        Symmetries of Baryons and Mesons

Lancaster, PA and New York, NY: American Inst, 1962. FIRST EDITION of Murray Gell-Mann's Nobel-Prize winning work on the discovery of the "Eightfold Way" "Gell-Mann, as naturalist, collector, and categorizer, was well primed to interpret the exploding particle universe of the 1960s. New technology in the accelerators- liquid hydrogen bubble chambers and computers for automating the analysis of collision tracks- seemed to have spilled open a bulky canvas bag from which nearly a hundred distinct particles had now tumbled forth. Gell-Mann and, independently, an Israeli theorist, Yuval Ne'eman, found a way in 1961 to organize the various symmetries of spins and strangeness into a single scheme. It was a group, in the mathematicians' sense of the word, known as SU(3), though Gell-Mann quickly and puckishly dubbed it the Eightfold Way. It was like an intricate translucent object which, when held to the light, would reveal families of eight or ten or possibly twenty-seven particles- and they would be different, though overlapping, families, depending on which way one chose to view it. The Eightfold Way was a new periodic table- the previous century's triumph in classifying and thus exposing the hidden regularities in a similar number of disparate 'elements.' But it was also a more dynamic object. The operations of group theory were like special shuffles of a deck of cards or the twists of a Rubik's cube."Much of SU(3)'s power came from the way it embodied a concept increasingly central to the high-energy theorist's way of working: the concept of inexact symmetry, almost symmetry, near symmetry, or- the term that won out- broken symmetry. The particle world was full of near misses in its symmetries, a dangerous problem, since it seemed to permit an ad hoc escape route whenever an expected relationship failed to match. Broken symmetry implied a process, a change in status... Many of the broken symmetries of particle physics came to seem like choices the universe made when it condensed from a hot chaos into cooler matter, spiked as it is with so many hard-edged, asymmetrical contingencies."Once again Gell-Mann trusted his scheme enough to predict, as a consequence of broken symmetry, a specific hitherto-unseen particle. This, the omega minus, duly turned up in 1964- a thirty-three-experimenter team had to canvass more than one million feet of photographs- and Gell-Mann's Nobel Prize followed five years later" (James Gleick, Genius).Particle Physics, One Hundred Years of Discoveries: "Introduction of the SU(3) singlet-octet structure of the known mesons and octet-decuplet structure for the baryons. Prediction of the ?- hyperon. Nobel prize to M. Gell-Mann awarded in 1969 'for his contributions and discoveries concerning the classification of elementary particles and their reactions'." NOTE: Gell-Mann first introduced the concept of the Eightfold Way in a 1961 Cal. Inst. Tech Report (CTSL-20) before developing his ideas more fully in his famous paper in The Physical Review. In: The Physical Review, Vol 125, pp. 1067-1084. Lancaster, PA and New York, NY: American Institute of Physics, 1962. Quarto, original printed wrappers; custom box. A little spotting to spine, otherwise fine. Fine.

Otto Preminger Films / Art Krebs Studio 1962 - Vintage original 35 x 25" (87 x 62 cm.) silkscreen poster, USA. Franchot Tone, Lew Ayres, Henry Fonda, Walter Pidgeon, Charles Laughton, Don Murray, Gene Tierney, dir: Otto Preminger; Otto Preminger Films. The first Hollywood studio film to feature a main character who is bisexual. Based on Allen Drury's Pulitzer Prize-winning political shocker of 1959 (but detached from the novel's Cold War agenda) about how American government functions in a free society. Robert Leffingwell is the president's candidate for Secretary of State who must go under investigation to determine his qualifications. The man leading the investigation, Senator Brigham Anderson, discovers Leffingwell's past affiliations with the Communist Party, but upon testimony Leffingwell is proven innocent. It is later discovered that he lied under oath and Senator Anderson pleads with the president to denounce his affiliation with Leffingwell, even as Anderson himself is blackmailed for his own past (being a closet homosexual). Our friend, poster collector and dealer Daniel Strebin, provided this information: About a decade ago, he received consignments of Saul Bass silkscreens from the Bass estate. He personally saw invoices for some of them which were printed around 1965. Most of the silkscreens were produced at Art Krebs Studio in Los Angeles. Bass continued to have silkscreens created up until around 1980. All of the silkscreen editions appear to have been in editions of between 50-150. It also seems that once an edition was exhausted, Bass did not make a second edition; as a result, all of these art silkscreens are very rare indeed. Bass never intended for these posters to be sold -- they were intended to be given away. Since he was frequently frustrated with the compromises the film studios inflicted on his magnificent modernist designs, the silkscreens were intended to represent his imagery in its purest possible form. This poster is unused and has a minor bit of creasing along the left edge and one tiny left edge tear, JUST ABOUT FINE

Portrait photographique en médaillon d'Alexandre Dumas avec sa signature autographe

