25 Stories and Storytelling Flyer (Archive from reading at The Living Theatre on February 1, 1961)

Self published, New York 1960 - Archive of two pieces from one of the New York Underground's most creative and charismatic orators, Spencer Holst. Includes Holst's self-published first book, "25 Stories" (1960), and a flyer from a reading shortly after publication at The Living Theatre in New York on February 1, 1961.Holst was already a well-known and gifted speaker by the time "25 Stories" was published with the help of his wife, abstract expressionist painter Beate Wheeler. He frequently held audiences with his psychedelic and surrealistic tales and would give performances at Judith Malina and Julian Beck's The Living Theatre, selling copies of "25 Stories" at the show. Holst's work continued to fascinate audiences, and "25 Stories" was reprinted in 1993 by Station Hill Press as the better part of a career-spanning collection, "The Zebra Storyteller."Book: tall handbound perfect bound wrappers, 4.5 x 14 inches. Spine ends chipped, cracked front hinge, dampstains and soiling, overall Good plus and still serviceable (surviving copies of this fragile book are scarce in any condition). Flyer: 8 x 12.5 inches. Near Fine, with dust-soiled edges, spine slightly faded, unobtrusive glue stain along two edges of lower paste-down; about Fine jacket, priced 15s, barely toned to spine panel, else quite fresh and bright. Durrell's magnum opus, chronicling the lives of British expatriates in Egyptbetween the two world wars. "The Alexandria Quartet is one of those works that seem to draw upon and sum up a multitude of works and writers and bodies of knowledge that have come before. Sources specific to Egypt include Constantine Cavafy's poetry and E. M. Forster's Alexandria: A History and a Guide. Other sources range from The Arabian Nights to accounts of the life of occult philosopher Paracelsus, from the obsessive erotic catalogues of the Marquis de Sade (who wrote his own Justine and who provides three of the volumes with epigraphs) to the thrillers of John Buchan. Freud is here (providing a psychological framework and yet another epigraph), as well as his student Georg Groddeck. Durrell also utilizes Einstein's theory of relativity, recounting the same events from multiple viewpoints within the first three volumes, then advancing the characters and situations through the fourth dimension, time, in the fourth and final volume. . . . Whatever the merits of the works his contemporaries were producing in the 1950s, most of those seemed cautious and provincial compared to Durrell's unabashedly romantic and experimental novels." (Literary Encyclopedia) N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.

        Light Blue, Dark Blue

Macdonald, London, 1960 First edition, first impression.Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to spine in navy blue. With the dust jacket. An excellent copy in the dust jacket. From the library of Ted Hughes and Sylvia Plath with Plath's inscription to the front free endpaper, "Ted & Sylvia Hughes London 1960". A breath-taking copy of this notable anthology famously printing (besides a poem from Hughes's Hawk in the Rain) the first appearance of Plath's work in a regularly published book. Her privately issued publication A Winter Ship came out later in the year as did her landmark collection, The Colossus. Books inscribed by Plath are deeply uncommon for diverse reasons: her early death of course and also for reasons of physical isolation. The form of the present inscription - her use of the adopted surname combined with her choice to name Ted before Sylvia - seems telling and somehow poignant. We have never seen or even heard of another copy of this book bearing an inscription by Plath. (Provenance - Olwyn Hughes)[148]

        Golf Is My Game

New York: Doubleday & Company, 1960. First edition, early printing of this classic golfing technique manual. Octavo, original half cloth, illustrated with photographs and drawings. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "For Kenneth Hannan with best wishes Bob Jones." The recipient was a member of Augusta National Golf Course and was friend's with Jones. Jones co-designed the Augusta National course with Alister MacKenzie; the new club opened in early 1933 and founded the Masters Tournament, first played at Augusta in March 1934. The new tournament, originally known as the Augusta National Invitational, was an immediate success, and attracted most of the world's top players right from its start. Jones came out of retirement to play, essentially on an exhibition basis, and his presence guaranteed enormous media attention, boosting the new tournament's fame. Light rubbing, near fine in an excellent near fine price-clipped dust jacket with light wear to the extremities. "Jones left an enduring legacy of athletic prowess and exemplary personal characteristics. No one is likely to break his records of 13 U.S. and British national championships, and four in one year (he won the U.S. Open a total of four times, the U.S. Amateur five times, the British Open three times, and the British Amateur one time) The Masters seems to have a secure place in the pantheon of golf; and the name Bobby Jones will continue to represent the highest standards of amateurism, sportsmanship and self-mastery" (ANB).

