Larry McMurtry
USA: Harper, 1961. Stated First Edition/First Printing; A very good plus book in a very good original dust jacket. SIGNED by the author on the front free end paper with an early, complete signature (rare to have a complete, legible signature) with no inscription. A handsome copy of this author's first work, later adapted into the movie "Hud"; scarce in this condition, particularly signed. This copy is in very good plus condition with mild foxing and light staining to the text block, some minor crimping to the spine ends, both hinges mildly loose, and some very light rubbing to the edges, else NF to Fine. Housed in a very good dust jacket that is clean and bright with minor rubbing to the the fold edges and spine head, a very small loss of material to the spine foot, and an area on the spine that appears to have had some minor repair (please see scans). Overall, a very handsome example of this rare title; not price clipped, not remaindered, not ex-library. Protected in a mylar cover and shipped in a sturdy box.

Joseph Heller
USA: Simon & Schuster, 1961. Very Good/Near Fine. First Edition/Stated First Printing; A very good book in a near fine or better original dust jacket. An outstanding example of this classic of 20th century literature and basis for many movie and TV adaptations. This volume is in very good condition showing some light sunning and fading to the boards, mild foxing to the page ends with just some minor age spotting to a few of the pages, some light shelf wear to the spine ends, and a slightly loose front hinge to the first 10-12 pages (binding completely intact and square). Housed in a beautiful, original dust jacket that shows only some light rubbing and creasing to the spine ends and top edges, else fine. Not price clipped ($5.95 intact) and not ex-library. Protected by a custom clamshell case that shows only trivial shelf wear. This book is getting exceedingly rare in collectible condition, particularly with a dust jacket like this one; this would be a cornerstone piece to anyone's 20th century literature collection. In archival protection and ships in a sturdy box. [Attributes: First Edition; In Dust Jacket]

Niebuhr, Reinhold
Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1961. The two volumes bound together, with the original page-numbering of Volume Two unchanged "so that references given in other current works will cause no confusion to readers." A very good copy with NO original dust jacket. Instead, previous owner Prof. Karl Paul Donfried has wrapped the green cloth boards here in a clear, tight-fitting mylar sheet which is neatly tucked and adhered to the pastedowns. As this is reasonably attractive and has protected the book well, we have left undisturbed. Last copyright date showing is 1949, but Scribner's date code to copyright page "J-3.61 [H]" could indicate a print date as late as 1961. Signed "Reinhold Niebuhr" (name only) in blue ink to the title page (matches other Niebuhr signatures in our possession.) Karl Paul Donfried's red-and-black Harvard bookplate to front pastedown. Author Karl Paul Reinhold Niebuhr (1892-1971) was an American Reformed theologian, ethicist, commentator on public affairs, and professor at the Union Theological Seminary for more than 30 years. The Modern Library ranks "The Nature and Destiny of Man," his best known work, 18th among the top 100 non-fiction books of the Twentieth Century. Historian Arthur Schlesinger Jr. described Niebuhr as "the most influential American theologian of the 20th century." Although a Socialist, Niebuhr supported American efforts to contain Soviet Communism. Previous owner of this copy Karl Paul Donfried, a graduate of Columbia and Harvard, earned his doctorate at the University of Heidelberg in 1968 and was ordained by the Lutheran Church …

