Washington, D.C, september 8, 1961. 4to. 1 p.; on Supreme Court stationery. Faint horizontal creases; near fine . Justice Black thanks Levy for sending his "Realist Jurisprudence and Prospective Overruling" and offers his brief opinion of the work. Black advises caution in applying Cardozo's "Sunburst Doctrine", which permits prospective overruling: " ... such a rule would, however, mark a considerable break with past practices and therefore it is probably a good thing that there has been considerable caution exercised by judges in this field."

Some foxing to the page edges, otherwise near fine in a very good dust jacket with a small chip to the crown and foot of the spine. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box.For sheer abundance of talent there can hardly be a writer alive who surpasses V.S. Naipaul. Whatever we may want in a novelist is to be found in his books: an almost Conradian gift for tensing a story, a serious involvement with human issues, a supple English prose, a hard-edged wit, a personal vision of things...[He is] the world's writer, a master of language and perception" (The New York Times Book Review). Listed on both Modern Library and Time's 100 great novels of the twentieth century.

Extremely scarce and important Typed Letter Signed

1961. unbound. 2 pages (front and back), 10.25 x 7.25 inches, on personal letterhead, signed twice -- once in full and again on verso with initials, and with a one-line handwritten postscript. No place, March 31, 1961. Written to noted Civil Rights and Constitutional law attorney Howard Meyer, one month before the gala Centennial Celebration of the American Civil War, in small part: "...Very few people can grasp the significance of the triumph of the Confederacy in the years after the Civil War. Be that it may, perhaps our task may currently be to outwit them by making whatever we write simply captivating from an interest point of view. It has been the trick in art for centuries and I am painfully trying to learn it. Your article should help people to feel - 'Now, that's what I thought about the Confederacy all along! - Scoundrels, traitors!' Since most of us can't help feeling that 'reactionaries' are other people - I think that they are genuinely baffled to know that anything which is supposed to be quite as quaint and as gallant as the Confederacy actually based on human slavery - militantly, blatantly so. The leaders of the Confederacy left all the evidence - it is only their modern day apologists who try to insist that that wasn't what the whole thing was about..." Signature partially smudged; otherwise fine condition. African-American playwright best known for her play "A Raisin in the Sun." She died at age 34.

I hear bach that it's quite dry in Camarthen, Caernarvon, Pembroke, Denbigh, Anglesey and Merioneth

1961. Sheet size: 192 × 140 mm. Pen and black ink on wove paper. Stamped on verso for publication in the Daily Mail, 10 November 1961, and with pencil reproduction instructions recto. Comment, in the light of the recent severe weather, upon the polling in Wales under the 1961 Licensing Act on "dry Sundays." Welsh Sunday Polls were finally abolished in 2003. The cartoons and illustrations of Nicolas Bentley (1907-1978) were part of the warp and weft of English popular culture in the 1950s and 60s. Never savage, though often waspishly accurate and exuding an urbane air of amusement at the foibles of his fellows, Bentley's work was familiar to the public from a wide variety of publications. Between 1952 and 1954 he drew regular cartoons for the weekly Time and Tide, and after that for the daily News Chronicle. Between 1958 and 1962 he drew topical cartoons for the Daily Mail under the title "Watch My Line." He also drew many portraits, in black and white line, of famous people, for various papers, including over sixty for the Sunday Telegraph, which began publication in February 1961.

Garden City: Doubleday & Company, Inc., (1961). First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine in a Very Good dustwrapper. SIGNED by the former First Lady on the front endpaper. Roosevelt advises how a teen-age girl can grow to be a gracious lady by recounting her own experiences of overcoming shyness and facing her fears. A few pages in the penultimate chapter have pencil and pen markings with some words crossed out and a few added, apparently in preparation for reading from the chapter. The handwriting does not appear to be Roosevelt's but possibly may be Ferris's. In any case, it's an interesting alteration to an already uncommon book, especially when autographed.

        For the New Intellectual

New York: Random House,, 1961. The philosophy of Ayn Rand. Octavo. Original black boards, titles to spine gilt, author's initials blocked to upper board in blind. With the dust jacket. Production flaw affecting the first 15 leaves, with text block not centred and 4 leaves short at fore-edge, but no text loss (doubtless the reason this copy was used for presentation). Light browning to half-title as usual, spine a little faded in the tanned and lightly nicked dust jacket, a very good copy. First edition, first printing. With the author's signed presentation inscription to the half-title, "To Jean and Herbert Cornuelle - cordially - Ayn Rand February 23 1961." Herbert C. Cornuelle (1920–1996) was a business and community leader in Hawaii and the youngest man to become president of the Dole Company; he was president of the Volker Fund, an endowment that supported the academic careers of both Mises and Hayek, and a good friend of Rand's.
