        Mr. Citizen.

New York: Bernard Geis Associates,, 1960. Octavo. Original brown leather-backed patterned paper boards, titles to spine and front cover gilt on black ground, marbled endpapers, top edge pink. Title page in red and black. With 16 plates of black and white photographic reproductions. Minor browning to board edges, a couple of faint marks to boards; an excellent copy. Author's" edition, one of 100 copies. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title, "To Hon. Clark Clifford, from his good friend over many years, with kindest regards, Harry S. Truman, Independence, August 27, 1960". The recipient, Clark Clifford (1906–1998), was a hugely influential Democratic advisor, holding the role of Counsel to the President during Truman's time in office. His purview encompassed both domestic and foreign affairs, as well as strategy for the 1948 presidential campaign. Clifford first came to Truman's notice in 1946 when, in his role as Naval Aide to the President, he co-authored the Clifford-Elsey Report. This brought George Kennan's sceptical views of Moscow into the Oval Office, and urged a tough line against Russia. Clifford shaped the central message of Truman's 1948 campaign; attacking the Republican "Do Nothing" Congress, sensing that a more aggressive approach would appeal to voters against Truman's opponent, New York Governor Thomas E. Dewey. Clifford urged Truman to recognise the State of Israel in May 1948, against the objections of the State Department. Clifford left the White House in 1950 to practice law in Washington, however, he remained a trusted advisor to subsequent Democratic presidents, including, when this book was presented in 1960, holding a seat on Kennedy's Committee on the Defense Establishment. In 1968 Clifford was made Secretary of Defence by Lyndon B. Johnson. With Clifford's bookplate to the front pastedown. The first edition of this work was published in 1953; a special edition of 1,000 numbered and signed copies were produced in 1960. This "Author's" edition was issued for presentation by Truman to his closest friends and associates.

[Photo album]: Al Martin Agency Photo Album of Aerial Acts and Circus Acts during 1956-1958 at the Bradford Hotel in Boston, Massachusetts

Boston, Massachusetts, 1960. Near Fine. Quarto measuring 11.5" x 10". 59pp. Contemporary black binder with a red and yellow "Al Martin Agency" flyer slide into the front cover pocket, with ephemera from the 1920s to the late 1950s. Small tears and chips thus near fine and near fine photographs with some small tears at the corners. A scrapbook filled with different pictures and written articles about aerial performers doing their acts at the Bradford Hotel in Boston, Massachusetts for the Al Martin Agency, during the mid to late 1950s as well as earlier pictures from the 1920s and 1930s of aerial performers and animal acts. Contains 32 gelatin silver sepia toned or black and white photographs measuring between 10" x 8" to 9.5" x 7.5", as well as flyers, printed articles, and typed press releases. The photographs depict different aerial performance groups posed together as well as their performances mid-air. Smiles and looks of excitement can be seen on the faces of the performers even in the photographs of them jumping, swinging, and twirling through the air. Most of the flyers are from the 1950s while the photographs are from the 1920s through to the 1930s which include the larger group photos of the aerial performers. One photograph catches a female performer almost horizontal with the board she's jumped from and another depicts two performers high up in the sky swinging on high-poles. Aside from the traditional acrobatic photos there are a couple of other acts: a man in cannon, Gee Gee Engesser on a sled with her arctic wolves, "The Alaskans," pulling her along, and the Brick Brothers with their monkey, Mr. Murphy. Several of the photographs are Inscribed to Alfred Martin from various people like Jack and Chuck Brick, Marilyn Steele, Gee Gee Engesser, the entire Val Jean Lake Orchestra, and other groups of performers. Several pictures feature animals acts like pigs climbing stairs and sliding down a slide and seals doing tricks for fresh fish. There is also a couple flyers for the Brick Brothers and their "Trampolene(sic) Monkey," Mr. Murphy. Some of the flyers are printed by Al Martin and feature the logo, location of the hotel, a picture of the act, and a small description of the performers. One description reads, "A gorgeous night spectacle as well as daytime thriller, climaxed with fireworks". While the performers pictures are in black and white, the flyer's illustrations are done in single bright colors such as oranges, purples, and blues. The last few pages of the scrapbook are press releases written by Alfred Martin about the different aerial performers. Each is about a page long with a short description of where the performers are from and the type of act they do. The performers written about include The Rooneys, Sensational Ortons, Aerial Charltons, and The Stardusters. An interesting look back at the amazing aerial performers and other circus acts that would come to act at the Bradford Hotel in Boston, Massachusetts during the 1920s through to the late 1950s.

Rabbit Run, Rabbit Redux, Rabbit Is Rich, Rabbit at Rest (SIGNED tetralogy) Rabbit Angstrom Tetralogy

