The popular Pultizer Prize-winning novel by Harper Lee became one of the best-loved films of the 1960s. Much of this was because of Gregory Peck's sublime performance as Atticus Finch, and because of all the great performances, direction and Oscar-winning screenplay.         The Spy Who Loved Me

London: Jonathan Cape,, 1962. Sextodecimo. Original dark grey boards, titles to spine in silver, dagger design to front board in silver and blind, red endpapers. With the dust jacket. Double-page spread illustration pp. 6-7. Dust jacket corners clipped, some light staining to rear panel, very light toning; an excellent copy. First edition, first impression. The tenth of the Bond books to be published. This novel is the only Bond book to be written in the first person, presented as the testimony of a 23-year-old Canadian woman, Vivienne Michel with whom Bond has an ill-fated affair. Bond himself does not appear until two thirds of the way through the book. In furtherance of this pretence, Michel gets a spurious credit on the title page as co-author, whose manuscript allegedly simply appeared on Fleming's desk. When issued it was banned in some countries, being the most sexually explicit of Fleming's novels. The Spy Who Loved Me was Roger Moore's fourth Bond film, released in 1977. However when Fleming sold the film rights to Harry Saltzman and Albert R. Broccoli he only gave permission for the title to be used rather than any aspects of the plot.

Housed in a custom clamshell box. $2750.First edition of this groundbreaking early paper by the co-winner of the 2012 Nobel Prize in Economics, Lloyd Shapley."This year’s prize-winning work encompasses a theoretical framework for analyzing resource allocation, as well as empirical studies and actual redesign of real-world institutions such as labor-market clearinghouses and school admissions procedures. The foundations for the theoretical framework were laid in 1962, when David Gale and Lloyd Shapley published a mathematical inquiry into a certain class of allocation problems [the present paper] The person chiefly responsible for the development of cooperative game theory is Lloyd Shapley In collaboration with D. Gale, H. Scarf and M. Shubik, Shapley created the theory of matching markets. Launching the theory, Gale and Shapley (1962) expressed the hope that one day it would have practical applications. This hope has been fulfilled by the emerging literature on market design" (Scientific Background on the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel [commonly known as the Nobel Prize in Economics] 2012). Had Gale lived, it is virtually certain he would have shared the Nobel with Shapley and Alvin E. Roth. Owner inkstamp to front wrapper.Spine and front wrapper lightly tanned. Near-fine condition.         IF A MAN ANSWERS (1962)

Universal 1962 - Vintage original 30 x 40" (75 x 100 cm., board); 16 ½ x 35 ½" (41 x 87 cm., painting) production set sketch, USA. Sandra Dee, Bobby Darin, Micheline Presle, John Lund, Cesar Romero, Stefanie Powers, dir: Henry Levin; Universal. Lighthearted romantic comedy, so popular at the time, about a wealthy young socialite (Sandra Dee) who marries a photographer (Bobby Darin), and the complications which ensue when she follows her mother's advice regarding an envious friend. This film was a big glossy Ross Hunter production with costumes by Jean Louis and art direction by Alexander Golitzen, set décor by Howard Bristol. This oversize production rendering, accomplished in ink and paint, of Chantel's bedroom on her wedding day, is evidence of the extravagant production. The painting is not signed, but art director Alexander Golitzen is named on the signage attached to the bottom left of the board. The painting on paper is attached to heavy artboard. Some staining to the board and the top right corner is chipped. NEAR FINE

        LOLITA (1962)

MGM 1962 - Vintage original 41 x 27" (102 x 68 cm.) one sheet poster, USA. James Mason, Shelley Winters, Sue Lyon, Peter Sellers, Lois Maxwell, dir: Stanley Kubrick; MGM. One of the most iconic movie posters of all-time. Very controversial was the novel by Vladimir Nabokov (who did the adapted screenplay) about a 40-something French literature professor and his obsession for the 12-year-old daughter of his landlady. Very controversial to this day is the film. The censors were after the script from day one, and Lolita's age had to be raised to 14. In the end, Kubrick, un-credited, actually wrote much of the script as presented on screen. Nevertheless, it was Nabokov who received the Academy Award nomination for Best Writing - Screenplay based on material from another medium. This famous image of Sue Lyon as Lolita, wearing the heart-shaped sunglasses, is a portrait by Bert Stern. The image was used for publicity only; cat-eyed sunglasses were used in the film. Amongs those considered for and offered the role of Humbert were Marlon Brando, David Niven, Cary Grant and Errol Flynn (who passed before production started). Amongs the other Lolita potentials were Joey Heatherton and Haley Mills; in both cases, their well-known fathers vetoed the casting! Peter Sellers based his peculiar voice on that of Stanley Kubrick. Poster is folded and appears to be unused. There is only the minutest of edge and fold wear. FINE

Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

New York: Atheneum, 1962. - First edition, first printing. INSCRIBED by Albee on title page. SIGNED by Richard Barr on dedication page; the play is dedicated to him and to the co-producer Clinton Wilder. Fine copy in Near Fine dust jacket that has some wrinkling near spine ends, a small crease near bottom edge of front flap; jacket is now covered in a removable acid-free mylar protector. The inscribee apparently corrected the misspelling of his last name by Albee. Richard Barr had a 50 year career in the New York theater as an actor (with the Orson Welles Mercury Theater), director, and most prominently as a producer. He won his first Tony Award as producer of this play, his second for the first production of Sweeney Todd. He was president of The League of American Theaters and Producers in the 20 years before his death in 1989. From his NY Times obituary: ''He was my mentor and one of my dearest friends,'' Mr. Albee said. ''I shall miss him greatly.'' [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Silent Spring

Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1962 I inherited this signed copy of the 1st Edition of Silent Spring from my Mother who was a personal friend of Rachel Carson for a number of years in the Washington DC area until the time of Carson's death. This book is in overall excellent condition and the dust jacket is in very good condition for its age. What makes this book more unique is the signature and its provenance. It's signed Best wishes, Rachel Carson. Most of the signed books just have the author's name. In addition the book belonged to my mother, a friend of Carson's. My mother passed away a number of years ago but gave the book to me and told me about her friendship with the author. My mother wrote her name and address on the inside cover of the book. I can provide a signed letter of provenance about their friendship. This book is great for a collector who would not only like a signed copy of the 1st Edition in good condition but would also like a copy of the book that was owned by a friend of the author.

Set of 20 Issues of Divadlo

Prague: Divadlo (1962-1968) - First Edition. Oblong octavos. Set of 20 issues of the Czech dance and theater journal Divadlo. Profusely illustrated with numerous black-and-white photographs of actors on and off the stage, including the first appearance of Josef Koudelka's photographs in print. Issued by the avant-garde company Divadlo Za Branou, or Theater Beyond the Gate, led by Otomar Krejca, the journal highlighted late twentieth century developments in European performance. Koudelka began his professional photographic career with the company, demonstrating an early proclivity toward modernist aesthetics and abstract forms that he would continue in his renowned later work. Each issue includes articles, interviews, and script excerpts. Text in Czech. Not a complete run of all of his early appearances, but close. Uniformly very good in photo-illustrated wrappers.         A letter from Winston Churchill's close friend and indispensable wartime Chief of Staff, General Lord Hastings Lionel "Pug" Ismay seeking a copy of Churchill's first book less than a month after Churchill's death and in the final year of Ismay's own life Found in a first printing copy Churchill's Frontiers and Wars

London: Eyre & Spottiswoode, 1962. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. Winston Churchill's close friend and indispensable wartime Chief of Staff, "Pug" Ismay, wrote this letter seeking a copy of Churchill's first book less than a month after Churchill's death and in the final year of Ismay's own life. The letter is on Ismay?s letterhead bearing his printed address and telephone number. The typed date is ?17th. February 1965.? The typed text reads ?Could you be an angel and lend me your copy of ?The Story of the Malakand Field Force? as I badly need a quotation for an article that I am writing. If you will send it by registered post I will return it by the same means within three days. Love to you both,? The letter bears Ismay?s autograph salutation, ?My dear Mike?, valediction, ?Y[ours] ? Ever? and is signed with his famous nickname, ?Pug?. The recipient, typed at the foot of the letter, was ?M. Holden-White. Esq.? of ?10, Lowndes Street, Lowndes Square. S.W.1.? Of General Lord Hastings Lionel ?Pug? Ismay, 1st Baron Ismay (1887-1965), Churchill said: ?We became hand in glove and much more?? (Churchill, The Gathering Storm) When Churchill became Prime Minister in May 1940, he also assumed appointment as Minister of Defence. Ismay served Churchill as Chief of Staff in that capacity, and in other roles, including Deputy Secretary to the War Cabinet, for Churchill?s entire wartime premiership. ?Shrewd, resilient, accessible, emollient in diplomacy but of an unbreachable integrity?, Ismay ??commanded the prime minister's absolute trust. He was the essential link with the chiefs of staff... Difficult allies respected him as much as did difficult colleagues.? (ODNB) Ismay was promoted Lieutenant-General in 1942 and General in 1944, and made Baron in 1947. When Churchill?s second premiership began in October 1951, Ismay was first appointed Secretary of State for Commonwealth Relations and, swiftly thereafter, Secretary-General of NATO, a post he held until his retirement in 1957. In late 1960, Ismay published his own Memoirs, which include a prefatory Tribute from Churchill ?to the signal services which Lord Ismay has rendered to our country, and to the free world, in peace and war.? It is poignant that Ismay sought Churchill?s first published book so soon after the death of his friend and so near to his own. Like Churchill, Ismay was educated at Sandhurst and saw early service as a cavalry officer in India. Although, unlike Churchill, Ismay did not leave soldiering for politics, even his early career was deeply shaped by his future Prime Minister and patron. In his Memoirs, Ismay wrote that ?As a young officer in India in 1910, Mr. Winston Churchill, whom I had never met, and, as it then seemed, was unlikely ever to meet, exercised a decisive influence on my future.? Despite shock that ?anyone who had started so brilliantly should have thrown it all up and gone into Parliament? Ismay was critically inspired by Churchill?s intrepid early accomplishments. Ismay felt ?on the whole, I could not do better than try to emulate the example of his early years.? Of course, the earliest of these early years are chronicled in Churchill?s first published book, The Story of the Malakand Field Force, which recounts Churchill's experiences while attached to Sir Bindon Blood's punitive expedition on the Northwest Frontier of India in 1897. The edition of the text most readily available in February 1965 was Frontiers and Wars. Published in 1962, this is a single volume abridgement of Churchill's first four war books, including The Story of the Malakand Field Force. This is not a compellingly well-preserved first printing copy of Frontiers and Wars, showing sunning, soiling, and wear. But it is the copy in which Lord Ismay?s letter was found and it seems quite plausible that this was the very copy lent in response to his request. Hence we offer them together and encourage the future owner to keep them thus. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A274.1.a, Woods/ICS A142/1(a.1), Langworth p.340.

