Pharmacopoea Leodiensis in qua describuntur medicamenta . in tres partes distributa. In prima simplicia omnia. In altera composita Galenica. In tertia chimica remedia.Liège, Everard Kints, 1741. 4to. With title-page in red and black with the woodcut bearing from the coat of arms of the city of Liege, the engraved arms of the dedicatee (the Bishop of Liège) facing the dedication. Contemporary tanned sheepskin, rebacked (gold-tooled spine).

      - Daems & Vandewiele, pp. 169-170 (7 copies); A. Guislain, "A propos de la pharmacopée Liégeoise", Bulletin Cercle Benelux d’Histoire de la Pharmacie XXVII (October 1961), pp. 1-5; UniCat (6 copies); WorldCat (5 copies). Rare first and only early edition of the only pharmacopoeia for the city of Liège in the Austrian Southern Low Countries (now Belgium), largely independent of its predecessors in other cities whether in the Low Countries or elsewhere. Some of the medicinal recipes appear to be local in origin. It may occasionally borrow from the 1727 Dispensatorium pharmaceuticum Austriaco-Viennense, which was officially made mandatory for use in the Austrian Low Countries in 1737, but it copies neither the structure nor the recipes. The text (in Latin, though some of the preliminaries are in French) is divided into three parts: the first provides a classified list of nearly a thousand simples; the second provides recipes for hundreds of compound medicines; and the third provides recipes for about a hundred chemical medicines. Some of the compound medicines are unusually complex. Also unusual are the appendix giving prices of medicines and the list of 87 doctors, pharmacologists and surgeons enrolled in the Liège Collegium Medicinae. With an owner's inscription of the Liège pharmacist H.N. Fraigneux and 4 full pages of 18th and 19th-century manuscript notes in the endpapers. Slight browning and occasional foxing, but otherwise in good condition and with generous margins. The binding is structurally sound with the new parts in good condition and with the old endpapers preserved, except for the front paste-down, which has been replaced. The only Liège pharmacopoeia: an essential source for the medical history of Liège, Maastricht and their surroundings.

Recipient of the Nobel Prize (1913) for literature, Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) was born in an affluent Bengali family. He was a versatile genius and developed an acute sensibility towards various art forms, literature, poetry, dance and music. Tagore's journey as a painter began in his late sixties as an extension to his poetry. Though he had hardly any formal training in art, he developed a highly imaginative and spontaneous visual vocabulary, enhanced by a sound understanding of the visual practices of modern western art and primitivism. His first images emerged from revision marks on his manuscripts that he distorted into animal shapes - slightly crude renderings of fantastical animals. On his birth centenary of in 1961, the Indian government--at the personal initiative of its prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, who had known and revered Tagore in the 1930s commissioned a portfolio of collotype reproductions of some of Tagore's more than 2,000 paintings and drawings. They were printed by the renowned Ganymed Press. So fine was the quality that when the collotype reproductions were exhibited at the Commonwealth Institute in London, some visitors took them for the original works. Tagore said his paintings did not contain "any interpretation of an idea or representation of fact". This might be true for the animal images and the landscapes, but can hardly be said to be true for his studies of veiled women. The Ganymed Press were Collotype printers, in London between 1947 and 1963. The firm owed its origins to Ganymed Graphische Anstalt of Berlin, founded in the early years of the 20th century by Bruno Deja, a printer, and the art historian Julius Meier-Graefe. The Berlin works was re-established after wartime bombing with the help of the British publishing firm Lund Humphries and the New Statesman newspaper; Deja, in turn, advised the London firm set up by Lund Humphries and the New Statesman and provided trained craftsmen. The firm was run by Bernhard Baer (1905-83) and his wife Anne. Baer presented a set of these collotypes to the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1961. A fine set with a couple of spots to the margins on one or two of the collotypes.

Incredible photo of President Kennedy with Ernie Davis!

New York, 1961. 10" x 8". "Glossy black and white photo, 10"" x 8"", depicting Ernie Davis, and President John Kennedy, with two others from the Syracuse Football team. Folds at top right and bottom left corners, otherwise near fine condition.A heartwarming photo taken when JFK met with Ernie Davis when he was awarded the Heisman trophy. Davis had become the first black athlete to be awarded the Heisman Trophy (the highest individual honor in collegiate football) who also won the Walter Camp Memorial Trophy following his 1961 senior-year season at Syracuse University. President John Kennedy had followed Davis' career and requested to meet him while he was in New York to receive the trophy. Kennedy sent a telegram, reading:Seldom has an athlete been more deserving of such a tribute. Your high standards of performance on the field and off the field, reflect the finest qualities of competition, sportsmanship and citizenship. The nation has bestowed upon you its highest awards for your athletic achievements. It's a privilege for me to address you tonight as an outstanding American, and as a worthy example of our youth. I salute you. Both men were perceived as engines of American hope and vigor. It was a monumental period in our history with racial tensions in the forefront.. ""He was the star, but he was black. You're the greatest cat, but you're inferior. On one level, you're the greatest; the other level, you can't eat at a restaurant.""And in incredible irony, both men, in a manner beyond imagination to those who watched them shake hands, would be gone within two years: Davis would die of leukemia, while Kennedy would be shot to death in Dallas. An absolutely precious photo depicting two men whose legacy stood for hope and change."
