Deeply revealing signed Malcolm X typed letter to Elijah Muhammad

East Elmhurst, New York, July 13, 1960. 8.5" x 11". "Malcolm X TLS, as two extensively typed pages, 8.5"" x 11', on tissue stock with red typed highlights. Dated ""July 13, 1960"", just five years before his death, and boldly signed by Malcolm X in blue ink, in addition to including a full four line autographed post script. Signed as ""Bro Malcolm X"", under his typed name of ""As-Salaam-Alaikum"". In impeccable condition. An incredible and eloquent long letter, typed by Malcolm X to his teacher Elijah Muhammad going into extensive detail on his progress in spreading his teachings. While one reads his letter, it becomes readily apparent just how much of a one man 'Force-Majeure' Malcolm X truly was. He was involved in everything, stirring up all elements of the Black movement everywhere in the world, and pulling in assistance from all walks of life. His humble, yet activist, and fully enigmatic writing skills shine in this letter to his teacher, beginning with his first sentence ""I thank ALLAH for the time HE blessed me to be with you last week, and also for the financial help you gave me, which I know you need for yourself. ""And in his metaphoric, philosophical, complimentary and yet inspiring tone, he continues, ""I look upon it as ""seed-corn"", which I do not intend to eat, but to plant, so that when you see it again it will have produced a decidedly large ""increase"".This is a man who was able to instill leadership, inspiration, hope and unity. And yet it was his very ties with his ""teacher"" Elijah Muhammad and the Nation of Islam that ultimately ended his life when in February 1965, he was assassinated by three members of the Nation of Islam after he had grown disillusioned with this group. If he only knew ...However, during his years from 1952 to 1964, Malcolm X focused on proselytizing black supremacy, advocated the separation of black and white Americans and rejected the civil rights movement for its emphasis on integration. Malcolm X promoted the Nation's teachings including the specific beliefs:· that black people are the original people of the world· that white people are ""devils""· that blacks are superior to whites, and· that the demise of the white race is imminent. Many whites and some blacks were alarmed by Malcolm X and the statements he made during this period. He and the Nation of Islam were described as hatemongers, black supremacists, racists, violence seekers, segregationists, and a threat to improved race relations. He was accused of being anti-Semitic. One of the goals of the civil rights movement was to end disenfranchisement of African Americans, but the Nation of Islam forbade its members from participating in voting and other aspects of the political process. Civil rights organizations denounced him and the ""Nation"" as irresponsible extremists whose views did not represent African Americans. He called the 1963 March on Washington ""the farce on Washington"", and said he did not know why so many black people were excited about a demonstration ""run by whites in front of a statue of a president who has been dead for a hundred years and who didn't like us when he was alive"".But for all the things Malcolm X represented, he still wielded enormous power. In this letter to Elijah Muhammad he referenced that ""He is off to Philadelphia to show my slides tonight .. Helping to build up caravans in those cities for the trip to New York on the 31st."" ... ""I re-established contact with the Nigerian I had met on the plane coming back from Albany. ALLAH really blessed me to thoroughly brainwash several of them and them back to Nigeria loaded down with our literature ..."", ""my main purpose in dealing with them is always to establish good diplomatic relations with those in governmental positions, figuring somewhere done the line they may come in handy ..."", ""ALLAH blessed me to make friends with (John Patterson, the only so-called Negro on Wall Street and who firm owns Harlem's newest Newspaper), a column titled ""Muhammed has 'em really worried"" attracted much attention ... "" Malcolm X even had wheels in motion on forging alliances with Wall Street and the investment firm, writing that ""Mr Patterson wants to know what he can do to help us. He is very impressed by what you have already done ... I have approached him not on a religious basis but on an economic basis he understands better ... I explained your Future Plan to him, and he said it is in his field to set up the proper machinery (system) to raise funds, finance, or get financial backers for such projects. ALLAH has blessed me to sell him on the idea of meeting with you in person. He's a native New Yorker and understand the cold facts of life. He see the handwriting on the Wall in Africa. He sees the Black Man coming to the top. And he sees you the only one in America with the vision to devise a program that will be in keeping with the pace that is being set now all over the earth by Dark Mankind.""There would be little debate about that Malcolm X certainly knew how to use his skills to create unity, an incredible spiderweb network of supporters, and fully work the system. He was everywhere, not only literally everywhere on the planet, but everywhere socially and economically. Even his concluding sentence ""I must dash off to Philadelphia"" ends with his intense, driven, high energy personality. In an ironic twist, it was this very 'machine' that Malcolm helped to build, which he became disenfranchised with. It was during his pilgrimage to Mecca that Malcolm X had his second epiphany which rocked his beliefs to the core, and set him on an alternate path. Malcolm witnessed what he claims he never saw in the United States: men of all color and nationalities treating each other equally. "Throngs of people, obviously Muslims from everywhere, bound for the pilgrimage," he'd begun to notice at the airport terminal before boarding the plane for Cairo in Frankfurt, "were hugging and embracing. They were of all complexions, the whole atmosphere was of warmth and friendliness. The feeling hit me that there really wasn't any color problem here. The effect was as though I had just stepped out of a prison." To enter the state of ihram required of all pilgrims heading for Mecca, Malcolm abandoned his trademark black suit and dark tie for the two-piece white garment pilgrims must drape over their upper and lower bodies. "Every one of the thousands at the airport, about to leave for Jedda, was dressed this way," Malcolm wrote. "You could be a king or a peasant and no one would know." That, of course, is the point of ihram. As Islam interprets it, it reflects the equality of man before God.He entered Mecca in 1964 as ""Malcolm X"", but he left Mecca as ""El Hajj Malik El-Shabazz"", when he became an orthodox Muslim, adopted the Muslim name and distanced himself from the teachings of the black Muslims. This was the moment he sealed his fate as his previous followers, and ""The Nation of Islam"" assassinated him in 1965, when his new path and preachings were in direct conflict with their beliefs. Most of the energy of his adult life was invested in the pursuit of black supremacy, and in one short moment, he made a complete 180 degree turn and the last year of his life was spent in embracing unification, and co-existence. In 1965 Life Magazine published a legacy article on the life and death of Malcolm X, within which they quoted him shortly before his assassination (and in perhaps his last epiphany) as having said ""I did many things as a Muslim that I am sorry for now. I was a zombie back then - like all Muslims - I was hypnotized, pointed in a certain direction and told to march. Well I guess a man's entitled to make a fool of himself if he's ready to pay the cost. It cost me 12 years""This phenomenal, revealing, lengthy letter typed and signed by Malcolm X shows his true brilliance during ""those very 12 years"" of his life."

