TOLKIEN, J R R
London Readers Union and George Allen & Unwin Ltd. 1960 1st and only Readers Union Edition. Original RU brown boards with gilt titles to the spine, page sheets and maps supplied by Allen & Unwin from their 9/7/6 Impressions run, ochre tint to the top edge of the text block and original RU dust jackets, with ring and eye vignette to front panel. All unclipped showing price of 12s. The books are all in at least near fine condition (across the set, 4 fore edge corners have a tiny bruise and there is a tiny bump to the top edge of two). All bindings are very firm and square. Across the set, there is one single spot to the fore edge of the text block (on The Fellowship of the Ring). There are no names, inscriptions or bookplates and only light bands of acid migration to the endpapers. The pages are all clean, crisp and fresh and the books appear unread. The dust jackets are in at least near fine condition, having the merest hint of toning, noting a 1.2cm closed tear at the foot of The Two Towers with associated faint creasing. This is a superb condition set of this difficult to find edition. We have additional images on file. The Readers Union published this single impression of each of the three volumes in their own bindings and dust jackets, under a shared imprint with George Allen & Unwin Ltd. It was printed by George Allen & Unwin alongside their 9th Impression of The Fellowship of the Ring, 7th Impression of The Two Towers and 6th Impression of The Return of the King. Only 2,973 sets were supplied to the RU to be sold only to the members of their new club, Contemporary Fict … [Click Below for Full Description]

Synopsis To Kill a Mockingbird is a novel by Harper Lee published in 1960. It was immediately successful, winning the Pulitzer Prize, and has become a classic of modern American literature. The plot and characters are loosely based on the author's observations of her family and neighbors, as well as on an event that occurred near her hometown in 1936, when she was 10 years old. The novel is renowned for its warmth and humor, despite dealing with the serious issuesof rape and racial inequality. The narrator's father, Atticus Finch, has served as a moral hero for many readers and as a model of integrity for lawyers. One critic explains the novel's impact by writing, "In the twentieth century, To Kill a Mockingbird is probably the most widely read book dealing with race in America, and its protagonist, Atticus Finch, the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Roosevelt, Eleanor & Regina Tor
Random House, New York, 1960. First edition. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by both Eleanor Roosevelt and Regina Tor opposite the title page. Light fading to the cloth, near fine in a near fine dust jacket with some toning to the spine. Laid in is a publicity photograph of both authors. This is the first example we have seen signed by Eleanor Roosevelt. Roosevelt and Tor celebrate the role of the UN as both an instrument for preserving peace, and as an agency for improving the health, education and productivity of people around the world. "Although the UN officially came into being at San Francisco in 1945," they write, it "is actually a highly complex international organization which has been built upon a foundation that has been long in the making, a foundation constructed of the long-ancient hopes, and dreams, the slowly accumulated human group knowledge, and the ever-developing conscious reasoning of thousands of ages of man." Written at the height of the Cold War and decolonization movement, the book expresses the vaunting-almost utopian-hopes of activists like Mrs. Roosevelt, who passionately believed in the power of the UN to achieve some form of world government and thereby avert the outbreak of a third world war. Kazantzakis, Nikos; Peter A. Bien
Simon & Schuster, New York, 1960. First American edition of this historical novel, basis for the 1988 Academy nominated film. Octavo, original half cloth. Translated from the original Greek by Peter A. Bien. Signed by the translator as follows, "Never in my life have I feared death as much as I feared that resurrection." Peter Bien Hanover, NH." Fine in a near fine dust jacket. An exceptional inscription. Hailed as a masterpiece by critics worldwide, The Last Temptation of Christ is a monumental reinterpretation of the Gospels that brilliantly fleshes out Christ's Passion. This literary rendering of the life of Jesus Christ has courted controversy since its publication by depicting a Christ far more human than the one seen in the Bible. He is a figure who is gloriously divine but earthy and human, a man like any other--subject to fear, doubt, and pain. "A searing, soaring, shocking novel: (Time). Basis for the 1988 film directed by Martin Scorsese starring Willem Dafoe, Harvey Keitel, Barbara Hershey, Andre Gregory, Harry Dean Stanton and David Bowie.