        The Nightingale: A Romance

Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston 1960 - Dedication copy! The story of Violet Carpenter, a poet living in a small town (some say modelled on Maplewood where the author lived at 46 Claremont Avenue) whose ambition is to have her poetry published. Her housekeeper, on the other hand, has plans to get Violet married to a long time suitor. It becomes an eventful summer. 308 pp. Book has bright orange boards, stated First Printing. Section browned front pastedown & ffep. Book is ever so slightly cocked so that top board edge at corner projects 1/8" over bottom board. Book exhibits no fading, spine ends and corners show hint of edge wear. Book is stiff to open, and except for dedication, is unmarked. Unclipped ($3.95) DJ has edge wear on all extremities, with corners chipped or scuffed, interior is browned, small perforation on right edge of authors b/w portrait (Howard Somers) on rear panel. DEDICATION: "For ____ _____ with my warmest good wishes and all the pleasant memories of our meetings! Agnes Sligh Turnbull" Laid in is newspaper clipping (Maplewood-South Orange News-Record) dated Thursday, October 13, 1960. Headline: 'Township author to autograph her new novel here'. She was scheduled to sign books at Post's Bookstore on Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. I conjecture that the dedication inscription would have taken place on that day. However the cliché ridden imagery and ruthless tactics required by successful press photographers of the period didn’t satisfy his creative mind and, disillusioned, he returned to his home town to set up his own successful photographic business. When war broke out Thurston joined the RAF Photographic Unit and in Italy he acquired a Leica ‘the first camera I can recall handling without a certain feeling of distaste’. After the War he freelanced for newspapers and magazines all over Europe, exploring the new visual world offered by the small format camera. Inspired during the war years by the ‘new breed’ of photographers such as Kurt Hutton, Felix Mann and Leonard McCombe, Thurston finally attained his ambition in 1949 – working exclusively for Picture Post, first in a freelance capacity before becoming a ‘staffer’ in 1951 until the magazine’s demise in 1957,Travelling on assignments in Africa, India, Australia and the Pacific he received two British Press Pictures of the Year awards for his reportage work during this period. Thurston’s photographs are marked by his sensitive and creative approach, creating first class records of the human condition. After following a successful career in advertising in the 1960s he taught and lectured in photography in a number of academic institutions before returning to his first love, painting.         Studies on Phosphoglucomutase.

Cambridge: Fitzwilliam College,, 1960. A dissertation presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Tall quarto. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Typescript, text on the rectos only. 43 pages of plates, of which some are tipped-in and others are full page, also tipped-in as part of the appendix are several offprints and other sources, tables in the text. Spine faded, small spot of dampstain to upper board, some toning to contents and browning of some of the plates, and dampstain affecting the upper edges of the leaves, a very good copy. The doctoral dissertation of Nobel Prize-winning biochemist Cesar Milstein. From the library of his collaborator, Frederick Sanger. Milstein obtained his first PhD in Argentina and in 1958 began his second PhD at Cambridge under the supervision of Malcom Dixon and in collaboration with Fred Sanger. After receiving his degree he briefly returned to Argentina, but the political situation forced him to return to the UK, where he rejoined Sanger's research group at the Laboratory of Molecular Biology of the Medical Research Council. As Milstein has described it, it was Sanger who convinced him to shift his research interests to immunology, in particular the way that immune cells generate antibodies. In 1975 Milstein and his postdoctoral fellow Georges Köhler developed a method for producing monoclonal antibodies, for which they were awarded the 1984 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Monoclonal antibodies can be used to detect and purify any substance for which they can be produced, and they have wide-ranging and revolutionary applications, from simple tests for pregnancy and infection to treating autoimmune diseases and triggering the immune system to attack cancer cells.

