        Drawings for the Bible.

Printed in Paris for Harcourt Brace & Co. New York 1960 - First American edition of this double issue of Verve, 37/38, with additional title-page in English. Folio (35.5 x 26 cm), [17] pp, 24 original colour lithographs by Chagall printed by Mourlot, 96 black and white photogravures printed by the brothers Draeger and reproducing the etchings made by Chagall for the Illustrations for the Bible, [16] pp. Text by Gaston Bachelard translated into English by Stuart Gilbert. Publisher's pictorial boards depicting David, Bathsheba and God; moderate edgewear, the spine showing some separation, remains of the original dust wrapper, corners slightly bumped. Chagall's celebrated illustrations for the Bible, with 24 additional colour lithographs specially made for this Verve edition. "Since early youth, I have been captivated by the Bible. It seemed and still seems to me the greatest source of poetry of all time. Since then, I have sought out its reflection in life and in art. The Bible as it were resonates in nature, and it is this secret I try to convey" (Marc Chagall). In this beautiful portfolio, produced in Paris under the direction of the well-known publisher Tériade, Marc Chagall (1887-1985) continued his exploration of the Bible, as a source of inspiration for his drawings. The publication capitalises on Chagall's first cycle titled Illustrations for the Bible, which had been specially commissioned by Ambroise Vollard, the great art dealer and publisher of artist books, and was published by Tériade for Verve in two volumes in 1956. In the present work, Chagall additionally included scenes of the Old Testament's 'great dramas' drawn in 1958-59 , among which one finds the story of the Garden of Eden, Cain and Abel, the flood, the golden calf, Jonah and the whale, David and Goliath etc. Sorlier 75; Cramer 42.         More Twizzle Adventure Stories (The Lovable TV Character)

Birn Brothers Ltd, London 1960 - RARE title. FIRST EDITION. Illustrated in colour throughout. Charming late-1950's illustrations by F. Woof. Apart from the full-colour covers, all illustrations are b&w with one additional colour added (either blue, red, green, or orange). Every page is adorned with either one or two large illustrations, however some pages feature a comic-book-style layout with several illustrations. One double-page spread features a dice game titled "Stray Town Zoo Game". Also includes a single-page dice game titled "Twizzle's Balloon Race". The volume contains a total of 15 short adventure stories (some rhyming), plus a one-page puzzle, & the two dice games. The children's TV show "The Adventures of Twizzle" ran from 1957 to 1959. There were a total of 52 episodes. This book was published in 1960, following the show's run. "The Adventures of Twizzle (or simply Twizzle as it was known in some territories) is the very first television show produced by AP Films and specifically Gerry Anderson (creator of the 'Thunderbirds' series), after being approached by author Roberta Leigh (who also co-produced with Anderson) and her colleague Suzanne Warner. Twizzle - from whom the series gets its name - is a boy doll with the ability to extend (or 'twizzle') his legs and arms. He wears a pixie-like hat and has a cat companion known as 'Footso'. Although a boy, he was voiced by a woman, Nancy Nevinson who also narrated the series. The series follows his adventures as he uses his abilities to get out of trouble. In all, 52 episodes were made in black and white, although only the first, Twizzle and Footso, is believed to survive and was included as an additional feature on the boxed set of the entire series of Space Patrol released in 2003." Wikipedia notes that "there was a British annual brought out in 1960 by Birn Brothers Ltd, called More Twizzle Adventure Stories which is now very rare". No mention on Wikipedia of the earlier title Twizzle's Adventure Stories, which was published in 1958. Printed in Great Britain. Bound in publisher's original bright full-colour pictorial laminated boards, with one-colour pictorial endpapers. No dustjacket issued. Slight handling wear, mild shelfwear to boards, tape-repair to head & foot of spine, binding lightly cracked in middle (but still holding), light marginal foxing (due to cheap paper), otherwise overall a very nice clean tight solid hardcover copy. Internally NEAR FINE in remarkably fresh bright crisp condition. 93pp. VERY RARE & collectible. SB-42. Size: 28 x 21cm [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
