The First UK Printing published by Heinemann in 1960. The BOOK is in near Fine condition. A light push at the upper end of the spine. A hint of toning and spotting to the text block with the pages remaining clean. Gilt titling remains very bright. Neat, contemporary previous owner's name and date to the upper front blank end paper. The WRAPPER is complete bearing the correct price of 15s net and is in Very Good++ to near Fine condition. A small professionally repaired tear (with Japanese tissue paper to the verso) to the upper front edge adjacent to the spine with a little loss. Light toning to the spine, edges and folds. Minor edge wear at the fold corners. The wrapper is a very bright example and presents well in the removable Brodart archival cover. A sharp copy. 'The Colossus' was the only regularity published work by Plath published under her own name in her lifetime. She had published her later novel of 1963 'The Bell Jar' under the pseudonym of 'Victoria Lucas'. Seamus Heaney said of 'The Colossus' : 'On every page, a poet is serving notice that she has earned her credentials and knows her trade'. The nicest copy we have handled to date.

        Mr. Citizen.

New York: Bernard Geis Associates, 1960 - Octavo. Original brown leather-backed patterned paper boards, titles to spine and front cover gilt on black ground, marbled endpapers, top edge pink. Minor browning to board edges, a couple of faint marks to boards; an excellent copy. Title page in red and black. With 16 plates of black and white photographic reproductions. "Author's" edition, one of 100 copies. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title, "To Hon. Clark Clifford, from his good friend over many years, with kindest regards, Harry S. Truman, Independence, August 27, 1960". The recipient, Clark Clifford (1906–1998), was a hugely influential Democratic advisor, holding the role of Counsel to the President during Truman's time in office. His purview encompassed both domestic and foreign affairs, as well as strategy for the 1948 presidential campaign. Clifford first came to Truman's notice in 1946 when, in his role as Naval Aide to the President, he co-authored the Clifford-Elsey Report. This brought George Kennan's sceptical views of Moscow into the Oval Office, and urged a tough line against Russia. Clifford shaped the central message of Truman's 1948 campaign; attacking the Republican "Do Nothing" Congress, sensing that a more aggressive approach would appeal to voters against Truman's opponent, New York Governor Thomas E. Dewey. Clifford urged Truman to recognise the State of Israel in May 1948, against the objections of the State Department. Clifford left the White House in 1950 to practice law in Washington, however, he remained a trusted advisor to subsequent Democratic presidents, including, when this book was presented in 1960, holding a seat on Kennedy's Committee on the Defense Establishment. In 1968 Clifford was made Secretary of Defence by Lyndon B. Johnson. With Clifford's bookplate to the front pastedown. The first edition of this work was published in 1953; a special edition of 1,000 numbered and signed copies were produced in 1960. This "Author's" edition was issued for presentation by Truman to his closest friends and associates. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

London: Secker & Warburg, (1960). London: Secker & Warburg. (1960). First. First English edition. Fine in just about fine dustwrapper with very slight toning on the spine, and with a long blurb by Dorothy Parker. Perhaps the author's most important novel, later dramatized by Edward Albee. Inscribed by the author to American composer Virgil Thomson: "For Virgil Thomson, with sincere wishes from James Purdy." Purdy's novel Out with the Stars (1992) features a central character, Abner Blossom, based upon and inspired by Virgil Thomson. In an autobiographical essay, Purdy stated that his book Eustace Chisholm and the Works "won the strong admiration of the noted composer Virgil Thomson, who had been following my career from the beginning and who was a special admirer of my novel The Nephew." .

England 1960 - Two photo albums, both are oblong quartos. The first is a string-tied green pebbled cloth measuring 9" x 13" with "Photographs" stamped on the front board; the second is string-tied green cloth measuring 9.5" x 8" with "Photographs" stamped on the front board. In total, a collection of 60 black and white photos measuring between 3" x 5" and 8" x 10" affixed to stiff black paper with some captions. Both albums are very good or better with some tears and rubbing with near fine photographs. Two photo albums collected by S.H. Simpson of steam driven machines. The first of the albums contains photos of equipment built by Holland & Sons Company out of Leicestershire, England featuring railroad engines as well as circus and carnival entertainment constructions run by steam. Pictured here are "the late Arthur Holland's two engines," including "Victory" built in 1917; a traction engine in Leicester; and an engine named "Challenger." There are also numerous carnival rides shown here from the 1920s including Holland's "Jack and Jill" at the Nottingham Goose Fair in 1925 and Holland's "Golden Ride" and "Challenger" merry-go-round with "golden electric jumping horses." The album also features some of the first moveable steam-powered circus rides for traveling troupes. The second album contains images of steam engine outdoor shows around 1959-1960. At these fairs enthusiasts show off steam powered engines, rides, and even a circus organ. One photo shows the Woburn Abbey Rally on August 1, 1960 with the Duke of Bedford and J. Crawley demonstrating the rebuilt Bedford Steam Engine. An interesting archive of steam powered technology and its use both in transportation and entertainment. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        TYPOGRAPHICA (NEW SERIES) 1-16 issues