        Structural Studies on Bacterial Proteins.

Cambridge: Pembroke College,, 1960. A dissertation presented for examination for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Tall quarto. Original dark blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Typescript, text on the rectos only. 29 plates, some of which are full-page and others tipped-in, also tipped-in is a two-leaf offprint from Nature titled in typescript Appendix I, tables in the text. Some spots and dampstain to cloth, lower corner bumped, dampstain also affecting pastedowns and top edge of portions of contents, some toning and spotting of contents, which are a little curled at the corners, a very good copy. The doctoral dissertation of prominent biochemist Richard Penry Ambler. From the library of his supervisor Frederick Sanger, with a large number of Sanger's pencilled annotations, largely x's to mark specific points, as well as a few small corrections and short notes about the content. Ambler obtained his doctoral degree under Sanger at Cambridge during the late 1950s and early 60s before joining the newly established department of molecular chemistry at the University of Edinburgh. "Ambler's research career was devoted to answering questions concerning the evolution of bacteria with the aid of amino acid sequence information. This led him to perfect protein sequencing techniques and in 1963 he published the first amino acid sequence of a bacterial protein, that of Pseudomonas cytochrome c551" (Scotsman obituary). His most significant work investigated the evolution of antibacterial resistance and cellular structures such as mitochondria (the powerhouse of the cell) and cytochromes (ancient proteins key to cellular energy production). Crucially, Ambler demonstrated that bacteria evolve in two ways, through the normal process of passing on mutations to their progeny, and also "horizontally", by absorbing and incorporating genetic material from other bacteria and organisms in their environment. "Such 'horizontal' gene transfer, he found, occurred with great frequency during the development of antibiotic resistance — a discovery which has proved central to the understanding of what is now recognised as a major public health challenge" (Telegraph obituary).

Photo album]: Al Martin Agency Photo Album of Aerial Acts and Circus Acts during 1956-1958 at the Bradford Hotel in Boston, Massachusetts

Boston, Massachusetts 1960 - Quarto measuring 11.5" x 10". 59pp. Contemporary black binder with a red and yellow "Al Martin Agency" flyer slide into the front cover pocket, with ephemera from the 1920s to the late 1950s. Small tears and chips thus near fine and near fine photographs with some small tears at the corners. A scrapbook filled with different pictures and written articles about aerial performers doing their acts at the Bradford Hotel in Boston, Massachusetts for the Al Martin Agency, during the mid to late 1950s as well as earlier pictures from the 1920s and 1930s of aerial performers and animal acts. Contains 32 gelatin silver sepia toned or black and white photographs measuring between 10" x 8" to 9.5" x 7.5", as well as flyers, printed articles, and typed press releases. The photographs depict different aerial performance groups posed together as well as their performances mid-air. Smiles and looks of excitement can be seen on the faces of the performers even in the photographs of them jumping, swinging, and twirling through the air. Most of the flyers are from the 1950s while the photographs are from the 1920s through to the 1930s which include the larger group photos of the aerial performers. One photograph catches a female performer almost horizontal with the board she's jumped from and another depicts two performers high up in the sky swinging on high-poles. Aside from the traditional acrobatic photos there are a couple of other acts: a man in cannon, Gee Gee Engesser on a sled with her arctic wolves, "The Alaskans," pulling her along, and the Brick Brothers with their monkey, Mr. Murphy. Several of the photographs are Inscribed to Alfred Martin from various people like Jack and Chuck Brick, Marilyn Steele, Gee Gee Engesser, the entire Val Jean Lake Orchestra, and other groups of performers. Several pictures feature animals acts like pigs climbing stairs and sliding down a slide and seals doing tricks for fresh fish. There is also a couple flyers for the Brick Brothers and their "Trampolene(sic) Monkey," Mr. Murphy. Some of the flyers are printed by Al Martin and feature the logo, location of the hotel, a picture of the act, and a small description of the performers. One description reads, "A gorgeous night spectacle as well as daytime thriller, climaxed with fireworks". While the performers pictures are in black and white, the flyer's illustrations are done in single bright colors such as oranges, purples, and blues. The last few pages of the scrapbook are press releases written by Alfred Martin about the different aerial performers. Each is about a page long with a short description of where the performers are from and the type of act they do. The performers written about include *The Rooneys*, *Sensational Ortons*, *Aerial Charltons*, and *The Stardusters*.An interesting look back at the amazing aerial performers and other circus acts that would come to act at the Bradford Hotel in Boston, Massachusetts during the 1920s through to the late 1950s.         THE SOT-WEED FACTOR