Paris: Buchet/Chastel, 1961. Fine. Buchet/Chastel, Paris 1961, 14x19cm, broché. - First edition of the French translation of one of the reference works on the Nazi concentration camp system. Of a rare rarity, this French translation of the first book of Primo Levi will pass unnoticed as the original Italian edition published in 1947. It will be necessary to wait for the suicide of its author in 1987 for a second French edition to be published and that this fundamental testimony on the Holocaust becomes this emblematic work of concentration camp literature. michael Causse's translation reflects the difficulty of transcribing the words of the witnesses of the unspeakable. But it is especially the unconscious refusal to hear this word that contributed to the failure of this first book by Primo Levi like that of Robert Antelme's The Human Species, also written and published for the first time in 1947. It is only during this decade that some of the greatest works on the Holocaust will be published successively: The Night of Elie Wiesel, 1958; The sand luggage of Anna Langfus, 1962; The great trip of Jorge Semprun, 1963; The Truce of Primo Levi, 1963, None of us will return from Charlotte Delbo, 1965 ... Rare and beautiful copy of the first translation of Primo Levi's most important book. KONEN, Valentina.
Moscow: Sovietskii kompozitor, 1961. Moscow: Sovietskii kompozitor,, 1961. Octavo. Original ecru cloth, title to spine and front board in gilt and blue. Illustrations and notation to the text, 47 pages of notation at the rear. A little rubbed, slightly cocked, two damp-spots to the rear board, light browning, overall very good. First edition, first impression, print-run of 5000. Detailed overview of American jazz. Soviet musicologist Valentina Konen (1909-1991) was one of the leading authorities on jazz culture in USSR. Born in Baku she left Russia after the October Revolution and spent 10 years in USA, studying at Juilliard (1924-9) specialising in piano. During her time in America she was part of the circle that gathered around Charles Seeger, who was lecturing at both Julliard and the New School for Social Research. Konen returned in USSR in 1931 to study at the history and theory department of the Moscow Conservatory, graduating in 1938 with a doctoral thesis on the musical culture in USA. She lectured in the history of foreign music at the Conservatory between 1938 and 1949 also teaching at the Gnesin Music Teachers College from 1944. In 1949 she was accused of being a "cosmopolite" and fired, being exiled to the Urals, where she was a professor at the Urals Conservatory, 1949–51. In 1960, rehabilitated, Konen became a senior research worker at the Institute of the History of the Arts, under the aegis of the Ministry of Culture of the USSR. The somewhat neutral title of this work can be accounted for by Konen's troubled career path, which shadows the vexed history o … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

Stanislaw Lem
Wydawnictwo Faber. Polish first edition is very good, UK first edition very good plus. Stanisław Lem (1961 and 1971) 'Solaris', the true first edition published in Polish by Wydawnictwo Ministerstwa Obrony Narodowej in 1961; as well as the UK first edition published by Faber and Faber in 1971. A landmark science fiction novel which was first translated into French in 1964. The first English-language translation only appeared in 1970 in the US. Adapted three times as a movie (in 1968 by Nirenburg; the best known Tarkowsky adaptation from 1972; and the recent Soderbergh film from 2002). A philosophical and intelligent science fiction read that has had a huge impact on the genre. Condition: the Polish edition is very good. It is a paperback original so time takes its toll on the paper especially on Communist quality paper. The dust jacket is remarkably well preserved as depicted. There are no previous owner's inscriptions or any other internal damage. The first print run was with 10,000 copies modest, but not small in modern terms. However, very few people cared about book collecting in Poland especially during Communism when people worried about our issues. Moreover, paper itself was a scarce commodity in the 1980s and people often donated old books for toilet paper (no joke). Hence, this is a very hard to find first edition. The UK first edition is very good plus/ near fine with slight shelf wear and just a whiff of foxing to the upper page block (hardly visible). First and Fine. [Attributes: First Edition]