Complete set of 16 issues in the New Series. Quarto (28cm) Original softcovers with dust jackets, profusely illustrated, in pristine condition, now protected by plastic sleeves. Note : Issue 12 has some minor water damage, no discolouration, but paper a little brittle and wavy. The British publication, Typographica, remains one of the most eclectic design publications ever produced and is obsessively collected by aficionados of design and art. This impeccable, complete set of the New Series is a remarkable artefact of the 60's and a testament to Herbert Spencer's visionary approach to design. Contributions from artists including : Diter Rot, Alexander Rodchenko, Herbert Bayer, John Heartfield, Kurt Schwitters and such varied articles as, Road Signs in Holland, Penguins on the March (examination of Penguin Paperback design), Sex and Typography, Tombstone Lettering on Slate, etc. "Herbert Spencer's Typographica magazine fused new typography and graphic design, avant-garde art, printing history, accounts of the Modernist pioneers and environmental photography to create one of the most remarkable journals ever to emerge from British cultural publishing. Typographica was unusual not only for the consistency of its editorial vision but for its longevity - it was published in London in two series of sixteen issues each, from 1949 to 1967 - especially since the magazine made, and was expected to make, no profit for its gentlemanly owners" - Rick Poynor "Equally at home publishing one of the first articles in Britain about concrete poetry (then an international phenomenon), or an illustrated study of the design challenges presented by Braille, he was a new kind of designer-editor, able to think both visually and verbally, and to fuse images and words in meaningful new relationships" - Rick Poynor : The Guardian, 2002, Spencer's Obituary.

The Common Law Tradition: Deciding Appeals. (Presentation copy, inscribed by Llewellyn to Ben Kaplan.)

Boston & Toronto: Little, Brown, 1960. - Presentation copy, inscribed: 'For Ben [Kaplan]-/this effort to bring the true art of/reading a case down from the icing/into the middle layer of the cake-/with affection and admiration/Karl'. Presentation copies of this uncommon book stand to be especially uncommon, as Llewellyn died only two years after its publication. Karl N. Llewellyn's classic [is] The Common Law Tradition: Deciding Appeals. Llewellyn was, of course, the premier commercial law scholar of the modern era as shown by his selection by the American Law Institute and the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws as the chief reporter for the momentous Uniform Commercial Code project. He has also been regarded as the leader of the American Legal Realist Movement. The Common Law Tradition was written in 1960, less than two years before his death, and was his last major work, representing his final thinking on the judicial process. There is a certain irony in the reasons Llewellyn gave for writing The Common Law Tradition, and in some of his conclusions. More contemporary legal scholars would consider Legal Realism's primary teaching to be that our appellate decision process is nothing more than subjective indeterminancy. 'Legal Realism produced the insight that case analysis cannot generate objective answers to legal problems.' Llewellyn, however, stated that his purpose in writing The Common Law Tradition was to dispel a 'crisis in confidence' of the Bar in our appellate courts and the cynical view that appellate judges' decisions represent little more than naked will, later merely rationalized in the writing of the opinion. The Common Law Tradition was based upon Llewellyn's study of literally hundreds upon hundreds of high state court decisions handed down over some three decades' (Howard Levine, 'Deciding Cases in 'The Common Law Tradition': A Productive And Innovative Year For The Court Of Appeals In Business And Commercial Litigation'; SYRACUSE L. REV. 355, 362 (1998)). [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Original Photograph Of John Fitzgerald Kennedy And Frank Longo Circa 1959 /1960

Los Angeles Circa 1959 / 1960 - Original Photograph 9 1/2" X 7 1/2" Of Jfk At A Restaurant Or Night Club With Frank Longo [ Founder Of Longo Toyota, Which Became The Largest Auto Dealership In The World], Circa 1959/1960. This Is A Much Thinner Kennedy Than We Are Used To Seeing. Kennedy And Longo Are At A Small Cocktail Or Dinner Table, Perhaps At A Banquet Or Night Club. Inscribed, Signed And Dated 6-1-1962 As By Jfk & Gjc (?), But This Is Not Kennedy's Usual Signature, And An Authoritative Source Confirms That Kennedy Was Never This Thin After He Was President, So The Photograph Itself Probably Dates From His California Campaign Circa 1959 / 1960. The Kennedy Archives Have No Record Of The Photograph Being Sent In For A Signature Around That Date. It Was Probably Signed By "Gjc" For The President. The Photo Is From Personal Collection Of A Longo Family Member. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]