Doubleday & Company, Inc., Garden City 1960 - Large octavo, cloth-backed boards. First edition. A satirical epic of the colonization of Maryland based on the life of an actual poet, Ebenezer Cooke, who wrote a poem of the same title. THE SOT-WEED FACTOR is what Northrop Frye called an anatomy -- a large, loosely structured work, with digressions, distractions, stories within stories, and lists (such as a lengthy exchange of insulting terms by two prostitutes). The fictional Ebenezer Cooke (repeatedly described as "poet and virgin") is a Candide-like innocent who sets out to write a heroic epic, becomes disillusioned and ends up writing a biting satire. The novel is set in the 1680s and 1690s in London and on the eastern shore of the colony of Maryland. It tells the story of an English poet named Ebenezer Cooke who is given the title "Poet Laureate of Maryland" by Charles Calvert. He undergoes many adventures on his journey to Maryland and while in Maryland, all the while striving to preserve his innocence (i.e. his virginity). The book takes its title from the grand poem that Cooke composes throughout the story, which was originally intended to sing the praises of Maryland, but ends up being a biting satire based on his disillusioning experiences . In 1994, Barth said retrospectively that this novel marks his discovery of postmodernism: "Looking back, I am inclined to declare grandly that I needed to discover, or to be discovered by, Postmodernism." Boards rubbed along bottom edges, a very good copy in very good dust jacket (designed by Edward Gorey) with two closed tears at bottom edge of rear panel, mild dust soiling to rear panel, and clipped price. Overall, an attractive copy. (#155572) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Studies on Phosphoglucomutase. A dissertation presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.

Cambridge: Fitzwilliam College, 1960 - Tall quarto. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Typescript, text on the rectos only. Spine faded, small spot of dampstain to upper board, some toning to contents and browning of some of the plates, and dampstain affecting the upper edges of the leaves, a very good copy. 43 pages of plates, of which some are tipped-in and others are full page, also tipped-in as part of the appendix are several offprints and other sources, tables in the text. Bedtime for Frances [Inscribed]

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1960. First Edition. Illustrated by Garth Williams (best known for Charlotte's Web) and inscribed by the author, perhaps to the child who inspired the book. First Printing of the first title in Hoban's famed Frances series of six children's books, named by the American Library Association as a Notable Children's Book ("the best of the best") for 1960. Tall, wide 8vo: 16 leaves, including illustrated title page and 18 further illustrations, many full-page. Publisher's black cloth spine, illustrated paper-covered boards, first state dust jacket priced $2.50. Inscribed, signed, and dated by Hoban on front fly leaf: For / Young Fawcett [Frances?] - / An invaluable guide / and pocket companion / containing / complete instructions / for / getting young ladies / into bed / - from / a man of experience // Russ Hoban // 5/22/60. About Fine (several small, shallow nicks to front cover's leading edge, light soiling to back cover), Near Fine, very lightly restored jacket, involving neither lettering nor design (spine panel mildly age-toned, light overall dust soiling, several small closed tears, trivial chip—again, involving neither lettering or design). Copies of Bedtime for Frances in collectible condition are the scarcest in the series. Those in the first state dust jacket, as is our copy, are scarcer still, and copies in the first state dust jacket signed by Hoban are almost unobtainable. At the time of this listing, we can locate no other copies worldwide. "Here is the coziest, most beguiling bedtime story in many a day." (Kirkus Reviews) Hoban's third book, introducing the character of Frances, widely considered a children's classics. In this and other books in the Frances series, Hoban established a trademark, the lively internal monologues of his main character, as she works through such everyday situations as bedtime, a new baby sister, running away, and an unreliable friend. In this first Frances book, the little badger adroitly delays her bedtime with requests for kisses and milk, and concerns over tigers and giants and things going bump in the night. Explaining his inspiration for the book, Hoban recalled, "Our next-door neighbors had a daughter who always found ways of stalling at bedtime. Though I didn’t use any of her specific stalls in the book, this little girl was the reason that Bedtime for Frances came about." Was the book inscribed to that next-door neighbor? It's tempting to think so. N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.