Eyre & Spottiswoode, London 1962 - Winston Churchill's close friend and indispensable wartime Chief of Staff, "Pug" Ismay, wrote this letter seeking a copy of Churchill's first book less than a month after Churchill's death and in the final year of Ismay's own life. The letter is on Ismay’s letterhead bearing his printed address and telephone number. The typed date is "17th. February 1965." The typed text reads "Could you be an angel and lend me your copy of "The Story of the Malakand Field Force" as I badly need a quotation for an article that I am writing. If you will send it by registered post I will return it by the same means within three days. Love to you both," The letter bears Ismay’s autograph salutation, "My dear Mike", valediction, "Y[ours] – Ever" and is signed with his famous nickname, "Pug". The recipient, typed at the foot of the letter, was "M. Holden-White. Esq." of "10, Lowndes Street, Lowndes Square. S.W.1." Of General Lord Hastings Lionel "Pug" Ismay, 1st Baron Ismay (1887-1965), Churchill said: "We became hand in glove and much more " (Churchill, The Gathering Storm) When Churchill became Prime Minister in May 1940, he also assumed appointment as Minister of Defence. Ismay served Churchill as Chief of Staff in that capacity, and in other roles, including Deputy Secretary to the War Cabinet, for Churchill’s entire wartime premiership. "Shrewd, resilient, accessible, emollient in diplomacy but of an unbreachable integrity", Ismay " commanded the prime minister's absolute trust. He was the essential link with the chiefs of staff. Difficult allies respected him as much as did difficult colleagues." (ODNB) Ismay was promoted Lieutenant-General in 1942 and General in 1944, and made Baron in 1947. When Churchill’s second premiership began in October 1951, Ismay was first appointed Secretary of State for Commonwealth Relations and, swiftly thereafter, Secretary-General of NATO, a post he held until his retirement in 1957. In late 1960, Ismay published his own Memoirs, which include a prefatory Tribute from Churchill "to the signal services which Lord Ismay has rendered to our country, and to the free world, in peace and war." It is poignant that Ismay sought Churchill’s first published book so soon after the death of his friend and so near to his own. Like Churchill, Ismay was educated at Sandhurst and saw early service as a cavalry officer in India. Although, unlike Churchill, Ismay did not leave soldiering for politics, even his early career was deeply shaped by his future Prime Minister and patron. In his Memoirs, Ismay wrote that "As a young officer in India in 1910, Mr. Winston Churchill, whom I had never met, and, as it then seemed, was unlikely ever to meet, exercised a decisive influence on my future." Despite shock that "anyone who had started so brilliantly should have thrown it all up and gone into Parliament" Ismay was critically inspired by Churchill’s intrepid early accomplishments. Ismay felt "on the whole, I could not do better than try to emulate the example of his early years." Of course, the earliest of these early years are chronicled in Churchill’s first published book, The Story of the Malakand Field Force, which recounts Churchill's experiences while attached to Sir Bindon Blood's punitive expedition on the Northwest Frontier of India in 1897.