New York: Alfred A. Knoph Rabbit Angstrom Tetralogy by John Updike (SIGNED First Editions)1. Rabbit, Run (1960) is the book that established John Updike as one of the major American novelists of his--or any other--generation. Its hero is Harry "Rabbit" Angstrom, a onetime high-school basketball star who on an impulse deserts his wife and son. He is twenty-six years old, a man-child caught in a struggle between instinct and thought, self and society, sexual gratification and family duty--even, in a sense, human hard-heartedness and divine Grace. Though his flight from home traces a zigzag of evasion, he holds to the faith that he is on the right path, an invisible line toward his own salvation as straight as a ruler's edge.2. Rabbit Redux (1971): In this sequel to Rabbit, Run, John Updike resumes the spiritual quest of his anxious Everyman, Harry "Rabbit" Angstrom. Ten years have passed; the impulsive former athlete has become a paunchy thirty-six-year-old conservative, and Eisenhower's becalmed America has become 1969's lurid turmoil of technology, fantasy, drugs, and violence. Rabbit is abandoned by his family, his home invaded by a runaway and a radical, his past reduced to a ruined inner landscape; still he clings to semblances of decency and responsibility, and yearns to belong and to believe.3. Rabbit Is Rich (1981): Ten years after Rabbit Redux, Harry Angstrom has come to enjoy prosperity as the Chief Sales Representative of Springer Motors. The rest of the world may be falling to pieces, but Harry's doing all right. That is, until his son returns from the West, and the image of an old love pays a visit to his lot... [Winner of the 1982 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.]4. Rabbit at Rest (1990): In John Updike's fourth and final novel about ex-basketball player Harry "Rabbit" Angstrom, the hero has acquired heart trouble, a Florida condo, and a second grandchild. His son and daughter-in-law are acting erratically, his wife Janice wants to work, and Rabbit is searching his soul, looking for reasons to live. [Winner of the 1991 Pulitzer Price for Fiction]A complete set of the iconic Harry 'Rabbit ' Angstrom titles. All four books are true first US edition, first printings published by Knopf in New York. The Rabbit Run title has all 1st printing issue points. All titles are directly SIGNED by John Updike, and all books are in fine condition with fine dust jacket with the exception of Rabbit, Run - which for the most part is in very good condition with minor wear near the spine - if you're seeking additional pictures or information regarding this priceless tetralogy, please send me a message and I will try to answer your questions to the best of my knowledge. Additionally, all four books have archival dust jacket covers. This set alone goes for over $4500.-----------------John Hoyer Updike was an American writer. Updike's most famous work is his Rabbit series (Rabbit, Run; Rabbit Redux; Rabbit Is Rich; Rabbit At Rest; and Rabbit Remembered). Rabbit is Rich and Rabbit at Rest both won Pulitzer Prizes for Updike. Describing his subject as "the American small town, Protestant middle class," Updike is well known for his careful craftsmanship and prolific writing, having published 22 novels and more than a dozen short story collections as well as poetry, literary criticism and children's books. Hundreds of his stories, reviews, and poems have appeared in The New Yorker since the 1950s. His works often explore sex, faith, and death, and their inter-relationships. He died of lung cancer at age 76.

'Thulathia' means 'a cello unification of three into one', i. e., 'a trio in one'. Grape clusters of the vine connect the energy.         Photo Album]: 1960s Discotheque Dancer Photo Album

New York 1960 - Oblong quarto. Brown leather over paper boards with "Photographs" embossed on the front board. A collection of 132 black and white or color photographs affixed to stiff black paper as well as newspaper clippings and some postcards. Various sizes with most being 3.5" x 3.5". Boards are good only with tape replacing the spine, chips, tears, and a few present but detached pages, overall very good. The assemblage contains photographs and ephemera related to the dancing career of Joyce Pickens. Originally from New York, Pickens traveled the United States and Canada performing at clubs and supplementing her income by staying on in some cities to teach the newest dance crazes to hip citizens. In an offprint of an article from a May 1964 Toronto Daily is a discussion of how the Discotheque trend had arrived from Paris and Pickens had stayed on to teach the dances, dubbing her "Toronto's original discotheque girl." They quote her as saying, "We're headed into another era like the 'roaring twenties.' When the big bands died, people gave up going out to dance, except at private parties. Now with the discotheque, they can have all the variety and sounds they want. everything, at the flick of a turntable switch." The photos show Pickens posing in a variety of costumes, as a cowgirl, a flamenco dress, even a bikini, and in numerous clubs and venues including California's Moulin Rouge Club. Also tipped in are business cards for some of the backing bands that she danced with such as Alfredito and his Mambo Orchestra, Barry Del Rae, and Andrew Alvarez. There are also a handful of curious drawings, one of a hand-colored treasure map, another pencil drawing labeled "Holiday Inn." The end of the album has small newspaper clippings containing advertising for costumers and nightclubs. An interesting and plentiful collection of the earliest gestation phase of the disco area.

Provenance: Estate of the artist.James Steward - exhibition notes 1996.When Berkeley-based artist Edward Hagedorn died in 1982, few members of the Bay Area art-going public would have known of his work. Although he lived in the Bay Area for eighty years, after much early success the eccentric and idealistic Hagedorn, troubled by personal shyness, ceased to exhibit his work publicly in the late 1930s. Yet he remained obsessed with creating images of primal force. Despite living the last thirty years of his life as a virtual recluse-described by an artist colleague as a "walking question mark with no use for success"-he left behind him a remarkable body of work that is only now coming to be known. This work suggests that it is fair to appraise Hagedorn as the most important Expressionist artist to have come out of California.Born in San Francisco in 1902, Hagedorn enrolled at the San Francisco Art Association by the age of sixteen, and then around 1923 to 1925 at the California School of Fine Arts, where his teachers included artists who had been profoundly influenced by the Armory Show and who had even participated in the Pan-Pacific Exposition.Hagedorn exhibited frequently throughout the late 1920s and '30s with members of the "Society of Six," even winning honors from the Brooklyn Museum and the Pennsylvania Academy, sharing their Fauvist-influenced, Expressionist aesthetic. However he resisted frequent overtures from dealers and curators that might have brought him increased acclaim. Enabled in part by the inheritance of substantial means from his maternal family, Hagedorn abruptly ceased to show his work publicly in the late 1930s. The spirit went out of much of his work from about 1940, and although Hagedorn continued to make art throughout most of his life, it often devolved into trivializing depictions of the female nude.