Deeply revealing signed Malcolm X typed letter to Elijah Muhammad

East Elmhurst, New York: , July 13, 1960. East Elmhurst, New York, July 13, 1960. 8.5" x 11". "Malcolm X TLS, as two extensively typed pages, 8.5"" x 11', on tissue stock with red typed highlights. Dated ""July 13, 1960"", just five years before his death, and boldly signed by Malcolm X in blue ink, in addition to including a full four line autographed post script. Signed as ""Bro Malcolm X"", under his typed name of ""As-Salaam-Alaikum"". In impeccable condition. An incredible and eloquent long letter, typed by Malcolm X to his teacher Elijah Muhammad going into extensive detail on his progress in spreading his teachings. While one reads his letter, it becomes readily apparent just how much of a one man 'Force-Majeure' Malcolm X truly was. He was involved in everything, stirring up all elements of the Black movement everywhere in the world, and pulling in assistance from all walks of life. His humble, yet activist, and fully enigmatic writing skills shine in this letter to his teacher, beginning with his first sentence ""I thank ALLAH for the time HE blessed me to be with you last week, and also for the financial help you gave me, which I know you need for yourself. ""And in his metaphoric, philosophical, complimentary and yet inspiring tone, he continues, ""I look upon it as ""seed-corn"", which I do not intend to eat, but to plant, so that when you see it again it will have produced a decidedly large ""increase"".This is a man who was able to instill leadership, inspiration, hope and unity. And yet it was his very ties with his ""teacher"" Elijah Muhammad and the Nation of Islam that ultimately ended his life when in February 1965, he was assassinated by three members of the Nation of Islam after he had grown disillusioned with this group. If he only knew …However, during his years from 1952 to 1964, Malcolm X focused on proselytizing black supremacy, advocated the separation of black and white Americans and rejected the civil rights movement for its emphasis on integration. Malcolm X promoted the Nation's teachings including the specific beliefs:· that black people are the original people of the world· that white people are ""devils""· that blacks are superior to whites, and· that the demise of the white race is imminent. Many whites and some blacks were alarmed by Malcolm X and the statements he made during this period. He and the Nation of Islam were described as hatemongers, black supremacists, racists, violence seekers, segregationists, and a threat to improved race relations. He was accused of being anti-Semitic. One of the goals of the civil rights movement was to end disenfranchisement of African Americans, but the Nation of Islam forbade its members from participating in voting and other aspects of the political process. Civil rights organizations denounced him and the ""Nation"" as irresponsible extremists whose views did not represent African Americans. He called the 1963 March on Washington ""the farce on Washington"", and said he did not know why so many black people were excited about a demonstration ""run by whites in front of a statue of a president who has been dead for a hundred years and who didn't like us when he was alive"".But for all the things Malcolm X represented, he still wielded enormous power. In this letter to Elijah Muhammad he referenced that ""He is off to Philadelphia to show my slides tonight .. Helping to build up caravans in those cities for the trip to New York on the 31st."" … ""I re-established contact with the Nigerian I had met on the plane coming back from Albany. ALLAH really blessed me to thoroughly brainwash several of them and them back to Nigeria loaded down with our literature …"", ""my main purpose in dealing with them is always to establish good diplomatic relations with those in governmental positions, figuring somewhere done the line they may come in handy …"", ""ALLAH blessed me to make friends with (John Patterson, the only so-called Negro on Wall Street and who firm owns Harlem's newest Newspaper), a column titled ""Muhammed has 'em really worried"" attracted much attention … "" Malcolm X even had wheels in motion on forging alliances with Wall Street and the investment firm, writing that ""Mr Patterson wants to know what he can do to help us. He is very impressed by what you have already done … I have approached him not on a religious basis but on an economic basis he understands better … I explained your Future Plan to him, and he said it is in his field to set up the proper machinery (system) to raise funds, finance, or get financial backers for such projects. ALLAH has blessed me to sell him on the idea of meeting with you in person. He's a native New Yorker and understand the cold facts of life. He see the handwriting on the Wall in Africa. He sees the Black Man coming to the top. And he sees you the only one in America with the vision to devise a program that will be in keeping with the pace that is being set now all over the earth by Dark Mankind.""There would be little debate about that Malcolm X certainly knew how to use his skills to create unity, an incredible spiderweb network of supporters, and fully work the system. He was everywhere, not only literally everywhere on the planet, but everywhere socially and economically. Even his concluding sentence ""I must dash off to Philadelphia"" ends with his intense, driven, high energy personality. In an ironic twist, it was this very 'machine' that Malcolm helped to build, which he became disenfranchised with. It was during his pilgrimage to Mecca that Malcolm X had his second epiphany which rocked his beliefs to the core, and set him on an alternate path. Malcolm witnessed what he claims he never saw in the United States: men of all color and nationalities treating each other equally. â€

