c. 1962. 13.75" x 11". "Black and White Mat photo, 13.75"" x 11"". Soft creasing to the outer white margin not affecting the photo image. The verso includes the Photographer stamp as ""Mr. Ollie Atkins / Washington Photographer / The Saturday Evening Post / P.O. Box 11 / Fairfax Virginia …""A classic image of President John Kennedy sitting in the Oval Office behind the Resolute desk. This iconic desk was a gift from Queen Victoria to President Rutherford B. Hayes and was built from pieces of a salvaged Arctic discovery vessel. With a few exceptions, it has been used in the Oval Office by every President, including Obama. The desk boasts a secret door, an earlier adjustment. Some of the most endearing images of President Kennedy include the President working behind the desk, while his son, John Jr., peers from behind the panel of the secret door. A handsome large photo which would present well framed."

Four typed and signed notes and letters.

      N. p., July-September 1962. - Four letters with their envelopes. 4to and oblong 8vo. Altogether 6 pp. on 6 ff. All addressed to the Russian journalist and poet Igor Mikhailusenko (b. 1932) concerning Russia and the cold war: "[.] I believe that the two German States are equally dangerous. Western Germany is fanatically obsessed with the cold war and Eastern Germany is a cruel, vicious tyranny, capable of keeping its population within its borders only with barbed wire and machine guns. I think that the Government of the Soviet Union and the Government of the United States have a responsibility to come to an agreement which reflects the interests of peace and not the interests of either German State. I think that the problem of West Berlin could be solved in several ways. One would be for a united Berlin to become the seat of the United Nations, another would be for West and East Berlin to become a neutral city under the jurisdiction of the United Nations, and another would be for Berlin to become autonomous, protected through agreement by both East and West [.]" (from the letter of September 5, 1962). - Together with a flyer for Russell's Committee of 100 mass sit-down, originally scheduled for September 9, 1962, but canceled for lack of support. - Generally good, sizes vary.

        Requiem

1962. First Edition . COCTEAU, Jean. Le Requiem. (Paris): Gallimard, (1962). Small quarto, original printed paper wrappers, glassine, uncut and unopened. $3000.First trade edition of this collection of poems, CocteauÂ’s final book, published just a year before his death. This copy warmly inscribed at length by Cocteau and signed by him with his characteristic star flourish to his good friend Maurice Goudeket, who was married to CocteauÂ’s dear friend Colette until her death in 1954.Above the half title, Cocteau has penned the name “Maurice Goudeket.” Below he writes, “Mes amis très cheres, jÂ’ai à peine envoyer ce fleuve des morts dans lÂ’autre bonheur. Avec tendresse, Jean.” In 1920, following publication of her succès de scandale, the novel Chéri, Colette entered the world of modern poetry and painting revolving around Jean Cocteau, who was later her neighbor in Jardins du Palais-Royal. They became great friends, and over the years, both often referred to each other, directly and indirectly, in their books. In 1935, Colette married Maurice Goudeket, whom she described as a “saint,” and who cared for her during her later years. She died in 1954.Goudeket remarried after ColetteÂ’s death. His second wife, the actress (and widow of couturier Lucien Lelong) Sanda Dancovici, bore Goudeket a child when he was 71 years old, about two years before the publication of Le Requiem. Perhaps this is the “bonheur” referenced by Cocteau in his inscription. Cocteau wrote the poems contained in Le Requiem while convalescing from a severe hemorrhage. “Cette perte de sang,” he writes in the Preface, “mÂ’en lassait juste assez pour vivre et pour faire la planche sur le fleuve des morts.” The entire book deals with his hallucinatory near-death experience and his drawn-out recovery, which perhaps also contributes to the somewhat apologetic tone of his inscription. Issued at the same time as 125 numbered copies printed on hand-made paper. Text in French. Small perforated stamp “SP” to margin of final signature and rear free endpaper.Very nearly fine condition, entirely uncut and unopened, warmly inscribed by Cocteau to his close friend.

        Spy Who Loved Me

1962. First Edition . FLEMING, Ian. The Spy Who Loved Me. London: Jonathan Cape, (1962). Octavo, original brown paper boards with silver-gilt, red endpapers, original dust jacket. $3000.First edition of Fleming’s tenth Bond thriller—the author’s unusual examination of his super-spy “from the other end of the gun barrel.”""A significant departure from usual,"" The Spy Who Loved Me, in which 007 appears only toward the end of the book, proved to be ""the easiest thing [Fleming] had ever done"" (Lycett, 381). As he had while composing From Russia, With Love (1957) and Thunderball (1961), the author again toyed with the idea of killing off his phenomenally popular super spy. Although the title page lists the book as being written by Ian Fleming with Vivienne Michel, the ""coauthorship credit is a hoax: Vivienne Michel was the name of the wife of one of Fleming's golfing companions in Jamaica"" (Biondi & Pickard, 47). Fleming ""had become alarmed that his earlier thrillers, designed for an adult audience, were increasingly read in schools… where young people made a hero out of James Bond… He did not regard Bond as a heroic figure 'but only as an efficient professional in his job.' Therefore he had sought to write a 'cautionary tale' to put the record straight, particularly for his younger readers. Unable to do this in his usual narrative style, he had invented a heroine 'through whom I could examine Bond from the other end of the gun barrel, so to speak'"" (Lycett, 401-02). Without quad mark between ""E"" and ""M"" of ""Fleming"" on title page (no priority established). Made into the 1977 film of the same title, starring Roger Moore and Barbara Bach. Gilbert A10a (1.1). Book fine. Light wear to extremities of bright dust jacket with tape repair to the verso of spine head. A near-fine copy.

