        MR. CITIZEN

Bernard Geis (1960), (New York) - Illustrated with photographs. Truman's account of his experiences after leaving the White House. The scarcest of the three issues of this book, this is the Author's Edition bound in half brown morocco leather and patterned paper boards with two gilt-lettered black labels on the spine and a larger label on the front cover noting this as the "Author's Edition." It is believed that only 100 copies were issued in this manner for use by Truman to give to families and friends, as opposed to the limitation of 1000 of the regular limited edition. This copy is INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author to his former Secretary of the Treasury on the half-title page: "To Honorable John Wesley Snyder,/from/his good friend, comrade/and associate in most/trying times. He was the/greatest of the great Secretaries/of the Treasury./Sincerely/Harry Truman/Independence/November 11, 1960." Snyder has highlighted a few passages with pencil. Housed in the original pictorial slipcase which is also INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author: "Honorable John W. Snyder/from/Harry Truman." This inscription and signature are rubbed and faded but still visible. Some rubbing to one of the spine labels. Near Fine in a Near Fine slipcase [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The Truth About A Publisher. An Autobiographical Record.

London: George Allen & Unwin Ltd, 1960 - Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to spine gilt, blue topstain. Some light rubbing to extremities, but an excellent copy. Black and white portrait frontispiece and numerous photographic plates. First edition, first impression. With the author's signed presentation inscription to Storer Lunt, head of the New York publishing house W. W. Norton & Co., on the front free endpaper, "To Storer Lunt, Colleague of my best friend among american publishers, the late W. W. Norton, from Stanley Unwin, 31st March 1960". Includes, clipped from the New York Times, the glowing review that Lunt wrote of the book, and three typed letters signed, two from Stanley Unwin thanking him for the review, and one from "Jack" at A & C Black reporting Unwin's delight at reading Lunt's review - "I have never known the old boy so delighted and above himself (which is saying something)." A nice document of relations in the upper echelons of the publishing world. [Attributes: First Edition]

All the King's Men. A play

New York: Random House,, 1960. Octavo. Original red cloth, titles to spine gilt on a black ground, and imprint gilt to front board, black topstain. With the dust jacket. Spine slightly dulled, and very slight rubbing to tips, a few mild spot to edges and endpapers. An excellent copy in the soiled and spine-tanned jacket with a few stains. First edition thus (originally published as the author's first novel in 1946 by Harcourt, Brace & Co); the play was first performed at the East 74th Street Theatre, NYC, on October 16 1959. This copy is inscribed on the front free endpaper to Conrad Aiken and his wife Mary, "To Conrad + Mary, with friendship and admiration, Red, Fairfield, May 3, 1960". Warren admired Aiken's writing, and included an Aiken story as editor of the 1954 Dell book "Short Story Masterpieces", as well as later writing the introduction to the 1982 Schocken edition of Aiken's "Collected Short Stories".

My Wonderful World of Slapstick [*SIGNED*]

Doubleday & Company Inc. Garden City NY: Doubleday & Company, Inc.. Very Good in Very Good dj. 1960. First Edition. Hardcover. NOISBN . [spine slightly turned, front hinge unobtrusively reinforced by a professional paper conservator, otherwise just a bit shelfworn at the bottom extremities; jacket slightly toned at spine, small chip at top of spine, rear hinge split but professionally repaired, overall a clean and attractive example of this easily-worn jacket]. (B&W photographs) INSCRIBED and SIGNED by Buster Keaton on the verso of the half-title page (facing the title page). The inscription reads: "To Fritzie / My Queen, / From me, The King, / Buster." (The inscribee was actress Fritzi Burr, and the inscription is a reference to their joint appearance in the U.S. touring company of "Once Upon a Mattress" in 1960.) Billed as the "intimate autobiography" of the great comedian/filmmaker, it's one of those memoirs that manages to be both enchanting and infuriating, written as it was back in the day when many Hollywood autobiographies were unencumbered by such niceties as fact-checking. Still, as the personal testimony of one of the cinema's great artists, it more than deserves its inclusion in the noted bibliography "100 Books on Hollywood & the Movies." And to say that Buster Keaton inscriptions are uncommon is an understatement; although he was not illiterate -- a ridiculous notion floated by one of his less astute biographers -- he certainly was undereducated (he was being knocked about onstage by his father from the age of three, fer chrissake), and written documents of any sort in his hand are about as common as his on-screen smile. His art was brilliantly intuitive, and will endure for precisely that reason -- but a man of letters he was not. [Note that a cracked front hinge on this book has been unobtrusively repaired and reinforced by a professional paper conservator, and a similar repair performed on the rear hinge of the jacket.] Signed by Author .