Structural Studies on Bacterial Proteins. A dissertation presented for examination for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.

Cambridge: Pembroke College, 1960 - Tall quarto. Original dark blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Typescript, text on the rectos only. Some spots and dampstain to cloth, lower corner bumped, dampstain also affecting pastedowns and top edge of portions of contents, some toning and spotting of contents, which are a little curled at the corners, a very good copy. 29 plates, some of which are full-page and others tipped-in, also tipped-in is a two-leaf offprint from Nature titled in typescript Appendix I, tables in the text. The doctoral dissertation of prominent biochemist Richard Penry Ambler. From the library of his supervisor Frederick Sanger, with a large number of Sanger's pencilled annotations, largely x's to mark specific points, as well as a few small corrections and short notes about the content. Ambler obtained his doctoral degree under Sanger at Cambridge during the late 1950s and early 60s before joining the newly established department of molecular chemistry at the University of Edinburgh. "Ambler's research career was devoted to answering questions concerning the evolution of bacteria with the aid of amino acid sequence information. This led him to perfect protein sequencing techniques and in 1963 he published the first amino acid sequence of a bacterial protein, that of Pseudomonas cytochrome c551" (Scotsman obituary). His most significant work investigated the evolution of antibacterial resistance and cellular structures such as mitochondria (the powerhouse of the cell) and cytochromes (ancient proteins key to cellular energy production). Crucially, Ambler demonstrated that bacteria evolve in two ways, through the normal process of passing on mutations to their progeny, and also "horizontally", by absorbing and incorporating genetic material from other bacteria and organisms in their environment. "Such 'horizontal' gene transfer, he found, occurred with great frequency during the development of antibiotic resistance — a discovery which has proved central to the understanding of what is now recognised as a major public health challenge" (Telegraph obituary).         Report On Project In Understanding New Media