LOLITA (1962) / SUE LYON BY STANLEY KUBRICK

MGM 1962 - Vintage original 10 x 8" (25 x 20 cm.) black-and-white single weight glossy silver gelatin print still photo, UK. James Mason, Shelley Winters, Sue Lyon, Peter Sellers, Lois Maxwell, dir: Stanley Kubrick; MGM. One of the most iconic movie posters of all time. An extremely rare behind-the-scenes portrait image of star Sue Lyon, as photographed by Stanley Kubrick himself. Although many photos from this film have been attributed to Kubrick, this is the only one we have ever handled which can be clearly identified as his work. Very controversial was the novel by Vladimir Nabokov (who did the adapted screenplay) about a 40-something French literature professor and his obsession with the 12 year-old daughter of his landlady. And very controversial to this day is the film. The censors were after the script from day one, and Lolita's age had to be raised to 14. In the end, Kubrick

Fantastic large photo of President Kennedy with John Glen and LBJ

n.p., c. 1962. 13.5" x 10.25". "Glossy black and white photo, 13.5"" x 10.25"", depicting President Kennedy, John Glen and Lyndon Baynes Johnson, circa 1962. Several corner creases with other very faint soft horizontal creasing, else near fine. Verso has light pencil marks and the official Saturday Evening Post stamp of ""Mr. Ollie Atkins / Washington Photographer / The Saturday Evening Post / 1000 - 16th St. N. W. / Washington 6 D.C.""A wonderful image, frozen in time, of President Kennedy with John Glen and Lyndon Baynes Johnson. President John F. Kennedy, met with John Glen both at Cape Canaveral as well as in Washington DC. and presented him NASA's Distinguished Service Medal after orbiting the planet three times in his little capsule, Friendship 7. In the five hours of his flight on Feb. 20, 1962, Mr. Glenn joined a select roster of Americans whose feats have seized the country’s imagination and come to embody a moment in its history, figures like Lewis and Clark, the Wright brothers and Charles Lindbergh. The Cold War had long stoked fears of nuclear destruction, and the Russians seemed to be winning the contest with their unsettling ascent into outer space. Two Russians had already orbited Earth the year before, overshadowing the feats of two Americans, Alan B. Shepard and Virgil I. Grissom, who had been launched only to the fringes of space. In his political history of the space age, “The Heavens and the Earth” author Walter A. McDougall described Mr. Glenn’s space mission as a “national catharsis unparalleled.” “It seemed that he had given Americans back their self-respect,” Mr. McDougall added, “and more than that — it seemed Americans dared again to hope.”John Glenn did not return to space for a long time. Kennedy thought him too valuable as a hero to risk losing in an accident. And in ultimate irony, it was Kennedy who died just a year later."

An Extraordinary Sketchbook of Special Importance, reserved for high points of the artist's creative process.

OFFERING: A sketchbook of Belgian artist, Simone Schmidt reserved solely for high points of her creative process. The deeply felt works offer a pictorial record of the soul of the artist. THE SKETCHBOOK: with 17 finished Brussels landscapes, including in Uccle and Nassogne, is dated, "de 1962 à 73" on the upper side. Each drawing is done in charcoal on one side of the paper with other media, two with pastel, two with gouache and thirteen with pencil. Drawings were done in clusters, 8 in 1964, 3 in 1968, 3 in 1970 and 3 in 1973. The sketchbook ends with two rhapsodic, three-color abstract gouaches that are both the summation of a lifetime of making art and a leap forward. DOCUMENTATION: 15 landscape drawings have identified views. Two identified views are signed and dated and eleven are dated. Two unidentified views are also dated. There is no documentation for the final two works but they can be reliably dated to 1973. CONDITION: Sketchbook Sheets: bright and clean, a few with slightly bent tips, a few with light edgewear. / Covers: scattered spots and stains, some edgewear. / Binding: solid and reliable, wire hole no. 35 slit. FORMAT: Spiral wire bound, cardstock on the upper side, board on the lower side, ten drawings oriented on the long side, seven on the short side. SIZE: 210 x 270 mm. DRAWINGS DESCRIBED IN IMAGES: No. 4 (1964); charcoal & pencil, a composition, from which emanates a deep wellspring of feeling not often found in modern European art. It continues an exploration of boundaries that imbue with mystery the structures they delineate. A grouping of houses follows the contour of the bottom of a slope. Beyond, a hill rises to an unseen summit; in the foreground, curving back towards the viewer, houses and sheds along a curve of roadway; between them, a stand of trees, leaning away from the viewer towards an unseen sun, forms a field of energy, a mystery of growing. / No. 11 (1968); charcoal & pencil, oriented towards the vertical, a landscape that is a recognizable pattern of hills, trees, homes, cows, and vegetation but also something largely unrecognizable, unknowable and alive. A highly original drawing that strikes out against the idea of a placid, well-ordered countryside and exploits every aspect of the charcoal medium to create a palpable sense of wonder and a living, evolving expanse. / No. 13 (1970); pencil & charcoal, a superb, mystical, representation of the unfolding of the land, showing a high hill view to low hills and lowlands beyond and a ridge running across the horizon. Roads, fields, hills, tumuli, protuberances of rocks and vegetation; arboreal masses and the distant horizon; all become tissue of the earth. / No. 16 (ca. 1973); charcoal & gouache, oriented towards the vertical, a deeply felt, rhapsodic abstract exploring being in the light. ADDITIONAL IMAGES: by request.

gedanken und farbe. erzählt / geformt. [Manuskript].

[Gotha]. Kurt W. Streubel. [1962]. 16 x 15 cm. 45 unpaginierte Blatt. Zusammen in Papp-Kassette. Kurt W. Streubel, geboren 1921 in Starkstadt / Böhmen, gestorben 2002 in Weimar.
