        Moviegoer, The

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1961. First Edition, as stated. Hardcover. Fine/Fine-. First Edition (so stated) of the author's first (and finest) novel, one of only some 3,000 copies printed. 8vo: [10],244pp. Publisher's red cloth spine lettered in gilt and decorated in black, slate-gray paper-covered boards decorated in black, top edge stained slate, fore-edge untrimmed; in a First-Issue typographic dust jacket with $3.95 and publication code "0561" on the front flap. A Fine, unread copy, square, tight and unmarked, in a just about Fine dust jacket, with a single shallow chip to spine head and trace of rubbing to the toe. Superb collector's copy. 'What is the nature of the search? you ask. Really it is very simple; at least for a fellow like me. So simple that it is often overlooked. The search is what anyone would undertake if he were not sunk in the everydayness of his own life.' Percy’s novel, his first, is a philosophical quest in which the question marks are worn lightly. Binx Bolling is a New Orleans investment broker who chafes over the difficulty of bringing life into high relief. Mere existence lacks flavor. Movies give him a glimpse of a higher possibility. That and sex with his succession of pretty secretaries. But he longs for a more enduring solution. You marvel at how lightly he addresses his displeasures—Percy’s book is like Sartre’s Nausea without the nausea. But Binx is still a man who always has his despair at the ready, and his story can shift toward the tragic with ease." (Time 100) Percy described it thus: the story of "a young man who had all the advantages of a cultivated old-line southern family: a feel for science and art, a liking for girls, sports cars, and the ordinary things of the culture, but who nevertheless feels himself quite alienated from both worlds, the old South and the new America." Winner of the National Book Award. Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.

“Analyse chimique fondée sur les Observations du Spectre. Premier Mémoire,” in Annales de Chimie et de Physique 3rd Series, Volume 52, 1861

FIRST EDITION and appearance in French of a landmark paper marking “the invention of Spectral Analysis and the announcement of the discovery of two new elements, Cesium and Rubidium [and eventually many more] by using the new method of spectroscopy developed by Kirchhoff and Bunsen. The spectral lines that the two discovered “predicted and demonstrated that new elements, so far missing in the Periodic Table, could be found with the help of spectral analysis. The spectra of the elements would later yield most important information about the structure of the atoms and would help to explain the Periodic Table” (Brandt, The Harvest of a Century, 28). Kirchhoff and Bunsen’s discoveries were heralded as "One of the most dashing advances of the human mind into the secrets of the composition of matter on earth and in cosmos"(Kedrow, Spektralanalyse, 1961). Kirchhoff and Bunsen’s collaboration would change the world, not just of chemical analysis, but also of astronomy and physics. Working with Bunsen at Heidelberg, Kirchhoff made a completely unexpected discovery. It was known at the time that, if held to flame, many chemical substances colored the flame in consistent, characteristic ways. Kirchhoff, without intending to, had identified the cause of the dark lines seen in the solar spectra by Fraunhofer and others. When certain chemicals were heated in Bunsen's burner, characteristic bright lines appeared, i.e., elements in the substance. In some cases these were at exactly the same points in the spectrum as Fraunhofer's dark lines. The bright lines were light coming from a hot gas, whereas the dark lines showed absorption of light in the cooler gas above the Sun's surface. The two scientists found that every chemical element produces a unique spectrum. This provides a sort of "fingerprint" which can confirm the presence of that chemical. Kirchhoff and Bunsen’s worked out the laws of spectroscopy: “(1). An incandescent body gives off light in a continuous spectrum. (2) An excited (heated) body gives off a bright-line spectrum. (3) A vapor of an element absorbs white light in the places of the spectrum (producing dark lines) at the same points where the element heated to incandescence produce bright lines” (Ede, The Chemical Element: A Historical Perspective, 75). CONDITION & DETAILS: Paris: Victor Masson et Fils, 1861. Entire volume. 8vo (9 x 5.5 inches; 225 x 138mm). 512 pp. Kirchhoff & Bunsen paper: 452-486. ILLUSTRATION: 1 double-page folding chromolithographed plate depicting spectrum analysis (the colors remain very bright); another plate shows a spectroscope and 8 spectra, among these the spectra of Cesium. BINDING: Entire volume in blue paper wraps with a chipped label at the spine. The wraps are in excellent condition and the text block is solid and tight. INTERIOR: Complete and uncut. Some light foxing and toning throughout as well as a light (and minor) old damp stain at the margin, otherwise clean throughout.

