London: Victor Gollancz, 1960 The Victor Gollancz Copy Inscribed By John Braine. 8vo., 416pp. Original cloth, black lettering. Dustwrapper. First edition. Very top of spine slightly faded. Fore-edges slightly browned. Wrapper lightly browned, creased, chipped at head & heel & with short tears. A very good plus copy in a very good dustwrapper. G., After this, please don't send me any more books for at least a year; I'm not working for you. Ritual in the Dark has, despite all the advice I gave to Colin, at least 1000 ineptitudes; and, despite all these ineptitudes, is still supremely readable. It renews my youth , and makes me remember the London I once knew - the La Vie Boheme London, the (illegible word) alive London of both 1945 and 1951. It's a very bad novel; but I could read it. And if you don't think this high praise then you know nothing at all abou t me - which indeed you don't, - sentimental old bourgeois that you are - or about any kind of mature writing! John Braine.' An important presentation inscription, John Braine being one of the people Colin Wilson acknowledges along with Victor Gollancz himself on the dedication leaf.. Signed by Author. 1st Edition.

[Rabbit Angstrom Novels]: Rabbit, Run; Rabbit Redux; Rabbit is Rich; Rabbit at Rest

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1960-1990 First editions, first printings. Four volumes: "Rabbit, Run" (1960), "Rabbit Redux" (1971), "Rabbit is Rich" (1981), and "Rabbit at Rest" (1990). A near fine set, each copy has bright and clean pages. "Rabbit, Run" has some minor wear to the spine head and tail, with minor offsetting along the edges of the front panel, slight residue along the bottom edge of the back panel; "Rabbit Redux" with slight offsetting isde the front panel and on the front endpaper, with a hint of offsetting inside the back cover; "Rabbit is Rich" with slight offsetting inside the front and back covers; "Rabbit at Rest" with some wear to the spine head and only a hint of wear to the spine tail. Each copy is in the original unclipped and unfaded dust jacket. "Rabbit, Run" has some wear to the spine head and tail, slight rubbing to the front panel; "Rabbit Redux" has a slight crease to the front panel, some small residue on the front flap; "Rabbit is Rich" with a hint of offsetting to the front and back flaps; "Rabbit at Rest" with little to no wear. Overall, an extremely attractive set. These four volumes comprise the Rabbit series, which was published as one volume in 1995 under the title "Rabbit Angstrom: A Tetralogy." Updike wrote the series incrementally at the end of each decade in the second half of the 20th century and each work reflects the zeitgeist of that particular time period. Additionally, the series traces the life of the main character Harry "Rabbit" Angstrom, whom the reader follows from his early adulthood to retirement. Together, the Rabbit series was noted by the New York Times as one of the best works of fiction in the last few decades. Because each volume represents a different time period in Angstrom's life, American society, and Updike's career as a writer, the fact that each volume in this group is a first edition published in a different decade, adds to the overall quality of this set.. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

Boston: Atlantic Monthly Press [Little, Brown and Company], 1960. First American edition. Hardcover. Very Good/near fine. PRESENTLY DISCOUNTED. WAS $2,565. A Very Good or better copy of the First American Edition, first printing (light handling soil to boards, upper board corners bumped, small sunned area to the spine head), in a Near Fine dust jacket (spine lightly sunned, modest edge wear, tiny chipping at spine ends and corners, small rub at lower portion of the front panel near the flap turn, short closed tear at the top of the front flap turn and where the front panel joins the spine tail, expected age toning to the rear panel and to the flap edges --- in excellent condition for an unlaminated dust jacket of this age), SIGNED BY GEORGE SEFERIS [IN GREEK] on the title page. Containing 127 pages, the book presents the first comprehensive collection of Seferis' Poetry published in the United States. While some of the verses selected for this book previously appeared in the 1948 translation of "The King of Asine", the balance of them appear here in English for the first time. A Greek Diplomat and Ambassador to the UK, and one of the Twentieth Century's most important Greek Poets, George Seferis won the 1963 Nobel Prize in Literature for "his eminent lyrical writing, inspired by a deep feeling for the Hellenic world of culture", making him the first Greek ever to have received the Prize. In addition to their deep relationship as friends, each man held the other in high regard, and Warner's excellent translations of his work were a major factor in Seferis' winning the Prize. Signed copies of Seferis' works are extraordinarily scarce in any language, and our search of the of the auction records shows no signed copies of his works coming to auction in the last 55 years. Altogether a Very Good copy of an extremely difficult-to-find book from the first Greek author to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. RARE.

In this letter, Kennedy provides insight into her expectations and her hopes for her life as First Lady. She is remarkably candid about her expectation that the press will publish inaccurate information, her desire to preserve some privacy for her children, and her concern that her family's new position not disrupt the lives of their friends. She writes: "It is so nice to read things written by someone with such great common sense. I am thinking of your column tonight about my fox hunting in Virginia. You are most correct - my greatest wish is not to disrupt that peaceful community, and spoil it for my many friends who live there, and for my own children. That is why I chose it - because it is such a private place." Her son, John Jr., was born just days earlier on Nov. 25th, and Kennedy notes that she will not be well enough to ride or hunt before the season ends in March. She explains her purpose in renting a house in Virginia is not to hunt but rather "just to be in the country with my children & occasionally go riding." She also clarifies she has only one horse which she shares with a friend, not "a stable full of thoroughbred hunters." In closing, she adds, "This letter is just for you so please don't quote any of it - though of course the facts you may use if you ever wish, in your words."

n.d. [1960]. Framed Letter. Fine and attractively framed. Brief letter on two sides of a generic Christmas card. In full: "I appreciated those kind words in the Commonweal - an excellent selection of adjectives, said I to myself. Did you see the editorial in America about Rabbit Run? Nausesous [sic]. I hope your various projects are going well and I wish you a Merry Christmas. Flannery OC." Although the recipient is not named and the date not given, the reference to the review of Updike's book dates this to 1960. The card (4-3/4" x 5-1/2") is matted with a photograph of O'Connor (4-1/4" x 6-1/4") and framed to an overall size of 14-1/4" x 19-3/4" with a cutout on the reverse side to show both sides of the card. A unique piece capturing the gentle and humorous spirit of this great author of WISE BLOOD, A GOOD MAN IS HARD TO FIND, and THE VIOLENT BEAR IT AWAY - a writer who had a deep impact on the literature of the South, despite a debilitating handicap and a tragically short life.

Louis Aragon [1897 - 1982] French poet, novelist & editor. Having been involved in Dadaism from 1919 to 1924, he became a founding member of Surrealism in 1924, with André Breton & Philippe Soupault under the pen-name "Aragon". He had met her in 1928, and she became his muse starting in the 1940s. Aragon and Triolet collaborated in the left-wing French media before and during World War II, going underground for most of the Nazi occupation.
