Louis Aragon [1897 - 1982] French poet, novelist & editor. Having been involved in Dadaism from 1919 to 1924, he became a founding member of Surrealism in 1924, with André Breton & Philippe Soupault under the pen-name "Aragon".         Lady Chatterley's Lover

Penguin, 1960, unpublished proof copy.. I am often asked what he rarest Penguin of all might be. This is a contender. In early 1960 Penguin editors decided to publish a batch of ten D.H. Lawrence titles to commemorate the 30th anniversary of his death. They had done something similar in 1950, and now wanted to be the publishers of all Lawrence's major works. This naturally included Lady Chatterley's Lover; now a practical consideration, with new legislation that as thought to make it easier to publish literary novels with 'difficult' subject matter. As was normal, the printers produced around a dozen proof copies, of which this is one. At this point however, the printers, Hazell Watson & Viney, decided that they could not subject their staff to the material contained in the book and withdrew. This meant that the planed August publication date was lost. Penguin made an announcement n the trade press that publication was delayed. Meanwhile, one of the file copies had found its way into the hands of a policeman, and then the Director of Public Prosecutions. It seemed the time for the DPP to test the new Obscene Publications Act. Penguin found a new printer eventually; Sir Isaac Pitman offered his own company, Western Printing Services, on a matter of principle, and the complete run of 200,000 copies of the first Penguin edition were printed and stored in a warehouse. The prosecution would proceed on the 'publication' of the book. Normally this simply meant that a book was published and the police would raid a convenient shop in Charing Cross Road. Penguin's founder Allen Lane did not want an innocent bookseller prosecuted as well and suggested that publication could be contrived by the simple expedient of two directors presenting two dozen copies to a policeman a Scotland Yard. This was agreed, and the handover took place. These copies, and the copies used by the judge and jury were all he normal Penguin edition, taken from the warehouse. The judge's own copy was auctioned at Sotheby's some years ago; it was sold with two sheets of typed paper giving the page references to all sex acts and obscenities used in the book, and these were underlined in the text. It also included a small silk purse, so the judge could carry his copy around discreetly. The prosecution took place, and Penguin won the case, and the warehoused copies were sold. An immediate reprint was planned that involved at least five separate printers, including Hazell Watson & Viney, and some two million copies were produced and sold within a few months. The first Penguin edition is easily found, as are the first reprints. The proof copy, which effectively launched the prosecution, is clearly a very rare thing. Around half a dozen copies are known to exist, from the dozen or so that would have been issued. These were normally used by editors and Penguin staff. So - it is rare, but also has played a part in British publishing and cultural history; a significant rarity, then. This copy is in good condition. The covers are simply paper, that is uncoated and has a few marks. 'Lawrence Lady C' is written on the spine in indelible ink. I would suspect that this is contemporary to the book, for he simple reason that the text is written up the spine; a convention Penguin adhered to until around 1960 - now all spines on almost all books read 'down'.

[Avati, James] [Forester, C. S.] UNIQUE ORIGINAL ARTWORK BY JAMES AVATI FOR THE 1960 BANTAM PAPERBACK, THE AFRICAN QUEEN, BY C. S. FORESTER. One of the few extant Avati paintings illustrating major works by major 20th century authors still available to commerce. 14 x 12 inches, executed in oil on board-mounted canvas, colors still bright and vivid, in strikingly fresh condition. Museum quality framed-and-matted to a dimension of 16 x 14 inches. Avati's original painting for the first paperback version of Salinger's CATCHER IN THE RYE (1953) recently sold for $21,510.00 at auction (October, 2010). His original painting for the first paperback version (1952) of Christopher Isherwood's GOODBYE TO BERLIN (auctioned July 2009) fetched $26,290.00. James Avati (1912-2005) was often called "The Rembrandt" of 1940s and 1950s paperback illustration. He popularized authors such as William Faulkner for the average reader with alluring cover art which sported extraordinary emotional impact. His brilliance in capturing human feeling: tension or pain, suggestiveness or lust, avarice or suspicion, compassion or devotion was unrivaled during the golden age of paperback illustration. He created a visual narrative that brought characters' tragedies and yearnings to life with a tough-minded gritty realism without any compromising sentimentality. In the primary reference book "The Paperback Art Of James Avati" (Piet Schreuders & Kenneth Fulton, 2005), this painting is illustrated on p. 160. The distinction of this painting may be obvious to those familiar with Avati's work: the lush jungle green landscape which surrounds the central figures is an unusually dynamic departure for Avati and his decision to interpret the novel's most iconic image, Charlie and Rose pulling the celebrated "African Queen" through the twisted, overwhelming jungle vines of the Ulanga River in German East Africa in an attempt to outfox the World War One German Imperial Forces, has produced something very special. John Huston's film version starring Humphrey Bogart (in his only Oscar-winning role) and Katharine Hepburn is one of the American Film Institute's 100 best films ever made. The novel itself is today, along with the Horatio Hornblower series, the best known and best loved of C. S. Forester's (1899-1966) lifetime achievement of more than fifty works of fiction. James Avati produced this painting for Bantam Books #A2111 in August of 1960. . Illus. by James Avati.