        A Memoir of Mary Ann

New York: Farrar, Strauss and Cudahy,, 1961. By the Dominican Nuns of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Home, Atlanta, Georgia. Introduction by Flannery O'Connor. Octavo. Original green cloth, titles to spine in black, top edge dyed green. With the dust jacket. Slightly rubbed and faded along edges, spotting and partial toning to endpapers. An excellent copy in the lightly rubbed jacket with faded spine panel and a few short closed tears. First edition, first printing. Signed by O'Connor on the first page of her introduction and inscribed on the front free endpaper by Monsignor Dodwell, who baptised Mary Ann and was involved in her care, "May Mary Ann bless and smile on the Coles who were so good to her, Monsignor Dodwell". Also inscribed by a third hand, "Prayers, Sr. M. David O. P.". O'Connor was contacted by the nuns of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Home in Atlanta after the death of their remarkable patient Mary Ann Long, who had been diagnosed with a terminal cancer on her face as a toddler, but lived to the age of twelve under their care. The nuns wanted to tell Mary Ann's story, and suggested that O'Connor write a novel based on her life. But O'Connor, as she explains in the introduction, thought it better that the nuns write the real story themselves. Loosely inserted is an original photograph of Mary Ann in her first Communion dress, showing the tumour affecting her face. Signed material of any type by O'Connor is rare, particularly so in the last years before her death in 1964. A poignant association given the author's own serious, long-term illness and Roman Catholic faith.

        HIROSHIMA - NAGASAKI DOCUMENT 1961

(TOMATSU, SHOMEI) (DOMON, KEN). Tomatsu, Shomei, Ken Domon, Kiyoshi Sakuma, Nobuo Kusano & Toshio Hata. HIROSHIMA - NAGASAKI DOCUMENT 1961. Tokyo: The Japan Council Against the A and H Bombs, 1961. First Edition. Large Square 4to. Decorative Cloth + Wrappers. Photography Monograph. Good./No Jacket - As Issued.. np + 54pp, profusely illustrated in duotone. Text in English. Designed by Kohei Sugiura. In protective clear acetate dustwrappers. This is Ken Domon and Shomei Tomatsu's remarkable book of photographs reflecting the aftermath of the atomic bombs the US dropped on The Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki to hasten the end World War II. In addition to the gripping hardbound volume of images, it contains a second English language publication in wrappers reprinting scholarly articles by Kiyoshi Sakuma, Nobuo Kusano, Toshio Hata on the radiation and its effects. A serviceable example only of this remarkable Post-War Japanese photographic book lacking the publisher's slipcase, and whose primary volume's off-white exterior is browned along the spine, moderately soiled, and exhibits notable insect damage to the ink of its decorative design of concentric circles. Internally it is bright and sound, with the textblock lightly browned along the edges and pulling ever so slightly at the signatures. The paper text volume shows some overall wear, light browning and soiling to the covers and edges, cracking along the spine, and a small closed tear to the foredge corner of the front cover. It has been priced accordingly.         Thunderball

London: Jonathan Cape. 1961., 1961. First Issue, Binding A, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR. Octavo, pp.254. A very good to near fine copy, in original pictorial dustwrapper. With characteristic ballpoint inscription to flyleaf; To/ Peter Werner/ from/ the Author. Recipient is likely the same Werner who became the prolific American film director- he would have been a teenager at the time of the inscription. This is one of a few titles from the Werner collection that were inscribed by Fleming. 'Thunderball' is one of the most pivotal works of the series. It was in 'Thunderball' that Fleming first introduces the world to the ultimate Bond villian- Ernest Stavro Blofeld. Though Bond and Blofeld never actually meet here, it is in this book that Bond first battles the schemes of SPECTRE, Blofeld's criminal organisation. Is the first part of the so-called 'Blofeld' trilogy, and was followed by 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service' (1963) and 'You Only Live Twice' (1964). The title was filmed in 1965, starring Sean Connery as 007, Claudine Auger as Domino and Adolfo Celi as Emilio Largo- SPECTRE's No.2. The later film 'Never Say Never Again', with Connery again as 007, was loosely based on this story. Gilbert A9a (1.1).