PERCY, WALKER
New York: Knopf, 1961. First edition. A fine copy in quarter-backed red cloth and blue paper-backed boards with gilt and black spine lettering and designs on the spine and front panel, with slight toning to the endpapers, in a fine, professionally-restored dustwrapper, bright and without blemish. This book narrates the life of a young stock-broker in New Orleans, troubled by the decline of Southern tradition, family problems, and his traumatic experiences in the Korean War. Movies and books seem more real to him than life itself. He decides to journey to other places in search of himself and of life itself. Percy's voice caught the attention of serious readers and he won the U.S. National Book Award for this book. Time magazine included the novel in its "100 Best English-language Novels" and the Modern Library ranked The Moviegoer sixtieth on its list of the hundred best English-language novels of the twentieth century. It has been professionally restored and is bright and fine. The book is housed in a fine slipcase covered with black cloth and with a leather label and gilt titles to the spine. Percy's best-known work, which won the National Book Award in 1962. Time Magazine calls it one of the 100 best English-language novels written between 1923 and 2005. Military Publisher of the Defense Ministry of the USSR--1961-1965. This is the official Soviet history of that country's role in World War II. The books are bound in pale blue/green buckram, with gilt lettering on both spine and front panel; the front panel has a 3-1/2" x 4-1/2" image blind-stamped at the top--the figure is a statue of a heroic soldier with his sword and cradling and protecting a small child. All six volumes are profusely illustrated with era photos, color plates, propaganda posters and numerous color maps, many of them fold-out. Set includes a separate album with fourteen additional fold-out maps. All six volumes are also completely free of writing, stray marks, highlighting, underlining, marginal notes, stains and page damage. Condition:  VG+  The set was purchased from Viktor Kamkin in 1970 or 1971 for dissertation research. Blemishes are what you d expect from that usage and from sitting on a shelf for forty-plus years in a sunless room. All six books are 10-1/2" x 8". Vol. #1: it has a noticeable lean with light bumps at the four corners; gold lettering on front panel is intact, whereas the lettering on the spine is rather worn, though still readable; binding is quite firm. The interior is very fine--the hinges are strong and the end page paper covering them is not damaged in any way. 533 numbered pages. Vol. #2: it has a noticeable lean with light bump at the top front corner; gold lettering on front panel is intact, whereas the lettering on the spine is slightly worn but entirely readable; binding is quite firm. Julia Child; Louisette Bertholle; Simone Beck; Sidonie Coryn [illus.]
Very Good / Very Good. Item #5602 New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1961. First Edition stated on copyright page with note about authors dated August 1961. Quarto. xv, 684pp, +xxxii index. Black and white illustrations throughout. Illustrated dust jacket with original "$10.00" price present. Fleur de lis patterned white cloth-covered boards with red topstain and blue endpapers. The stories of the book and Julia Child are well documented, but less is known of the illustrator, Sidonie Coryn. Coryn was working on fashion design and layout in New York when she was asked to illustrate Mastering the Art, and eventually produced over 450 illustrations for the two volumes. While she never was a foodie (she wanted to be in the studio), her drawings helped a generation of Americans learn to cook, which is all the more remarkable as they were based on black and white photos Paul Child would send her from Norway. Coryn said Julia Child wasn't her buddy, but "she was courteous and had a commanding presence." Asked about seeing the film Julie and Julia when it came out in 2009, she said she didn't intend to, but if someone asked her to go, she would to be polite [Aguilar, Chicago Tribune, September 11, 2009.]Dust jacket is heavily chipped and soiled throughout, but intact and colors are unfaded. Boards are also soiled and spine is faded. Binding is sound, text block is stained and delightfully splattered, and interior is clean and unmarked. A clearly well used copy.
Dahl, Roald
USA Alfred Knopf 1961. A first edition, first printing, second issue [Bound by the Book Press] published by Alfred Knopf in 1961. A very good copy without inscriptions. SIGNED and INSCRIBED on the front free endpaper 'To Andrew and Rebecca [Highton]/Love/Roald Dahl/1977'. Additionally, Dahl has written 'American Edition' on the front pastedown. In a very good unclipped wrapper with surface loss to the spine and corners and general surface wear. Douglas Highton attended St Peter's prep school in Weston-super-Mare with Roald Dahl. As a friend, Douglas supported Roald during an incident at school, which Roald would never forget and later recounted in his autobiographical book 'Boy'. Douglas also appears anecdotally in the short story 'Lucky Break', and as a character in the short story 'The Swan'. The two stayed in touch over the years and Douglas would visit Roald at home in Great Missenden where Roald kindly signed many books for Douglas' grandchildren, Andrew and Rebecca [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; In Dust Jacket]