        Twelve Papers by John Mason

London: Maggs Brothers, (1960). Folio. 12ff. A note on the front-cover label states that after John Mason published his work Papermaking as an Artistic Craft, he received many requests for specimens of his handmade papers. This book is the result of those requests. A collection of twelve examples of papers by Mason, mounted on heavier gray paper. Many of the papers were made from found objects, such as plants encountered alongside the River Soar, and one of Mason's own shirts that he tore. Others incorporate full plants and leaves, dyed contrasting colors, into paper. A label pasted inside the front cover describes each sample. Mason was the proprietor of the Twelve by Eight Paper Mill and Press, in Leicester, England, and each sample bears the mark of the Press. A couple of the samples are letterpress printed: one is a specimen page from a book on papermaking, and the other is a broadside for an address given by John Mason in 1957. A few of the samples show some light spots of adhesive offsetting to the corners where they were mounted to the backing paper. Also, two of the samples have descriptions pasted to the backing page, which do not match the samples, and three others have traces of adhesive in the same place. It is unclear if these were original to the portfolio. Housed in a portfolio with a printed label to the front cover.

        RITUAL IN THE DARK. Signed

London: Victor Gollancz, 1960 The Victor Gollancz Copy Inscribed By John Braine. 8vo., 416pp. Original cloth, black lettering. Dustwrapper. First edition. Very top of spine slightly faded. Fore-edges slightly browned. Wrapper lightly browned, creased, chipped at head & heel & with short tears. A very good plus copy in a very good dustwrapper. Inscribed on the fixed front endpaper, both sides of the free endpaper & on the half title by the author John Braine to Victor Gollancz: 'Miss Hewitt - Dear V. G., After this, please don't send me any more books for at least a year; I'm not working for you. Ritual in the Dark has, despite all the advice I gave to Colin, at least 1000 ineptitudes; and, despite all these ineptitudes, is still supremely readable. It renews my youth , and makes me remember the London I once knew - the La Vie Boheme London, the (illegible word) alive London of both 1945 and 1951. It's a very bad novel; but I could read it. And if you don't think this high praise then you know nothing at all abou t me - which indeed you don't, - sentimental old bourgeois that you are - or about any kind of mature writing! John Braine.' An important presentation inscription, John Braine being one of the people Colin Wilson acknowledges along with Victor Gollancz himself on the dedication leaf.. Signed by Author. 1st Edition.

[Rabbit Angstrom Novels]: Rabbit, Run; Rabbit Redux; Rabbit is Rich; Rabbit at Rest

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1960-1990 First editions, first printings. Four volumes: "Rabbit, Run" (1960), "Rabbit Redux" (1971), "Rabbit is Rich" (1981), and "Rabbit at Rest" (1990). A near fine set, each copy has bright and clean pages. "Rabbit, Run" has some minor wear to the spine head and tail, with minor offsetting along the edges of the front panel, slight residue along the bottom edge of the back panel; "Rabbit Redux" with slight offsetting isde the front panel and on the front endpaper, with a hint of offsetting inside the back cover; "Rabbit is Rich" with slight offsetting inside the front and back covers; "Rabbit at Rest" with some wear to the spine head and only a hint of wear to the spine tail. Each copy is in the original unclipped and unfaded dust jacket. "Rabbit, Run" has some wear to the spine head and tail, slight rubbing to the front panel; "Rabbit Redux" has a slight crease to the front panel, some small residue on the front flap; "Rabbit is Rich" with a hint of offsetting to the front and back flaps; "Rabbit at Rest" with little to no wear. Overall, an extremely attractive set. These four volumes comprise the Rabbit series, which was published as one volume in 1995 under the title "Rabbit Angstrom: A Tetralogy." Updike wrote the series incrementally at the end of each decade in the second half of the 20th century and each work reflects the zeitgeist of that particular time period. Additionally, the series traces the life of the main character Harry "Rabbit" Angstrom, whom the reader follows from his early adulthood to retirement. Together, the Rabbit series was noted by the New York Times as one of the best works of fiction in the last few decades. Because each volume represents a different time period in Angstrom's life, American society, and Updike's career as a writer, the fact that each volume in this group is a first edition published in a different decade, adds to the overall quality of this set.. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included.