Original photograph of Maurice Blanchot standing against a wall.silver vintage print."Blanchot took a long time to challenge photographers and cartoonists of the literary press. Minimalist and extremely rare, on so many years, are the illustrations sketches in 1962 in the Express, a hand waving a book, on page background; in 1979, in Libération, a blank square in the middle of the page, with any legend for the name of Maurice Blanchot and a quote from infinity Maintenance ( "a world of empty: nothing was visible, nothing that was invisible" ) "(C. Bident, Maurice Blanchot). In 1986, during an exhibition of portraits of writers, he asked that his picture be replaced with a text indicating its desire to "appear the least, not to exalt [his] books, but to avoid the presence of an author who claims to own existence. "A photo taken unwittingly by a paparazzo on a supermarket parking lot, will long serve as writer's portrait before his friend Emmanuel Levinas reveals few portraits of their youth.Maurice Blanchot does not object to such disclosure, as this is the fact of his closest friend, could be explained by what Bident called "spacing of concern," the inactuality of portraits unveiled echoing the postponed publications Idyll, The Last word, death Sentence ...).Only a few photographs gathered in the center pages of the number of Herne's Cahiers devoted to Maurice Blanchot complement these unique pictures of the writer's most secret of the twentieth century. In his chapter "The indisposition of secrecy", Christophe Bident devotes several pages to the almost total absence of this image invisible partner, questioning the intellectual and psychological motivations of the writer yet aware of the inevitable revelation to come up,"Everything must become public. The secret must be broken. The obscure must enter the day and emerge. What can not say yet is s hearing. Quidquid latet apparebit, all that is hidden, that is what should appear ...         26 Etchings by Shelly Fink....

Alford, MA: 1962. Small quarto. 28ff. One of forty copies. Etched title page and twenty-six fine etchings by Fink, ranging thematically from portraits to botany, to insects. Many of Fink's etchings have a decidedly Baskinesque aesthetic, but Fink's circle centered primarily in New York, where he was friendly with Jack Levine and Raphael Soyer. For this collection, Fink commissioned Royall Moore to create paper with a high linen count, and this was the subject of a Popular Mechanics article in 1965. Moore, who was described in the article as an "inventive Yankee," was a carpenter by trade, and made all the equipment himself. The binding for this edition was executed by Arno Werner, who bound it in full deerskin with a hubbed spine and decorations printed in black on the upper cover and spine. Werner also presumably made the marbled endpapers, which also decorate the deerskin-backed folding case. Some minor wear to extremtites of the box, otherwise fine and bright....

        The Spy Who Loved Me

London: Jonathan Cape,, 1962. Sextodecimo. Original dark grey boards, titles to spine in silver, dagger design to front board in silver and blind, red endpapers. With the dust jacket. Double-page spread illustration pp. 6-7. Dust jacket corners clipped, some light staining to rear panel, very light toning; an excellent copy. First edition, first impression. The tenth of the Bond books to be published. This novel is the only Bond book to be written in the first person, presented as the testimony of a 23-year-old Canadian woman, Vivienne Michel with whom Bond has an ill-fated affair. Bond himself does not appear until two thirds of the way through the book. In furtherance of this pretence, Michel gets a spurious credit on the title page as co-author, whose manuscript allegedly simply appeared on Fleming's desk. When issued it was banned in some countries, being the most sexually explicit of Fleming's novels. The Spy Who Loved Me was Roger Moore's fourth Bond film, released in 1977. However when Fleming sold the film rights to Harry Saltzman and Albert R. Broccoli he only gave permission for the title to be used rather than any aspects of the plot.

The foundations for the theoretical framework were laid in 1962, when David Gale and Lloyd Shapley published a mathematical inquiry into a certain class of allocation problems [the present paper] The person chiefly responsible for the development of cooperative game theory is Lloyd Shapley In collaboration with D. Gale, H. Scarf and M. Shubik, Shapley created the theory of matching markets. Launching the theory, Gale and Shapley (1962) expressed the hope that one day it would have practical applications. This hope has been fulfilled by the emerging literature on market design" (Scientific Background on the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel [commonly known as the Nobel Prize in Economics] 2012). Had Gale lived, it is virtually certain he would have shared the Nobel with Shapley and Alvin E. Roth. Owner inkstamp to front wrapper.Spine and front wrapper lightly tanned. Near-fine condition.         IF A MAN ANSWERS (1962)

Universal 1962 - Vintage original 30 x 40" (75 x 100 cm., board); 16 ½ x 35 ½" (41 x 87 cm., painting) production set sketch, USA. Sandra Dee, Bobby Darin, Micheline Presle, John Lund, Cesar Romero, Stefanie Powers, dir: Henry Levin; Universal. Lighthearted romantic comedy, so popular at the time, about a wealthy young socialite (Sandra Dee) who marries a photographer (Bobby Darin), and the complications which ensue when she follows her mother's advice regarding an envious friend. This film was a big glossy Ross Hunter production with costumes by Jean Louis and art direction by Alexander Golitzen, set décor by Howard Bristol. This oversize production rendering, accomplished in ink and paint, of Chantel's bedroom on her wedding day, is evidence of the extravagant production. The painting is not signed, but art director Alexander Golitzen is named on the signage attached to the bottom left of the board. The painting on paper is attached to heavy artboard. Some staining to the board and the top right corner is chipped. NEAR FINE