No Place: National Association of Educational Broadcasters, 1960. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Subtitled "A Report To The United States Office Of Education From The National Association of Educational Broadcasters". Document produced by McLuhan as a result of a grant from the National Defense Education Act. Its purpose was to develop a syllabus for 11th graders in media awareness and the basic laws concerning sensory effects of various media. Not surprisingly the document was too advanced for high school students, but it served as a springboard for many of McLuhan's greatest themes which were published in The Gutenberg Galaxy and Understanding Media later in the decade. This document, well over two hundred pages in length, has been bound in a contemporary binding. A few inked margin notes in an unknown hand, else a fine copy. Scarce and important media document.

MILÙ, eigentlich Maria de Lurdes de Almeida Lemos, (* 24. April 1926 in Lissabon, Portugal; ? 5. November 2008 in Cascais, Portugal) war eine portugiesische Schauspielerin und Sängerin original signiertes Foto gewidmet original autographed photo dedicated

1960. 11,7 X 16 cm tadelloser ZustandMilú, eigentlich Maria de Lurdes de Almeida Lemos, (* 24. April 1926 in Lissabon, Portugal; ? 5. November 2008 starb. (Quelle: Wikipedia) Lager 1 Autogramm, Autographe, Autograph signiert signed signature unterschrift

H.A. Lorentz et la coopération international. The Hague, Martinus Nijhoff, 1928. With a photographic frontispiece portrait of Lorentz, printed from a halftone block. Original publisher's grey printed wrappers.

WorldCat (1 copy); not in Boni, Russ & Laurence, Bibliographical checklist ... Albert Einstein, 1960; for Lorentz: DSB VIII, pp. 487-499. An offprint of an overlooked article by Albert Einstein about his colleague, friend and fellow Nobel Prize laureate in physics, Hendrik Antoon Lorentz (1835-1928) in Leiden, written in French. Einstein wrote it before Lorentz died but added a 10-line postscript noting and commenting on Lorentz's death, which occurred on 4 February. The article originally appeared in Grotius: annuaire international for 1928 and discusses Lorentz's contributions to international reconciliation after World War I. Lorentz's widow gave a copy of the offprint to the British physicist Owen Richardson, perhaps for the occasion of his receipt of the Nobel Prize for physics in 1928, but perhaps due to her own death in 1931 the offprints seem to have hardly been distributed. We found only one copy of the offprint in libraries worldwide. In fine condition. Einstein's appreciation of H.A. Lorentz, overlooked by Einstein bibliographers.

        Bedtime for Frances [Inscribed]