Simon and Schuster, 1961. Publisher's original blue cloth with white lettering to spine. Some offsetting to endpapers; edges a little rubbed with light marking to lower board and mild toning to edges; '.50' written in red biro at top corner of front endpaper, contents very nice and clean otherwise. The original and unclipped dust jacket seems to have some minor and discreet restoration work to spine head and corners; some instances of rubbing to upper panel; a couple of repaired small tears to top edge and very small blue biro inscription to reverse corner of front flap. A very good copy overall or better. First American edition, first impression (Simon and Schuster, 1961). Jacket design by Paul Bacon. Adapted into a popular TV series in 2019. Heller, Joseph - Catch-22 - Simon & Schuster: New York, 1961 - 1st Edition / 1st Printing - "First Printing" stated on the copyright page as required in order to denote the first printing of the first edition. "There was only one catch and that was Catch-22, which specified that a concern for one's safety in the face of dangers that were real and immediate was the process of a rational mind. Orr was crazy and could be grounded. All he had to do was ask; and as soon as he did, he would no longer be crazy and would have to fly more missions. Orr would be crazy to fly more missions and sane if he didn't, but if he was sane he had to fly them. If he flew them he was crazy and didn't have to; but if he didn't want to he was sane and had to. Yossarian was moved very deeply by the absolute simplicity of this clause of Catch-22..." The book has some light sunning to the spine, scuffs and light general shelf wear. The boards remain straight and clean and the lettering on the spine is still bright. The top stain is a little faded. The binding remains square but is loose with a crack starting between the pages II and III. Internally the text block is very clean with no markings, writings, stains etc. There is a nice bold Joseph Heller signature tipped onto the front end page. All together a very solid example of a notoriously fragile book. Basis for the rather good 1970 adaptation which starred Alan Arkin as Captain Yossarian. Also the basis for the well received 2019 Hulu mini-series adaptation. There is too much to be said for this book, so we will leave it at two simple things: it … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

JULIA CHILD, Simone Beck, and Louisette Bertholle
1961. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition! Very good condition, appears it was never used! Own a piece of history! A must have for any serious cook! Very rare 1st edition, 1st printing of the very famous Julia Child's cook book, Mastering the Art of French Cooking. This was a library pull, but DOES NOT have any library markings. It is in extremely good condition, it appears it was never used! The only issue that keeps it from a "like new" rating, is that the front cover was aged by the sun, but had a smaller book next to it, so you can see the discoloration in my photos. Ships with Priority Mail, Insurance and Signature Confirmation. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Condition: Etat correct.

Marker, Chris
Editions du Seuil, 1961. First edition. 8vo, unpaginated. Illustrated with b/w photographs. With the original printed wraparound band flattened and laid in. The scarce first edition of this artists' book printed from maquettes designed by Marker himself, which combines the spoken portion of several of his early films, matched with stills and found images, and predates the release of La Jetée the following year. The present work is one of the most brilliantly designed books of the early 1960's, and would directly inspire Richard Hollis' design for John Berger's Ways of Seeing a decade later, as Hollis described in a 2006 interview in The Eye: "The influence was Chris Marker's book Commentaires, which has stills set within the text. I was a fan of Marker's films. . . you read you knew exactly what was being talked about. It was a substitute for description: instead of talking about something, you show the objective visual evidence." Later reissued in 1967 with a companion volume in an altered design, and with Marker's design credit removed, this original edition is very scarce in the trade, especially in fine condition and with the band intact. This is a square, uncreased copy, with some minor dustiness to the top edge of the text block, else fine- the nicest example we've seen. [Attributes: First Edition]

[AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] First edition of the French translation of one of the reference works on the Nazi concentration camp system. McCORKELL, Elsie Jane (Elizabeth Hough Sechrist and Janette Woolsey)
Philadelphia: Macrae Smith Company, 1961. Very Good. The original dust jacket cover art and complete set of 56 interior illustrations. The dust jacket cover art consists of one color wash drawing mounted on artists' board with a tissue paper overlay. The 56 interior illustrations include vignettes, half-page, full-page, and double-page drawings: most are mounted on artists' boards measuring between 8" x 10" and 11" x 14" (including some smaller and larger size boards); 6 are not mounted. All have light scattered penciled measurements and production notes in the margins, some of the mounted illustrations are lightly toned, overall very good. Accompanied by a near fine ex-library copy of the book in near fine dust jacket for comparison. Sechrist and Woolsey's classic compendium of Easter themes and stories are magically brought to life by McCorkell's charming and accomplished suite of drawings.