Krönika (Chronique). Översättning av Herr Hammarskjöld / Originalet publicerat i Cahiers du Sud 46 (1959), s. 329-343.

Stencil i A4-format, [1] + 11 s. Klammerhft. Med påskrift av Sten G. Lindberg i bläck på första sidan: "Sten G. Lindberg genom [Uno] Willers förmedling delaktig av en distribution inom Sv. Akademien 20.8.1960." I stencilens rubrik daterad 'New York, den 8 augusti 1960.

        The Constitution of Liberty.

(Chicago), The University Press of Chicago, (1960). 8vo. In the original full cloth with gilt lettering to spine, with the original dust jacket. A very fine and clean copy, near mint. X, 569, (1) pp.. First edition of Hayek's exceedingly influential work on the fundamental principles of liberty, which is widely regarded as being not only Hayek's greatest achievement, but also the most famous 20th century work on economic liberalism and liberty in general. It immediately became an academic bestseller, but the breakthrough to the wider public came when the leader of the British Conservative Party, Margaret Thatcher, interrupted a presentation by banging on the table with the book to indicate that "This is what we believe!".Hayek's main concern was "with that condition of men in which coercion of some by others is reduced as much as is possible in society" (From the introcution to the present work), and he here presents freedom and liberty as prerequisites for wealth and growth, rather than the other way around. "The Constitution of Liberty" was placed 9th on the list of the 100 best non-fiction books of the twentieth century compiled by the biweekly conservative magazine National Review.Hayek, economist and philosopher, was best known for his defense of classical liberalism and free-market capitalism against socialist and collectivist thought. He is considered to be one of the most important economists and political philosophers of the twentieth century, winning the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 1974. Along with his mentor Ludwig von Mises, he was the most important contributor to the Austrian school of political economy

Collection of 400 Photographs from a Camden, New Jersey Family

Camden, New Jersey. 1860-1960s. A collection of more than 400 photos from a Camden, New Jersey family including 40 Civil War-era tintypes, 30 cabinet cards, and the rest various different format photographs taken between 1900 and the early 1960s, various sizes and with a few back marks from Virginia, but most from the Philadelphia, Camden, and Trenton areas. The photos are generally very good or better with some photos clipped at the corners from mounting, wear to some of the edges, and a few of the tintypes darkening or with their finish peeling. The photos feature matron Mary A. Fleming and the extended families of her daughters Elizabeth Nardin, Bessie W. Steelman, and Emma Gordon, including their husbands, children, and relations in various formal and candid shots: posing with pets, laughing with friends, kids playing, a flood, a house being built (likely due to the flood), and others. Of note are about a dozen military-related photographs featuring: six Civil War soldiers each posing in uniform; four of World War I soldiers in formation and training; a group shot of World War II sailors posing on the deck of a ship; and four of USO entertainers performing at an army hospital. The photos are accompanied by a few handwritten notes referencing various family members, as well as what was once a red velvet photo album, now only a tattered remnant of its former self, with a handful of additional scattered photos still intact. A nice collection of photos documenting 100 years of a New Jersey family's history. .

The Young Savages [A Matter of Conviction] (Original screenplay, signed by John Frankenheimer)

ABC / Contemporary Productions / Harold Hecht Productions, 1960. Draft Script for the 1961 film, "The Young Savages" (here under its working title, "A Matter of Conviction"), SIGNED by director John Frankeheimer on the front wrapper. Directed by Frankenheimer, based on the 1959 novel, "A Matter of Conviction," by Evan Hunter (who also wrote as Ed McBain), written for the screen by Edward Anhalt and J.P. Miller, and starring Burt Lancaster, Dina Merrill, Shelley Winters, Telly Savalas. One of the first "thinking man's pictures" of the 1960s, addressing the topic of juvenile delinquency head-on, with Lancaster as a lawyer initially bent on prosecuting a group of young thugs, then coming around to them as he studies the details of the case. The first of four films that Lancaster would make with director Frankenheimer. Light blue studio wrappers, with only the title on the front wrapper, and a holograph ink notation at the top edge of same reading, "Lanchester" [sic], which is possibly contemporary to the script's use, and possibly later. Title page present, with a date of April 9, 1960 and a credit for Harold Hecht Productions (also known as Hecht-Hill-Lancaster Productions). 131 leaves, mimeograph, rectos only. Pages Near Fine, wrapper Very Good plus with light fading and a couple of short closed tears at the edges, bound with two gold brads.