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1960. First Edition. Illustrated by Garth Williams (best known for Charlotte's Web) and inscribed by the author, perhaps to the child who inspired the book. First Printing of the first title in Hoban's famed Frances series of six children's books, named by the American Library Association as a Notable Children's Book ("the best of the best") for 1960. Tall, wide 8vo: 16 leaves, including illustrated title page and 18 further illustrations, many full-page. Publisher's black cloth spine, illustrated paper-covered boards, first state dust jacket priced $2.50. Inscribed, signed, and dated by Hoban on front fly leaf: For / Young Fawcett [Frances?] - / An invaluable guide / and pocket companion / containing / complete instructions / for / getting young ladies / into bed / - from / a man of experience // Russ Hoban // 5/22/60. About Fine (several small, shallow nicks to front cover's leading edge, light soiling to back cover), Near Fine, very lightly restored jacket, involving neither lettering nor design (spine panel mildly age-toned, light overall dust soiling, several small closed tears, trivial chip—again, involving neither lettering or design). Copies of Bedtime for Frances in collectible condition are the scarcest in the series. Those in the first state dust jacket, as is our copy, are scarcer still, and copies in the first state dust jacket signed by Hoban are almost unobtainable. At the time of this listing, we can locate no other copies worldwide. "Here is the coziest, most beguiling bedtime story in many a day." (Kirkus Reviews) Hoban's third book, introducing the character of Frances, widely considered a children's classics. In this and other books in the Frances series, Hoban established a trademark, the lively internal monologues of his main character, as she works through such everyday situations as bedtime, a new baby sister, running away, and an unreliable friend. In this first Frances book, the little badger adroitly delays her bedtime with requests for kisses and milk, and concerns over tigers and giants and things going bump in the night. Explaining his inspiration for the book, Hoban recalled, "Our next-door neighbors had a daughter who always found ways of stalling at bedtime. Though I didn't use any of her specific stalls in the book, this little girl was the reason that Bedtime for Frances came about." Was the book inscribed to that next-door neighbor? It's tempting to think so. N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.

        Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus

London: Routledge & Kegan Paul, 1960. 1st Edition. Dark Blue Cloth. Fine/Good. Original translation. 5th or later Printing 207 Pp + Publisher's Catalog At Rear, Dated 1959. 1960 Reprint, The Eighth Impression Of The Book First Published 1922, With A Few Corrections In 1933. This Example With The Translation Uniquely Corrected In Pencil Throughout By A Rhodes Scholar Circa 1963-4. The Translation Corrects Obvious, Clear Abscombe's Mistranslations And Omissions To Such A Degree That It Constitutes A New, Corrected Translation. The Translator, William Zaltonoga, A Champion Oxford Boxer While A Rhodes Scholar, Appears To Understand That Wittgenstein Is Discussing How One Thinks About Objects Of One's Own Private Thoughts. Wittgenstein May Be Seen To Make Highly Pointed Conversational Observations Which Tear The Structure Of Consensual Academic Philosophical Thought With Jab After Jab, Demolishing Conventions, Not By Creating A Complete Philosophy But By Identifying How One May Think More Exactly On Matters Of Philosophy And Science And Mathematics, More Exactly Than Historical Consensus Demands, And, By Implication, Showing How Basic Concepts In The Mind Of The Reader Are Woefully Undeveloped If Not Juvenile. The Text In This Translation Makes Such Pointed Observations That It Questions The Basic Intellectual Background And Abilities Of The Intended Audience- Future Educators, Civil Service Managers And Political Policy Makers Educated At Elite Institutions. It Is Understandable How Academics Had Not Previously Bothered With A More Correct Translation, As The Book Is Virtually Unteachable Beyond The Text Itself, Unless One's Teacher Is Smarter Than Wittgenstein, Who Wrote It For The Students. An Important Addition To The Wittgenstein Canon, Both For Identifying The Inexplicable Inadequacies Or Intentional Dumbing-Down By His Translators, And For The Exactness Of The New Translation Offered Printed Here But Entirely Redone By Pears And Mcguiness, Perhaps Not As Well Done As Here By Zaltonaga. [For Another Good Example Of A Post-World War I Mistranslation, Also Somewhat Political, But In This Instance Translation From The Russian, Compare Any English Translation Of Zamyatin's "We" To The 1991 First Translation Into English By A Native Russian Speaker, Raduga Publishers, Moscow, 1991, Where The One Is Almost Unrecognizable From The Other, As Literature. ]