H.A. Lorentz et la coopération international. The Hague, Martinus Nijhoff, 1928. With a photographic frontispiece portrait of Lorentz, printed from a halftone block. Original publisher's grey printed wrappers.

WorldCat (1 copy); not in Boni, Russ & Laurence, Bibliographical checklist ... Albert Einstein, 1960; for Lorentz: DSB VIII, pp. 487-499. An offprint of an overlooked article by Albert Einstein about his colleague, friend and fellow Nobel Prize laureate in physics, Hendrik Antoon Lorentz (1835-1928) in Leiden, written in French. Einstein wrote it before Lorentz died but added a 10-line postscript noting and commenting on Lorentz's death, which occurred on 4 February. The article originally appeared in Grotius: annuaire international for 1928 and discusses Lorentz's contributions to international reconciliation after World War I. Lorentz's widow gave a copy of the offprint to the British physicist Owen Richardson, perhaps for the occasion of his receipt of the Nobel Prize for physics in 1928, but perhaps due to her own death in 1931 the offprints seem to have hardly been distributed. We found only one copy of the offprint in libraries worldwide. In fine condition. Einstein's appreciation of H.A. Lorentz, overlooked by Einstein bibliographers.

Leather-bound, top edge gilt and limited to 125 signed and numbered copies. Some rubbing to extremities with a minor bump to bottom of front board. An excellent and clean association copy with 'Douglas Cleverdon' Ex Libris label affixed to half title. The book was given to Douglas Cleverdon; a radio producer, bookseller, publisher and author as a 60th birthday present in 1963. Among the books Cleverdon published was Gill's Art and Love and an edition of The Rime of the Ancient Mariner with and introduction and illustrations by David Jones. From 1939 - 1969 he worked for the BBC. During the war he devised The Brains Trust, and as a producer, mainly of radio features on the Third Programme, he commissioned and broadcast poets (including Betjeman), playwrights, composers and writers, giving a first hearing to Flanders and Swann and persuading Dylan Thomas to come up with Under Milk Wood, which Cleverdon produced in 1954 and featured Richard Burton in the role of First Voice. Accompanying the book is a letter from 'Theodore'; possibly a personal friend, although the references in the letter showing familiarity with John Betjeman and Jock Murray (publisher) suggest that it may have been somebody that Cleverdon had worked with previously.
